Singer, Mathew Kyle. "Self powered wrist extension orthosis." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1154.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most devastating effects of tetraplegia is the inability to grasp and manipulate everyday objects necessary to living an independent life. Currently surgery is widely accepted as the solution to improve hand functionality. However, surgery becomes difficult when the user has paralysed wrists as is the case with C5 tetraplegia. The aim of this research was to develop a solution which provided controlled wrist flexion and extension which, when combined with surgery, achieves a 'key pinch' grip. This particular grip is critically important for people with C5 tetraplegia as it is used for countless grasping activities, necessary on a day-to-day basis. A systematic design process was used to evolve the solution to provide controlled wrist flexion and extension. Concept brainstorming identified four alternative solutions which were evaluated to find the preferred concept. The chosen solution was called the Self Powered Wrist Extension Orthosis, more commonly referred to as the 'orthosis'. This concept contained a shoulder harness which provided both energy and control to the wrist harness, which in turn changed the wrist position. The orthosis was developed with the use of a mathematical model which theoretically predicted the functional performance by comparing the required force needed to move the wrist harness to the achievable force supplied by the user's shoulders. Using these parameters, the orthosis was optimized using the matlab Nelder-Mead algorithm which adjusted the wrist harness geometries to maximize the functional performance. A prototype was constructed and tested with the help of two participants who when combined, achieved an average of 18.5° of wrist rotation. The theoretical model however predicted an average range of motion of 28.4°. The discrepancy found between the theoretical and experimental result can be contributed to incorrect assumptions in the theoretical model. This included unaccounted friction and inaccurate modeling of the orthosis dynamics. The feedback from potential users of the orthosis was enthusiastic and encouraging especially towards the simplicity, usability and practicality of the design.

Abstract:
Starting from pervasive computing paradigm, we want to face the new system's requirements, concerning, mainly, self-organisation, situatedness and adaptivity, through the definition and execution of nature-inspired patterns. They are extracted by the study of dynamics in biological systems and we consider for their implementation the biochemical tuple spaces model. In particular, the aim of the thesis is to design and realize a first biochemical extension of TuCSoN (technology based on tuple spaces model) and, then, to verify its capabilities by means of a proper case study, that deals with local self-organisation and competition of services in an open and highly-dynamic environment.

Müller, Miguel. "Self-healing Javascript Errors Caused by the Browser Extension Privacy Badger."

Abstract:
As today’s web is filled with privacy-invasive third-party trackers, users are turning to privacy extensions to prevent their browsing habits from leaking. However, research has shown that privacy extensions can decrease website quality and even break meaningful functionality. Our research addresses this problem by performing automated repairs on Javascript code that has been broken by Privacy Badger, a heuristics-based privacy extension. First, we study how the use of Privacy Badger affects the prevalence of Javascript errors on 11 665 urls. We find errors caused by Privacy Badger on 758 (6.5%) urls. We also observe a 74% increase in Javascript errors, and a 27% increase in urls affected by Javascript errors when browsing with Privacy Badger. Using this data, we investigate how BikiniProxy, an automated HTML and Javascript rewriting proxy consisting of five self-healing strategies, performs on errors caused by Privacy Badger. Out of 751 web pages with errors caused by Privacy Badger, 215 (29%) had at least one such error healed by BikiniProxy. Additionally, we recognize a shortcoming of BikiniProxy’s line skipper strategy, and propose an improvement to it. Repairing web pages using our modified version of BikiniProxy reduces the number of errors on 12.9% more urls. Finally, we show that repairing errors using BikiniProxy can restore functionality that has been broken by Privacy Badger. But we can only detect such cases in two urls out of the hundreds repaired, which shows that the repair approach suffers from overfitting in our context. Our most important insight is that privacy extensions can break functionality without blocking any resource that the functionality is dependent on, and that these are the cases where BikiniProxy can restore the functionality.

Murray, Brittany Michelle. "The Role and Impact of Cooperative Extension in Diabetes Self-Management Education." UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/foodsci_etds/32.

Full text
Abstract:
Diabetes is increasing globally and nationally. Diabetes complications and costs can be reduced through modification of lifestyle risks and diabetes self-management education (DSME). The Cooperative Extension System (CES) is uniquely positioned to implement DSME. This study assessed the role and impact of the Cooperative Extension System (CES) in DSME. A survey was sent to CES professionals throughout the U.S. a total of 43 participants provided information on 73 DSME programs. Most participants were from the South (n=22, 51.16%) and Midwest (n=12, 27.91%) and most programs targeted adults with and at risk for type 2 diabetes. Most programs were developed and taught by registered dietitians and family and consumer science agents and were focused on healthy eating and cooking techniques. Few programs addressed medications, mental and physical health, influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations. Implementation challenges were related to recruitment, attrition, and funding and most suggestions for the future of CES in DSME were related to funding. CES has a wide reach in terms of DSME with over 29 states. Future CES efforts should target children with type 2 diabetes and should form/continue partnerships with health care professionals.

