Abstract:
Adaption-innovation is a construct of preferred problem-solving style; adaptors work best within clear guidelines and prefer to “do things better”, whereas innovators bridle at structure and prefer to “do things differently”. Adaption-innovation bears considerable putative similarity to self-monitoring and self-consciousness. In this study the relationships among these constructs were explored using the responses of 55 undergraduate students (48 females, 7 males) on the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory (KAI; Kirton, 1976), the Self- Monitoring Scale (Snyder & Gangestad, 1986) and the Self-Consciousness Scale (Fenigstein, Scheier, & Buss, 1975). Higher adaption-innovation scores were significantly and positively associated with higher self-monitoring scores and significantly and negatively associated with social anxiety scores. In addition, multiple regression analyses indicated that the facets of self-consciousness as well as self-monitoring significantly predicted adaption-innovation. The implications of examining cognitive style in relation to interpersonal attributes are discussed.

Abstract:
Aiming at solving the problem that the existing restoring strand operation mechanism cannot realize self-adaption to the variation of position and shape of transmission lines, a method for self-adaptive mechanism design is introduced and summarized to meliorate the mechanism. This method is effective and practical, which can be applied to most common mechanism design: first of all, analyze the structural features of the self-adaptive mechanism; secondly, establish a universal method to determine the structure type named as initial kinematic chain which contains information of the degree of freedom (DOF), the number of links and the kinematic relations between every two of them; finally, considering the features of the existing mechanism, apply the self-adaption design to realize the required mechanism by inverting the initial kinematic chain, and build models and simulations to prove that the improved mechanism does have the ability of self-adaption to the location and shape variation of transmission lines.

Abstract:
Optimizing the volute performance can effectively improve the efficiency of a centrifugal fan by changing the volute geometric parameter, so the self-adaption Kriging surrogate model is used to optimize the volute geometric parameter. Firstly, volute radius Rd, the radius of tongue r, and outlet angle of the volute θ are selected as the optimization parameters of the volute, and latin hypercube sampling is used to configure the initial sample points, the corresponding three-dimensional aerodynamic model under each sample point configuration is constructed. CFD software is used to simulate the aerodynamic efficiency and total pressure of the centrifugal fan under each initial sample point configuration. Secondly, the Kriging surrogate model of initial sample point configuration parameters, aerodynamic efficiency, and total pressure of volute is constructed, and sample points are added by expectation improvement (EI) method to improve the fitting accuracy of Kriging surrogate model. Finally, the high-precision Kriging surrogate model is used as the fitness function of NSGA-II algorithm to find the Pareto optimal solution under multiobjective optimization, and the optimization target are aero dynamical efficiency and total pressure. The rationality of the above method is verified by optimizing the 9–19.4A type centrifugal fan volute. The efficiency of the optimized fan under working conditions is increased by 1%, and the total pressure under working conditions is not reduced. The optimized volute can effectively improve the overall performance of the centrifugal fan. This study is helpful to promote the application of numerical optimization design method in the volute of centrifugal fan. It provides reference for the optimization design of high-performance centrifugal fan.

Abstract:
Dissolved oxygen sensor is the key of dissolved oxygen measurement and it is usually implemented by electrochemical method, which measures dissolved oxygen content by the diffusion rate of molecular oxygen through film. However, the film on the electrochemical sensor probe is most likely to be blocked up by the waterborne contaminant, which may reduce the service life of the sensor and the indirect influence on the sensor’s current. This is caused by changes of water temperature, which may lead to the decline in the accuracy of the sensor’s output. This paper suggests a new method to implement the intelligent dissolved oxygen sensor. Our method mainly aims at ultrasonic automatic cleaning, automatic adjustment, and adaptation for the changes of temperature, which can not only regularly clean the dissolved oxygen sensor probe but also automatically calibrate the instruments based on the changes of temperature by combining software and hardware. The experiments show that the ultrasonic cleaning technology can not only increase the service life of the sensor by cleaning the film on the probe safely and effectively but also improve the accuracy of the sensor’s output. Our method also has the advantages of simple structure, high accuracy of measurement, long service life, convenience, and stability, which is suitable for application and popularization.

