Abstract:
Seed response to grinding in a hammer mill or extrusion through a pellet die was determined. Less than 1% of spotted knapweed, sulfur cinquefoil, timothy, and alfalfa seeds were intact after grinding to pass through a 1-mm screen. Intact seeds of all tested species except sulfur cinquefoil were able to germinate after grinding. Extruding unground alfalfa seed through a die to make hay pellets decreased viability 60 to 63%. After grinding and extrusion through a grain pellet die, 53% of intact alfalfa seeds in the pellets were viable. These data demonstrate that feed pellets can contain viable weed seeds.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop a procedure to determine seed moisture content from intact pelleted seeds. Samples of `Sentinel' onion and `Salinas' lettuce were pelleted by the following companies; Asgrow, Germains (Seed Systems), Harris Moran, Incotec, Peto and Seed Dynamics. Physical characteristics of the various pellets were quantified including weight, volume and density. Measurements were made on intact pellets and densities ranged from 0.84 to 1.67 g/cc. Seed drying curves were obtained on the different pellets under controlled environmental conditions. Pellets were first equilibrated at 85% RH, and then dried at 25C and 18% RH. In general drying rates were similar among pellet types within crops. With regards to seed moisture content determination, neither the electronic moisture meter, based on measuring capacitance, nor oven methods were able to accurately measure seed moisture from intact pellets. Measurement of the head space RH from pre-equilibrated intact pellets (water activity) resulted in an accurate method to assess seed water status for all samples. The actual seed moisture content could be determined by using the moisture isotherms for each seed lot at a given temperature.

Abstract:
The use and improvement of pelleted seed technology has greatly expanded in the last 15 years. Vegetable and flower seeds are pelleted to improve the singulation and planting placement in the field and greenhouse. Improved planting placement increases final-stand establishment, crop uniformity, and decreases seed and production costs. The commercial history of pelleted seed in the U.S. started after WWII with the development of the clay pellet by Filtrol Inc. Seed tablets and seed tape technologies were also developed but faded from the industry with the advent of better pelleted products. Current technology consists of a “splitting” seed pellet that allows for improved oxygenation. Improved technology also allows for pellet weights that can be tailored to meet the planting requirements of different species and planting systems.

Abstract:
The association of radiolabelled taurocholic acid with the solid fraction of a faecal fermentation mixture was measured. A human faecal inoculum was incubated with [24-14C]taurocholic acid and several non-starch polysaccharide sources (pectin, wheat bran, ispaghula (Plantago ovata) husk and seed), glucose or a substrate-free control. Portions of fermentation mixture were taken at 0, 3, 6, 21 and 24 h and centrifuged to acquire a supernatant fraction and a pellet containing the fermentation residue. 14C was measured in supernatant fractions and pellets at all time points. Volatile fatty acids (VFA) were measured at 0 and 24 h to confirm bacterial growth. Radioactivity in the pellet increased over time for all substrates. Glucose resulted in the greatest incorporation of taurocholic acid into the pellet, followed by pectin. At 24 h the proportion of the total radioactivity found in the pellet was 92% for glucose, 79% for pectin, 60% for wheat bran, 59% for ispaghula seed, 53% for ispaghula husk and 26% for the control (mean of duplicates). Glucose and pectin produced the greatest quantity of VFA at 24 h. VFA production was highly correlated with radioactivity in the pellet (r 0·976, P <0·005). These results suggest that the bile acid binding capacity of a faecal culture mixture may be strongly influenced by the fermentability of the available substrate and hence related to bacterial metabolic activity.

Abstract:
Abstract The possibility of using shattered pellet injection after the thermal quench of an ITER disruption in order to deplete runaway electron (RE) seeds before they can substantially avalanche is studied. Analytical and numerical estimates of the required injection rate for shards to be able to penetrate into the forming RE beam and stop REs are given. How much material could be assimilated before the current quench (CQ) becomes too short is also estimated. It appears that, if hydrogen pellets were used, the required number of pellets to be injected during the CQ would be prohibitive, at least considering the present design of the ITER disruption mitigation system (DMS). For neon or argon, the required number of pellets, although large, might be within reach of the ITER DMS, but the assimilated fraction would have to be very small in order not to shorten the CQ excessively. This study suggests that other injection schemes, based for example on small tungsten pellets coated with a low Z material, may be worth exploring as an option for an upgrade of the ITER DMS.

Masters by Coursework thesis, Murdoch University, 2019. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/49774/.

