Abstract:
In seismic European countries most of the residential building stock is highly energy-intensive and earthquake-prone because it was built before the enforcement of the most recent energy and seismic codes. Furthermore, this stock often shows a low architectural quality due to poor maintenance and/or construction and design deficiencies: for all these reasons, it needs deep renovation, but the use of common energy and seismic upgrading techniques is often unsustainable in terms of costs, work duration, and occupants’ disturbance. Therefore, new integrated, affordable, fast, and low-disruptive renovation actions are strongly needed. This study proposes an innovative energy, seismic, and architectural renovation solution for reinforced concrete (RC) framed buildings, based on the addition of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels to the outer walls, in combination with wooden-framed panels. The two panels integrate insulation and cladding materials in order to improve the energy performance and the architectural image of the renovated building. Moreover, the CLT panels are connected to the existing RC frame through innovative seismic energy dissipation devices. In case of an earthquake, these devices in combination with the CLT panels reduce the drift demand of the building, preventing or reducing structural damages and consequent repair costs. In particular, this paper investigates the technical feasibility, the energy efficiency, and the architectural enhancement of the proposed retrofitting system. To this purpose, dynamic thermal simulations were conducted on a typical multi-story residential building from the 1960s, located in Catania, Italy. The results indicated that this retrofitting technique considerably improved the energy performance of the selected building, with a reduction of the global energy demand up to nearly 60%. The presented study is part of a larger research project aimed at also investigating, in a further stage, the seismic performance achievable by the above-mentioned renovation solution.

Abstract:
Features of renovation of built-up areas are considered. The main difficulties in carrying out the renovation process are identified. The concept of the constraint factor of the building is defined. Methods. A method for analyzing and assessing constraints for selecting optimal organizational and technical solutions for the renovation of territories is proposed. Results. An analysis algorithm is proposed, based on the consideration of the constraint factor as an array of actions of individual “objects of influence” on the corresponding “subjects of influence”. Conclusion. Сonducting such an analysis will provide the most effective and optimal organizational and technological solutions reflected in the relevant sections of the renovation project in high-rise construction (development of a construction master plan, preparation of calendar and network work schedules). The implemented rational version of the design solution ensured the reduction of the prime cost and the reduction of the terms of the preparatory works for the renovation of housing construction projects taking into account seismic uncertainty. Renovation is one of the varieties of this reconstruction of high rise construction.

Abstract:
Existing buildings can reach a performance enhancement and extend their nominal service life through renovation measures such as seismic rehabilitation. In particular, when buildings have almost exhausted their service life, seeking an optimal solution should consider whether costs and environmental effects are worthwhile, or new construction is preferred. In this paper, a methodology to consider seismic hazard into probabilistic approaches for life-cycle analyses is presented considering the possibility of structural enhancement over an extended building lifespan. A life-cycle-based decision support tool for building renovation measures is developed and applied to a selected case study. Unlike standard “static” analyses, which in this work show shortcomings by underestimating impacts of vulnerable buildings, such an approach brings out environmental and economic advantages of retrofit measures designed to improve the structural performance.

Abstract In the framework of the ongoing four-year EU-funded innovation project called e-SAFE (“Energy and seismic affordable renovation solutions”), several solutions for the energy and seismic deep renovation of reinforced concrete (RC) framed buildings in the European countries are going to be developed and demonstrated. These solutions address both the energy performance of the building envelope and the heating and cooling of the indoor spaces, and aim to be prefabricated, customizable, low-disruptive and sustainable in order to boost the decarbonisation of the largely inefficient European building stock. This paper presents the main features of the e-SAFE solutions and the results of a preliminary analysis to verify their effectiveness and compliance with European legislation and standards. The outcomes will be useful for the design and demonstration stage, by identifying issues that need to be tackled.

Abstract:
The phases that must be completed so that a building damaged in earthquake that struck Zagreb on 22 March 2020 can be renovated and strengthened to the required level of seismic resistance are presented in the paper. All phases are therefore presented, starting from the rapid and then detailed inspection, and continuing with preparation of the structural condition assessment report, preparation of renovation design and, finally, ending with realisation of work with expert supervision. A special attention is paid to structural analysis that is conducted using a nonlinear static method based on displacements, the so called pushover analysis, which is considered to be one of the most appropriate methods for seismic analysis of existing masonry structures. All procedures conducted in the scope of this renovation were realised in accordance with legislation that entered into force after the earthquake.

