Abstract:
Sufism is a living mystical tradition with tools and a theoretical framework geared to facilitate the realization of one’s full potential. This thesis examines the nature of such a realization, which culminates in an experience of nondual Self-realization. Transpersonal psychology provided the conceptual framework for this study, as it attempts to document the role that altered states of consciousness play in facilitating health and wellbeing. This research also drew heavily from the methodology of phenomenological hermeneutics and transpersonal phenomenology, which supported the investigation into the lived experience of five Sufi practitioners. The guiding research question of this exploratory inquiry asks, What has been the lived experience of Sufi practitioners on their journey towards nondual Self-realization? The research findings consist of eight themes that emerged during the analysis of the textual data. The implications of these findings impact the health and counseling fields, as well as the environmental crisis.

Evans, Mark Andrew. "The concept of self-realization in political theory." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1993. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:ae8f4fad-e6c2-47af-bf80-a44bf66e78f6.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to elaborate a plausible conception of self-realization and defend the claims that: {a} the concept in general is a valid concern of modern political theory; {b} the conception it proposes provides an ideal which can play a workable and desirable role in shaping the structure of modern political institutions and the content of specific policies. I begin by examining the conceptual definition of "modern" thought, proposing to explore how "self-realization" may be conceived in a way which respects the terms of this definition. I justify the separate existence of my proposed theory by showing that its conception of self-realization is clearly distinct from, but compatible with, autonomy and that its consequences for political practice are also interestingly different from policies promoting autonomy alone. The relevance of this is justified by a general defence of perfectionism in politics. I develop the theory by examination of conceptions of self-realization in the political thought of Aristotle, John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx. The structure, underlying assumptions and political import of each is considered in order to understand how selfrealizationist theories work and to see what, if anything, from these thinkers remains pertinent. My ("general") theory of self-realization is built from a critique of the Marxist concept of communism. The final chapter consolidates these foundations, constructing the "general conception" with some of the critically-tested ideas from earlier chapters. A new way of conceptualizing the self for the purposes of political theory is offered, justifying this melding of ideas from disparate traditions into one conception. Possible policy consequences of the latter are summarized, drawing heavily on the conclusions of the author-based chapters. The study concludes by presenting an argument which might be offered for the claim that this new conception of self-realization is worth promoting through political action.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This is a study of Nietzsche's thought which focuses upon his account of self-hood, his ambition to bring about a 'revaluation of all values', and the structure and strategies of his texts. The introductory chapter raises a series of questions about the relationship between representations of the self, self-transformation and the problem of truth in Nietzsche's writings. I discuss the force and implications of Nietzschean 'truthfulness'. Chapter One is an exploration of Nietzsche's account of modern subjectivity. The point I seek to establish here is that there are important continuities between asceticism and Nietzsche's own thought about the self. I also discuss Nietzsche's 'perspectivism', treating it as arising out of modem self-consciousness about the contingency of our identities, and argue that Nietzsche translates that sense of contingency into a sceptical treatment of the conditions of self-knowledge. Chapter Two examines Nietzsche's sceptical treatment of the conditions under which we claim 'knowledge' in the light of his reception of Schopenhauer's and Kant's philosophies. I discuss a reading of Nietzsche's perspectivism which suggests that it expresses an epistemic caution which nonetheless permits us to suppose that we can legitimately speak of our access to 'truths' about the empirical world. I argue that this is too narrow a view of the role played in Nietzsche's thought by the appeal to 'truth' and that we need to take account of the wider rhetorical and aesthetic context within which such appeals are made. The significance of this discussion lies in the question of how we are to characterize Nietzsche sense of our relationship to 'reality', and hence the character of his 'realism'. Chapter Three explores the poetic aspects of Nietzsche's characterization of a life which would embody the principles of a tragic vision. The relationship between art and truth in Nietzsche's thought is discussed. The concluding remarks consider the status of a text which aims to transfigure our understanding of ourselves at a fundamental level.

