Abstract:
This Book gathers original tutorials delivered as lectures by the authors at the international Femto-UP 2020 School, which took place online from 8th to 29th of March 2021 and gathered 600 participants worldwide. Like the previous occurrences of the Femto-UP School, the 2020 edition and this Book do target a multidisciplinary public of scientists at various points of their carrier from undergraduate and graduate students to senior researchers and technical staff. The aim is to provide generic scientific knowledge on ultrafast laser technologies including, generation, amplification, manipulation and characterization of ultrashort laser pulses, and pedagogical accounts of a selection of state-of-the-art applications of ultrashort laser pulses. The Femto-UP 2020 School comprised numerical practical sessions using original pedagogical or technical numerical tools (based on the Python programming language) also included to this Book as supplementary electronic material.

Practicalities of using TENS for specific conditions and situations. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199673278.003.0007.

Abstract:
Research studies have failed to evaluate different TENS techniques for specific conditions. Safe and appropriate TENS technique is based on the use of conventional TENS delivered at a strong, non-painful intensity at the site of pain in the first instance with patients selecting pulse pattern, frequency, and duration for reasons of comfort. In practice, it is necessary to adapt this approach for specific painful conditions. The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate how the general principles of good practice are applied when using TENS to manage various painful conditions. The chapter discusses acute pain, including post-operative pain and labour pain, chronic musculoskeletal pain, including back pain and osteoarthritis, chronic neuropathic pain, including peripheral and central neuropathic pain, cancer pain, and TENS for children and the elderly.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 returns to John Higgins, who edited a selection of extant Mirror complaints for publication in 1586–7. Beginning with the reprinting of Thomas Norton and Thomas Sackville’s Inns of Court tragedy Gorboduc in 1590 alongside John Lydgate’s Serpent of Division, a publication which similarly pulled together ancient British and Roman narratives of assassination and civil conflict, the chapter interprets Higgins’s revisions and additions to his own First Part of the Mirror and suggests that they point to a change of emphasis. Higgins seems to have updated the work to sharpen its political focus at a moment of heightened national and international tension. The chapter then turns to his engagement with the use of moral exempla in the collection of Roman tragedies with which he enlarged the edition, and argues for a growing sense of disillusionment in their efficacy.

Clark, Caroline, Jeffrey Cole, Christine Winter, and Geoffrey Grammer. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190205959.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often fail to resolve with psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, or integrative medicine treatments. Given these limitations, there is a continued push to discover treatment methods utilizing novel mechanisms of action. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) offers a non-invasive and safe method of brain stimulation that modulates neuronal activity in a focal area to achieve excitation or inhibition, and may have utility for patients suffering from PTSD, although, to date, evidence of efficacy is limited. The TMS treatment can be varied to suit the needs of the patient by altering the selection of the specific treatment parameters, such as pulse frequency or stimulation intensity. The weight of evidence to date supports treatment of either the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex or the medical prefrontal cortex. Coupling treatment with script based exposure therapies may also assist with potentiation of the extinction response. Ultimately, stimulation parameters may be related to secondary downstream effects, and thus current targets may indirectly reverse the underlying neuronal pathophysiology. Given that PTSD is a complex illness with a poorly understood pathophysiology, it often exists with other psychiatric comorbidities or TBI. As such, TMS could be an effective part of a comprehensive treatment program.

Abstract:
This chapter details the selection of Octave Chanute to design and build a lasting bridge across the unbridged Missouri River at Kansas City. The offer to bridge the Missouri, the most difficult of all navigable streams, was a compliment for Chanute, but also a formidable challenge to his ambition as a civil engineer. The completion of the bridge called for the construction of about four hundred miles of connecting roads, bringing urbanization to the Kansas frontier. The thirty-seven-year-old Chanute built this rail system and connected it with eastern railroads, bringing profit to both systems. During the first 230 days of operation, 5,263 locomotives had pulled their load across the bridge, and $5,706 had been collected in tolls from street traffic. The chapter also describes Chanute's appointment as chief engineer of the Missouri River, Fort Scott & Gulf Railroad and his involvement in construction of the Kansas City & Santa Fe Railroad, Galveston Railroad, and Atchison & Nebraska Railroad.