The need to reconcile seismic strengthening and other code-related issues with historic preservation objectives poses a variety of challenges for the design professional. A thorough knowledge of the local, state and national regulatory contexts, along with an understanding of two underlying principles, equivalency and life safety, provide a necessary framework for undertaking renovation projects. Two case studies involving important Los Angeles historic buildings, the Wiltern Theater and Grand Central Square, illustrate the complexities of code compliance with respect to preservation and programmatic goals, specifically in the areas of seismic retrofit, fire-life safety and disabled access. Successful historic preservation projects can benefit from a thorough pre-design phase and an experienced project team. Modifications and refinements to regulatory procedures, particularly at the local level, could also significantly facilitate restoration, renovation and re-use of historic buildings.

To revitalize a historical building, the Taipei Camphor Factory, a major renovation is being coordinated by National Taiwan Museum. As part of the project, a seismic assessment was conducted to ensure the structural safety of the building. A three-dimensional finite-element analysis was carried out based on material data collected from the field, and it was found out that both the as-is building and the current retrofit plan would not provide adequate seismic capacity. To resolve this problem, an shear walls scheme was configured and seemed to yield a much better performance.

Abstract:
In Italy, as in many other European countries, a large part of the real estate was built before the issue of restrictive regulations regarding seismic resistance and energy efficiency. Consequently, most existing buildings show inadequate structural and energy performance. However, although a combined renovation is highly recommended, and despite relevant tax incentives which are currently available, the building retrofit market is still struggling to take off. In fact, the lack of information and/or awareness of the involved parties and the consequent difficulty for condominiums to approve the retrofit works are often insuperable obstacles. A Decision Support System (DSS) may help in evaluating and comparing different combined renovation scenarios, thus promoting the regeneration of the building stock. This study presents a new methodology for the selection of the optimal building renovation scenario through a DSS, which is conceived as a tool to allow a quick, simple and effective identification of the best retrofit strategy, based on a priority scale (e.g., costs and duration of intervention, disruption to the occupants, environmental sustainability, energy savings, thermal comfort, structural safety). For this purpose, the DSS calculates suitable performance indices and relative costs. Finally, the system proposes a ranking of the best combined retrofit scenarios. This research study is still ongoing and next steps will deal with the calibration of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:
AbstractA life cycle framework for a new integrated classification system for buildings and the identification of renovation strategies that lead to an optimal balance between reduction of seismic vulnerability and increase of energy efficiency, considering both economic losses and environmental impacts, is discussed through a parametric application to an exemplificative case-study building. Such framework accounts for the economic and environmental contributions of initial construction, operational energy consumption, earthquake-induced damage repair activities, retrofitting interventions, and demolition. One-off and annual monetary expenses and environmental impacts through the building life cycle are suggested as meaningful performance metrics to develop an integrated classification system for buildings and to identify the optimal renovation strategy leading to a combined reduction of economic and environmental impacts, depending on the climatic conditions and the seismic hazard at the site of interest. The illustrative application of the framework to an existing school building is then carried out, investigating alternative retrofitting solutions, including either sole structural retrofitting options or sole energy refurbishments, as well as integrated strategies that target both objectives, with a view to demonstrate its practicality and to explore its ensuing results. The influence of seismic hazard and climatic conditions is quantitatively investigated, by assuming the building to be located into different geographic locations.

In the framework of the ongoing EU-funded innovation project called e-SAFE (energy and Seismic Affordable rEnovation solutions), several solutions for the energy and seismic deep renovation of reinforced-concrete (RC) framed buildings in the EU countries are going to be developed and demonstrated. One of these solutions makes use of cross laminated timber (CLT) panels connected to the existing RC frame through specifically designed dampers to increase the seismic and energy performances of the existing envelope. This paper aims to preliminary assess the hygrothermal performance of such CLT panels when applied to various typical wall structures under different climate conditions in Italy through numerical simulations carried out according to the EN 13788 Standard and considering various indoor vapor production classes. Results show that the most problematic existing wall structures are uninsulated concrete walls, for which a risk of surface condensation and mold growth is predicted in all climate zones because of their low thermal resistance (U-value of 3.55 W·m-2·K-1), followed by uninsulated solid brick walls (U-value of 1.81 W·m-2·K-1). The application of CLT panels is found to not only significantly improve the thermal behaviour of the walls, but also to eliminate any surface and interstitial condensation issues in all climate zones.

