Full textTransfers play a pivotal role in football players' careers and are central to the management of professional football clubs. The price and value of players are, therefore, critical elements for all stakeholders: players, clubs, and agents. The objective of this thesis is to distinguish, define and measure the price and value of professional football players. It consists of three self-referencing articles, presented in as many chapters. The first chapter draws upon the subjective theory of value to propose a distinction between the concepts of value and price as applied to players. It introduces the concepts of use value and market value within the context of transfers, and critically discusses Transfermarkt values against this theoretical framework. The second chapter conducts a systematic literature review of the determinants influencing players' valuation. This review identifies and classifies explanatory factors tested in academic literature, extracting a concise list of essential determinants supported by sufficient evidence. The third chapter describes a market-oriented model for football player valuation, based on a predictive model of transfer fees. A Heckman two-step model is implemented to correct for selection bias, given that players do not have the same probability of being transferred for a fee. In our context, this model outperforms the extreme gradient boosting algorithm. It provides reliable, unbiased estimations of player prices and transfer probabilities. It also provides conditional and unconditional marginal effects, quantifying the influence of multiple factors on the price of players. The player's club plays a prominent role in the price determination, as demonstrated by the influence on the predicted transfer fee of its league, UEFA ranking, and season outcome (UEFA Champions League qualification or relegation). Overall player performance, ability to be decisive, age, remaining contract length, playing time and national team FIFA ranking are also key price determinants

Full textThe objective of this thesis was to assess the impact of playing position on detection, training and selection in male elite handball. Studies 1 and 2 investigated talent identification. The purpose of this first study was to measure the magnitude of the differences in physical performance, body dimensions and maturity with regards of the playing position and laterality in young selected players. Physical and anthropometrical profiles were important to guide players to the playing-positions where they could make the elite level and that it is important to consider the laterality of the players. The objective of the second study was to determine if differences in body dimensions exist between playing positions and playing standards, using a large population of elite players. The large amplitudes in body dimensions for each playing position showed that there are some opportunities for players with atypical morphology in elite handball, but that the differences between each position are important. The fourth and fifth articles aimed on training with regards of playing position. The fourth study, a literature review, provided a comprehensive analysis of technical and physical demands of male elite handball. It appears that playing position should be systematically taken into account in game analysis. The purpose of the fourth study was to measure the effects of 3 different modalities on the flight time during shoot from the wing position and on their scoring percentage. Three different modalities was applied any constraint (control condition), build on 20 cm step and with a weighted vest corresponding to 5% of their body weight. These results suggested that increasing flying time of wing player did not result in a substantial improvement in the scoring percentage. Furthermore, the effect of the flying time on the scoring percentage is playing-position dependent. With the latest study we tried to determine whether trimester or semester of birth in a 2 years category influenced the selection of elite handball players and their playing time with regard of the playing position. Results suggested that it was paramount to consider playing positions in analyzing the effects of relative age. In handball, playing positions affect locomotor and physiological demands, anthropometric and physical profile but also the training and the selection of the players. In overall, playing position is a parameter (sometimes underestimated) that must absolutely take into account in elite handball