Abstract:
This study examines correlations among scores on the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory, the Tiffany Control Scales, and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for 104 undergraduates enrolled in the general psychology classes at a middle-sized midwestern university. Analysis indicated that adaptors and innovators perceive control from and/or over some aspects of their lives differently. Innovators feel control over internal (self) and over external (environment) while adaptors feel control from internal (self) and from external (environment). These results suggest innovators generally feel that they are in control of both themselves and the environment. Adaptors, however, generally feel they are controlled by internal drives and impulses or environmental events. The present study yielded no correlation between choice of college major and adaption-innovation but more research is needed. A relation between adaption and state anxiety was found, which may suggest adaptors feel more pressure when completing a novel task (answering questionnaires) than innovators. Finally, no significant correlation was found between the Kirton scores and trait anxiety.

Abstract:
Inspired by the mechanism of behaviour control of organisms, this paper attempts to build an underlying model of their physical and psychological activities in a dynamic environment with the purpose to achieve the self-adaption of robot behaviour in a complex, changeable environment. It designs an internal environment and emotion- & motive-generating models based upon the endocrine regulation mechanism (ERM). The robot relies upon the dynamic stability of the internal environment to accomplish its self-adaption to the external environment. The emotion-generating model is applied to in vivo and in vitro contingencies of various kinds; by releasing hormones, the emotion generated influences the robot’s in vivo and in vitro perception, and then its behavioural choice. The motive-generating model is employed to maintain the relative stability of the internal environment, and the motive generated leads to the corresponding behavioural choice directly. The experimental results prove the effectiveness of this ERM-based self-adaptive robot model.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to present an underwater climbing robot for wiping off marine life from steel pipes (e.g. jackets of oil platforms). The self-adaption mechanism that consists of a passive roll joint and combined magnet adhesion units provides the robot with better mobility and stability. Design/methodology/approach Adhesion requirements are achieved by analyses of falling and slipping. The movement status on pipes is analyzed to design the passive roll joint. The optimized structure parameters of the combined magnet adhesion unit are achieved by simulations. An approximation method is established to simplify the simulations conditions, and the simulations are conducted in two steps to save time effectively. Findings The self-adaption mechanism has expected performance that the robot can travel on pipes in different directions with high mobility. Meanwhile, the robot can clean continuous region of underwater pipes’ surface of offshore platforms. Practical implications The proposed underwater robot is needed by offshore oil platforms as their jackets require to be cleaned periodically. Compared with traditional maintenance by divers, it is more efficient, economic and safety. Originality/value Due to the specific self-adaption mechanism, the robot has good mobility and stability in any directions on pipes with different diameters. The good performance of striping attachments from pipes makes the underwater robot be a novel solution to clean steel pipes.

DSP-based intelligent split-phase self-adaption reactive power compensation controller was designed to real-time monitor the dynamic reactive power compensation of power grid parameters. The controller uses the capture unit and A/D conversion unit of DSP chip to respectively complete the power grid frequency measurement and power grid signal sampling, which simplifies the hardware architecture of the system, adopts split-phase dynamic reactive power compensation technology, and guarantees the realization of reactive power compensation via compensation capacitor switching when the three-phase load is unbalanced. The operation results showed that this controller could real-time monitor the parameters of power grid, accurately and rapidly switch the capacitor set with no impact according to the operation status of power grid, making the power factor of load stay within the reasonable range, improving the supply power quality.

Abstract:
Autapse connection is considered on a biological neuron coupled by astrocyte, and the effect of autapse driving-induced response in electrical activities is investigated. In this paper, a simple network is developed on the Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) neuron coupled by astrocyte and the autapse effect is also considered. The modulation of autapse connected to HH neuron can change the membrane potential by applying time-delayed feedback along a close loop. It is found that the self-adaption of autapse driving can make the network of neuron-astrocyte generate different modes of electrical activities, and oscillating behavior of Ca2+and IP3setting is controlled. This new network model can give potential understanding about self-adaption of neuron to external forcing when the coupling of astrocyte and autapse is considered.

