Abstract:
Selen je esencijalni mikroelement koji ljudi i životinje u organizam unose putem hrane. Uloga selena u organizmu je višestruka zbog njegovog sudjelovanja u nizu biokemijskih procesa. Međutim, vrlo niska razina selena u tlu, a posljedično tome i u krmi, može prouzročiti deficit ovog mikroelementa kod životinja, te kod ljudi. Deficit selena kod životinja može se očitovati kroz mnoge degenerativne promjene, bolest gušterače, slabiju reprodukciju i imunitet te različite mišićne distrofije, a kod ptica uzrokuje pojavu eksudativne dijateze, lošije operjavanje, slabiju proizvodnju, oplođenost i valivost jaja, lošiju kvalitetu konzumnih jaja i slično. Osim deficita koji je učestaliji, kod životinja se može javiti i suficit ovog mikroelementa. Dugoročan unos više razine selena u organizam može uzrokovati trovanje. U hranidbi peradi selen se dodaje u dva oblika, anorganskom ili organskom. Znanstveno je potvrđeno da je apsorpcija selena puno učinkovitija ukoliko se selen u hrani nalazi u organskom obliku. Zbog toga se preporučuje u hranu za perad dodavati selen u obliku seleniziranog kvasca ili, u novije vrijeme, žitarice fortificirane selenom. U raznim istraživanjima dokazano je da meso i jaja s povećanim sadržajem selena predstavljaju novi potencijalni izvor ovog elementa u ljudskoj prehrani te se mogu ponuditi kao obogaćeni proizvodi. Cilj rada je prikazati važnost korištenja selena u hrani kokoši za proizvodnju i kvalitetu jaja, antioksidativnu aktivnost te povećanje sadržaja selena u jajima.

Abstract:
Selen je važan mikroelement u prehrani ljudi i hranidbi životinja. Cilj ovoga rada je prikazati metode/postupke koji se poduzimaju u procesu obogaćivanja janjećeg mesa selenom. Različitim hranidbenim modifikacijama moguće je značajno promijeniti (prije svega poboljšati) sadržaj minerala u janjećem mesu pa tako i selena. Unos selena u janjadi varira zbog promjene elementarnog sastava biljnih vrsta tijekom sezone, te koncentracije u krmnoj smjesi. Hranidbeni čimbenici imaju značajan utjecaj na sadržaj selena u janjećem mesu. Selen organskog podrijetla, osobito podrijetlom od biofortificiranih krmiva pokazuje bolju dostupnost u odnosu na anorganski izvor a korišteni su za poboljšanje zdravlja i proizvodnosti te mogu biti put u procesu obogaćivanja janjećeg mesa selenom prirodnim putem. Analizom dosadašnjih dostupnih istraživanja vidljiv je značajan utjecaj dodatka selena (organski oblici) ili korištenih biofortificiranih krmiva selenom u hrani janjadi na njegov sadržaj u janjećem mesu te je to put koji treba koristiti u procesu obogaćivanja janjećeg mesa selenom

Abstract:
ZusammenfassungSelen ist für die Synthese von Schilddrüsenhormonen und das Abfangen von reaktiven Sauerstoffspezies bei dieser Reaktion wichtig. Neben das Jod tritt somit Selen als ein wichtiges Spurenelement, das für die physiologische Thyroideafunktion unabdingbar ist. Sowohl bei einer Unterfunktion (Hypothyreose) als auch bei einer Überfunktion (Hyperthyreose) kann mit Selen therapeutisch eingegriffen werden. Noch völlig unterschätzt ist bislang der Einfluss von Selen auf eine korrekte Schilddrüsenfunktion während der Schwangerschaft sowie auf die neurokognitive Entwicklung des Kindes nach der Geburt.