Petty, Heather Keyronica. "Evaluation of Teen Cuisine: An Extension-Based Cooking Program to Increase Self-efficacy in Teens." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/73705.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Childhood, adolescent, and adult obesity is a major health and economic concern affecting the United States and various countries across the globe. Obese children and adolescents are at a potential risk for developing certain chronic diseases as they transition into adulthood. There are community-based cooking intervention programs designed to increase children and adolescents' intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, whether these programs improve self-efficacy and perceptions related to food and eating behaviors is not currently known. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Teen Cuisine, an Extension-based cooking program on self-efficacy with cooking and perceptions of their eating behaviors in a diverse group of adolescents across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Subjects: Students involved in the 4-H Teen Cuisine Program during the 2013-2015 academic years. Cooking Program: Teen Cuisine is a six-week 90-minute extension-based cooking program created by the Virginia Family Nutrition Program targeting adolescents and teens throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The program focused on kitchen safety and sanitation, knife skills, food preparation, and nutrition education. Measures: A survey was used to assess n=531 student's self-efficacy for general nutrition knowledge, food choices, and cooking skills as a result of the 4-H Teen Cuisine Program during the academic year of fall 2013 to spring 2015. Methods: Surveys were administered upon completion of the Teen Cuisine program to assess students' self-efficacy and perceived gains in kitchen skills, dietary patterns and preferences, and nutrition knowledge. Results: Teens that self-reported living in rural areas throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia perceived gains (p < 0.05) in an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables. Teens also indicated an increased frequency in cooking and a decrease in their consumption of soda/soft drinks. Conclusion: Overall Teen Cuisine was found to be effective in improving perceptions of curriculum specific health behaviors, cooking skills, food safety and sanitation, and perceived gains in self-efficacy in the kitchen.

Walasek, Lukasz. "What determines the value of possessions? : empirical tests of the self-extension theory of ownership." Thesis, University of Essex, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.654584.

Full text
Abstract:
Owners tend to overvalue possessions relative to non-owners: a phenomenon known as the endowment effect. Over the years, many theories have been put forward in order to account for this robust disparity between owners' willingness to accept (WT A) and non-owners' willingness to pay (WTP). One possible explanation of the endowment effect is that owners develop feelings of ownership towards their possession, growing emotionally attached to what they own. A potential unifying theoretical framework that can explain this relation is the self-extension model of psychological ownership formulated by Russell Belk (1988). Accordingly, objects are incorporated into one's self-definition in order to fulfill the basic psychological needs of having a coherent and continuous sense of identity, sense of belonging as well as feelings of efficacy and effectance. The processes by which objects are incorporated into our self include: object appropriation (touch and use), getting to know one's possession (familiarity and knowledge) and active investment of the self in the object (creation). All of these premises were tested experimentally across 9 studies, presented in Manuscripts 1, 2 and 3. Overall, modest evidence was accumulated in favor of the proposition that feelings of ownership develop in order to satisfy psychological needs outlined by the self-extension model. Also moderate support was found to suggest that touch, use and knowledge influence subjective valuations of owners and non-owners. Only the implications of object creation were in line with the predictions of the self-extension framework. In manuscript 4, two different explanations for the endowment effects for risky assets were investigated: misperception of probability and value-uncertainty. Results were inconsistent with the former but supported the latter, showing that even if the representation of an asset is the same between owners and non-owners, higher uncertainty about its value increases the magnitude of the endowment effect.

CAPES
The numerous possibilities for extension and construction of the self derived from other forms of consumption that don’t involve ownership are a reality arising from the Digital and Access Ages. Therein, it highlights the Collaborative Consumption, described as a practice where clients access a good with the help of technology in exchange for a small amount. The emphasis of this thesis focuses on the understanding of this extension/construction of the self in the Collaborative Consumption, represented here by the Bike PE project, first intercity system of bike sharing in Brazil. The aspects that motivated the choice of this subject are directly related to the lack of studies regarding the extent of identity in new consumption configurations. Thus, the constructs taken as the theoretical basis of this thesis were the self, Access and Digital Ages and Collaborative Consumption. This is a basic qualitative research that used to collect data the natural, direct and structured observation and the non-structured individual interview. The observations were effected in nine stations where bicycles are and the interviews were conducted with 24 users of Bike PE. The collected data were analyzed according to Semantics and Pragmatics Analysis of Conversation. The results showed that the extension of the self in bike-sharing practice occurs through the meaning of the use of good accessed. This use by the experience of pedaling strengthens and brings up the idea of citizenship, as well as providing a sense of belonging and connectivity also helping to build the self by acting as an instrument of ideological, social, economic, cultural and sustainable change for people. The idea of ownership, however, is not ruled out. Users want or even have a bicycle, leading to understanding that access and ownership can be consumed concurrently.

Nachit, Oussama. "Mieux comprendre l'EXPansion et l'EXTension de soi du consommateur : une application à un objet connecté." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université de Montpellier (2022-....), 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024UMOND008.

