Abstract:
Advertising is an essential way of communicating value to the audience. Adlede does this with context in focus when finding articles with right content to the right campaigns. To know if matching articles are good, advertisers need to get statistics from the campaign. Today a tool for this does not exist. This master thesis analyses, how to best develop a self-serve, user-friendly campaign management tool for publishing a campaign and shows results from the campaign.   This thesis design and create a concept of a management tool with help of frequently used UX design method. To get a solution for this concept, interviews, designs, prototypes and user testing have taken place. A final design suggestion has been determined.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that we can establish better relationships with our buildings by introducing more means to control and customise them to suit our needs and preferences. The study investigates contemporary office buildings and emphasises the importance of making our workplace environment more flexible, desirable, and durable by introducing cybernetic relationships between buildings and their users. The thesis concludes with a suggestion that the introduction of Co-adaptable environments, in which building users and their built environment positively affect and improve each other, is the key to achieving such environments.

McNaney, Roisin. "The design and evaluation of novel technologies for the self monitoring and management of Parkinson's symptoms." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3390.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how digital technologies might better support people with Parkinson’s (PwP) to take control of their condition, by engaging in self monitoring and management practices. The specific focus of this thesis is around issues managed by Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) (namely drooling and speech and voice changes). Three case studies were used to explore the ways that different technologies might be configured to aid the self monitoring and management of these speech and drooling symptoms. The first case study describes an evaluation of PDCue, a wrist worn device to assist the self management of drooling through the use of a temporal cueing method, to increase swallowing frequency. This study showed evidence that drooling can be behaviourally self managed through cueing—like other symptoms of Parkinson’s such as gait freezing—and proved a viable first step towards re-considering the use of additional medications as a first option for drooling treatment. However, whilst this study proved successful in understanding the ways in which a simple, temporal cueing technique might support drooling management, it opened up questions around the ways in which PwP might use technology to actively think about and understand their condition through self monitoring, and use this information to support self management practices further. In response, the second case study describes the design and evaluation of LApp, an application to support both the self monitoring and management of vocal loudness issues through the use of an insitu cueing approach. The Google Glass was chosen as the platform to run the cueing method on, due to its technical capabilities as a multi-sensor, wearable platform, to analyse a constant stream of audio and provide real time visual prompts to support the wearer in increasing their volume at times when it is needed in conversation. This study highlighted how participants saw value in LApp in supporting their loudness issues, but also noted a desire for participants to understand more about their speech and the SLT strategies that they were required to do in order to improve it. The third case study drew upon this desire for increased understanding by developing and evaluating Speeching, which employed crowdsourcing through a smartphone application to support the self monitoring of speech and voice changes, through the provision of human feedback, and the subsequent effect that this feedback had on self management practices. This study yielded positive responses from participants, who valued the anonymous feedback from the crowd and the support that this provided them in configuring their home based speech practice. A final discussion chapter draws the 3 case studies together and discusses the lessons learned throughout the research. It discusses the overall research questions for the thesis in detail and describes the implications of the research for the wider HCI and medical communities. A framework is presented which aims to visualise the levels of agency that the studied technologies afforded and the levels of responsiveness required by participants to make sense of, and implement the information being provided by the devices in order to facilitate a change to the self monitoring and management practices. Through the design and evaluation of the described technologies and a synthesis of the findings across the span of the research, this thesis explores the ways in which PwP, with a diverse range of symptoms and related physical, social and emotional issues, might value digital technologies and their potential to facilitate new forms of self monitoring and self management in their everyday lives.

Abstract:
In today's society, there is a technology that not everyone thinks about, namely Self-Service Technology (SST). Self-Service Technology is often in one's vicinity. Companies use this technology to satisfy their customers faster and more smoothly. This study was performed on Monitor's ERP System AB's Online help using a quantitative method. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the importance of the different dimensions of Self-Service Technology (SST) for customer satisfaction. To then generate new knowledge and suggestions for improvements to SST and web-based customer support systems. To conduct this study, an exploratory factor analysis was used on the 7 dimensions within Self-Service Technology and the dimension customer satisfaction. The results showed that the two dimensions functionality and convenience had the strongest connection to the dimension customer satisfaction. Therefore, businesses similar to Monitor's ERP System AB should focus on improving the functionality and convenience dimensions to achieve better customer satisfaction.

