Abstract:
In recent years, the number of studies covering mindfulness, self-compassion practices, progressive relaxation, meditation and other self-help therapies or therapeutic interventions has grown rapidly. The vast interest in the field has caused fragmentation in methodological approaches and theoretical models, as well as a diffuse use of terminology, which makes it challenging to compare and critically evaluate the results of various studies. The purpose of this article is to collect and analyze the main trends and conclusions of theoretical and practical research devoted to self-help practices in recent years (2012-2017). The strategy in source selection was the following: a) researching the PsychArticles section of ProQuest database; b) main search criterion: Subject ("Self-Help Techniques"); c) additional search criteria: time of publication; peer-reviewed articles. For further analysis a research question was raised: what research topics appear in these sources and how are they elaborated? To answer it a narrative content analysis approach was used. As a result, five most significant research topics, which show an overview of latest tendencies in the research of self-help practices, were identified.

Abstract:
Self-help books on behavioural and general psychological techniques for sport competitors have proliferated in recent years. As with self-help books in general, there is concern over the validity of these books and their ability to help an athlete develop positive and lasting changes in cognitive and behavioural control skills. This article looks at some of the current issues for behavioural self-help in general, and examines three popular self-help books for athletes. They are examined both from the point of view of independent use by the athlete, and from that of their use as adjuncts to face-to-face therapy.

Abstract:
In the UK, recent guidelines on the treatment of depression and anxiety recommend CBT-based self-help materials as one important component of services. However, despite being based on specific CBT techniques or “empirically grounded interventions”, early optimism has been dented by data from recent studies that have cast doubt on the effectiveness of the current generation of these materials. As a consequence, it may be necessary to consider that other factors may contribute to the overall magnitude of CBT effects. Indeed, it is logically inconsistent to argue that specific factors are pre-eminent in CBT whilst maintaining that delivery via therapists is more likely to be effective than self-help. The contribution of “common factors” that operate in personal therapeutic encounters, for example, therapist responsiveness and the patient-therapist alliance, may be one possible overlooked reason for the reduced ef-fectiveness of self-help materials. The development of the next generation of self-help materials, therefore, may benefit from the testing of materials that combine common and specific factors, including specific measurement of the strength of common factors and their relationship to clinical outcomes. We discuss a model of such common factors and suggest how they could be incorporated into the next generation of CBT based self-help materials.

The authors conducted an exploratory study of the coverage of the problem of the availability of self-help applications for patients with anxiety-depressive disorder. The analysis of applications available in electronic digital form has revealed a large number of developments that provide diagnostic procedures and meditative practices of various kinds. The studied applications do not have such functionality as entry diagnostic testing, which helps track the dynamics of anxiety and depression in the user. The considered applications offer assistance in mastering meditative and breathing techniques without taking into account the state in which the user is before, during, and after the use of meditative techniques. In addition, a significant disadvantage of these developments is the lack of a Russian interface for the applications. The authors note the interest of users in such applications and the feasibility of working for their improvement.

Abstract:
To adequately conceptualize the potential that self-help groups hold for delivering human services it is important to know about the helping ex-changes between members. Only a few quantified comparative studies of this issue have been completed, and the extent of their generalizability is not known. This paper reports a replication of one of these studies. Rating patterns on a group process questionnaire for the thirteen groups participating in this replication study were robustly correlated with those for the eight groups in the original study. The results also suggested that patterns of helping activities are affected by such organizational factors as meeting format and level of professional involvement. To clarify the nature of these mediating factors and their impact on group functioning it will be useful to explicate the dimensions of heterogeneity between groups in the future and to further refine existing techniques for the measurement of helping exchanges.

Abstract:
Neoliberal ideologies have been globalized through development practices, and these have tended to be received as seductive, even quasi-magical solutions for all. Offering an ethnographic window into what happens when these development policies are implemented for disabled members of rural communities in contemporary India, this paper captures disabled people's experiences as they move through the circuits of neoliberal development projects of the World Bank in rural areas of South India. Based on a multi-year ethnographic study of a disability self-help group project, it analyzes various material and discursive mechanisms by which groups get comported as self-government techniques that are limiting the scope of the state. Simultaneously, it captures ways in which disabled people manage to subvert millennial development and its assemblages to create emancipatory possibilities. A disability analytic reveals fissures in the implicit promises of development—its temporalities, spatialities, socialities, and embodied capacities – and critiques its foundational assumptions through the social worlds of those at its margins.