Full text
Abstract:
In a technologically advanced world where connected objects become a part of our personal identity, this thesis examines the relationships between individuals and their smartwatches through the prisms of self-EXPansion (Aron and Aron, 1986) and self-EXTension (Belk, 1988). This research highlights the complex and rich manner in which individuals integrate these devices into their self-concept, thus modulating their attachment and intention to continue using these technologies. Therefore, the central problem of this doctoral work is articulated as follows: "What are the relationships maintained by individuals with their smartwatch via self-EXPansion and self-EXTension, and the impact of these processes on the attachment and continued use of these watches?" This question led to a structured investigation around four specific research questions that seek to explore the manifestations of these psychological processes in the context of interactions with a smartwatch. This research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative analyses to detail the experiences of users with their smartwatches, followed by two quantitative studies to measure the impact of purchase motivations and watch attributes on self-EXPansion and self-EXTension. The methods used validated the hypothetical relationships between the theoretical constructs and user behaviors. The findings reveal that smartwatches are perceived not only as functional tools but also as essential elements of the users' identity. The results show that agentic purchase motivations and the attributes of the watch directly impact self-EXPansion, which in turn facilitates self-EXTension, leading to greater attachment and a reinforced intention to continue using the watch. These results underscore the sequentiality of the self-EXPansion and self-EXTension processes in the formation of attachment to connected objects. The implications of this research are significant for manufacturers of smartwatches, and the multiple theoretical contributions fit into the literature on self-EXPansion and self-EXTension.The thesis acknowledges the limitations related to the focus on smartwatches and suggests broadening the analysis to other wearable technologies to examine whether the findings generalize to other devices

Tian, Feng. "On commutativity of unbounded operators in Hilbert space." Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1095.

Full text
Abstract:
We study several unbounded operators with view to extending von Neumann's theory of deficiency indices for single Hermitian operators with dense domain in Hilbert space. If the operators are non-commuting, the problems are difficult, but special cases may be understood with the use representation theory. We will further study the partial derivative operators in the coordinate directions on the L2 space on various covering surfaces of the punctured plane. The operators are defined on the common dense domain of C∞ functions with compact support, and they separately are essentially selfadjoint, but the unique selfadjoint extensions will be non-commuting. This problem is of a geometric flavor, and we study an index formulation for its solution. The applications include the study of vector fields, the theory of Dirichlet problems for second order partial differential operators (PDOs), Sturm-Liouville problems, H.Weyl's limit-point/limit-circle theory, Schrödinger equations, and more.

Abstract:
This study addresses urban planning problems in the post-independence zones or townships of Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire. It serves as a demonstration project aiming at showing how local resources, labor and funds could be mobilized to help local people solve the problems affecting their communities. It supports the view that with little government support and/or international contribution, self-help projects could be initiated in Kinshasa city before they may be extended to the rest of the country. This particular pilot project is intended for the improvement of the Southern Extension District (S.E.D.).It covers an area about 5 Kilometers long and 2.5 Kms. wide, which comprises the entire zone of Bumbu, the eastern side of Makala, and the Northern side of Selembao zones. This site was selected for the various resources needed for the Self-Help Project. The major problems of this post-independence district are erosion/flooding, substandard houses, and lack of playgrounds for children. It is proposed that an organizational framework becreated, which will coordinate an ongoing process of improvement through self-help effort. Actions that the residents and the government need to undertake in order to create such a framework are suggested. Creation of an independent entity named "Office of Special Project", whose personnel will come from the Department of Planning and Urban Management (B.E.A.U.), Housing Department and Public Works department is also suggested. This office will serve as a sponsoring agency whose mission is to create a multipurpose co-operative at each zone or township level and to supervise the improvement process. Its staff will meet on a regular basis with the representatives of these co-operatives to discuss the problems of the community with the local people and provide them with the expertise needed to complete the project successfully.

Stimpson, Tara Spruce. "Physical Activity Stages of Change, Self-Efficacy, and Perceived Needs and Interests of Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agents and Clientele." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34650.

Full text
Abstract:
Extensive research has clearly revealed that people of all ages can enhance their health by simply incorporating moderate levels of physical activity into their daily routine. Physical activity significantly reduces the risk of morbidity and mortality from coronary heart disease while providing protective benefits from hypertension, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, and colon cancer. Physical activity can lead to positive psychological improvements by decreasing levels of anxiety and depression, and enhancing self-esteem. However, despite the tremendous physical and mental health benefits, 60% of American adults do not regularly engage in physical activity and 25% are completely inactive. Moreover, only 34 % of Virginians engage in regular physical activity. Immense progress has been made in terms of understanding physical activity behavior. Many techniques based on theoretical models have been developed for intervening with physical activity behaviors and designing of programs. The Transtheoretical model is considered one of the most promising approaches for enhancing physical activity behavior. This model integrates current behavioral status with a person's intention to change his/her behavior and suggests that individuals attempting to adopt a health behavior progress through five stages of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. The concepts of self-efficacy (degree of confidence) and decisional balance (perceived benefits and barriers) are often used in conjunction with the stages of change for physical activity interventions to help individuals progress through the five stages of change.

A survey was conducted among 243 Family and Consumer Sciences educators and clientele in Virginia's Cooperative Extension program. Attitudes, preferences, stages of change, perceived incentives and barriers, along with desired education channels and activities were analyzed to provide a basis for development of effective Extension publications and programs aimed to increase and improve levels of physical activity.