Abstract:
Aboriginal communities have been over researched in the past. They are looking at new ways to regain and recapture their culture, language and identity and are in the procès of taking ownership of research processes, concepts and tools. In an attempt to revisit participatory-action research approach and adapt it to aboriginal contexts, we have developed research collaborations with 13 communities from Northern Canada (Cree and Inuit) and Northern Scandinavia (Saami) and organised 20 workshops using collaborative research techniques and tools developed by Chevalier and Buckles from Carleton University. This approach and the tool kit we produced prove to be useful and timely. We were able to address the concerms and challenges that the communities have to face, develop research collaborations between the Cree, the Inuit and the Saami, study community engagement processes in tourism projects and explore new aboriginal research metholodogies. At the same time and during this 3 year Marie Curie research fellowship, we have been exploring the possibilities of developing collaborative research on line via the web 2.0 and ITC. We uploaded 200 aboriginal tourism initiatives represented in the “Aboriginal Destinations” Guidebook, connected their authors in a Content Management System SPIP (www.aboriginal-ecotourism.org), incorporating a variety of integrated technologies: Google Maps™ to provide the geographic placement of the communities; a webbased survey to produce dynamic statistical data to translate the information provided in the narratives/articles into statistical data; discussion forums to add qualitative comments to the quantitative data

Le, Trong Nhan. "Global power management system for self-powered autonomous wireless sensor node." Thesis, Rennes 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014REN1S048/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The limited energy and recharge cycles of batteries are crippling the design of autonomous Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). To overcome this issue, everlasting harvested energy and supercapacitor-based energy storage are considered as potential solutions to achieve a theoretically infinite lifetime. A Power Manager (PM) is embedded in each WSN node to respect the Energy Neutral Operation condition (ENO), which means harvested energy is equal to consumed energy for a long period. In this thesis, a set of PMs are proposed for energy harvesting WSN nodes to adapt their average consumed energy by changing the wake-up interval according to the available harvested energy. Our PMs are low complexity, independent of energy sources, small memory footprint and therefore, can be easily implemented on a real EH-WSN node. Another issue addressed in this thesis when considering a multi-hop EH-WSN is the effect of wake-up interval variations to the global QoS. Due to its low harvested energy, a relay node is impractical to synchronize with a transmitter if its wake-up interval regularly changes, therefore degrading the global QoS. A new power manager, named Wake-up Variation Reduction power manager (WVR-PM) is proposed to reduce the variations of the wake-up interval. By using WVR-PM, the throughput of a multi-hop EH-WSN can be improved up to 59% compare to state-of-the-art PMs while the average consumed energy for one successful communication is reduced by 45%

Abstract:
The theme of this thesis approaches the power relations in the school management, focusing the professionals who work at the management group, through the analysis of their speeches, their truths, constituted over the cultural formation process each one was submitted. The Thesis starts with the begin cultural constitution of each every human being as unique based on the as technologies of self, expression word used by Michel Foucault. We highlight the sexuality as an element with strong constitutive characteristics that will affect the life of this human being, in all fields, whether professional or private life. We analyze various forms and understandings of what is school management, also focusing on the proposed administrative and pedagogical management methodology of Sinodal Network of Education. It is analyzed the pedagogical proposal of a education institution in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, affiliated to the same network teaching. The theoretical reference is based on Foucault, showing the influence of Nietzsche, at the analysis and writing of the philosopher in question. The methodology was the qualitative approach, through a ethnographic case study. With the objective of being able to overcome the linearity in the method of research, it was used the bricolage as an available tool in this task. We intend to get at least two points of human subjectivity among the involved professional in the research process, either through the questionnaire as the conversation and observation.

Abstract:
Contexte.
Background. The general objective of this thesis was to evaluate a hybrid pedagogical method using an integrated learning environment (ILE) in the training of health professionals. Three research questions followed one after the other. Does the acceptability of blended learning affect students' learning strategies and learning approaches? Does the acceptability of an ILE affect students' self-efficacy? What characteristics of a dematerialised course make students' attention variable?Materials & Methods. We carried out 2 quantitative observational studies, as well as a single-blind observational experiment coupled with a qualitative analysis, with different classes of midwifery students of Grenoble-Alpes University Faculty of Medicine.Results. Students have suited learning approaches and strategies despite the use of a hybrid teaching method which they reject; there is no correlation between poor acceptability of the ILE and different spheres of students' self-efficacy; and the variability of attention declared by students varies according to certain factors common to those detected by artificial intelligence (type of language, slide duration…).Discussion. The internal and external validities of this work highlight the close links between interest, motivation, engagement by identification, and attention. It is thus possible to put forward principles of pedagogical engineering in health within the framework of dematerialized courses focusing on the content, form and type of knowledge capsule. Finally, the health teacher must above all be “connected to” the students, so that technical developments can be adapted to their needs