Abstract:
One of the key elements in having an effective teaching and learning atmosphere goes through classroom management that has gone through series of innovations, from animal leathers used to store data, cave walls used for talents and other purposes; to the alleged digital age, with digital tablets, touchpads, smart boards, special schools with utmost utilities serving both teachers and students spreading all over the world. Moreover, internet oriented education is widening the concept of school to anywhere, anytime. Nevertheless, different needs brought different approaches and strategies to solve the problems of classroom management. The 21st century self-management techniques require quite complex approaches. In today's world technological devices are part of everyday life as our needs brought us to overcome difficulties as well as making life easier. We started education on clay tablets, and had blackboards, then white boards, and now we are getting back to tablets, but this time multitasking digital ones. Smart boards, labs, and multimedia rooms are now serving educational purposes. Thus, in this article, together with aforementioned innovations, it is aimed to present some better ways that may help overcome today's challenges of classroom management in terms of self-management techniques. The set of 10 principles suggested by Thomas J. Zirpoli is dredged up to shed light on the issue or help instructors to develop their own techniques within the process of classroom management. The vitality of students' study skills and secure attachment are perceived in regard with redemption of overwhelming challenges of self-management techniques.

Abstract:
BackgroundSAM (Self-help for Anxiety Management) is a mobile phone app that provides self-help for anxiety management. Launched in 2013, the app has achieved over one million downloads on the iOS and Android platform app stores. Key features of the app are anxiety monitoring, self-help techniques, and social support via a mobile forum (“the Social Cloud”). This paper presents unique insights into eMental health app usage patterns and explores user behaviors and usage of self-help techniques.ObjectiveThe objective of our study was to investigate behavioral engagement and to establish discernible usage patterns of the app linked to the features of anxiety monitoring, ratings of self-help techniques, and social participation.MethodsWe use data mining techniques on aggregate data obtained from 105,380 registered users of the app’s cloud services.ResultsEngagement generally conformed to common mobile participation patterns with an inverted pyramid or “funnel” of engagement of increasing intensity. We further identified 4 distinct groups of behavioral engagement differentiated by levels of activity in anxiety monitoring and social feature usage. Anxiety levels among all monitoring users were markedly reduced in the first few days of usage with some bounce back effect thereafter. A small group of users demonstrated long-term anxiety reduction (using a robust measure), typically monitored for 12-110 days, with 10-30 discrete updates and showed low levels of social participation.ConclusionsThe data supported our expectation of different usage patterns, given flexible user journeys, and varying commitment in an unstructured mobile phone usage setting. We nevertheless show an aggregate trend of reduction in self-reported anxiety across all minimally-engaged users, while noting that due to the anonymized dataset, we did not have information on users also enrolled in therapy or other intervention while using the app. We find several commonalities between these app-based behavioral patterns and traditional therapy engagement.

Abstract:
Increasing cases of depression and stress each year are related to increasing rates of divorce, academic or employment demands and social pressure. Not infrequently families who have family members who experience depression make it a family burden. Family perception of the stressor will affect the level of burden in the family and can affect the level of stress and family self esteem. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of Self Help Group on self esteem and Stress levels on Families with Depression at the Poly Psychology of the Kalitidu Health Center. The design of this study was True experimental with pre-posttest design. The sampling technique uses simple random sampling as many as 32 respondents, with 16 control group respondents and 16 family respondents with depressed patients who received a Self Help group. Data analysis techniques using Wilcoxon statistical test and mannwhitny. The results of this study indicate that there is an effect of self help group on self esteem and stress levels in families with depressed patients in mental health clinics of KalitiduBojonegoro with p value in the man whitney test of 0.005 in self esteem and 0.000 in stress levels and p value the value of the Wilcoxon test is 0.025 in self esteem and 0.001 in the stress level, all of which are less than the error level (α = 0.05). The effect of self help group on self esteem and stress level proves the change from before being treated in the intervention group, this proves that the treatment will be a stimulus in assessing a person's self-esteem and stress level with family members with depression

Abstract:
Improving academic grades within the core areas of English, Science and Mathematics has had a lot of previous research interest, but research has tended to mostly focus on students who are failing, non-athletically talented students or student athletes at collegiate level. The particular needs of athletically talented secondary school students who are academically underperforming have so far been neglected. This study addressed this issue by measuring the outcome of academic grades in these three core areas. Method: During a six week intervention programme, ninety four students were separated into 4 groups: control, heart rate variability biofeedback, performance psychology skills training and a combination of these two interventions. Changes in self-efficacy and self-regulation for all students were also measured. Results: Significant pre–post intervention differences in all academic subjects and generalised self-efficacy were found when compared to the control group. Results also showed that a combination of interventions with medium–large effect size was more effective in improving academic results than the single interventions on their own. All interventions improved self-efficacy, but were not significantly different from each other. Self-efficacy was found not to have any interaction effects. Conclusion: Sport psychological skills training can help student-athletes achieve higher scholastic grades and aid mindfulness intervention. Mindfulness on its own was not found to be the most effective intervention, and as such should be used as an adjunct to other psychological methods. Psychological skills training (PST) may help students generalize approaches used in sport to the academic arena.