Full textIn sports psychology, researchers mostly analyzed athletes’ perceptual cognitive skills using the “experts-novices” paradigm (Wrisberg, 2001). Depending on the research context (e.g., expertise, task representativeness), the number and duration of ocular fixations vary (Broadbent et al., 2015). However, one result seems consistent from one study to the next: expert athletes anticipate better the follow-up action than novices do (McRobert et al., 2011). In the last two decades, an observable trend in sports psychology invites researchers to clarify the notion of perceptual-cognitive expertise by comparing expert athletes among themselves. These studies aim at isolating subtle factors involved in expert performance (e.g., Milazzo et al., 2015). A factor yet to be studied in this perspective concern decisional responsibilities. From an expertise perspective, volleyball is quite interesting: it is one of the sports where specialization in a specific position is the most marked. Most importantly, one position, namely the setter, involves greater decisional responsibility than other positions. They frequently have to decide to which hitter they need to set the ball to in order to maximize the chances of scoring. Therefore, the general goal of the thesis is to compare experts with important decisional responsibility with experts from the same domain having less responsibility. Two studies with specific goals address this question. The first study is based on the Recognition-primed decision model (RPDM). The RPDM explains how experts make decisions when facing situations from their area of expertise. The aim of the study is to analyze, with respect to the model, how setters differ regarding anticipation process compared to other experts and non experts. Twenty-five setters, 36 other players and 19 controls viewed 50 volleyball video sequences: 10 services, 10 receptions, 10 sets, 10 attacks and 10 blocks. Sequences stopped 120 ms before ball contact and participants had to explain their anticipation process by answering four questions verbally: “What would you do facing this situation?”, “What were you looking at?”, “What were you thinking of?” and “What led you to this decision?”. Answers were transcribed verbatim. Scores were computed, where points were awarded depending on verbalization number and relevance with the model. Results revealed that setters scored generally higher than other players and controls. Other players also had higher scores than controls. Results support the validity of the RPDM to explain how volleyball players with different levels of decision-making responsibilities differ. Discussion suggests the validity of the RPDM and to use it as a tool to identify key decision-makers. The second study considers more frequent perceptual-cognitive measures, namely eye movement and anticipation efficacy. The same participants as in the first study (in addition to a supplementary setter and a control) watched the same video sequences. Sequences stopped 120 ms before ball contact and participants, whose eye movements were recorded, had to predict the ball direction. Results revealed that setters and controls made more but shorter fixations than other players. However, both expert groups made better predictions than controls. Dynamic analysis of eye movement over time shows that players’ upper body is a most relevant attentional cue right before all types of ball contact, as both expert groups attend this specific area of interest more than controls. Results are discussed in terms of decision-making responsibilities to identify key decision-makers in volleyball and in general. Results point towards specific perceptual-cognitive abilities found in setters and support the idea that setters constitute a subgroup of experts, although they are not better than other players in anticipating the game.Taken altogether, the results from both studies indicate that setters can be considered a subgroup of expert volleyball players, as they present with a different way of gathering visual information and explaining their anticipation process. These results suggest that decisional responsibility could be considered as a factor indiversifying athletes’ perceptual-cognitive skills. It is recommended that in-situ studies be carried out, both in volleyball and in other sports where a position with decision-making responsibility can be identified (e.g., quarterback in American football).

Full textThe research outlined in this thesis falls within the context of professional football club management, where establishing a balance between human and financial aspects is essential for long-term viability of sports organizations. In football management, the traditional methods of player selection have historically guided decision-making processes within clubs. This strategic decision-making process, which is often subjective and uncertain, can have a significant impact on the club's financial, economic and sporting situation. As football is increasingly becoming a data-driven sport, there is a growing recognition that traditional approaches need to be complemented by scientific methods based on artificial intelligenceomenclature{AI}{Artificial Intelligence} and multi-criteria decision makingomenclature{MCDM}{Multi-Criteria Decision Making} approaches to optimize player selection and improve both sporting and financial performance. It is becoming increasingly important to find an optimal balance between sporting success and financial performance to optimize the results of a specific entity: the football club.In this respect, the main purpose of this thesis is to propose a model that combines machine learning techniques with multi-criteria analysis methods to improve the efficiency and objectivity of the football player selection process, while taking into account financial and managerial considerations. Our first contribution is to prioritize the physical, technical, tactical, and behavioral criteria of players using Random Forest, Entropy, and CRITIComenclature{CRITIC}{CRiteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation}algorithms. The second contribution is to rank players based on their performance using the TOPSIS method. To validate these contributions, we designed a decision support system that assists the sports decision maker by proposing players in order of performance. Our model does not aim to replace coaches but rather to integrate subjective and objective evaluations to provide a thorough understanding of the factors influencing sporting and managerial performance, thereby improving the accuracy of player selection. As football moves towards more data-oriented approaches, the combination of AI and MCDM can further optimize player selection processes by leveraging the benefits of objective data analysis and subjective expertise. The results obtained show the effectiveness of our approach in improving the performance of football teams, especially when supported and promoted by emotional intelligence, which refers to the manager's ability to recognize the substantial state of the players