Results from this study indicate that almost half of the respondents are not regularly engaging in physical activity and 31% are not engaging in any activity. Data revealed significant relationships between the stages of exercise change with respondents' levels of confidence (p<.0001) and with decisional balance scores (p<.0001). Participants who lead sedentary lifestyles or participate occasionally in physical activity (precontemplation contemplation, and preparation stages) viewed the barriers of physical activity to surpass the benefits. Consequently, these participants had low confidence in their ability to participate in physical activity. On the other hand, participants who exercised on a regular basis (action and maintenance stages) perceive the benefits for physical activity to outweigh the barriers. Furthermore, these participants had high confidence in their ability to exercise in challenging situations. Results from this study also suggest that stage of exercise change may be related to an individual's educational level.

Regardless of age and gender, educational channels in which respondents selected to receive physical activity information were brochures and newsletters. In addition, activities in which respondents were most frequently engaging were walking and yard work. The activity that subjects selected as a means to increase physical activity levels was also walking.

The results from this study can help Extension agents and specialists develop appealing physical activity educational materials and programs that meet the needs of FCS clients. These programs may help FCS clients incorporate regular physical activity in their daily lives, moving closer to achieving the State's objective for increasing physical activity among Virginia adults and, thus, leading to improved quality of life.

This dissertation presents two distinct parts regarding scientific research. At the beginning performance indicators are identified and strategic environment is set up, using the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as a methodological tool, with a theoretical foundation in Kaplan and Norton (1997) and, in particular, Figueiredo (2002). Among the new adaptations it is highlighted the implementation of new perspectives: Organizational â strategic politics and management; Pedagogical â teaching, research and extension linking; Social Responsibility â university and society relationship and Scientific Production â scientific and technological publication and the definition of the strategic planning environment in the context of institutional self-assessment within the teaching, research and extension interface, through documental and camping research. In the second part, the university extension activities are assessed as an aim of third degree education, expressing your academic, political and social importance. The research was applied by sampling; teachers and students of third degree education from several professional areas, when the first institutional assessment happened in the school year of 2006, based on the guidelines of SINAES â Third Degree Education Assessment National System at Centro Federal de EducaÃÃo TecnolÃgica do CearÃ. The application of questionnaires to teachers and students (trainees, college program workers, volunteers), semi-structured interviews, research to the database on the extension actions between September of 2008 and February of 2009, among others, were the instruments used for this work, and mainly as a base, the analysis of strategic planning for the extension established in the institutional development plan for the period 2005/2009. Considered the four perspectives defined in the process of identification of strategically pointers, as objective generality of this work, the resulted ones evidence that the teaching and learning classroom clearly has unfamiliarity of the politician-pedagogical planning for the interface education, research and extension, although the efforts of the high administration of the searched institution; not obstante, the positive impact in the translation of the pupil and the effective is distinguished contribution for the social inclusion of the taken care of clientele, by means of the activities of extension; also, perceives the great teaching development in scientific publication and technological, whereas, the learning group little has participation in activities of scientific initiation. In the general context, one concludes that, these social actors - professors and students, have insignificant participation in the elaboration of politics and the strategically planning for the university extension, although, adequately affirmed in the plan of institutional development, as demonstrated in the results of the applied research.

Abstract:
Starting from the Riemann Mapping Theorem it arises the interest for biholomorphisms over domains in one or several complex variables. Poincar´e showed that there is no analytic isomorphism between the Polydisc and the unit ball already in C^2. The previous fact may suggest that biholomorphic domains are a class of such well-behaved sets that could extend some regularity of the biholomorpshism until their respective boundaries. A very influent approach was faced by Fefferman (published in the year 1974), by proving that every biholomorphism between bounded strongly pseudoconvex domains with smooth boundaries extends as a diffeomorphism to the closures of the domains. In this work is quoted a classical result that presents an isometry respect to the Bergman metric between biholomorphic domains and he noticed an interesting behaviour of geodesics when they are going to the boundary of a considered domain. The first part of this thesis mainly follows Abate’s work aiming to show the homeomorphic extension of a biholomorphism between C^2-smooth strongly pseudoconvex domains. The second part of this thesis mainly follows the work of Bracci, Gaussier and Zimmer aiming to show the homeomorphic extension of a Quasi-Isometric homeomorphisms to the End compactifications of the respective domains. Other consequences are related to extend the Denjoy-Wolff Theorem for domains in several complex variables and present the Denjoy-Wolff behaviour for commuting holomorphic selfmaps with no fixed point in the domain itself.