Abstract:
Current methods of mine rehabilitation have a high failure rate at the seedling emergence stage due to the limited availability of topsoil and the low water holding capacity of alternative growth media such as waste materials and tailings. Extruded seed pellets, formed by extruding soil mixtures and seeds into pellets, can potentially increase soil water availability through enhanced soil-seed contact and improve seedling emergence in arid systems. I tested a modified extruded seed pelleting method in a three-factor field experiment in a purpose-built mine rehabilitation research facility in the Pilbara region of northwest Western Australia. The aims of the experiment were to assess (i) native seedling emergence and establishment from modified extruded seed pellets and; ii) the physico-chemical and microbiological changes that occur with seedling emergence from pellets. I tested three native plant species and the experimental factors were pellet soil mixtures, with or without Triodia pungens biomass as an organic amendment and rainfall regimes. Results suggests trade-offs among responses. Pellets made with a 50:50 blend of topsoil and waste material had the highest seedling emergence, while 100 % topsoil pellets had lower emergence probably because of hardsetting. Triodia pungens survived to the end of the experiment but Indigofera monophylla and Acacia inaequilatera did not. Adding Triodia biomass amendment inhibited Triodia seedling emergence but increased soil microbial activity and could therefore stimulate recovery of soil function. Pellets preserved seed viability and topsoil microbial communities during the growing season and therefore show potential as a means to inoculate rehabilitation sites with both seeds and microbes. Overall, modified extruded 50:50 seed pellets show promise for rehabilitation of keystone species Triodia and beneficially, make use of ‘waste’ material. Further research is needed to improve pelleting methodology for other species, and to test the applicability of the method at scale, in this and other arid land ecosystems.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the relationship of deconstruction to psychoanalysis, and reads the Genet column of Glas in terms of the deconstructibility of ‘the deciding discourse of castration’, as Derrida puts it. The fleece that Genet imagines Harcamone wearing in The Miracle of the Rose takes centre stage, as much as Genet’s flowers. The fleece is both garb and pelt, at once a talismanic scalp, a part that has been brutally cut away, and a covering used to shield or shelter what is vulnerable or exposed. It is both something stolen, and a protective barrier against loss. To get ‘fleeced’ already carries a double and ambiguous set of possible meanings, then, and Derrida puts it to work in the interests of a double-sexed deconstruction of castratability. If the erection cannot ‘fall’ without re-elevating the entire edifice or column of that phallogocentrism of which castration would paradoxically form an uncastratable part, Derrida’s insertion of a deconstructive ‘hole in erection’ exposes to a powerfully deciphering reading this tale of castration’s uncastratability. The chapter reads into the Hegel column of Glas precisely this deconstructibility of a ‘deciding discourse of castration’, notably in terms of the Hegelian interpretation of Antigone’s politics.

Abstract:
In his “Great Commandments” Jesus places love at the heart of the virtuous Christian life. Yet, the task of trying to cultivate Christian love might seem impossible from the start. For, a prominent Christian tradition understands love (charity) to be a gracious gift from God, not a virtue we can acquire through practice. Moreover, love seems to involve emotions that are outside of our control. In response to these worries, Pelser explains how it is possible to work toward the cultivation of Christian love, even though it is an infused, emotional virtue. He develops Søren Kierkegaard’s insight that Christians can contribute to the cultivation of love in one another’s hearts by “presupposing” love in each other. Pelser concludes by explaining how certain practices that combine loving action with contemplative reflection can help till the ground of our hearts so that love might be cultivated in us by God and others.

Abstract:
Colonic diverticula are herniations of mucosa through the bowel musculature. They are seen most often in the sigmoid and descending colon, with a prevalence of up to 65% over the age of 80 in European populations, but they are uncommon in African and Asian countries, where the prevalence is 0.2%. A lifelong diet deficient in dietary fibre is associated with their development, but it is not known why some diverticula become symptomatic. A rise in intradiverticular pressure may play a role in perforation. Diverticula are usually discovered incidentally, but symptoms which are attributable to diverticular disease include colicky abdominal pain and bloating, often accompanied by a change in bowel habit with the passage of broken, pellety stools after considerable straining. All patients with such presentation should be investigated to exclude rectal or sigmoid carcinoma. Treatment is with reassurance that there is no serious underlying disease, a high-fibre diet, and—for patients with pain—antispasmodics such as mebeverine. Elective resection is indicated in the few patients who have repeated severe attacks....