Abstract:

This dissertation utilizes Merleau-Ponty’s theory of the Flesh and Jung’s theory of self-realization as a way to integrate the gained understanding into the current approach of psychotherapy as an altered attitude for the treatment of the psyche. The theories of Flesh and self-realization are used to approach a fundamental drive that leads to pathologies and wider consciousness (Merleau-Ponty, 2012; Jung, 1928/1977). This allows for the treatment of the psyche in consideration of this natural drive that enables the client’s transformation toward wholeness through the individuation process (Jung, 1959/1969, 1928/1977, 1951/1978). The Flesh is described by Merleau-Ponty as an elemental general manner of “being” (Merleau-Ponty, 1968), while self-realization is described by Jung as wholeness. This philosophic hermeneutic research recognizes the importance of gaining greater understanding of the phenomenon of self-realization. Merleau-Ponty and Jung understood the significance that opposites and their relationship with one another play in this developmental process, that is, reversibility and tension of opposites (Merleau-Ponty, 2012; Jung, 1928/1977). Jung’s depth psychological and Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological understanding of the symbol’s capacity synthesize the opposites, thereby widening consciousness ultimately to self-realization are presented.

Full text
Abstract:
100 years ago, there was a group of women called Zishunu who stood up against the whole society and swore off marriage for life. Zishu offered an escape for many women in the Pearl River Delta area. As forerunners in female independence and liberation, Zishunu never had the chance to be the spokesman of themselves or the recognition they deserved. Ji Sor (1997), a groundbreaking work in lesbian-themed movies, beautifully depicts this special and unparalleled historical phenomenon in detail. Released a few months after the Handover of Hong Kong in 1997, this critically acclaimed movie by Hong Kong New Wave filmmaker Jacob Cheung embodies the three biggest fears of an extremely conservative society: absence of marriage, challenges to male hegemony, and homosexuality. Although seen as representatives of strong and independent women, Zishunu had to make a lot of compromises to the patriarchal culture to be allowed not to marry. The emancipation of Zishunu, although as a huge advancement in the feminism in China, is not a complete liberation. Women emancipation cannot be achieved by women celibacy. A hundred years later, we are still asking what gender equality really means, what is women’s power, what is independence, what is feminism? Through the analyses of Zishu and Ji Sor both individually and together, this thesis explores the meanings of gender equalities and sexual identities mean in the cinematic world and in the real world. There shouldn’t be a set of standards of how women should act. The right that a woman should have, just like a real women’s movie, is the autonomy to make her own decisions.

Abstract:
Following the general view of faith provided by Paul Tillich as 'the state of being ultimately concerned,' the present work provides a topography of faith that is designed to reveal the intimate connections between faith and the development of personal identity. As the state of Being-for-one's-ultimate-concern, it is a person's faith which molds and shapes her own unique self, providing depth, direction, and unity to her life.
My understanding of faith is that it must be living faith, like living tissue, and this is true in the obvious sense that it is a life lived. Starting from the view that no individual's existence is self-justifying, what is presented is an existential analysis of our actual encounters with faith, brought to show up through the individual's active struggle in responding to the call of her own question-begging existence. This is the process of the making of the identity I have called transcendental faith.