Abstract:
The Electric/Electronic architecture of vehicle becomes more complex and costly, self-adaption can reduce the system, enhance the adaptive meanwhile reduce energy consumption and costs. The self-adaption needs the cooperation of both hardware and software reconfigurations, such that after the software is reconfigured the automotive network continues to fulfill the time constraints for time-critical applications. The thesis focuses on the real-time network reconfiguration. It uses EAST-ADL to model a real-time automotive system with timing events and constraints, which conforms to AUTOSAR timing extensions. The network media access is analyzed based on the model and a scheduling algorithm is developed. Then the concept is implemented by a use case, which is transformed from an EAST-ADL model to an executable simulation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if completion of the Purdue Extension Professor Popcorn nutrition curriculum impacts third grade students' long-term knowledge about, attitude toward, and self-reported consumption of fruits and vegetables. A secondary purpose was to measure any carry-over of concepts learned, or to identify any food behaviors acquired, by surveying the students' parents.A total of 74 third-grade students and 66 parents/guardians participated in this study. Data was analyzed using SPSS, version 11.0. Descriptive analysis, frequency counts, and Pearson Chi Square were used to test 15 research hypotheses. Significant differences were found in students' attitude toward vegetables, how often they ate fruit, and how often people should eat fruits and vegetables. No differences were found in parent/guardian surveys. Results of this study provide modest support for the impact of Professor Popcorn on students. No carryover of concepts to the students' parents, however, was observed.

Pike, Stephen Mace. "A model of mind from the perspective of temporal structuralism." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Humanities, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4624.

Full text
Abstract:
Symmetry and symmetry-breaking have, in the last one hundred and fifty years, become incorporated as central explanatory concepts within the natural sciences and mathematics. An abbreviated review of the incorporation of symmetry within the disciplines of mathematics, physics, philosophy and biology, provides a frame within which to develop of a model of mind. This thesis combines the framework provided by symmetry and symmetry-breaking with a structural understanding of self-referential dynamics in examining the implied Kantian model of mind. It considers that Kant’s assumption of a transcendental self unnecessarily isolates consciousness from being understood as a product of complex natural processes. Kant’s structural model of mind is examined and reformulated in terms of a more fundamental form and process. The space required for any non-reductionist model of mind is proposed as being generated through an enfolding of dimensionality in the occurrence of categorical level symmetry breaking during evolutionary development. The temporally extended function is accounted for in terms of self-referential structural dynamics operating within the primary temporal asymmetry. The model of mind proposed is created through application of naturalistic explanations incorporating symmetry and has attributes that may prove of interest to non-reductionists. The phenomenological geometry established provides a framework to understand the experiential phenomenon of qualia while conforming to the requirements of a natural explanation. Information is conceived as being transmitted inwaveforms propagated across spaces of enfolded dimensionalities through structural framesdemarcating nested spaces and condensing in the synthesis of unity in the object of attention,or image, and returning to distribute, the now reformulated, information outward acrosscontextual frames and spaces. This simplified dynamic is considered to operate at all levels of natural phenomena and involves the reintroduction of Bohm’s concepts of implicate and explicate order. The result is a model of mind employing a minimum structural form and self-referential dynamics that has potential for integration across the discipline theoretic frames of the natural sciences while retaining, for the domain of conscious phenomena, an independent causal significance in terms of a temporal structuralism.

In this work we present the Aharonov-Bohm effect, as well as its implications. We also present the self-adjoint extension, an important tool in quantum mechanics. This work's main objective is to investigate the relation between the self-adjoint extension parameter and the Aharonov-Bohm system's parameters. Of particular interest is the relation between the self-adjoint extension parameter and the electron's anomalous magnetic dipole moment. This is done by comparison between two self-adjoint extension methods: Bulla-Gesztesy's and Kay-Studer's. We obtain the mathematical relation between the aforementioned quantities and conclude that the chosen methods are suitable to accomplish our goals.

Caba, Beth Lynn. "Solution and Adsorption Characterization of Novel Water-Soluble Ionic Block Copolymers for Stabilization of Magnetite Nanoparticles." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27614.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a need for multifunctional polymer-particle complexes for use in biomedical applications such as for drug delivery or as MRI contrast agents where composition and stability are essential for the complexes to function. This work outlines a general methodology for rationally designing complexes stabilized with polymer brush layers using adapted star polymer models for brush extension and pair potential. Block copolymer micelles were first utilized for experimental validation by using the brush extension model to predict the size and the interaction model to predict the second virial coefficient, A2. Subsequently, the models were used to predict the size and colloidal stability of magnetite-polymer complexes using the modified Deryaguin-Verwey-Landau-Overbeek theory. Novel hydrophilic triblock copolymers comprised of poly(ethylene oxide) tailblocks and a carboxylic acid containing polyurethane center block were examined by static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and densiometry. Under conditions when the charge is suppressed such as at low pH and/or high ionic strength, the polymer chains self-assemble into micelles, whereas unimers alone are present under conditions where charge effects are important, such as high pH and low ionic strength. A model for effective interaction between star polymers was used to obtain an expression for the second virial coefficient (A2) for micelles in solution. The values of A2 obtained using this method were compared with experimentally determined values for star polymers and micelles. In doing so, not only was a new means of calculating A2 a priori introduced, but the applicability of star polymer expressions to micellar systems was established. Through the analogy of micelles to sterically stabilized nanoparticles, this model was applied to water-soluble block copolymers adsorbed on magnetite nanoparticles for the purpose of tailoring a steric stabilizing brush layer. The sizes of the magnetite-polymer complexes were predicted using the star polymer model employed for the micelle study with an added layer to account for the anchor block. Colloidal stability was predicted from extended DLVO theory using the pair interaction. This work will lead to a better understanding of how to design ion-containing block copolymers for steric stabilization of metal oxide nanoparticles.

