Full textThe subject of this dissertation is a history of the chemical element selenium from the prehistory of the discovery of selenium around 1783 to the 1920s. Methodically, the work follows proposals from the Science and Technology Studies, not to focus on the human actors, but to ask in which way things as non-human beings also create a difference, which allows to question their pure objecthood and makes them actors of history. The aim of the work was to recontextualize the historical preconditions that made the different events in the life of the selenium possible in the first place. The work is based on a very broad source base. The period of investigation extends from the first publications in the expanded context of the prehistory of the discovery of selenium in 1783, the discovery of the light-sensitive properties of selenium by W. Smith in 1873 up to the 1920s, when the use of the selenium cell in various inventions around the topic of remote control and automation comes to a provisional end. The work presented here as »Selenium – A Biographeme« makes a change of perspective: The chemical element selenium is the protagonist of the investigation. The present work contributes its part to the media-historical analysis of the history of television. The focus is on developments in the field of technical image transmission at the beginning of the 20th century. But also the history of the discovery of selenium, as well as its use in the context of the laying of the transatlantic telegraph cable–to call up only two further historical nodes–must henceforth be viewed in a different light.

Full textSince selenium was discovered as an essential trace element being widely distributed, and since glutathione peroxidase is known as a selenoenzyme, associations with several severe diseases were established (Keshan disease, Kaschin-Beck syndrome). Despite these known selenium deficiency diseases a related human therapy is still not established so far. In veterinary medicine, however, substitution of selenium is already a standard therapy. Our laboratory investigates the role of selenium since 1990. This includes investigations about the effects of selenium in acute inflammatory diseases in intensive care, in the reperfusion phenomenon following vascular surgery, and in oncology. In acute pancreatitis and sepsis, adjuvant therapy using sodium selenite seems to have positive effects on the overall outcome of patients (a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial on sepsis is being prepared). New findings concerning the influence of selenium on transcription factors in inflammatory processes will permit a scientifically sound interpretation of clinical results. With further investigations in molecular biology the trace element selenium will become, in the next decade, one of the most interesting topics in intensive care and oncology

Full textThe focus of the following work is the correlation between the field-stop design and the behaviour of high-voltage power diodes. The objective is to present a further improvement of the diode performance using a special field-stop, which optimizes the diode in relation to a soft switching behaviour and an increased robustness. The function of such a field-stop is investigated. Benefits are shown of materials for field-stops with deep impurities in the semiconductor material and of multiple stepped deep field-stop structures. Therefore a central role have silicon diodes with selenium in the field-stop layer. Measurements and simulations with the power device simulator Sentaurus TCAD are done and explain the named correlations. The deep level transient spectroscopy is used as method to analyse the required impurity parameters. Beside this method the evaluation is done by the introduced frequency resolved admittance spectroscopy.