Abstract:
This chapter explores the numerous and heretofore overlooked physical, personal, and psychological areas of overlap between Mo Testa in Dykes to Watch Out For and Linus van Pelt in Charles Schulz’s Peanuts. Many of Mo’s signature traits and hallmark qualities are ones she shares with Linus: from her insecurity and intellectualism to her philosophical nature and her role as reflective commentator for the group. Indeed, even Mo’s penchant for striped clothing can be seen as taking a sartorial cue from Linus, who is always clad in a t-shirt with strikingly similar horizontal stripes. While Bechdel never identified Schulz as an inspiration for her work nor the Peanuts gang as a model for her DTWOF crew, the suggestive echoes between Mo and Linus seem too numerous to be merely coincidental. Exploring the similarities between Mo and Linus reveals a compelling kinship between Bechdel’s work and one of the most well-known strips in the history of American comics, while it also sheds new light on the relationship that DTWOF has to its socio-cultural milieu.

Abstract:
Trichoderma species, a cosmopolitan fungi, present in all types of soil, manure, and decaying plant tissues that can degrade domestic waste relatively quickly without emitting bad odors. Trichoderma is recognized worldwide as potential fungal bio-control agents for the management of various foliar and soil-borne plant pathogens, highly compatible with sustainable agriculture and play major role as a component of integrated pest management. Bio-control agents are an antagonism and eco-friendly approach for managing plant diseases. Trichoderma as bioagent area effective not only against soil-borne plant pathogens, but also against nematodes without any adverse effect on beneficial microbes. Trichoderma is capable of growth promotions in crops. There are two major mass production methods of Trichoderma spp. viz., solid state fermentation and liquid state fermentation. In solid, fungus is grown on various cereal grains, agricultural wastes, and byproducts, and these products are used mainly for direct soil application to suppress the soil-borne inoculums. In a liquid state, Trichoderma is grown on media such as molasses and yeast in deep tanks and fermentation can be made into different formulations such as dusts, granules, pellets, wettable powders. As seed-treating agents or bio-priming agents, Trichoderma formulations can be successfully used against several soil-borne diseases caused by Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium and Sclerotium, spp. in several crops.

Full text
Abstract:
A concentration step is frequently required after a clarified solution of the protein has been obtained, in order to aid subsequent purification steps. This is particularly important when the protein is obtained in culture medium from cells (e.g. bacteria or tissue culture cells). Concentration of the protein solution results in a decreased volume, as well as a higher protein concentration. Clearly a smaller volume of solution is easier to handle in subsequent steps, such as precipitation or loading onto a chromatography column. Higher protein concentration minimize protein losses by non-specific adsorption to container walls or column matrices. In addition many subsequent purification steps require a minimum protein concentration to be effective, for example, precipitation is more efficient at concentrations above 100 μg/ml, whilst for adsorption chromatography (e.g. ion exchange or affinity) the concentration of protein must be greater than the dissociation constant. Concentration is achieved by removal of water and other small molecules: (a) By addition of a dry matrix polymer with pores that are too small to allow entry of the large protein molecules (Section 2). (b) By removal of the small molecules through a semi-permeable membrane which will not allow the large molecules through (i.e. ultrafiltration, Section 3). (c) By removal of water in vacua (i.e. lyophilization, Section 4). Precipitation can also be used to concentrate proteins if the pellet is redissolved in a smaller volume, and in addition often results in some degree of purification of the protein of interest. However, as mentioned above precipitation is more effective if the total protein concentration is above 100 μg/ml (see Section 6). Two-phase aqueous extraction can also be used to concentrate the protein, with an associated degree of purification (see Section 7). This is one of the simplest and quickest methods of concentrating solutions of proteins, requiring minimal apparatus. A dry matrix polymer, such as Sephadex, is added to the protein solution and allowed to absorb the water and other small molecules; the pores within the matrix are too small to allow the protein to be absorbed.

Abstract:
Colonic diverticula are herniations of mucosa through the bowel musculature. They are seen most often in the sigmoid and descending colon, with a prevalence of up to 65% in people over the age of 80 in European populations. They are uncommon in African and Asian countries, where the prevalence is only 0.2%. A lifelong diet deficient in dietary fibre is associated with their development, but it is not known why some diverticula become symptomatic. Elective resection may be indicated in the few patients who have repeated severe attacks. Complications of diverticular disease include diverticulitis, pericolic abscess formation, peritonitis, intestinal obstruction, haemorrhage, and fistula formation. Acute diverticulitis typically presents with pain and tenderness over the left lower abdomen, and the patient may have pyrexia, malaise, anorexia, and nausea. Treatment is with rest, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and analgesia. Resection of the sigmoid colon may be necessary if symptoms fail to resolve or recur, or for patients with complications (peritonitis, fistula, obstruction). Overall, percutaneous drainage, antibiotic treatment, and expectant policies have reduced the need for both acute and elective surgical treatment.

