Abstract:
Self-help psychology books contain claims that they can help individuals solve personal and social problems. However, there is little research on the efficacy of these books although theory and data from traditional, and behavioristic, bibliotherapy suggests that they might be valuable. This study examined the effects of self-help paperbacks on self-actualization scores in a 2 X 3 design that varied presence or absence of a pretest on the Personal Orientation Inventory and an intervening treatment condition which involved reading either one of two self-help books or reading no book. Self-actualization was measured by a posttest on the inventory. Significant effects were found for the pretest and treatment conditions on both the Inner-directedness and Time competence scales. The presence of a pretest, and both self-help books, led to higher self-actualization scores. These findings support the hypothesis that reading self-help psychology books may be associated with increased self-reported scores of mental health.

Abstract:
Difficulties in specifying the relationship between religious belief and self-actualization were presumed to reflect language differences in humanistic and religious articulations of selfhood. Christian versions of humanistic statements of self-actualization were administered to Christians, and a large number of successful translations were identified according to an empirical criterion. These items were combined into Christian self-actualization scales, and these scales displayed reliable and sometimes moderately strong correlations with religious orientation and healthy self-functioning. These data revealed how a Christian form of self-actualization might be articulated. More generally, they illustrated how empirical examinations of translation schemes might serve as a useful methodology for pursuing the goals of integration and for studying relationships between psychology and religion.

Abstract:
Ginsburg, Rogers, and Maslow, humanistic theorists, have maintained that the self is an emergent characteristic of one's biological makeup. The relationship between physical self-efficacy as an appraisal of subjective biology and self-actualization was examined in a sample of 160 black and white participants. An r of .46 supports the association of subjective biology and self-actualization. Whereas there were no gender or racial differences in scores on self-actualization, men scored higher on physical self-efficacy and subscales of perceived physical ability and perceived self-presentation confidence.

Abstract:
Self-actualizing individuals, according to Maslow (1954), are hypothesized to operate autonomously of external expectations due to their undistorted perceptions of their own realistic abilities. Scores on the Personal Orientation Inventory, a measure of self-actualization, were used to divide subjects into high, medium, or low self-actualizing categories. Subjects were given a Logical Reasoning Ability Test over three treatment conditions: high, low, and no expectations with regard to performance. Analyses indicated greater personal autonomy for high and moderate self-actualizing subjects than in nonself-actualizing subjects, who showed the greatest variance in their reasoning test scores.

Abstract:
Scores on self-actualization of 131 gifted students in Grades 4 through 8 were investigated using the Reflections of Self By Youth (ROSY) and the Maslowian Scale. Analysis of covariance indicated grade and gender were not significant effects in the various scores, and there was no interaction between grade and gender using scores on the ROSY. Means for students in Grade 8 were significantly higher than those for Grade 4 only on the Maslowian Scale-Psychological. Boys in Grade 4 scored significantly higher than girls on the Fundamentals and Total score. The ROSY and Maslowian Scale scores were significantly correlated ( R2 = .21).

Maslow suggested that individuals were more likely to realize levels of self-actualization as they became older. The Personal Orientation Inventory was administered to a random sample of 290 faculty members of a midwestern university to examine trends for self-actualization as related to age. Polynomial regression analysis yielded no trends for self-actualization and age, a finding which contradicts Maslow's earlier hypothesis that self-actualization increases with age.

Abstract:
This contribution sheds light on the potential of transparent user models for self-actualization. It discusses the development of EDUSS, a conceptual framework for self-actualization goals of transparent user modeling. Drawing from a qualitative research approach, the framework investigates self-actualization from psychology and computer science disciplines and derives a set of self-actualization goals and mechanisms. Following a human-centered design (HCD) approach, the framework was applied in an iterative process to systematically design a set of interactive visualizations to help users achieve different self-actualization goals in the scientific research domain. For this purpose, an explainable user interest model within a recommender system is utilized to provide various information on how the interest models are generated from users’ publication data. The main contributions are threefold: First, a synthesis of research on self-actualization from different domains. Second, EDUSS, a theoretically-sound self-actualization framework for transparent user modeling consisting of five main goals, namely, Explore, Develop, Understand, Scrutinize, and Socialize. Third, an instantiation of the proposed framework to effectively design interactive visualizations that can support the different self-actualization goals, following an HCD approach.

