Abstract:
Julie/Julia stands out in several ways. What had begun, in 2002/2003, as a highly popular blog, in which New Yorker Julie Powell tracks her experience of cooking all the recipes in Julia Child’s classic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cookery, became one of the first notable, commercially successful "blooks"—a neologism that denotes blogs adapted into books. As a visible sign of this achievement, The Ju-lie/Julia Project was awarded with the inaugural “Blooker Prize” in 2006. A few years later, Julie/Julia again pioneered in being the first blog (or blook, for that matter) to be adapted into a Hollywood movie, Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. In the following, I want to discuss Julie/Julia, and its adaptations from blog to book to film, as an instructive case study of life writing in the digital age.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most often neurodegenerative disease and proportionally growing with people aging. PD is a disease with motor and nonmotor clinical features. Levodopa and dopaminergic agonists (DA) are used for PD treatment, allowing an exquisite control of the motor symptoms during the first years. However, in five years, half patients will present motor or non-motor complications induced by cronic use of these medications. Neuropsychiatric symptoms are often, for example, depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, psychotic symptoms and impulse control disorders (ICD). The ICD is characterized by failure on resisting an impulse or on performing an specific act. Identification of the PD affected patients is crucial for proper management and study of this condition. There is an already validated self-reported questionnaire for this purpose, the Parkinson's Disease Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders Questionnaire (QUIP), without equivalent in portuguese language. Objective: To translate and to validate the Portuguese short version of the gold-standard questionnaire for identifying ICDs PD affected patients, applicable at the current moment of PD Methods: QUIP-CS was first translated to Portuguese by a professional translator. This translated version was shown to 5 PD neurologist specialists. in Brazil, being suggested minor modifications on it. This new Portuguese revised version was back translated to English by two independent native English speakers. They were both asked to compare the version one another and checked for differences. Then, they contacted each other and got a final back translated version. This one was sent for the original author, that approved its new version comparing to his original and validated one, with no loss of it’s original properties. The Portuguese corrected version was applied to 65 patients in a random way at PD’s ambulatory at HCPA. From these, 30 were asked to answer a number that would represent their level of QUIP-CS questions’ comprehension. Results: In a 1 to 5 point scale, being 1 no comprehension and 5, total comprehension, the average was 4,06 +/- 0,69 DP. Conclusion: Our results on Portuguese version of QUIP-CS show that QUIP-CS translated and corrected version was easily understood and easily self-applied. The article is under revision to be submitted for publication.

Abstract:
There are decades of research suggesting that drivers can compensate for distraction through behavioural adaptations such as selecting lower driving speeds, increasing road environment monitoring, decreasing lane changes, and avoiding overtaking. This research has confirmed the value of a new model for behavioural adaptation in distracted driving in explaining these phenomena. As such, the objective of this research was to characterize and evaluate the behavioural adaptation of mobile phone distracted drivers. A wide range of findings were generated, e.g. that behavioural adaptations are initiated by drivers and are not a de facto consequence of mobile phone use.

Abstract:
The vehicles of tomorrow will be more sophisticated, intelligent and safe than the vehicles of today. The future is leaning towards fully autonomous vehicles. This degree project provides a data driven solution for a speed adaptation system that can be used to compute a vehicle speed for curves, suitable for the underlying driving style of the driver, road properties and weather conditions. A speed adaptation system for curves aims to compute a vehicle speed suitable for curves that can be used in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) or in Autonomous Driving (AD) applications. This degree project was carried out at Volvo Car Corporation. Literature in the field of speed adaptation systems and factors affecting the vehicle speed in curves was reviewed. Naturalistic driving data was both collected by driving and extracted from Volvo's data base and further processed. A novel speed adaptation system for curves was invented, implemented and evaluated. This speed adaptation system is able to compute a vehicle speed suitable for the underlying driving style of the driver, road properties and weather conditions. Two different artificial neural networks and two mathematical models were used to compute the desired vehicle speed in curves. These methods were compared and evaluated.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-expansion and break-up adaption and to explore the relationship between individual and relation expansion and break-up adaption in Taiwan, a relation-oriented society. Yang and Lu (2004)suggested that Taiwanese may have individual-oriented traits and relation-oriented traits simultaneously. The author argues that the relational self may cause individuals develop not only individual expansion but also relation expansion during intimate relationship. When they break up, they may suffer from losing both individual and relation oriented expansion. This article investigates whether the relationship between individual and relation oriented expansion affect break-up adaption? The moderating roles of individual and relation oriented self-concept between expansion and break-up adaption were also examined. This study is cross-section study and the effective numbers of convenience sampling is 276. Result showed that both individual and friend relation expansion were related to break-up adaption. Relation oriented self also served as moderator between relation-oriented self expansion and break-up adaption.

The purpose of this thesis is to realize an under-actuated artificial finger with coupling-and-self-adaption mechanism, and verify four types of finger gesture under fuzzy logic control. In particular, the finger mechanism is analyzed with kinematics; angles of each link that composes the finger are derived with vector loop method; the finger's dimension is determined by the angular relationship between links and their static equilibrium. Before controlling the finger, the motor's model is identified, and fuzzy logic control is utilized to solve problems of modeling error and disturbances. Experimental results show a 6~18 mm root-mean-square error at the fingertip compared to the simulation. Besides, the minimum error appears when the finger bends 51.7 degrees in the second type of finger gesture, and the corresponding error is 0.46 mm in X-coordinate and 0.19 mm in Y- coordinate.