Abstract:
Of all the geological phenomena that make an impression on the general public, volcanic eruptions must be the most spectacular. The sight of incandescent lava being spewed into the air or creeping down hillsides is a regular standby of television documentaries dealing with the natural world, and the invocation by Old Testament writers of fire and brimstone in their portraits of hell indicates how vivid is the image of volcanic activity that has persisted throughout recorded history. How significant, though, are erupting or exploding volcanoes as killers? Many years ago I paid a standard tourist visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum, the Roman towns destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. I was duly impressed by the exhumed streets and buildings, but what caught my imagination most were the plaster casts from Pompeii of human beings found in recumbent or prone positions, or huddled against a wall, at the locations where they had been enveloped almost instantaneously by incandescent ash. These had been produced during the nineteenth-century excavations by a team of archaeologists led by an ingenious professor, who poured plaster of Paris down holes in the volcanic rock occupying the rooms of Roman villas. The rock was then removed. Good examples of these plaster casts can be seen in the Naples Museum, and picture postcards are freely available for tourists visiting the Bay of Naples area. They make disturbing mementi mori to send to your friends and relatives. It is not known how many died as a result of the Vesuvius eruptions: perhaps not too many, as most inhabitants had time to escape. This was not the case, though, with the eruption in 1902 of Mont Pelée in Martinique, during which no fewer than 30,000 inhabitants of St. Pierre – ‘the Paris of the West Indies’ – were killed as what is called a nuée ardente smothered the town. There were only two survivors. The term nuée ardente is normally translated as ‘glowing cloud’ or ‘glowing avalanche’, though some of the more frivolous students I have taught have preferred their own mistranslation: ‘ardent nudes’.

Abstract:
Variety of vegetable raw materials is used for energetic needs: logging and wood processing waste, agricultural production by-products: straws as well as specially cultivated trees, tall grass, rapeseeds, triticale and other herbaceous plants. In the performed scientific work, preparation and opportunities of use of energetic needs are estimated for non-conventional energy plants (elephant grass, orchard grass, common mugwort and fibrous nettle), technological parameters of processing these seeds and pressing into granules are explored, biometric and physic-mechanical properties of finished pellets are evaluated, and their resistance to impact forces is evaluate. Having examined humidity of pellets, it was found that maximum moisture content was in pellets of elephant grass and nettle – from 13.1 to 13.2%, while the smallest – in orchard grass pellets 10.0%. The largest density of non-conventional energetic pellet density was orchard – 983.8 kg m-3 DM (dry matter) and common mugwort – 926.7 kg m-3 DM, and density of elephant grass pellets was the lowest – 619.3 kg m-3 DM. Results on resistance to deformability of non-conventional energetic crops granules indicate that the highest resistance against external forces is a pellet made of common mugwort: they decompose to 110.03 N force. Pellets of other plants disintegrate to smaller external force: fibrous nettle granules – to 90.6 N, orchard – to 67.3 N force. Elephant grass pellets have the smallest resistance to deformation and decompose more quickly (at 20 N). The research results show that pellets made of elephant grass are of the lowest quality; due to this, it is not recommended to use these plants in the form of pellets.

Abstract:
Natural composites have been important materials system due to preservation of earth environments. Natural fibers such as jute, hemp, bagasse and so on are very good candidate of natural composites as reinforcements. On the other hand regarding matrix parts thermosetting polymer and thermoplastic polymer deriver form petrochemical products are not environmental friendly material, even if thermoplastic polymer can be recycled. In order to create fully environmental friendly material (FEFM) biodegradable polymer which can be deriver from natural resources is needed. Therefore poly(lactic acid) (PLA) polymer is very good material for the FEFM. However, PLA is very brittle polymer, so that polymer chemists have been made the efforts to make tough PLA. In this paper Jute/PLA composites was fabricated by injection moldings and mechanical properties were measured. It is believable that industries will have much attention to FEFM, so that injection molding was adopted to fabricate the composites. Long fiber pellet pultrusion technique was adopted to prepare jute fiber-PLA pellet (Jute/PLA). Because it is a new method which is able to fabricate composite pellets with relative long length fibers for injection molding process, where, jute yarns were continuously pulled and coated with PLA resin. Here two kinds of PLA materials were used including the one with mold releasing agent and the other is without it. After pass through a heated die whereby PLA resin impregnates into the jute yarns and sufficient cooling, the impregnated jute yarns were cut into pellets. Then Jute/PLA pellets were fed into injection machine to make dumbbell shape specimens. In current study, the effects of temperature of heat die i.e. impregnation temperature and the kind of PLA were focused to get optimum molding condition. The volume fractions of jute fiber in pellet were measured by several measuring method including image analyzing, density measurement and dissolution methods. And the mechanical property were investigated by tensile and Izod testing. It is found that 250 degree is much suitable for Jute/PLA long fiber pultrusion process. Additionally the jute fibers seem much effective to increase the tensile modulus and the Izod strength. That is to say, the addition of Jute fiber in PLA, the brittle property can be improved.