Abstract:
The concept of self-actualization has been the subject of much theoretical speculation over the years. The essential meaning entails the discovery of the real self and its expression and development. As for the instruments available to measure the construct, there are currently several scales considered to be suitable to this end. However, many of these have been considered too long or presented problems with inadequate validation. This is the reason why a short index of self-actualization has been developed (Jones & Crandall, 1986). This index, best known as the Short Index of Self-Actualization or the Self-Actualization Scale (SAS), is now a widely used short form to measure self-actualization. The present study provides a psychometric analysis of the SAS, in order to highlight its strengths and weaknesses and to offer a starting point to a further and broaden investigation.

Abstract:
The subject of the research is self–actualization and subjectiveness of men and women looking for a job, and the goal is to identify differences. The article uses the method of psychological testing, i.e. J.E. Aleshina’s adaptation of E.L. Shostrom’s SAT test and M.A. Shchukina’s LPSD test. As a result of the study, both groups have revealed developed subjectiveness and a minimum of signs of self-actualization. In the group of men the indicator of orientation in time corresponds to the level of personality disorders, in the women one it is normative, with more developed self-support. Signs of self-actualization in men are marked only by contact, in women – by contact, acceptance of aggression, and flexibility of behavior. The share of self-actualizing men is 13 %, of women is about 22 %. Men have a higher level of subjectiveness, in the structure of which creativity dominates, and women have integrity. The field of application of the results obtained is applied and practical social psychology, and psychology of employment services. Prospects of the study conclude development of self-actualization programs for young people in search for a new job. The article concludes young men and women with work experience looking for a new place of employment emphasize their subjectiveness and do not hurry to include self-actualization mechanisms to become more competitive.

Abstract:
In the world where a broken family can breaks someone’s life, can self-actualization bring a better life to broken home children? Claire Legrand’s Some Kind of Happiness tells us about Finley Hart, an eleven years old child, who visits her estranged grandparents because her parents have problems leading to divorce. With a lot of mental problems faced by the character, this study wants to analyze how four basic needs build self-actualization. researcher collects the data from character Finley Hart in the novel Some Kind of Happiness with general inductive approach. This method enables researcher to dig significant data about Finley’s psychology over general condition in the story. Researcher also uses hierarchy of human needs theory by Abraham Maslow. This theory provides a structural explanation about basic human needs, self-actualization, and its benefit. From the study, researcher finds that every basic needs are important and supports each other in order to bring self-actualization. Self-actualization itself is crucial for it bring contentment to oneself. With the benefit of self-actualization, Finley has become a better and happier person. It proves that basic needs and self-actualization are essential for broken-home children.

Abstract:
Self-actualization is the peak experience in Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. Maslow's hierarchy of needs consists of physiological needs, the need for a sense of security (safety needs), the need to have affection (social needs), esteem needs, and self-actualization. The purpose of this study is to describe how Maslow's holistic-dynamic theory describes self-actualization and the Sufistic view of the concept of self-actualization. This study employs a qualitative research method in conjunction with a type of literature review. The data collection technique used is documentation. The results of the study show that Sufistic psychology views self-actualization as a peak experience that is not absolute because humans are not just physical, mechanical beings. Ibn 'Arabi views that humans will reach a peak experience when they have abandoned themselves to unite with God (fana'); then humans must experience four levels: Shari'a, Tariqah, essence, and makrifat. In addition, al-Ghazali also emphasized the fulfillment of mashlahah al-'amm as his peak experience.