This article was a story of my own life. When I was just 28 years old with shallow life experience, I received an unexpected and forceful present that I really did not appreciate from the God, which depressed me for as long as 19 years with reluctance and unwillingness in my soul of childhood. At last, this wound burst open, through which I engaged in constant exploration and learning of life, and let myself start from my “heart”. And I accept my current status and keep on pursuing a better future through review and introspection of my past. So in this article, I am conducting an holistic-content analysis and interpretation in a narrative way, from which I will be aware of, refresh and rebuild myself. The study aims to let widows find the way of recovery and habituation based on personal narration of sad experience. It also explores how these widows could embrace the “pity” in past sadness and how to motivate internal power of recovery and habituation. Research results are as follows: Learn to face the dilemma and make compromise with setbacks; make right decisions, hold correct ideas and make self-acceptance unconditionally. Things must be learned from sadness, happiness, success and failure. Other than “missed” or “lost”, the current happiness to be held is worth the highest cherishment. Always believe that meaningful “life” depends on endless study and “self-inspiration”. For all the sad tears, accept the defects, shame, fear, disappointment for being abandoned and compromise; remain calm throughout the changeful life; keep on living a real life and regain the true ego. “Mind” is the king of rules; fuel the “mind” and bring power back to yourself. “Love yourself and others”, “forgive yourself and others”: forget the pities and minimize the harm. Through long-term “study”, face the setbacks unflinchingly and bring enlightenment to life. “Appreciate our parents and life”: most valuable thing to be explored is to “meet the real ego”; understand the life profoundly, not in a time-based manner. “Face pities with courage, learn how to get rebirth” throughout the life: live a meaningful life.

The numbers of new immigrations in Taiwan has increased recently, therefore the children of those immigrations also increase. In the future , the percentage of new immigrations’ children will be 1/10. It becomes a concern about the new immigration children’s education & learning situations. Some researches point out that due to the low social status, language problems of immigration mothers, and other disadvantage conditions, the immigration parents can’t be very helpful in children’s education, even cause a worse learning situation to their children. Through questionnaire analysis, this research will discuss if the language ability and academic self-concept will affect the learning and adaptation situations of new immigrations children. Do the immigrations children have issues of learning Chinese? Do the language ability of the immigration mothers affect their children ? This research’s samples are from the new immigration children in public junior high school in Tai-chug county. Through phone and personal, receive 383 questionnaires and there are 347 questionnaires are effective. Through statistical analysis, this research has the conclusions as below : 1. The academic self-concept points (2.83 points) and learning adaption situation are not very good (2.81 points), body & mind adaption (3.33 points) is better than learning environment adaption (3.06 points). The self-evaluation of Chinese level is middle. 2. The Chinese ability points of mothers are just well (3.20 points), listening(3.37 points) , speaking(3.587 points),reading(3.16 points)and writing (3.01 points) points are all fine. 3. Mainland Chinese national mothers’s Chinese ability (3.77 points)and Indonesia (2.88 points) are higher than the overall average score, Vietnam (2.81) and others (Thai, Burmese, Filipino) (2.97 points) were similar. 4. New immigrations’ children’s Chinese immigrants academic achievement, environmental adaptation, physical and psychological adaptation, learning adaptation to the different variables of "sex" have significant differences, and the girls better than boys. Academic self-concept of "gender" is not reached on the significant differences in the situation. 5. New immigrant children''s academic self-concept in different "grades" have significant differences (first grade above the third grade), Chinese academic performance, environmental adaptation, physical adaptation, learning to adapt to other variables in the different "grades" on the other hand does not meet significant differences in the situation. 6. New immigrant children''s Chinese immigrants academic achievement, academic self-concept, environmental adaptation, physical and emotional, learning adaptation to the different "socioeconomic status," are no significant differences in the situation to achieve. 7. Academic self-concept, environmental adaptation, physical adaptation, learning adaptation to the different "mother’s nationality" all reached significant difference in the situation. 8. The Chinese writing & listening ability of mother has obvious impact on children’s Chinese academic performance. 9. The Chinese speaking & listening ability of mother has obvious impact on children’s learning adaption situation. 10. The Chinese writing ability of mother has obvious impact on children’s academic self-concept. Abstract:

In this thesis we investigate how intelligent techniques, such as Evolutionary Algorithms, can be applied to finding solutions to discrete optimal control problems. Also, a detailed investigation is carried out into the design and development of a superior execution environment for Evolutionary Algorithms.

An overview of the basic processes of an Evolutionary Algorithm is given, as well as detailed descriptions for several genetic operators. Several additional operators that may be applied in conjunction with an Evolutionary Algorithm are also studied. These operators include several versions of the simplex method, as well as 3 distinct hill -climbers, each designed for a specific purpose. The hill -climbing routines have been designed for purposes that include local search, escaping local minima, and a hill -climbing routine designed for self -adaptation to a broad range of problems.

The mathematical programming formulation of discrete optimal control problems is used to generate a class of highly constrained problems. Techniques are developed to accurately and rapidly solve these problems, whilst satisfying the equality constraints to machine accuracy.

The improved execution environment for Evolutionary Algorithms proposes the use of a Graphical User Interface for data visualisation, algorithm control and monitoring, as well as a Client/Server network interface for connecting the GUI to remotely run algorithms.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to support new mothers in groups, so that they can function optimally as educators. During the research mothers with babies up to three months of age were used by means of a support group. This research project was done after it became evident from a literature study that new mothers suffered with unique problems during this adaption phase. In the empirical survey the researcher gave attention to the new mothers' specific needs and problems during this trimester. The researcher aimed to explore the experiences of the new mother as educator through weekly group sessions. From the results it was clear that there was a need of support from other mothers that is going through the same experiences. In this way new mothers could receive emotional support and obtain knowledge regarding relevant issues experienced during this unique life phase.