Abstract:
In the blooming era of the Internet of Things (IoT), trust has become a vital factor for provisioning reliable smart services without human intervention by reducing risk in autonomous decision making. However, the merging of physical objects, cyber components and humans in the IoT infrastructure has introduced new concerns for the evaluation of trust. Consequently, a large number of trust-related challenges have been unsolved yet due to the ambiguity of the concept of trust and the variety of divergent trust indicators, models and management mechanisms in different IoT scenarios. In this PhD thesis, my ultimate goal is to propose an efficient and practical trust evaluation for any IoT ecosystems. To achieve this goal, the first important objective is to augment the generic trust concept and conceptual model of trust in order to come up with a comprehensive understanding of trust, influencing factor and relevant Trust Indicators (TI) in the context of IoT. Following the catalyst, as the second objective, a trust model called REK comprised of the triad Reputation, Experience and Knowledge TIs is proposed which covers multi-dimensional aspects of trust by incorporating heterogeneous information from direct observation, personal experiences to global opinions. Knowledge TI is as “direct trust” rendering a trustor’s understanding of a trustee in respective scenarios that can be obtained based on limited available information about characteristics of the trustee, environment and the trustor’s perspective using a variety of techniques. Experience and Reputation TIs are originated from social features and extracted based on previous interactions among entities in IoT. The mathematical models and calculation mechanisms for the Experience and Reputation TIs also proposed leveraging sociological behaviours of humans in the real-world; and being inspired by the Google PageRank in the web-ranking area, respectively. Things are expected to live in different “domains” and “contexts” during their lifetime. Information generated/associated with Things should be manageable by multiple, diverse stakeholders with different roles, information and functionalities with many access levels, ecosystems with different trust level and security primitives. In that sense, as third objective of this thesis, a novel blockchain-enhanced IoT data-sharing framework named Semantic Smart Contract (SSC) is proposed taking full advantage of the provisions offered by the blockchain and semantics. The feasibility and effectiveness of the REK model, based on the proposed trust indicator, and associated Trust sharing mechanisms are proved not only by the theoretical analysis but also by real-world applications deployed in our Wise-IoT and SMESEC EU projects

Ghazal, Omar M. S. "Low reflectivity facet realization in GaAs-based optoelectronic devices using self-aligned stripe process." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13316/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the realization of low facet reflectivity using self-aligned stripe buried waveguide configuration and its implementation in optoelectronic devices such as superluminescent diodes (SLDs) and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). I explored the development of the buried waveguide in AlGaAs/GaAs material system ,since its first presentation in 1974 by Tsukada, in order to identify the problems associated with this technology. A novel window-faceted structure is demonstrated. The experimental measurements demonstrated effective reflectivity <10-14 as a result of both divergence and absorption within these window-like regions (i.e. not transparent). Its implementation to suppress lasing in tilted and normal-to-facet waveguide SLDs was thoroughly investigated in chapters 3 and 4. In the tilted devices, ~40mW output power with spectral modulation depth < 2% is demonstrated. In the latter types of SLDs, up to 16mW output power with <5% spectral modulation depth was recorded, which is the highest power demonstrated for such configurations. The performance of the two types of devices was measured without the application of anti-reflective coatings on the rear facet, which makes them inherently broadband. By incorporating a windowed facet at each end of a waveguide I could realize an SOA with window structured facet. Promising results were demonstrated in this configuration including 33dB gain and <6dB noise figure, which are comparable to the state-of-the-art. A trial was held to extend the concept of absorptive rear window to visible wavelengths available in the GaInP/AlGaInP material system. Problems associated with such devices were explored briefly and two solutions are suggested. Simulations were performed to realize design of an optimized device. Unfortunately, the experimental implementation of the design was not successful but suggestions for strategies to overcome these problems are discussed.

Abstract:
This study investigated whether an employees’ perception of the ethical culture in the organisation and their perception of their own ethicality influenced their level of organisational identification and additionally, whether this relationship between perceived ethical culture and organisational identification had an influence on workplace wellbeing. The aim of this research study was to measure employees’ perceptions of organisational ethics, their relative self-ethicality, organisational identification, and wellbeing, in order to develop a model pertaining to the relationship between these three constructs. Research showed that employees’ perceptions of the ethical culture in their organisation can influence how they identify with that particular organisation. Research also indicated that the differences between perceived organisational ethicality and relative self-ethicality exist. Additionally, research showed the influence of perceived ethical culture and relative self-ethicality has indicated a relationship between organisational identification and wellbeing respectively. However, to date and to the researcher’s knowledge there has been no investigation of the relationship between these four constructs. This research study was quantitative in nature in which a questionnaire was utilised as a research method. A sample of 111 respondent from three organisations in the automation industry in the Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth was utilised for this research study. The main findings indicated that an alternative model resulted to be a good fit through structural equation modelling. The results illustrated that organisational ethicality has an influence on how employees identify with their organisations and how this relationship influences wellbeing. Therefore, it is worthwhile to invest in an ethical organisational culture for the sustainability of the organisation and its employees’ livelihoods. This study contributes to the literature based on perceived ethical culture, organisational identification, and workplace wellbeing. Additionally, the study provides readers with a model on how these concepts influence each other.