Abstract:
AEON-HO (Altering emotional organization-holistic operation) contains methods of Naikan therapy and mindfulness. Naikan and mindfulness are originally from Buddhism tradition, and they have a high affinity. AEON-HO was conceptualized to improve attachment issues and the growth of self-actualization, because Naikan and mindfulness are known to be effective for attachment issues but partially if they are used independently. Naikan can approach to attachment avoidance, while mindfulness can approach to attachment anxiety. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of AEON-HO on attachment styles, self-actualization, and depression by using “attachment style scale the Experiences in Close Relationships inventory–the generalized–other–version (ECR-GO),” “self-actualization scale” translated to Japanese, and “center for epidemiologic studies for depression scale.” Participants have taken these three psychological questionnaires before and after the eight-week program of AEON-HO, and the results of scales were compared. Participants were 36 adults with a mean age of 49 years ( SD = 3.9). Changes in two attachment styles, anxiety and avoidance and depressive state, were observed between pre- and posttest, while there were no significant changes in self-actualization. However, attachment anxiety and self-actualization were correlated negatively in pre- and posttest, while attachment avoidance and self-actualization were correlated negatively only in pretest.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of features of professional self-actualization of students-psychologists living in crisis of professional readiness. The definition of the term self-actualization and professional self-actualization among the works of domestic, Russian and foreign scientists is considered. In particular, professional self-actualization is defined as a complex multilevel phenomenon, a process of directed activity aimed at progress in one's own professional development, which is conditioned by the disclosure of one's own professional potential. Three approaches to the study of self-actualization in the professional sphere are highlighted: subject-activity, where professional activity is the main basis for self-actualization of the individual, due to difficulties and internal contradictions; personal development, where professional self-actualization leads to profound internal changes and forms and professional maturity; acmeological, in which professional self-actualization is the achievement of the highest level of professionalism, professional and personal maturity ("acme"). The concept of crisis of professional readiness and features of living of crisis by psychology students are analyzed. It is noted that the level of experiences of the crisis of professional readiness is the most intense among other normative crises of professional training. The peculiarities of the crisis development are highlighted: the contradiction between the awareness of the beginning of professional activity and at the same time the lack of readiness. The intra-personal conflict between learning motivations and professional motivation is determined. A number of features of professional self-actualization of students-psychologists and their interrelation with the crisis of professional readiness are considered.

This study was conducted to analyze the life journey of the main character of The Bell Jar in achieving herself-actualization. The purposes of this study are to describe the character of the main character in The Bell Jar and to describe the main character in achieving self-actualization and how it is portrayed in the novel. This study was done using a descriptive qualitative method and using Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs theory and New Criticism theory to explain the main character and her journey in achieving self-actualization in the form of words. The object of the study was the novel The Bell Jar and this study focused on Esther Greenwood as the main character. List of an observational sheet was used as the research instrument and the data was taken through library research. The analysis was conducted by interpreting Esther’s utterances and actions using New Criticism theory to describe Esther’s characterization and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs theory to describe Esther’s self-actualization. The study results showed that Esther’s self-actualization is the results of her being able to fulfill her previous stages both directly and indirectly before reaching self-actualization stage along her life journey. Abstract:
This study tested the prediction that individual differences in self-actualization would be associated with six academic orientations which influence college students' adjustment to their studies. Volunteer undergraduates, solicited from courses in the sciences and liberal arts and invited to complete internet measures of the academic orientations and self-actualization were 137 men and 311 women ( M age = 21.1, SD = 4.8). Statistically significant bivariate correlations obtained between scores on self-actualization with all six orientations: creative expression, reading for pleasure, academic efficacy, and, inversely, structure dependence, academic apathy, and mistrust of instructors. Regression analysis showed that four orientations were independently related to self-actualization scores. The role of these four orientations in actualizing students' adjustment was discussed, and implications were drawn about the interpretation of scores on the four orientations.

Abstract:
The previously unexplored relationship of self-actualization to life stress and perceived social support from family and from friends was investigated. Measures of all variables were administered to 54 female and 52 male adult undergraduate students (age range of 18–81 years). The relationship of each variable to psychological adjustment (depression) also was assessed. As predicted, correlational results revealed self-actualization to be related positively to perceived social support and inversely to depression and life stress. Social support was inversely related to depression, and life stress was related positively to depression. Significant sex differences discovered in the relationship of self-actualization to perceived social support are discussed in terms of possible sex differences in the developmental process of self-actualization.

Abstract:
Previous research found that aspirations to financial success related inversely to self-actualization and that aspirations to community involvement related positively to self-actualization. We argue that diverse reasons can underlie both of these aspirations, leading to more complex predictions. In a sample of 246 participants, we assessed both self-determining and controlling reasons for each class of aspiration, along with endorsements of the aspirations themselves. Initial regression analyses replicated the earlier findings. Subsequent analyses found that endorsement of self-determining reasons for either class of aspiration related positively to self-actualization and that endorsement of controlling reasons for either class of aspiration related inversely to self-actualization. In the analysis involving community involvement, the aspiration itself no longer retained predictive power after the other variables were taken into account. In the analysis involving financial success, however, the aspiration retained an independent predictive role.