Abstract:
Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is one promising attempt at solving some of the 5G challenges. NFV is about running network functions as virtualized workloads on commodity hardware. This may optimize deployment costs and simplify the life cycle management, but it introduces new challenges such as the dynamic network topology and the lack of visibility. In this thesis, we propose a self-modeling algorithm and an active diagnosis process to face these challenges. We define a dependency model learned from faults injection. The self-modeling and the active diagnosis approach was applied to the real-world virtual Ip Multimedia Subsystem (vIMS) use-case

Oprea, Liviu. "Health technologies for self-management : an ethical appraisal of the impact of self-management technologies on doctor-patient relationships." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/80032.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes to our understanding of the moral dimensions of using self-management technologies in general practice. Through qualitative interviews with general practitioners (GPs) and patients with experience in home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) utilization, it examines the influences of HBPM on the general practitioner-patient relationship, patient responsibility for their health and patient autonomy. The first part of this thesis provides an account of the ethical implications of self-management technologies and their related practices for the doctor-patient relationship (DPR), patients’ responsibility for their health and patient autonomy. This account is contrasted with models of the DPR drawn from the bioethics and clinical literature, and with the conceptions of patient responsibility and patient autonomy that inform these models. Self-management technologies and their related practices have the potential to be more ethically robust than ordinary care. They may be able to influence patients’ health agency by promoting their cognitive and emotional abilities and, through this, change health outcomes for chronically-ill patients. However, there are a number of pertinent ethical issues concerning mutual trust in the DPR, patient responsibility and patient autonomy that need further empirical clarification. Building upon the theoretical material covered in the first part of the thesis, the second half describes an empirical study, which consisted of a series of interviews with GPs (n = 13) and patients (n = 19). HBPM was used as a case study for self-management technologies. The interviews focused on participants’ experiences with HBPM as a means to collect experiential narrative material relevant to answer the research questions. The findings are presented across two domains: the GP-patient relationship and patients’ responsibility for their health. GPs’ and patients’ views of these ethical notions are presented comparatively. Mutual trust in the DPR plays an important role in promoting patients’ motivation to maintain their health, which in turn, underpins all dimensions of patients’ responsibility for their health. In the final part of the thesis, these two themes from the empirical findings are drawn together with the theoretical material. I emphasize the significance of these findings for the bioethics literature concerning the DPR, patient responsibility and patient autonomy and for the conceptual base of self-management technologies. The implications of these conclusions for bioethics, general practice and public health are then considered.

Mndzebele, Nomsa Margareth. "The use of information and communication technologies in South African hotels : a self-evaluation by hotel managers." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/5775.

Full text
Abstract:
It is fair to assume that the level of participation in a world economy depends on the capacity of business organisations to use technology efficiently. Conducting business in the world today is driven by information technology. Internet technology has changed various business activities and transactions. In the Internet age, the development of electronic commerce (EC) is considered a major indicator of the overall competitiveness of organisations. An EC marketing channel can bring customers more benefits such as greater shopping convenience and potentially lower prices. Today, most hotels have been forced by the market to consider adopting EC to carry out business processes more efficiently. Hence, the purpose of the study is to determine the determinants of EC adoption by hotels in South Africa. This study is based on Tornatzky and Fleicher’s (1990) technological, organizational and environmental (TOE) model that includes technological context, organisational context and environmental context. The TOE model has been widely used to examine the factors that influence organisational technology adoption. The research model looked at eight determinants, which are (1) relative advantage, (2) compatibility, (3) complexity, (4) organisational size, (5) technology knowledge, (6) managers’ attitudes towards EC, (7) information intensity and (8) competition. A quantitative research design was used and a questionnaire was used to collect data and answer the research questions in the study. Four hundred hotels were randomly selected from the three groups of hotels suggested by the South African Tourism office, i.e. (1) Tourism Grading council hotel listing, (2) Tshwane accommodation listing and (3) AA travel accommodation. A total of 332 questionnaires were collected for data analysis, which represents a 94.9% response rate. Descriptive statistics, correlational statistics, one way analysis of variance, (ANOVA), regression analysis, cross tabulation tests and multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) were used to analyse the data. The results indicated that all three contexts (TOE) were important in the decision of EC adoption by the hotels in South Africa. The findings indicated that not all the determinants used had a statistically significant relationship with the extent of EC adoption in the hotel industry. The researcher also found out that hotels were more concerned about the benefits of EC than the organisational ability to adopt EC, the hotels that had sufficient resources were more willing to adopt EC. The findings also indicated that managers’ attitude towards EC adoption is influential on the extent of EC adoption. Finally, findings indicated that there is a lot of pressure from suppliers and customers for the hotels to use EC. Even though the mangers that filled in the questionnaire were computer literate, technology knowledge of EC would help managers to realise which systems are most appropriate.