Full text
Abstract:
The term ‘snap’ can be defined as breaking under tension as well as a sudden sharp noise. Both definitions lend themselves to the content of this short story collection and its theme of self-realization (the awakening from an illusionary self-identity or ego). Snap is a progression of stories that revolves around waking up. Novels such as Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, Margaret Atwood’s Surfacing, and Paul Auster’s The New York Trilogy have all examined the issue of finding identity through a breaking of the protagonist. In each case, the protagonists come to a point where they completely separate themselves from their identity, and thus are able to see themselves from a new perspective. Snap further explores the issue of finding identity. However, unlike many postmodern predecessors it tries to give answers. The collection reveals that while we are individuals engaged in an internal struggle we are also connected to one another.

Sears, Emma Jo Benson. "Self-Directed Learning Projects of Older Adults." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1989. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331838/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study determined the number of self-directed learning projects undertaken by older adults and examined the motivational factors and anticipated benefits related to the learning activities. In addition, obstacles to conducting self-directed learning were identified by the respondents. A list of 20,032 names of adults, aged 50 or more years and residing in Tom Green County, Texas, was obtained from voter registration rolls and the residential rolls of four retirement complexes. Four hundred names were randomly selected to serve as the sample of the study. Of the 400 potential subjects, 120 persons agreed to be interviewed. Indepth interviews were conducted using the questions from Tough's Interview Schedule for Studying Some Basic Characteristics of Learning Projects and a probe sheet to identify obstacles to conducting self-directed learning projects. The interviews focused on the learning activities of older adults during the previous year. The 120 subjects of this study conducted a total of 239 learning projects in the previous year, an average of 1.99 self-directed learning projects per person. Ninety-five (95%) percent of the persons interviewed reported to have conducted at least one learning project in the past year. The majority of the learning projects were self-planned for the purpose of self-enjoyment and self-fulfillment. The most frequent obstacles to conducting self-directed learning projects identified by the subjects included: 1) finding the time for the learning activity; 2) the cost of the learning activity; 3) home responsibilities; 4) difficulty deciding what knowledge or skill to learn; 5) difficulty remembering new material or information; and 6) poor health. Comparisons of the results of this study were made with the results of previous studies by Tough, Hiemstra, and Ralston. The data support the belief that books, pamphlets, and newspapers are the primary source of information for the older adult. The results of this study indicate that older adults value self-directed learning as a major source of self~fulfillment in their lives and are motivated to develop new knowledge and skills through self-planned, self-directed learning projects.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine whether and how labor consultants, job coaches, guidance counselors promote the possibility of self-realization of the clients they encounter in their work. By analyzing, based on the theoretical framework, six semi-structured interviews of people having the chosen professions answer the questions "Do counselors promote client's opportunities for self-realization in their work?" and "If so: how is this practiced?". In the theoretical framework three important concepts are addressed: "identity", "recognition" and "self-realization". These are explained with the help of works by including Emma Engdahl, Anthony Giddens, Axel Honneth and Allison Weir. Other influential theorists appearing are George H. Mead, Erving Goffman, Michel Foucault and Charles Taylor. The results show that respondents' practices are different but there is a similarity in the goals they are trying to achieve. The goal is that clients should have received tools to be free to set long-term goals and achieve them. Guidance and counseling is, according to the results of the essay, to create awareness for the clients of their own roles (mostly as job seekers) and enable the development of these.