attitudes towards their professional development, their perceptions of major professional development activities, and the factors that hinder change and growth in teachers were investigated. The data collection instrument used was a questionnaire administered to 110 English language teachers at BaSkent University. The questionnaire consisted of both open-ended and close-ended items and the data collected were analyzed descriptively to understand the general trends and differences among teachers. The data analysis revealed that the teachers agreed with most of the concepts that reflect the importance of professional development. In addition, they were aware of the importance of major professional development activities for their growth. However, peer observation and action research, which are developmental activities, were not favoured as much as the other activities. In addition, it was found that the teachers did not make use of the activities as much as they gave importance to. Furthermore, teachers showed significant differences in importance given to and making use of the activities by the background variables. Female teachers, young teachers and the teachers who do not have much experience seemed to give more importance to and actualize some of the professional development activities more than the other teachers. Meanwhile, it was also noted that the listed factors that hinder growth were all found important by the teachers. The most important impediments to growth were indicated as excessive workload, lack of self-motivation and lack of institutional support for professional development.

Abstract:
The purpose of the current research was to integrate multiple theories of stress appraisals and to empirically test two separate transactional cognitive-appraisal models. It was predicted that the core self-evaluation personality characteristics and motivation orientation would moderate the relationship between challenge and hindrance stressors and coping style. Furthermore, it was predicted that coping would buffer the adverse effects of stress on domain performance and satisfaction. A series of multiple regression analyses were conducted to investigate the predicted moderators. Results suggest that core self-evaluations moderate the relationship between challenge stress and problem-focused coping as predicted in the challenge model but not for the hindrance stress model. Coping style did not significantly buffer the negative effects of stress on performance or satisfaction. Overall, the results provide partial support for the challenge-hindrance framework within the transactional appraisal model of stress.

Abstract:
The most commonly cited reason for dropping-out of a college program is financial issues (Johnson, Rochkind, Ott, & DuPont, 2009). While some financial issues may be related to access to financial resources, others may be related to how college students respond to financial stress. Boss’ (2002) model of family stress (Figure 1) noted the ability to cope with a crisis is influenced by available resources and perception of an event. This framework suggests the amount of financial distress perceived by young adults is influenced by available resources (e.g., parental support or financial knowledge), and internal (psychological) factors, such as self-esteem and locus of control (Boss, 2002). It is hypothesized that perceived financial well-being (perceived outlook of their financial situation), the level of control students have (e.g., locus of control) and how they perceive themselves (e.g., self-esteem) will influence perceived financial distress (ability to manage finances and education), above and beyond, and financial knowledge. To conduct the analysis, a convenience sample of 612 undergraduate college students from a Southeastern University were surveyed to determine whether their financial knowledge (i.e. credit and debit, savings, taxes, and insurance knowledge), perceived financial well-being, self-esteem and locus of control had an effect on financial distress. The results of a multiple linear regression revealed respondents’ well-being (β = .61, p < .01) and locus of control (β = .18, p < .01) are significant indicators of financial distress among college students. Specifically, for every one point increase in financial well-being, financial stress decreases by .69 points (b = -0.69, p < .01) and for every one point increase in locus of control (suggesting an increase in external locus of control), financial stress increases by .21 points (b = 0.21, p < .01). Furthermore, financial knowledge and self-esteem was not significantly related to financial stress among college students (β = -0.04, p = .11, and β = -0.10, p = .02 respectively). As such, college student’s financial distress is lower when students possess a positive outlook on their financial well-being, have an internal locus of control, and have high self-esteem. Financial knowledge had less influence on financial distress, but this finding may be a product of the level of financial knowledge among college students.

The project examines the possibilities to develop a local and sustainable model for food production in Uppsala with focus on diet, farming methods and different types of greenhouse installations. With the simulation software VIP energy 3.1.1 the energy balance and temperature development of greenhouses of different materials were calculated for different operating cases. The results were also compared when the greenhouse was installed stand-alone or integrated to the wall of a small standard or passive house. With a starch based diet and biological farming methods research suggests it is possible to produce food efficiently without compromising the environment or our health. The yearly food needs for a family of four that follows the suggested diet was estimated to 4362 kg and the outdoor land required to produce it was calculated to 4676 m2 through organic yield statistics. The area could however be reduced to 2813 m2 if the only starch staple in production was potatoes. The tender growing season in a greenhouse constructed with a covering of 5 mm glass or 5-16Ar-5 mm was calculated to 85 and 148 days respectively. The energy use required for year round production of mushrooms in the respective greenhouses was calculated to 53 or 16 kWh/m2,year. Half hardy plants required 399 or 173 kWh/m2,year and tender plants 953 or 358 kWh/m2,year. When the greenhouses were connected to the wall of a small house the heating demand could be reduced by up to 22 % depending on the operating case.