Abstract:
Der Gegenstand der vorliegenden Dissertationsschrift ist eine Geschichte des chemischen Elements Selen von der Vorgeschichte seiner Entdeckung um 1783 bis in die 1920er Jahren. Methodisch folgt die Arbeit Vorschlägen aus den Science and Technology Studies, nicht die menschlichen Akteure ins Zentrum zu stellen, sondern danach zu fragen, in welcher Weise auch Dinge als nicht-menschliche Wesen eine Differenz erzeugen, die ihre reine Objekthaftigkeit zu hinterfragen erlaubt und sie zu Akteuren der Geschichte macht. Ziel der Arbeit war eine Rekontextualisierung der historischen Voraussetzungen, die die unterschiedlichen Ereignisse im Leben des Selens erst möglich gemacht haben. Die Arbeit stützt sich auf eine sehr breite Quellenbasis. Der Untersuchungszeitraum erstreckt sich von ersten Publikationen im erweiterten Kontext der Vorgeschichte der Entdeckung des Selens im Jahr 1783, die Entdeckung der lichtsensitiven Eigenschaften W. Smith 1873 bis in die 1920er Jahre, als der Einsatz der Selenzelle in diversen Erfindungen rund um das Thema der Fernsteuerung und Automatisierung zu einem vorläufigen Ende kommt. Die hier als »Selen – Ein Biographem« vorgestellte Arbeit unternimmt einen Perspektivenwechsel: Das chemische Element Selen ist der Protagonist der Untersuchung. Die Arbeit trägt einen Teil zur medienhistorischen Aufarbeitung der Geschichte des Fernsehens bei, wobei der Fokus auf den Entwicklungen im Bereich der technischen Bildübertragung zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts liegt. Aber auch die Geschichte der Entdeckung des Selens sowie der Einsatz desselben im Kontext der Verlegung des transatlantischen Telegraphenkabels – um nur zwei weitere historische Knoten aufzurufen – müssen fortan in einem anderen Licht betrachtet werden.
The subject of this dissertation is a history of the chemical element selenium from the prehistory of the discovery of selenium around 1783 to the 1920s. Methodically, the work follows proposals from the Science and Technology Studies, not to focus on the human actors, but to ask in which way things as non-human beings also create a difference, which allows to question their pure objecthood and makes them actors of history. The aim of the work was to recontextualize the historical preconditions that made the different events in the life of the selenium possible in the first place. The work is based on a very broad source base. The period of investigation extends from the first publications in the expanded context of the prehistory of the discovery of selenium in 1783, the discovery of the light-sensitive properties of selenium by W. Smith in 1873 up to the 1920s, when the use of the selenium cell in various inventions around the topic of remote control and automation comes to a provisional end. The work presented here as »Selenium – A Biographeme« makes a change of perspective: The chemical element selenium is the protagonist of the investigation. The present work contributes its part to the media-historical analysis of the history of television. The focus is on developments in the field of technical image transmission at the beginning of the 20th century. But also the history of the discovery of selenium, as well as its use in the context of the laying of the transatlantic telegraph cable–to call up only two further historical nodes–must henceforth be viewed in a different light.

Mit der Entdeckung des Selens als essentielles Spurenelement und der Glutathionperoxidase als Selenoenzym sowie der Tatsache, daû Selenmangel relativ weit verbreitet ist, wurde erstmals ein Zusammenhang zu einigen schweren Erkrankungen hergestellt (Keshan-Krankheit, Kaschin-Beck-Syndrom). Interessant ist dabei, daû sich trotz dieser und anderer bekannter Selenmangelerkrankungen eine Therapie in der Humanmedizin nur langsam zu etablieren beginnt, waÈ hrend die Selensupplementation in der VeterinaÈ rmedizin bereits Standard ist. Die Autoren beschaÈ ftigen sich seit 1990 mit der Rolle des Spurenelements Selen bei septischen Krankheitsbildern in der Intensivmedizin, beim ReperfusionsphaÈnomen nach gefaÈûchirurgischen Eingriffen und in der Onkologie. Sie konnten zeigen, daû die adjuvante Therapie der akuten Pankreatitis und der Sepsis mit Natriumselenit einen positiven Effekt auf das Outcome der Patienten zu haben scheint (eine multizentrische, doppelblinde, randomisierte Sepsisstudie zur Validierung dieser Ergebnisse ist in Vorbereitung). Neue Erkenntnisse zur Beeinflussung von Transkriptionsfaktoren durch Selen bei systemischem Inflammationssyndrom und Sepsis erlauben eine wissenschaftlich fundierte Interpretation der klinischen Ergebnisse. Weitere molekularbiologische Untersuchungen werden das Spurenelement Selen zu einem der interessantesten Forschungsprojekte der naÈ chsten 10 Jahre in Intensivmedizin und Onkologie machen
Since selenium was discovered as an essential trace element being widely distributed, and since glutathione peroxidase is known as a selenoenzyme, associations with several severe diseases were established (Keshan disease, Kaschin-Beck syndrome). Despite these known selenium deficiency diseases a related human therapy is still not established so far. In veterinary medicine, however, substitution of selenium is already a standard therapy. Our laboratory investigates the role of selenium since 1990. This includes investigations about the effects of selenium in acute inflammatory diseases in intensive care, in the reperfusion phenomenon following vascular surgery, and in oncology. In acute pancreatitis and sepsis, adjuvant therapy using sodium selenite seems to have positive effects on the overall outcome of patients (a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial on sepsis is being prepared). New findings concerning the influence of selenium on transcription factors in inflammatory processes will permit a scientifically sound interpretation of clinical results. With further investigations in molecular biology the trace element selenium will become, in the next decade, one of the most interesting topics in intensive care and oncology