Abstract:
Tyrimo rezultatai. Apžvelgiant A.H. Maslow’o, C. R. Rogers’o, G. W. Allport’o, E. Fromm’o, V. E. Frankl’io požiūrį į asmenį (saviaktualizaciją, besąlygišką pagarbą, propriumą, moralinį aspektą, prasmę), išryškintos esminės asmens struktūros –... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]
The study is based on the personalistic point of view and the evaluation of a person. The theme of self-developing, conscious actualisation of man’s value without loss of human nature is a matter of great relevance of modern-day problems, such as lack of opportunity and ability to live humanly, loneliness, every kind of national, cultural conflict, war etc. In this work the essence and features of a person’s value, and the sense of the process of this consciousness and actualisation are analysed. In this study God’s presence is not denied, but the religious question is not touched. To reach the aim, the work starts with the foundation of the theme on philosophical arguments. E. S. Brightman’s, M. Buber’s, E. Mounier’s, J. Lacroix’s explanations of the person are investigated and a thesis is formulated: The value of person is his self - creation based on human nature, pursued consciously, in relationship with others and always oriented towards the person. Secondly, the evaluation of psychological humanistic approach to the person was analysed. Emphasis was placed upon the individual continuous effort of attention to a person, moral relationship, connection of understanding, memory, fantasy with a man’s value, exact action and at the same time unlimited love and maturity. Self- esteem is grounded on objective evaluation of person and his actualisation together with others. The third part is dedicated to discussion about social issues (political... [to full text]

Abstract:
In today's World, Europe and even Lithuania context we see a very noticeable women activity. Nowadays it is not enough for them to take care of the house and children, to study at universities, to run their own business. Women take part in different political or social organizations, associations and clubs. What are their expectations? Having so little free time, they waste it on improving our imperfect world. And they have been doing it for more than two hundred years, since one of the earliest and most influential of women's clubs Sorosis was founded in New York City in 1868. As there were no studies in women's club movement in Lithuania, this paper aims to find out what are the expectations of women self-realization and self-actualization, and how they could be fulfilled participating in club activity.

Tyrimo objektas: Moksleivių fizinė saviugda. Tyrimo tikslas: Ištirti mokinių fizinę saviugdą. Tyrimo uždaviniai: 1. Ištirti mokinių fizinės saviugdos suvokimą. 2. Ištirti fizinės saviugdos suvokimą, lyties aspektu. 3. Abstract:
In order to achieve entire impact on personal culture, artistic education has to be based on anthropocentric orientation process self–realization. The process, stimulating a person’s activity and determining its aspect, is closely related to motivation. Musical performance may become a factor that generates the necessary motivation, if everyone who learns to play a musical instrument would interrelate the playing in concerts with self–realization. That is the problem from the educational point of view. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of musical performance on learning to play a musical instrument. The object of the study was the motivation of the students of 4–6 grades from music schools. They play different instruments and participate in concerts. Methods. The research for this study was conducted with the help of a questionnaire specially prepared for this research. 178 students of 4-6 grades from the music schools from Marijampole, Kaisiadorys and Raseinai participated in the study. They all learn to play different musical instruments. The questionnaire tested how the musical performance influences motivation, the students’ attitude towards participation in concerts, the factors determining their attitudes. Results. The results of the study showed that theoretically valid and empirically tested stimulus of playing in concerts with the chosen musical instrument influences the motivation of learning. Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyse the patterns of ancient myths that can be found in the novel Le Petit Prince by Antoine Saint-Exupery. In order to understand the culture and human behavior we will draw parallels to ancient myths and through the discovered myths in the novel, we will use the help of Carl Gustav Jung’s theory about the human psyche. The main questions are the following :  What are the patterns of ancient myths in the novel Le Petit Prince ? Do these myths carry any messages that we, as readers, can learn from ? In the introduction, a theorical backround is given which defines the concept of myth and explains briefly Jung’s theory. Our analysis shows that although myths differ from one another they all have the same roots. By this means, all characters in myths are archetypes that, according to Jung, are the same through history and in every culture. By studying the archetypes in this novel, like the divine child, Anima/Animus, the Sages etc., we are able to understand the plot more clearly. We are also aware of patterns that seem to repeat themselves through the generations. Our conclusion is that humans adapt easily to their surroundings and eventually lose their self-awareness. Therefore Saint-Exupery sends readers the message that we have to wake ourselves up to truly live our lives. Also we discovered that numerous archetypes that are present in all of myths, give us clues to self-realization, thus myths are necessary for people of all ages.