In the 21st century, the most used word was sustainability. That is because one of the main problems of our century is the climate change, which is caused mostly by the carbon emissions. On the other hand, the carbon emissions are cause by the use of energy. The reduce demand of the energy consumption Would impact in the climate change. The most part of the energy use comes from the buildings. the new buildings, because of the new European energy regulations, are very effective in their energy use. the main problem of using that energy efficiency comes from the existing buildings. according to the BPIE. existing buildings contain a huge potential in the energy savings. Therefore, it is a must in retrofitting these buildings regarding their energy use. The focus of the thesis lies of finding different measures for a total renovation of the existing building stock. These measures can help improve the energy and the seismic performance. interventions will be done in the building insulation in the building technical then and also in the building masonry resisting wall. also, will be discussion about the possibilities of integrating the two types of retrofits. it must be mentioning this building, live a low-income population, therefore the retrofit measures must fulfil the minimum requirements, while being cost-effective. there are several retrofit measures that have been adopted another country and have been successful. yet, there are several difficulties and barriers in improving the energy and seismic perform answer of building. such can be the technical measures, ownership problems, government politics and mostly costs. Retrofitting existing buildings is one of the realities of the European Union. the most part of these existing buildings are multi-family buildings. Before also the seismic improving performance is very important, since in an event of an earthquake it would cause a lot of Damages, including human lives. Albanian is a third world country, therefore the main issue for the retrofit will be the economy aspect.

Abstract:
AbstractThe construction industry, as a main energy consumer and a foremost contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, has been undergoing a “green revolution” in the recent years. Sustainability has become a prominent issue, therefore a framework for including energy efficiency and sustainability in the design of buildings is badly needed. Sustainability is the core of the European Renovation Wave strategy and of the New European Bauhaus initiative.A design approach, named SAFESUST (SAFEty and SUSTainability) has been proposed at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, able to address at the same time structural safety, energy and environmental performances. The output of this approach is a unique parameter, expressed in monetary terms, which helps in identifying the most appropriate design solution.More recently, the Joint Research Centre, under mandate of the European Parliament, has activated a European Pilot Project named “Integrated techniques for the seismic strengthening and energy efficiency of existing buildings”. The project is expected to put forward a simplified holistic approach to improve simultaneously the seismic safety and energy efficiency of the existing European building stock and to stimulate the use of integrated solutions. The Joint Research Centre is also conducting a Preparatory Action for the definition of a labelling strategy for the implementation of the New European Bauhaus initiative.

<p>The installation of supplemental viscous damping devices can effectively reduce the seismic responses of the engineering structure, so as to reduce the construction quantity of the renovation project. This paper addresses the impacts of supplemental viscous damping devices on the seismic responses of the construction extended renovation projects under the multilevel decomposition design model frame. Firstly, the multilevel decomposition design model of the seismic design of engineering structures is introduced. Secondly, the typical driving factors of the construction extended renovation projects are discussed. The impacts of supplemental damping on the seismic response of the structure are then investigated from the perspective of response spectrum. This paper takes a 250m ultra-tall structure as engineering case to analyse the multilevel decomposition design model, the driving factors of the construction extended renovation projects and the impacts of supplemental damping on the seismic responses of the structure. The results show that the supplemental viscous damping can effectively reduce the construction quantity of renovation projects.</p>

Abstract:
Vernacular architecture has become a full part of our cultural heritage, since it constitutes evidence of our material culture and is tied to specific historical/geographical contexts. This type of ‘lesser’ heritage has withstood various transformations over time, whether negative transformations due to abandonment, or positive transformations due to expansion and renovation work on historical buildings or their simple adaptation to new living conditions. Thus, vernacular architecture often presents intrinsic vulnerabilities resulting from all the transformations it has undergone. The presence of this type of vulnerability within the vernacular built heritage also constitutes an even greater risk for buildings located in seismic areas, as this could lead to an increase in the level of damage due to an earthquake, often with irreversible losses. Achieving a good level of knowledge about the vulnerability of historical buildings in seismic areas is therefore important for their adequate preservation. This not only allows preventive maintenance to be planned, but also because when an earthquake occurs, this type of knowledge would allow decisions to be made with greater awareness regarding where to intervene first, and to more quickly identify where safety interventions for the most vulnerable buildings must be realised. As is well demonstrated by the collapses caused by the earthquakes that hit Central Italy in 2016, the possibility of promptly securing damaged historical buildings is of fundamental importance for conserving the built heritage damaged by an earthquake. To this end, the contribution describes some of the main instruments available in Italy for technicians and functionaries that intervene during a seismic emergency to secure the architectural heritage, with suggestions as to how these tools can be strengthened.