Abstract:
The paper presents an analog circuit solution for implementing models of synapses with short-term adaption, derives an analytical solution (Floating gate charge as weights) for spiking input signals, and presents simulation results using a 45nm CMOS process using floating gate technology. The circuit is suitable for integration in large arrays of integrate-and-fire neurons and thus, can be used for evaluating computational roles of short-term adaption at the network level. Proposed floating gate p channel MOSFET (FGPMOS) can self-adapt, learn and store data with help of external voltages highly precise non-volatile and stable programming of weights (training) after fabrication of circuit have been performed. On application of feedback in the circuit, short-term self-adaption with spiking input signal has been observed. The model can also demonstrate homeostatic intrinsic plasticity, spike-based algorithms, and LMS algorithms. The model has a 4.5µV/℃ temperature coefficient, 0.675µW power consumption, and consumes a chip area of about 130×90 nm2. The model is compact, low power, and stable. The proposed circuit has been applied to design a cell membrane (bio-sensor CMOS-based circuit) depicting the effect of Sodium (NA) and Potassium (K) on synaptic action. With the help of the Na and K feedback circuit, effects of polarization and depolarization on synapse output have been demonstrated and thus depict spike-timing-dependent plasticity. Abstract:
AbstractStroke is one of the most frequent diseases among the elderly and often leads to an ongoing failure of functions in the central nervous system. Due to the plasticity of the brain affected may regain lost motor function by repetitive training. Robotic devices can be an approach to accelerate the rehabilitation process by maximizing patients’ training intensity. End-effector based robotic systems are particularly suitable for this purpose and often an advantage over exoskeletons since the proximal part of the upper limb remains under the control of the patient. Furthermore, the integration of the assistas- needed principle (AAN) into these devices enables individualized, adaptable robotic support to patients during therapy. In this study an end-effector based robotic rehabilitation device based on the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework is introduced. The system allows patients to perform 3- dimensional movements without a therapist’s assistance. With regard to the AAN, focus was based on impedance control and an additional real-time adaption of the impedance control parameters by using a feedback loop. 10 healthy subjects took part in this study to evaluate the overall concept with regard to usability and quality of the supported movement. Hence, the three most promising adaption models of AAN (without adaption, adaption according to position and time, adaption according to velocity) under three different levels of movement support (0%, 50%, 100%) were investigated by administering a self-designed questionnaire and the robot kinematics. The results showed no significant differences between the three different adaption models of AAN. However, the subjective assessment of the movements was in keeping with robot kinematics and the control approaches as well as the overall system have experienced remarkable support.

Abstract:
In this paper, we investigate the generalization problem of person re-identification (re-id), whose major challenge is the distribution shift on an unseen domain. As an important tool of regularizing the distribution, batch normalization (BN) has been widely used in existing methods. However, they neglect that BN is severely biased to the training domain and inevitably suffers the performance drop if directly generalized without being updated. To tackle this issue, we propose Batch Norm Test-time Adaption (BNTA), a novel re-id framework that applies the self-supervised strategy to update BN parameters adaptively. Specifically, BNTA quickly explores the domain-aware information within unlabeled target data before inference, and accordingly modulates the feature distribution normalized by BN to adapt to the target domain. This is accomplished by two designed self-supervised auxiliary tasks, namely part positioning and part nearest neighbor matching, which help the model mine the domain-aware information with respect to the structure and identity of body parts, respectively. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we conduct extensive experiments on three re-id datasets and confirm the superior performance to the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory total scores and self-estimates of the inventory scores to assess how accurately individuals can predict their adaptor or innovator status. Analysis indicated that 42 of 66 students (26 men, 40 women) classified themselves correctly as either adaptors or innovators, which was significant as were the Pearson correlations between actual and self-estimates of total scores (.52) and also actual scores and self-ratings on a five-point scale (.54). These data indicate many individuals can recognize the adaptive-innovative continuum with reasonable accuracy.

The Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory (KAI) was evaluated for its factorial composition, internal consistency, and relationship with self-esteem compared with previous studies. Data was from a random sample of adults ( n = 214) in a southern city. Results of the factor analysis revealed the scale to have high factorial stability across populations. The scale was found to be highly internally consistent, and a positive correlation with the Rosenberg Self-esteem scale was successfully replicated. These findings provide evidence for the construct validity of the scale.

Abstract:
In recent years, the individualized demand of customers brings small batches and diversification of orders towards enterprises. The application of enabling technologies in the factory, such as the industrial Internet of things (IIoT) and cloud manufacturing (CMfg), enhances the ability of customer requirement automatic elicitation and the manufacturing process control. The job shop scheduling problem with a random job arrival time dramatically increases the difficulty in process management. Thus, how to collaboratively schedule the production and logistics resources in the shop floor is very challenging, and it has a fundamental and practical significance of achieving the competitiveness for an enterprise. To address this issue, the real-time model of production and logistics resources is built firstly. Then, the task entropy model is built based on the task information. Finally, the real-time self-adaption collaboration of production and logistics resources is realized. The proposed algorithm is carried out based on a practical case to evaluate its effectiveness. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms three existing algorithms.
