Full textThe selenoprotein glutathione peroxidase 2 (GPx2) is a hydroperoxide-reducing enzyme that is mainly expressed in the gastrointestinal epithelium, especially in the crypt base were the proliferating cells reside. GPx2 expression is maintained even when the selenium supply is limited, which indicates that GPx2 might have an important function in these cells. Indeed, GPx2 knockout (KO)-mice have an enhanced rate of apoptosis in the crypt base. Therefore one aim of this study was to further elucidate the physiological function of the GPx2. Isolated colonic crypt base epithelial cells of selenium deficient GPx2 KO-mice were found to have a higher caspase 3/7 activity than wild type (wt) cells. Moreover they exhibited an enhanced susceptibility for oxidative stress. Thus GPx2 protects the proliferative crypt base cells of the intestine, especially when the selenium supply is limited. Additionally an enhanced expression of tumor necrosis factor α and an enhanced infiltration of macrophages were detected in the colon of GPx2 KO-mice in comparison to the wt. These effects were observed on a selenium deficient (-Se) and -adequate (+Se) diet, but could be prevented by feeding a selenium supplemented (++Se) diet. Accordingly, GPx2 KO-mice have a basal low grade inflammation. This underlines, that GPx2 has an important anti-inflammatory function in the intestinal epithelium. Selenium deficiency is linked to an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. In a mouse model of colitis-associated colon carcinogenesis, GPx2 had anti-inflammatory and thus anticarcinogenic effects. However, also procarcinogenic functions of the GPx2 have been observed. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse the role of GPx2 in a model of non-inflammation triggered, sporadic colon carcinogenesis induced by azoxymethane (AOM). In preneoplastic lesions of wt mice, an enhanced expression of GPx2 in comparison to the normal mucosa was frequently observed. An upregulation of GPx2 expression has also been described in human colon carcinogenesis. GPx2 KO mice had less tumors (-Se and ++Se) and less preneoplastic lesions (-Se, +Se) than wt mice. Accordingly GPx2 promotes colon carcinogenesis in the AOM-model. Eight hours after AOM-application, a higher rate of apoptosis was observed in the mid-crypt region of the colon of GPx2 ko mice in comparison to wt mice in the –Se and +Se groups, but not in the ++Se group or in the crypt base. Thus GPx2 might act procarcinogenic by preventing the elimination of cells with DNA-damage in the tumor initiation stage. Similarly, the enhanced GPx2-expression in preneoplastic cells could promote tumorigenesis by protecting these cells from oxidative stress, apoptosis or antitumor immunity. This effect might be enhanced by other selenoproteins like GPx1 or thioredoxin reductases that have also been reported to possess procarcinogenic properties and it might be closely related to the regulation of the redox state of tumor cells. In wt mice, the selenium content of the diet turned out to have a rather U-shaped effect on colon carcinogenesis. In the –Se and ++Se groups, wt mice tended to have more and larger tumors than in the ++Se group. In conclusion, GPx2 protects the proliferating cells of the intestinal crypt base, but it could also protect proliferating transformed cells and thus promote sporadic, AOM-induced colon carcinogenesis. In contrast, GPx2 acted anticarcinogenic in a model of colitis-associated colon carcinogenesis due to its antiinflammatory properties. Thus, the role of GPx2 in colon carcinogenesis depends on the underlying mechanisms, especially on the involvement of an inflammation.

Full textThis dissertation comprises three essays on the role of information and monitoring intermediaries in capital markets. The first essay investigates whether different short sellers vary in their selection of target firms using observable firm characteristics. Results show that hedge funds and investment managers on average prefer larger and younger firms, whereas banks focus on firms with fewer restatements and a higher leverage. The second essay provides descriptive evidence on how firms respond to activist short seller reports and how these responses are associated with outcomes for the targeted firms. It finds that the response rate increases substantially when the report is accompanied by significantly negative abnormal returns and when the short sellers provide new evidence which is consistent with the idea of short sellers acting as information intermediaries. Not responding is associated with a less negative stock price response when the report is released and fewer adverse outcomes. The third essay shifts the attention to Monitoring Trustees who assist in the supervision of banks that have received state aid in the European Union during the last financial crisis. It explores in a hand-collected sample the characteristics and duties of these newly implemented monitors and it studies the role of these supranational monitors and the banks’ reporting behavior. Results suggest that these additional supervisors can influence the banks financial reporting transparency and reporting behavior when mainly loan loss reporting and restatements are accounted for. The second essay has been published in the Journal of Accounting Research (https://doi.org/10.1111/1475-679X.12356).