Abstract:
Education is a process that supports self-development and formation, making it possible to cope with all changes and problems with an open mind and creative approach without losing identity. This community provides Ice Breaking to Help the Children in Suwung Village in Starting the Process of Self-Establishment. This Community service Program activity aims to provide learning that can help the fostered children in Suwung Village, provide learning in a pleasant atmosphere to be applied to the fostered children in Suwung Village, and provide knowledge about models, media, and learning techniques—needed by the foster children in Suwung Village in the learning community in Suwung Village. The method of this community service is the program offered to partners in the icebreaking learning model. This learning model is carried out in two ways: playing together and singing as explained by Setyawan (2015) that icebreaking was carried out with two events, namely playing and singing. The result of this community service program show that the problems faced by partners are the lack of learning models that can help the fostered children in Suwung Village, partners need learning in a pleasant atmosphere to be applied to the fostered children in Suwung Village, and the lack of attention to models, media, and learning techniques needed by foster children in Suwung Village. Thus, this PKM activity is carried out to provide learning that can help the formation of the guided children in Suwung Village, provide learning in a pleasant atmosphere to be applied to the fostered children in Suwung Village, and provide knowledge about models, media, and learning techniques needed by the assisted children in Suwung Village in the learning community in Suwung Village.

Abstract:
Both men with prostate cancer and their caregivers report experiencing a number of challenges and health consequences, and require programs to help support the cancer patient–caregiver dyad. A tailored, web-based, psychosocial and physical activity self-management program (TEMPO), which implements behavior change techniques to help facilitate behavior change for the dyads was created and its acceptability was tested in a qualitative study. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to explore the dyads’ experiences using behavior change techniques to change behavior and address current needs and challenges while enrolled in TEMPO. Multiple semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 prostate cancer-caregiver dyads over the course of the program, resulting in 46 transcripts that were analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis. Results revealed four main themes: (1) learning new behavior change techniques, (2) engaging with behavior change techniques learned in the past, (3) resisting full engagement with behavior change techniques, and (4) experiencing positive outcomes from using behavior change techniques. The dyads’ discussions of encountering behavior change techniques provided unique insight into the process of learning and implementing behavior change techniques through a web-based self-management program, and the positive outcomes that resulted from behavior changes.

Abstract:
The high risk of mental health problems among medical students has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, which greatly reduced social contact. The mental health support service of the medical school of one Hungarian university was transferred to the online learning management system and was expanded by self-help materials in three domains: Improving study skills, stress management techniques, and reducing stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We wanted to understand the preferences of medical students for psychological self-help techniques by investigating the pattern of access to online self-help materials and the characteristics of the users. Access to the online materials between April 2020 and April 2021 among Hungarian and international medical students was analyzed using the logging data of the system. Of all the students who logged in during the examination period (n = 458), 36.6–40.4% viewed materials to improve study skills and 23–29% viewed stress management materials, of which short-duration audio format techniques were preferred. The access rate of content targeting coping with the mental health effects of COVID-19 was 9.5–24%. Support to improve study skills is significantly more preferred than interventions targeting distress-reduction. The pattern of access can be used for the development of interventions that are of most interest to medical students.

Abstract:
Purpose Refugees and asylum seekers often present complex health needs, including chronic pain, related to traumatic experiences. To help them manage their pain, the Wellbeing and Self-Care Service provides health advice, pain education, soft tissue manual therapies and training in self-help techniques. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach A 0-10 pain scale (0= no pain, 10= very severe pain) is used to record reported intensity of pain before and after treatment. Change is analysed by comparing the position of a tick on the scale before and after therapy. In follow-up appointments, attendees were asked whether they were practicing self-help techniques; if they experienced improvement, and if so, how long it lasted; and whether they had reduced the use of painkillers. Findings From April 2014 to March 2015, 192 people were seen in 524 therapeutic encounters (63 per cent females, 37 per cent males). In total, 173 (90 per cent) were asylum seekers and refugees. Of the refugees and asylum seekers, 40 per cent were torture survivors. After treatment, 53 per cent of the 192 people treated showed a major reduction of pain, and 39 per cent a moderate reduction. In follow-up encounters, 87 per cent reported improvement (⩾2 weeks, 46 per cent), 70 per cent reported a reduction in the use of painkillers and 83 per cent reported that they practiced self-help techniques to different degrees. Originality/value Soft tissue manual therapies combined with education and training that emphasise communication and active patient participation in the healing process are non-invasive therapeutic approaches that can confer temporary relief to refugees and asylum seekers suffering chronic pain.

Abstract:
This research tested a multicomponent self-help manual that contained nicotine fading and some behavioral techniques. It also evaluated the incremental effects of using higher amounts of therapist contact on quitting rates. 114 smokers were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: (1) A 10-session multicomponent program (n = 25); (2) a 5-session multicomponent program (n = 31); (3) a 5-session multicomponent plus a self-help manual program (n = 25); and (4) a self-help-manual-only program (n = 33). A control group (n = 48) did not receive any treatment. The distinctive characteristic of the treatments was the different amount of therapist contact. Common components of the programs were a refundable deposit, self-monitoring, information on smoking, stimulus control, CO feedback, nicotine fading, and strategies to avoid withdrawal symptoms. End-of- treatment quit rates ranged from 36% (self-help manual) to 68% (10-session multicomponent program). At 12-month follow-up there were significant differences between groups, and the most effective group was the 5-session plus manual group, with an abstinence rate of 48%.