<p>Built over 100 years ago, 1789 Massachusetts Avenue NW was one of the earliest luxury apartment buildings in Washington, DC, and was home to several distinguished individuals including millionaire industrialist and art patron Andrew Mellon. In 1976 the Building was purchased and became home to The National Trust for Historic Preservation. A new owner purchased the building in 2013 and proposed long-needed repairs and modernizations. To achieve the goals of this renovation, a new penthouse was added above the existing roof, and a full floor was added below the original historic building footprint.</p><p>Among several unique aspects of this project, one which makes it note-worthy from a preservation engineering perspective, was the design approach used to achieve seismic code compliance for the lateral system of the building. Given the level of Structural Modification, the project was considered a Level 3 Alteration in the IEBC. The historic façade is integral with the original steel frame of the building and absorbs lateral forces. The degree of fenestration and composite wall construction makes its contribution difficult to quantify. Ignoring the contribution of historic facades can lead to overly conservative design of new lateral systems. Conversely, assuming that the existing facades can resist seismic forces without careful consideration can lead to damage of the historic finishes and unintended consequences in the building envelope performance. Silman performed a series of nonlinear analyses as part of a 'performance based' approach, more common to the west coast, to benefit from the contribution of the existing historic masonry on the lateral resistance of the building while quantitatively limiting damage to the historic fabric under the seismic events. The resulting design achieved an optimal balance reducing the lateral demand on the new components of the building while providing the quantified protection of this important historical resource.</p>

Abstract:
The conference introduces one of the international workshops we organized in 2014-15 about urban regeneration. The selected theme for the Ragusa Workshop concerned the regeneration of the historic centre of Ragusa Superiore, the “new town” built on a higher plateau after the earthquake which destroyed the old city in 1693. The historic centre, shaped with a compact gridiron plan, embeds several late-baroque monuments for which was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The denser part of this fabric, made of an extensive grid of small blocks, each composed by tiny lots, has gradually proved inadequate to accommodate the new housing needs, forcing residents to look elsewhere for more sustainable conditions. The strict regulation imposed on the whole historic centre has strongly contributed to freeze this condition, by preventing the necessary renewal process. The consequence has been a gradual depopulation of the old town that led to a large urban and social decay. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the Workshop aimed to test “on-site” strategies for urban renewal that could suggest integrated solutions, to these several issues: preservation of architectural and urban character of the site, building and public space renovation, upgrading to current housing and circulation needs, creation of safety areas for both seismic and hydrogeological risks. In the conference we shall also introduce 3 Diploma Projects presented by our students in 2015 and 2016 in our school of Architecture in Milan Polytechnic University.

Abstract:
<p>Great architects and structural engineers such as Berg (1870-1947), Maillart (1872-1940), Freyssinet (1879- 1962), Torroja (1899 -1961), Nervi (1891-1979), Candela (1910-1997), Isler (1926-2009) and many others have designed recognized works of art in their discipline. They conceived extraordinary concrete spatial structures, that are located mostly in Europe and represent a unique legacy. It is important to raise awareness of this heritage, define the criteria for preserving it and begin the process of its renovation and rehabilitation.</p> <p>While concrete has become a 20th century emblem, much of the world’s heritage from this period is unrecognized or undervalued, and therefore it is at risk and in need of analysis and protection. Innovative technologies and solutions are needed that contribute to the successful reuse of modern concrete built heritage. Indeed, such structures are plagued by significant deterioration and most of them are in urgent need of retrofitting and/or radical refurbishment. In other words, there is a need to bring some of these buildings back to life, while respecting the spirit of their original characters, through new technologies for long-term conservation that can maintain an adequate level of structural performance. Achieving this goal would produce substantial economic impacts through activities such as restoration, maintenance, and cultural industry.</p> <p>The keynote lecture, more specifically, focuses on the condition assessment, monitoring and preservation of 20th century architectural heritage characterized by a complex spatial structural design. The service life of civil and cultural heritage concrete spatial structures is typically thought to range from 10 to 200 years, but in practice the service environment plays a pivotal role in sustained durability. Indeed, the collapse of Polcevera Viaduct in Genoa has raised strong concerns on the durability of concrete structures conceived at that time. The scientific community has once again underlined the important role played by maintenance and continuous structural health monitoring in avoiding these disastrous events. In order to demonstrate a correct approach to condition monitoring of concrete spatial buildings and bridges, some important experiences are described that were recently obtained at the Polytechnic of Turin on the structural analysis, seismic vulnerability and condition assessment for iconic 20th century heritage buildings.</p>