Abstract:

The present work intends to investigate the foundations for Axel Honneth’s Recognition Theory. In order to reach our goal, the text is divided into two central parts. Firstly, we analytically present Hegel’s Jena Lectures, aiming to approach the origins of the concept “recognition” and its theoretical involvement in the honnethian development of a “fight for recognition”. Secondly, we present and analyze the honnethian arguments for an update of Hegelian concepts which have enabled a normative ethics reconstitution. Honneth’s comprehension of recognition experience allows us to revise the model for the occurrence of intersubjective relations of self-realization. Herein, we evince these relations according to three spheres of recognition, namely, Love, Rights and Solidarity and their forms of self-realization.

Abstract:
This study presents a comparative analytical investigation of two divergent yet parallel doctrines of self-realization. John Dewey, a distinguished American thinker, represents a naturalist pragmatist conception of self-realization on the one hand, and 'Allama Tabataba'i, a renowned Muslim philosopher, an Islamic perception on the other. While Dewey is considered a spokesperson for modern American pragmatist and humanist thought, 'Allama may be seen as typical of Islamic Shi'i thinking. In dealing with their conceptualizations of self-realization, the intention in this study is to focus on some significant aspects of the human self, to rediscover its potentiality and to determine the wisdom behind self-realization from a comparative perspective. After outlining the two thinkers' scholarly backgrounds, instructional contexts, sources, methods, works and purposes, the study examines certain specific issues. It investigates their understandings of human nature, and explores their positions on moral experience and human character, as well as on the arts and sciences as vehicles for self-realization. As its final chapter, the study elaborates the basic elements and manifestations of self-realization as depicted in Dewey's and 'Allama's systems of thought. This research aims at clarifying the parallels, similarities and differences that exist between the two scholars, through an in-depth comparison of their respective naturalist and Islamic approaches and attitudes.