During the last decade, the advent of Ontologies used for biomedical annotation has had a deep impact on life science. MeSH is a well-known Ontology for the purpose of indexing journal articles in PubMed, improving literature searching on multi-domain topics. Since the explosion of data growth in recent years, there are new terms, concepts that weed through the old and bring forth the new. Automatically extending sets of existing terms will enable bio-curators to systematically improve text-based ontologies level by level. However, most of the related techniques which apply symbolic patterns based on a literature corpus tend to focus on more general but not specific parts of the ontology. Therefore, in this work, we present a novel method for utilizing genealogical information from Ontology itself to find suitable siblings for ontology extension. Based on the breadth and depth dimensions, the sibling generation stage and pruning strategy are proposed in our approach. As a result, on the average, the precision of the genealogical-based method achieved 0.5, with the best 0.83 performance of category “Organisms”. We also achieve average precision 0.69 of 229 new terms in MeSH 2013 version. Furthermore, we found that there is an opportunity for extending Ontology by multiple domains, with employing the knowledge from Ontologies of different domains.

Self-construal classifies individuals into two categories: independent and interdependent. Previous research pointed out that self-construal may be a possible antecedent of regulatory focus: the independent may be more consistent with a promotion focus, while the interdependent may be more consistent with a prevention focus. Also, past research identified that regulatory focus moderates the impacts of brand extension evaluations: promotion-focused consumers favor benefit overlap extensions, when prevention-focus consumers favor category similarity extensions. Therefore, this research explores how self-construal may also moderates the relative impacts of benefit overlap (i.e., the consistency of core benefits provided by extensions) versus product category similarity (i.e., the similarity among product categories that include the extensions) on brand extension evaluations.

Facing the escalating costs, more and more firms are using product extensions strategies. The purpose of directed at examining the key factors associated with their effects. After reviewing the relevant literatures, self-concept (high or low), ownership status of consumers (owner or non-owner) and product-line extension strategy, including the stretch direction (up or down) and branding strategy (sub-brand name or direct), are proposed to be the most important ones. A factorial design is used to investigate the hypotheses. The major conclusions are: 1.The higher the attachment with the brand, the better the consumers'''' evaluation toward the parent brand 2.The owners generally possess significant better evaluation toward the parent brand than the non-owners. 3.The effects of attachment on evaluation toward the parent brand are higher as compared with the effects of ownership status. 4.Given the high attachment, “ownership effect” exists when the firms adopt upward product extension and “ownership effect” doesn’t exist when the firms implement the downward product extension. 5.Given the low attachment, the line extension evaluations of owners are not significantly different from nonowners’ when the firms adopt either upward or downward product extensions. 6.Branding strategy of line extension doesn’t influence the consumers’ parent brand evaluatio

Prior studies mostly focus on the direct relationships among service quality, brand image and brand identity on intention to purchase extension brand without considering the influences of overall brand fit. Accordingly, to close this gap, this study empirically tests how service quality, brand image and brand identity as antecedent variables to affect intention to purchase extension brand, while viewing overall brand fit as a mediating variable. Moreover, this study also investigates how self-monitoring and brand tie strength act as moderating variables to influence the above relations. Our empirical results suggest that:(1) overall brand fit has a positive effect on intention to purchase extension brand;(2) service quality, brand image and identity have positive effect on the overall brand fit;(3) overall brand fit has a partial mediation effect on the relationships between service quality, brand image, brand identity on intention to purchase extension brand;(4) the effect of overall brand fit on the intention to purchase extension brand is strengthen by high brand tie strength;(5) the relations of service quality, brand image and identity on overall brand fit are strengthen by high brand tie strength. These findings provide significant theoretical contributions and managerial implications.

This study was designed to examine effects of motor performance and learning, based on performance-based feedback schedules. In experiment 1, by extending the findings of self-controlled feedback, feedback was provided while learners made wrong judgment of error direction in a non-self-controlled condition, which examined the effect of motor learning. Experiment 2 examined the effects of motor performance and learning by adding bandwidth feedback in self-controlled context. Both of two experiments of the present study recruited twenty-four adults as participants respectively (Experiment 1: 16 males, 8 females, mean age: 24.6 ± 2.2 yrs.; Experiment 2: 18 males, 6 females, mean age: 23.7 ± 1.9 yrs.). The two experiments adopted a force control puck-shuffling movement as experimental task. The results revealed that providing feedback for trials that learners made wrong judgment of error direction did not result in the effects of motor performance and learning in a non-self-controlled feedback condition. Combining bandwidth feedback in self-controlled condition resulted in motor learning benefits in stability. The actual motor performance and subjectively estimated motor performance of trials that learners could not correctly judge the direction of error was more accurate than the trials that learners made judgment correctly; The motor performance of trials that learners requested feedback was more accurate than the ones that they did not request in self-controlled condition. Learners might adopted self-regulated learning strategies to cope the constraints they suffered in learning process. By comparing the subjective error and objective error of motor performance, the results indicated that learners tended to over-estimated their performance.

This study examined the effects of oral communication strategy (OCS) teaching on college students’ English learning performance (i.e., oral proficiency) and self-efficacy in an extension program. Participants were 46 students from two intact classes who took a 12-week English as a Foreign Language (EFL) course based on a communicative approach. The experimental group (n1 = 24) received explicit training of OCS use, whereas the control group (n2 = 22) took only regular communicative course without OCS training. The effects of the training on students’ learning performance and self-efficacy were assessed by pre- and post-experiment communication tests and a self-efficacy scale. The study used paired-sample t test and descriptive statistics to examine the pre- and post scores from oral communication tasks and the self-efficacy scale between the two groups. The results indicate that the experimental group significantly improved their learning performance after the treatment, but the control group had no significant improvement in their learning performance. The results also show that experimental group displayed higher self-efficacy after the OCS training than before the training.