Full textThis work aims to understand the effects of family educational practices effects on the child's gender development. We study the influence of the parental involvement, the gender role conformity and the parental stereotypy on two components of gender role attainments. From a socio-cognitive point of view, we examine the gender social identity (apprehended by gender consistency, the knowledge of gender roles and gender schema flexibility) and the gender self concept (apprehended by the playmate preferences, the favourite activities and the playing behaviours) of the pre-school child. We have observed 23 children and their parents with several instruments. A questionnaire composed by 12 behaviours scales, the bsri and the psai have allowed us to reach the degree of involvement, conformity and stereotypy of the father and mother. Concerning the 57-months-old child, we have adapted two american instruments: the serli and the ssm. We have also made an ethopsychological observation of the playing behaviours of the child with stereotyped and cross-stereotyped toys. Contrary to our hypothesis, parental conformity and stereotypy help the child for early disengagement from gender stereotypes. We can observe the effects of social asymmetry between the two gender groups. But the relation between family educational practices and gender identity is also to be found in the child's need of conformity. When the parental landmarks of the gender differences are not clear, the child will construct his own reference norms about his belonging to a gender group

Full textTell me what sex you are, i would tell you how you are or either how you should be, since all women look like only one woman and all men look like only one man. One is tender, the other is intelligent, one is irrational, the other is reasonable, one is inferior, the other is superior. . . In fact, it's difficult to conceive the human being outside of these very definite binary categories. And this how appears our inability to understand and to accept the other (the other sex) every time that he behaves differently of what has been previously agreed as being his kind. However, this narrow correspondence established between male sex and masculine kind on one side and female sex and feminine kind of another side, causes us a lot of harm. Isn't regrettable to deny to men the right to be tender, soft, sensitive and loving ? and isn't regrettable to deny to women to be free, independent, intelligent and creators ? ar-rawd al-atir fi nuzhat al-hatir is one of these works that treats the masculine and feminine identities, while drawing a woman's model and of a man model. But it is necessary again that the man confesses publicly what he is and what he really wants, at that moment only, we can dream of a better world, a world where the kind doesn't have a sex

Full textLiterature tends to assume implicitly the existence of a biological determinism to explain the differences between men and women entrepreneurs. Our aim was to study the representations of business performance based on the notion of sex (biological sex: female & male), and gender (the social sex: feminity & masculinity). Could masculinity and/or femininity reveal differences in representing business performance between men and women entrepreneurs? Three quantitative studies, based on ANOVA and t-Test, were used to analyze data collected by questionnaire from 244 entrepreneurs. A qualitative study was used to model data collected during individual interview of six entrepreneurs. We found that differences in representing business performance cannot be revealed neither by the distinction of category of sex (male / female), nor by gender categories (Male, Female, Androgynous, Undifferentiated) as defined by the Bem Sex Role Inventory. Also, we confirm that collective representations of the performance by the entrepreneurs have evolved and go well beyond the simple pursuit of economic profit, and can be more closely related to current social values

First, election campaigns introduce to female or male role. They turn women to outsiders whereas men embody experienced politician. Then, selection leads women to lowly work. Finally, they try to highlight their position by claiming a female ethical code. However, to stay or improve their status, they must learn male behaviors too. Nevertheless, they do not wholly forgive female politician ethical code

Full textThe present thesis whose problematical emerges from the existence of the socialized terms of sex on the Lebanese social scene, where it aims to find a contribution of its scholar system in the formation of sexual identity among the child students in the primary cycle. So the main objective is to explore the ways in which the scholar institution treats the students of both sexes, that gives rise to their obvious role in the edification of the gender in the students. In this respect, the principal hypothesis supposes that such an identity construction can’t be effected evenly with girls and boys in the classes. At the beginning, the methodic proceedings of the study, based on a pre-inquiry via semi-directive talks conducted with the directors of 18 scholar establishments in south-Lebanon, have revealed in those responsible, the presence of sexual mentality. Further note that during a series of 225 observation sessions of 11 primary classes, made successively in 4 months, we could affirm the presence of teacher-student differentiated effects related to the sex of the latter, while noting an inculpation of teacher’s practices, for he/she often predetermines according to his sex, the mode of interacting with a child, a preliminary discrimination can therefore be deduced. In addition to that, a content analysis of 6 maths manuals belonging to the classes concerned, has been done, it verifies that these books motivate clearly a stereotyped representation of the society, where loom up sexually differentiated positions witnessed by their contents. On the other hand, the majority of the observed classes seems to enhance sexualized socialization, which is shown by many variables during apprenticeship sessions, this may lead in certain manners to generalize the masculine universalism and to strengthen therely the domination of the strong sex, through hierarchical terms linked to the sex of the student

For the suppliers pursuing the competitive advantages; they would like to know what kind of the relationships (e.g. retaining simple a buying selling, signing a long-term constract, or forming a strategic alliance )should be construited between the suppliers and the buyers. No matter what kind of the relationship been established, it must achieve to care for the enterprise’s profit and the customer satisfaction at the same time. From the viewpoint of the supply chain management, the buyer and the seller should act as partners to minimize the total system cost and meet the customer needs Therefore, the purpose of the this study aims to discover the acting role of relationship structure in trust. Based on the previous reseaches related to trust, we proposed a model with trust as intermediate variable to analyze how four constructs (or latent variables ),i.e communication, intention of investment, dependence, and contract, in influence the cooperative attitude of buyers. Relying the uniform purchasing of senior high school in Taipei as the empivical case, the study utilized the questionnaire to collect the data, and structural equation modeling (S.E.M) method to validate the theoretical model. The results of this research can be summarized as follows: communication demonstrated a significant positive relationship association with cooperative attitude of two parties, customer need, and intention of investment in the recognition of the customer relationship; the buyer depend on the supplier can affect the trust of buyer had the positive relationship; a significant positive relationship between dependence of buyer and supplier contract implement; contract signing can not affect the trust of buyer; a direct positive relationship between intention of investment of supplier and trust of buyer; and a significant positive relationship between trust and cooperative attitude of two parties.