Full text
Abstract:
John Smith is best known as the charismatic leader and president of God's Squad Motorcycle Club, which seeks to proclaim and incarnate the Christian gospel in Australian outlaw motorcycle subculture. Smith is in fact an evangelist and public figure in his own right. As well he is a teacher and social commentator whose prophetic statements and interpretation of events had an impact in his own culture and abroad. He is also a media spokesman and unofficial 'priest' for thousands who feel themselves alienated from institutional expressions of Christianity, and the pioneering founder of alternative church congregations. This biographical and theoretical study focuses on the transformational nature of Smith's charisma: his vision of the gospel as a radical and morally transforming influence. And his drive to see God's Kingdom brought to bear on earth as in heaven. It addresses the nature of the gifts that have enabled this maverick religious leader to influence the lives of many in one of the most secular cultures in the world, and to win the admiration of more orthodox church leaders who would like to have been able to bridge sub-cultures as Smith has done. It questions how his charismatic gifts function, and to what end. The study also demonstrates how Smith's gifts and character have both enabled and impeded him in the process of applying his vision. Drawing on interviews with Smith and those who have known and worked with him, as well as on Smith's own writings, talks and broadcasts, his life and career arc examined in the light of current theories pertaining to charismatic and transformational leadership. In addition the significance of his life as a leader, pioneer and minister is assessed.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study postulates that drawing functions as a valuable vehicle that facilitates reciprocity between the drafter and her life-world. This relationship of exchange can bring about transformation of the self. The study is a qualitative study that aims to establish an understanding of how drawing functions as a vehicle facilitating reciprocity between the drafter and her life-world. In order to effectively research the transformative potential of reciprocity between artist, drawing, and life-world, theoretically and practically, the study is divided into two main parts. Firstly, it constitutes a theoretical section, which forms the foundation for further exploration in the second part of the study. Secondly, the study focuses on the practical manifestation of the theories as manifest in my drawings and in selected drawings of Diane Victor, whose work primarily functions as ‘a third person perspective’ in relation to my own work. The study is rooted in a psycho-analytical framework, focusing on Self psychology and Intersubjective Psychoanalysis of personality psychologists such as Jung, Miller, Goldberg and McAdams, amongst others, as well as the writings of philosophers, art historians and drawing theorists such as Jacques Derrida, Catherine de Zegher, and Suzi Gablik. Valuable links are forged between the transformative potential of drawing, the psychological and the spiritual. Parallels are drawn between notions derived from self-psychology and theology, based on the premise that human beings constitute body (physical aspect), soul (mind and emotion) and spirit, three components that are hardly divisible and that work together in drawing, effecting the transformation of the self. I argue that a failure to acknowledge the significance of the interactivity between these facets limits and inhibits the transformative potential of the drawing process. Through interactivity between the self and her life-world through drawing, moments of ‘recognition’ and ‘knowing’ occur - concerning hidden ‘truths’ of the self, which could affect personal transformation. In this study, life-world comprises inner and outer world, a visible and invisible world. The visible world focuses on the interaction of the self with nature and culture, and the invisible world focuses on the interaction of the self with a psychic world, which includes the workings of the conscious and unconscious mind in drawing and their connection with a spiritual dimension. The spiritual aspect in drawing is researched through the notions of transformative “presence” and the “transcendent function” of drawing. The study explores the psychological and spiritual value of drawings as transformative selfobjects to address the general neglect of the spiritual. I affirm that there exists a mutually conducive potential and influence that the interplay between the spiritual and the psychological in the drawing process bring about. As a “selfobject”, a drawing attains its own ‘silent visual language’ replacing or assisting the role of the therapist, becoming pivotal in a transformative ‘interpersonal dialogue’. Lastly, Jung (Miller, 2004:4) claims that the unification of the conscious and unconscious eventually results in “a living birth that leads to a new level of being, a new situation” (Miller, 2004:4).

Abstract:
Tyrimo tikslas. Ištirti koncertinės veiklos įtaką muzikos mokyklos pradinių klasių mokinių muzikinės kultūros ugdymui. Tyrimo objektas. Muzikos mokyklos pradinių klasių mokinių koncertinės veiklos poveikis jų muzikinės kultūros ugdymui. Tyrimo hipotezė – mokinių koncertinė veikla teigiamai veikia... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]

Abstract:

The background of this study emanates from individuals’ change in relation to their social context, such as leisure time activities, family, and friends, which they participate in and take part off. This study takes it starting point in examining the possible influence of advanced studies in higher education on personal development. The aim is to investigate whether there is any relation, on basis of the student’s motivation for higher studies, between higher education and the way to self-realization. The empirical data consists of interviews with students, from different faculties at the University of Karlstad, who has at least 2 years (80 credit points) of university training off which 60 points concern of specific scientific subject. The interview questions address the relationship between the student and their family and friends. Personal development has been assessed in relation to Charles Taylor’s self-realization theory. The analysis shows that the influence of higher education on self-realization varies. Most respondents in the survey group experienced personal growth during their study time although their studies, in some cases did not seem to have had any effect. Some respondents did not experience personal growth at all.

Akdogan, Sule. "Representation Of Nature In D.h. Lawrence&#039." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612239/index.pdf.