Mosher, Erin M. "The Impact of Self-Service Technologies in the Hotel Industry on Employee Job Satisfaction." 2013. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/theses/1072.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aimed to discover whether the use of specific self-service technologies (SSTs) within hotels impacts employees’ attitudes and satisfaction with their working environment. The main goal of this study was to determine the existence of a relationship between the usage of self-service technology within hotels and actual measured employee job satisfaction. The outcome of this research allowed for providing both academic and practical knowledge regarding the impact of self-service technologies on the hotel industry. Research has shown that high levels of job satisfaction are connected with positive attitudes regarding workplace (Stanley, 2013) and that attitude has an indirect impact on firm financial performance (Rucci et al., 1998). Therefore, the rationale of this study was based on this pre-determined awareness that employee job satisfaction impacts firm bottom line performance. The data collection methodology used for this thesis research was a survey that was distributed directly to hotel employees. This survey focused on usage of self-service technologies within hotels, employee attitude towards these technologies, as well as, employee job satisfaction. The results indicated that these three self-service technologies have no impact on hotel employee job satisfaction. However, it appears that there may be some minor link between employees’ attitude toward certain self-service technologies used in their establishment, and their overall job satisfaction

Abstract:

While the energy field has been primarily dominated by fossil fuels such as coal and oil, there is evidence that renewable energy sources are starting to gain a stronger foothold in the energy market to accommodate growth (Debbage, 2008; Intelligent, 2008; Sterzinger, 2006). This has been the result of greater social concern, as well as tax and other government incentives (Intelligent, 2008; Debbage, 2008). Due to these trends, a growing market opportunity exists for cities and states to increase their renewable energy component production (Intelligent, 2008; Regional, 2013; Debbage, 2008; IPCC, 2014). The primary purpose of this study was to survey existing manufacturers in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky to obtain information and identify manufacturers who: were currently in the renewable energy market, interested in entering the renewable energy market, or have no interest in entering the renewable energy market. Respondents also addressed potential barriers to the growth of the renewable energy field including workforce development, government policy, and investment capital. A total of 25 companies responded to the survey. Correlation analysis was used and determined that no significant correlation existed between surveyed companies who identified themselves as suppliers of renewable energy components and those companies who were identified as possible suppliers of renewable energy components within the REPP (Renewable Energy Policy Project) standards. This study builds on previous methodology used by Debbage (2008) for North Carolina.

Lalonde, Martin.

Full text
Abstract:
The housing crisis is generally apprehended as a simple disparity between the availability of affordable housing and the population’s needs. This dissertation's objective is to go beyond this reasoning by questioning the adequacy between public housing’s planning and the targeted population’s needs, the latter being determined by sociocultural traits in complex and dynamic evolutions. Social housing of an inappropriate size, for considerations of profitability, leading to an overpopulation, could only generate its fast deterioration. This dissertation thus approaches the anthropological theme of the influence of housing organization and public or private living spaces on human societies. The case of Algeria is of particular interest because of its virulence and the French politics importation at the moment of the colonization, whose aim was the assimilation of Algerians to occidental behaviours and models of consumerism. This dissertation tries to demonstrate that the various governments who held power after the independence have resumed the colonial politics in matters of city planning. Moreover, the growing frequency of informal practices for collecting rare strategic goods at the source for speculative reasons, including social housing, was accelerated by the housing market liberalization and the privatization of social housing. This created a situation in which very few social housing has been given to families really needing it, thus being even more marginalized and needing to resort to informal practices, hoping to improve their housing conditions.