This study explores relationships among insurance female sellers’ multiple roles and role conflict from spillover theory. It has four purposes:1) to examine the relationship between insurance female sellers’ multiple roles and role conflict;2) to examine the relationship between multiple roles, job satisfaction, family satisfaction and subjective well-being;3) to examine the relationship between role conflict and job satisfaction, family satisfaction and subjective well-being;4) social support modulate the relationship between role conflict and job satisfaction, family satisfaction, subjective well-being. The research used the survey of multiple roles, role conflict, JSS, family satisfaction, social support and CHI(short). The subject of this study were insurance female sellers in Taiwan. A sample of 460 insurance female sellers volunteered to participate in the study. The researcher used the statistical techniques as Pearson r, t-test, one-way ANOVA and LSD post hoc to test and examine research hypotheses. The major findings are : 1)There is a part relationship between multiple roles and role conflict. 2)There is no relationship between multiple roles and job satisfaction. 3)There is a relationship between role conflict and job satisfaction. 4)There is a relationship between multiple roles and family satisfaction. 5)There is a relationship between role conflict and family satisfaction. 6)Multiple roles, role conflict, job satisfaction and family satisfaction correlated with subjective well-being. 7)Social support modulate the relationship between role conflict and job satisfaction. Implications of the findings for insurance companies or some companies are discussed.

Doucet, Christine. "The gender pay gap among university professors: the role of individual and organizational determinants." Thèse, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/6935.
Full textThis case study examines the various sources of explanation of the gender pay gap among professors at a large Canadian research university. It comprises three articles. The first article analyzes gender differences in “market supplements” using data from a survey of professors conducted in 2000. The correspondence analysis produces a two-factor solution in which the second axis clearly opposes faculty who receive market supplement to those who do not. Gender is strongly related to this factor, with the female category on the side of the axis associated with the absence of market supplement. The results of the logistic regression confirm that field of specialization, frequency of external research contracts, faculty members’ values and attitudes towards remuneration and seniority within rank are all related to the award of market supplements, as hypothesized. However, women were still almost three times less likely than men to have been awarded market supplements after controlling for these relationships. Overall, the results suggest that within a collective bargaining context, reindividualization of the pay determination process — notably, the payment of market supplements to faculty — may reopen pay differences by gender. The second article uses administrative data for years 1997 to 2006. We estimate the respective contributions to the gender pay gap of four pay components: base pay, promotion to full professor, access to market supplements and Canada research chairs as well as the amounts received. These are characterized by various levels of formalization. This allows testing the hypothesis that the magnitude of gender differences in pay varies with the extent of formalization of pay components. We also determine how gender differences on each pay component vary according to the relative representation of female faculty members within units. We find some evidence that the magnitude of gender differences varies with the degree of formalization in remuneration practices. We also find that, other things being equal, pay is lower in units with a high proportion of females. The last article examines the mechanisms that may lead to gender differences in access to ‘market supplements’ among professors. The process of awarding pay in excess for the amounts provided for in a collective agreement are examined based on interviews with 17 administrators at all hierarchical levels and in various academic units. Results suggest that gender differences in the likelihood of receiving an award may be related to specific features of the award process and to an unequal distribution of awards to units with strong female representation. Overall, the results show that the gender pay gap among professors at this university is not entirely accounted for by differences in the individual characteristics of male and female professors. The analysis reveals that the pay gap resides in gender differences in access to market supplements and Canada research chairs (CRCs) and, to a lesser extent, to the full professor rank. No difference is found on base pay or on the amounts of pay supplements received, whether they are “market” premiums or supplements associated to a CRC. Furthermore, pay tends to be lower in units where female representation is highest. The observed gender differences in access to market supplements could be due to organizational processes that reduce the likelihood of awards to women. There are several reasons why female faculty members are particularly disadvantaged in this award system. Gender differences in the propensity or ability to negotiate are alleged (and assumed) by some of those negotiating. More limited access to information about supplements reduces the likelihood that women will pursue them. Chairpersons, who are mostly males, may allow gender bias to influence their evaluations of faculty members, perhaps because they tend to favor others like themselves. It may also be that chairpersons from the units where women are better represented do not have access to information about market supplements or that disciplinary traditions make them reluctant to request them.