Abstract:
Die Anforderungen an schnelle Dioden sind sehr hoch für große Spannungen und große Ströme. Die Beeinflussung des Bauelementverhaltens durch das Design des Dotierprofils mit einem tiefen mehrstufigen Feldstopp aus Selen bildet einen zentralen Punkt der Dissertation. Mit physikalischen Messverfahren werden die in der Literatur nur unzureichend untersuchten Eigenschaften von Selen in Silizium erfasst und als Basis für Bauelementsimulationen verwendet. Für die Untersuchung der Störstelleneigenschaften kommt die klassische aufwändige DLTS zum Einsatz. Des Weiteren werden für diese Untersuchungen die Vorteile der einfacheren frequenzabhängigen Admittanzspektroskopie ausführlich dargelegt. Anhand der Bauelementsimulationen erfolgt ein Vergleich mit Messungen und führt zur Vorstellung und Erläuterung einer verbesserten soften und robusten Diodenstruktur mit tiefen Donatoren aus Selen.
The focus of the following work is the correlation between the field-stop design and the behaviour of high-voltage power diodes. The objective is to present a further improvement of the diode performance using a special field-stop, which optimizes the diode in relation to a soft switching behaviour and an increased robustness. The function of such a field-stop is investigated. Benefits are shown of materials for field-stops with deep impurities in the semiconductor material and of multiple stepped deep field-stop structures. Therefore a central role have silicon diodes with selenium in the field-stop layer. Measurements and simulations with the power device simulator Sentaurus TCAD are done and explain the named correlations. The deep level transient spectroscopy is used as method to analyse the required impurity parameters. Beside this method the evaluation is done by the introduced frequency resolved admittance spectroscopy.

Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to determine and monitor the influence of E-Selen supliment on the antioxidant status of Flecvieh cows during the transition and early lactation period as well as all changes during this period. Determined parameters were GSH-Px; TAC; ROM; MAS. Most significant changes was observed in TAC and GSH-Px. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the plasma during transition period in the experimental group is characterized by an increase in its value, compared to antepartum, and in the control group by a decrease; and maintaining higher values compared to the control group in the postpartum period. Results obtained in the dynamics of (GSH-Px) in plasma, characterized by maintaining a higher level in the experimental group compared to the control group, beginning with 20 days antepartum and ending 30 days p/p. Balance of antioxidant status during the transition and onset of lactation is of major importance for the state of metabolic health in highly productive milk cows. Administration of the E-Selen supplement to cows, 30 days before parturition, had an influence on antioxidant status indices, expressed by maintaining their positive dynamics compared to control group.

The additive ingredients (in %): vitamin E - 0,32; vitamin D₃ - 0,30; vitamin C - 0,30; vitamin B₄ - 1,56; vitamin B₁₂ - 0,004; betaine - 10,00; %; bentonite - 77,166; Omek J – 0,15%; selen - 0,2 %; soya flour (filling substance) - 10,00. Components activity: vitamin E-50,0 of %; D₃ - 0,15,0 thousand ME in 1g; B₄ - 60,0 %; B₁₂ - 1,0%; Omek J - 2,0%; seleno-KI - 0,2 %. The functional feed additive is approved on fattened pigs of large white breed. Animals from control group received the mixed fodder constantly used in a factory, skilled - same as well as control, but the containing 1 % of the additive within 10 days before slaughter. Growth, some indicators of a metabolism, quality of meat are studied.

Abstract:
Forty-seven poly-TG microsatellites were developed at the U of IL, and 11 genetic markers were developed at ARO, nine of which were poly-AGC microsatellites. Markers were typed on the reference families of CSIRO, Australia; GRANADA, Texas; and IRRF, Illinois, for chromosome assignment and linkage mapping. Nine North American al organizations contributed semen to the Dairy Bull DNA Repository (DBDR), which currently has 65,743 units from 3366 bulls. Semen was obtained for 31 out of 35 grandsires. Semen of 28 and 23 sons of two Israeli bulls was also collected. Eighteen grandsires were genotyped for 75 microsatellites. One thousand, three hundred and sixty-two sons with evaluation from 17 families were genotyped for 24 markers. Eleven thousand, six hundred and twenty sons genotypes were determined, of which 8,802 were informative. The genotype data was matched to the bulls' daughter yield deviations (DYD) for seven traits; milk, fat, and protein production; fat and protein percent; somatic cell concentration (SCS); and productive herd life. Seven loci had significant effects at p<0.05, but only two loci, TGLA263 and MGTG7, had significant effects at p<0.01, and the effect of TGLA263 on fat percentage was significant at p<0.0001. There was at least one significant effect for each of the seven traits analyzed.