Abstract:
The article considers the issues of studying the self-actualization of the personality by the representatives of various conceptual schools. We consider distance learning in the higher education system as a capacity for opportunities, as the implementation of an individual approach in learning, motivating the student to self-learn, freedom from rigid binding to the territory and a certain period of time, objective assessment of learning results. The study's goal is to investigate the connection between the self-actualization of the personality and the level of students' stress resistance in the process of distance learning. Research methods: questionnaires and testing. Based on theoretical analysis, the methodological basis of the study was determined in relation to the self-actualization of the personality as the highest level of its development in the context of humanistic psychology, distance learning. As a result of an empirical study, the authors of the article revealed the correlation between the ambition for self-actualization and the level of stress resistance. The ambition for self-actualization correlates with the level of assessment of one’s effectiveness in distance learning, and there are sex differences according to the criteria of the ambition for self-actualization and the level of stress resistance.

Abstract:
Time-concentrated group instruction in self-actualization may increase the immediate risk of diminished self-actualization by introducing an environment which encourages cohesion to the group rather than loyalty to self. This is the conclusion reached in a study of a course in Gestalt Therapy which emphasized self-actualization through self-awareness. Comparison of students enrolled in a time-concentrated summer course ( n = 42) or a time-distributed regular-term course with the same instructor ( n = 78) showed summer students had significantly less desirable scores than regular term students on five subscales of the Personal Orientation Inventory while also significantly decreasing the total number of subscales falling in the actualized ranges.

Abstract:
Many authors have questioned the validity of the major existing measures of self-actualization (the Personal Orientation Inventory, the Personal Orientation Dimensions, and the Short Index of Self-actualization), given their serious theoretical and methodological limitations. A new inventory was developed, the Measure of Actualization of Potential, and various studies were conducted to assess its theoretical and empirical content as well as its construct validity, internal consistency, and temporal reliability. The present aim was to estimate the criterion validity of the new measure using humanistic clinical psychologists' assessments as the criterion. The results show that eight clinical psychologists' rankings of 73 individuals are positively and highly correlated with the scores obtained by the same individuals on the Measure of Actualization of Potential.

Abstract:
A person should achieve maximum satisfaction in life and achieve balance between physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects as the manifestation of self-actualization. This research aims to reveal that an individual who experiences a self-actualization process is able to recognize and develop their talents, abilities and values. The entire research is carried out using a qualitative descriptive method to reveal that self-actualization can be used as a guide to achieving harmony between all elements of the environment. In the data collection procedures, all the data with a focus on self-actualzation are gathered from the novel, covering a comprehensive data selection to meet the objectives of the study. The selected data are then sorted out to be conformed with the types of self-actualization as the points of analysis. For the data analysis, deductive frequency method of analysis is applied, going from general to specific analysis. All the types of data needed are classified, coded and interpreted comprehensively based on the focus of the study. The main data source is obtained from the novel above and subsequently from other related references. By using a humanistic psychology approach with the concept of the process of self-understanding which is then generated with the theory of human needs by Abraham Maslow, with a formulation of the levels of human needs starting from the most basic to gaining self-understanding, it is found that the novel contains the concept of self-actualization in the form of free will, responsibility and self-awareness.

Abstract:
The study subject is self-actualization and subjectivity in men looking for work. The purpose of this research is to identify the features of their self-actualization and subjectivity. Such methods of psychodiagnostics as the “SAT” technique by E. Shostrom (adapted by Yu.E. Aleshina et al.); the “URSL” test by M.A. Shchukina were used. Taking into account the main results of the study, the author came to the conclusion that the sample as a whole revealed problematic self-actualization and a fairly high overall level of subjectivity. In 83% of respondents, self-actualization was revealed only by contact. The proportion of men who recognize the values of a self-actualizing personality was 34%. A direct close connection between self-actualization and subjectivity has been established. The field of application of the found results is the social psychology of personality (the data received are important for assessing the socio-psychological readiness of men to promptly solve the problem of employment using intrapersonal resources). Mentioning the prospects of the study, it should be advisable to perform a comparative analysis of data by gender. The results obtained are valuable for practical social psychologists in terms of helping young men who find it difficult to realize their intentions to find a new job due to problematic self-actualization and insufficient subjectivity.