Merz, Michael A. "Affect transfer from multiple product categories : The case of comparative brand extension advertising and the moderating role of self-construal." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/20650.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2008.
Companies are increasingly extending their brands into related or distant product categories to capitalize on their existing brand equity (called similar and dissimilar brand extensions, respectively). While prior research has extensively examined antecedent and moderating variables of brand extension success, only very limited research has investigated communication strategies that help promote brand extensions effectively. Moreover, the few existing studies focused on an advertising format where no comparison is made between the advertised brand extension and a competing brand (called noncomparative advertising). Surprisingly, no research to date has examined how an advertising format where a newly introduced brand extension is compared to a competing brand (called comparative advertising) affects consumers' brand extension evaluations.
Overall, the findings of this dissertation uncovered a hitherto unidentified means of improving a brand's equity and suggest that the greater cognitive flexibility of interdependent versus independent selves does not constitute a processing advantage per se. The results hold significant implications for national and international marketing managers.
The primarily objective of this dissertation is to close this gap in the existing marketing literature by integrating, for the first time, the brand extension and the comparative advertising research streams. Specifically, this dissertation aims to examine how consumers categorize and evaluate similar versus dissimilar brand extensions when promoted in a comparative versus noncomparative advertising format and whether self-construal differences exist across these conditions.
To examine these research questions, a series of three studies were conducted. The results of Study 1 indicated that consumers evaluate similar (dissimilar) brand extensions similarly (significantly more favorably) when promoted in a comparative versus noncomparative ad format. Further analyses revealed that consumers' dissimilar brand extension evaluations in the comparative ad format condition were driven by an affect transfer from the comparison brand to the dissimilar brand extension. The results of Studies 2 and 3 provided further evidence for the affect transfer notion by introducing conditions in which the parent and comparison brands were either known or unknown. Moreover, Studies 2 and 3 revealed for certain conditions that self-construal constitutes an important moderator of consumers' evaluation of dissimilar brand extensions.

Kim, Suah. "An Extension of Objectification Theory: Examining the Roles of Racial and Cultural Factors on Self-Objectification and Depression Among Asian American Women." Thesis, 2014. https://doi.org/10.7916/D80R9MQW.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectification theory proposed the idea that U.S. culture positions women to be viewed as physical entities foremost, typically to the fulfillment of men's sexual desires. The most damaging aspect of this experience is women's internalization of this perspective into their own sense of self, which has been shown to predict body image issues, eating disturbances, depression, sexual dysfunction, reduced psychological flow, and substance abuse. More recently, there have been efforts to examine how multiple layers of oppression may impact the experiences of sexual objectification and its psychological consequences. This study tested an extension of objectification theory on a sample of 618 Asian American women with the inclusion of race-related experiences, Asian American cultural values, and their relationships with the self-objectification process and depression. Findings indicate that the more participants endorsed Asian American cultural values, the more they engaged in a self-objectification process that involved internalizing mainstream ideals of beauty, monitoring their body appearance, and feeling shame and less satisfaction with race-related features and their bodies in general, which then predicted depression. In considering participants' adherence to Asian cultural values, the internalization of mainstream body ideals was necessary to engaging in self-objectification. Similarly, the more participants endorsed experiencing racial and sexual objectification, the more they engaged in the self-objectification process, which predicted depression. However, internalization of mainstream body ideals was not a necessary link between experiencing objectifying events and engaging in other components of the self-objectification process. Furthermore, adherence to Asian American cultural values did not have a significant moderation effect on the self-objectification process as predicted.

Abstract:
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Information Management, specialization in Marketing Intelligence
This study intents to explore attitudes of Portuguese consumers who engage with brands on Instagram in Portugal by following them. Throughout the self-expressiveness capacity of brands that can empower both inner and social selves from consumers, our goal is to explore the relationship between “following” a self-expressive brand on Instagram and relate it with brand outcomes as brand love, brand acceptance and WOM (word-of-mouth). The current study is an extension of the original study done by Wallace, Buil and Chernatony (2014) in Ireland applied to a different social network – Facebook. The data used in this research work was collected from an online questionnaire conducted to 132 Instagram’s users who declared to follow a brand in the same social network. The data was analyzed using structural equations modelling (PLS-SEM). Self-expressive brands that are followed on Instagram revealed to pursuit a very important impact in brand love. Furthermore, the present study also revealed a positive relationship between loved brands not only with WOM but also with brand acceptance among consumers who engage with a brand on Instagram in Portugal. In opposition, the current study shows that there is no relationship between self-expressive brands followed on Instagram and brand acceptance or WOM. Consumers who are highly engaged with a brand can offer great word-of-mouth, therefore, playing an important role as brand advocates of the brand. Additionally, loved brands can count with loyalty from consumers who are very likely to accept brand’s mistakes or testing new products.