Abstract:
The present study lays bare the relationship between nature and the individual in the novels of D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf through an analysis of their uses of natural images. It starts with an overview of the different view points of different critics who have studied these writers&rsquo
uses of nature and the way these writers treat nature. This critical overview eventually affirmed that the relationship between the individual and nature is central to these writers&rsquo
uses of nature. Being modernist writers, D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf are both interested in the psychology of individuals. Although they differ in their ways of depiction, they employ natural imagery to depict the psychology of the individuals, which can be defined as their Romantic sensibility toward nature. In both writers, though nature is more central to Lawrence&rsquo
s works than to those of Woolf&rsquo
s, nature is of great importance in the creation and representation of characters. Through their contact with nature, their characters experience self-realization as they reveal their hidden selves and as they find ties between their selves and nature. More specifically, this study tries to examine how Lawrence and Woolf depict nature in order to reveal the psychology of characters in relation to their experiencing self-realization in Lawrence&rsquo
s Women in Love (1920) and The Plumed Serpent (1926) and Woolf&rsquo
s The Voyage Out (1915) and Orlando: A Biography (1928).

Grizzard, Jeannine Annette. "Integralism and Objectivism on Forms of the Mind/Body Dichotomy in Western Thought." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2005. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/philosophy_theses/1.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis compares philosophers Ken Wilber (Integralism) and Leonard Peikoff (Objectivism), who argue that Western philosophy is saturated with a fallacious mind/body dichotomy, which they trace historically and psychologically. Wilber’s and Peikoff’s agendas, worldviews and starting points are contrasted, specifically, Wilber’s holons, Kosmos model, the Big Three Value Spheres and Peikoff’s metaphysical axioms. Their definitions of consciousness are reviewed, along with their mutual epistemological emphasis on knowledge as contextual. Wilber makes mystical validity claims supported by stages of cognitive development. Discussed attributes of the mind/body dualism are: regression and repression; control versus chaos; hedonism, uniformity and authoritarianism; Subjectivism and Intrinsicism; Ego-agency versus Eco-communion. Both philosophers maintain that each partial strategy collapses into the dysfunctions of the opposite strategy. Their respective models of resolution through integration are presented in conclusion, particularly Wilber’s case for nondual Self-realization.

Abstract:
My thesis focuses on agricultural livelihoods and EU integration in the Southern Carpathian Mountains of Romania.  I analyse how the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was deployed by policy makers and elites in the first year after EU membership, and how it shaped the livelihood possibilities of tarani (peasants).  Given the polarised nature of Romania’s post-socialist agrarian structure, the CAP excluded peasants from its policies, and demanded they change their exploatatii/ferme de subzistenta; (subsistence farms) into commercial farms.  Arguing from the premise that ‘subsistence farms’ are actually gospodarii taranesti (peasant households) working on different principles from farms altogether, it was possible to inquire into the strategies people deployed resourcefully in their everyday work to keep making a living. I analyse EU integration as a modern political and economic project that seeks to make the radically complicated pathways of people and things ‘transparent’.  I pursue the question of how the neoliberal expansion of economic rationality to all spheres of life shapes the actions of people. My ethnography captures the unease people felt in the face of the current transformation of value and illustrates how a much longer history of devaluing peasants has been taking place.  It makes clear how the devaluation of peasants and their produce is part of a larger epistemological project of development and progress.  My analytical framework enables me to show how the effects of polarisation and externalisation have had serious consequences for the ways people think about questions of freedom, success, merit and the ‘just state’ in Romania today.  My research suggests the need for a broader epistemological shift in the face of crisis, from a dominance approach towards commons thinking.

Abstract:
This paper aims to explore the human experience of obligations towards themselves. Do they believe thatthere are such? If so, what are they and how do they feel? Through a web-based survey and eleven semistructuredinterviews this topic has been explored. The result shows that all participants in the interviewstudy believes that it has obligations to themselves. Of the 229 respondents in the survey 84.88 percentresponded that they thought they had obligations towards themselves. Furthermore, the results showed thatthese obligations mainly comprised post-material values and expressions as "to be true to yourself" and "tostand up for your opinions" were prevalent. Besides this, there was also a conflict with others when many ofthe respondents in the interview study felt that they owed themselves to "say no". Finally, respondents ratedtheir own health as well as high opportunity to express their personality highly.