Abstract:
In order to improve nuclear reactor’s performance and safety, a new-type fuel, Inert Matrix Dispersion Pellet (IMDP) with greatly enhanced thermal conductivity was studied. In this paper, the pellet was developed by Spark Plasma Sintering Technique (SPS), which brings an improved thermal conductivity compared with normal method and exhibits fully dense SiC matrix with a higher TRISO volume in kernel of pellet. Thermal-physical properties of the IMDP from room temperature to 1400 °C were investigated. The thermal conductivity improved 1100% at room temperature and 974% under 1000°C when TRISO volume is 40%, which behave much better than traditional UO2 fuel. The thermal diffusivity reduced and heat capacity increased at different TRISO volumes, linearly implied stable geometry at high temperature. From CT test we can see an intact structure of uniform TRISO granules. For comparison, modeling thermal conductivity is analyzed by FEM, which shows lower than measured data, indicating an optimized technology of this new method. Advantages of SPS will be discussed as well.

Abstract:
When the pellet-cladding mechanical interaction (PCMI) occurs in a reactivity-initiated accident (RIA), the states of stress and strain in the fuel cladding varies in a range depending on the friction and degree of bonding between cladding and pellet. Japan Atomic Energy Agency has developed the improved Expansion-due-to-compression (EDC) test apparatus to investigate the PCMI failure criterion of high-burnup fuel under such conditions. In this study, the failure behavior of cladding tube was investigated by using the improved EDC test apparatus. Cold-worked, stress-relieved and recrystallized Zircaloy-4 tubes with a pre-crack were used as test specimens: this pre-crack simulated the crack which is considered to form in the hydride rim of high-burnup fuel cladding at the beginning of PCMI failure. In the EDC test, a tensile stress in axial direction was applied and displacement-controlled loading was performed to keep the strain ratio of axial/hoop as a constant. The data of cladding deformation had been achieved in the range of strain ratio of 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 and pre-crack depth of 41–87 micrometers. Failures in hoop direction were observed in all the tested samples, and a general trend that higher strain ratio and deeper crack depth lead to lower failure limit in hoop direction could be seen. Different crack propagation mode was observed between recrystallized and stress relieved and cold worked samples, which might be due to the difference in microstructure caused by the final heat treatment at the fabrication of cladding.

Abstract:
Abstract Many piezo-electrical crystals such as quartz are grown hydrothermally in highly pressurized cylindrical autoclaves. In hydrothermal crystal growth of quartz, quartz pellets are put in the bottom of an autoclave where the temperature is higher and the quartz dissolves into an aqueous solution. The nutrient is then brought to the upper part of the autoclave by natural convection of the solution due to a temperature difference and deposited onto the seed crystals at a lower temperature. A good understanding of such a bulk flow is therefore essential for the control of the rate of crystal growth and the quality of the grown crystals. Due to a large dimension of the system and a large length to diameter ratio (10 to 30), complex flow patterns with strong turbulence are expected. This paper presents the first numerical analysis of turbulent natural convection in industry-size autoclaves with various aspect ratios. A simplified, two-dimensional axisymmetric model that does not consider the seed and the porous raw material bed has been developed. The Wilcox κ-ω turbulent model is employed to describe turbulent transport. Using a CFD package, CFX, numerical results have been obtained for cases with aspect ratios ranging from 2 to 30. Results show typical two counter-flow cells in both the bottom and upper parts of the autoclave. Strong turbulent interaction is observed in the region near the baffle opening where the bottom and upper two flow cells meet, although there is no cross flow in the average flow field. Detailed analyses and discussions are presented to characterize the bulk flow in the upper chamber under various aspect ratios, and their effect on crystal growth.

Abstract:
Based on the characteristics of the oxide redox pair system Co3O4/CoO as a thermochemical heat storage medium and the advantages of porous ceramic structures like honeycombs and foams in heat exchange applications, the idea of employing such ceramic structures coated with or manufactured entirely from a redox material like Co3O4, has been implemented. Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) experiments have demonstrated that laboratory-scale Co3O4-coated, redox-inert ceramic foams and honeycombs exhibited repeatable, cyclic reduction-oxidation operation within the temperature range 800–1000°C, employing all the redox material incorporated, even at loading levels exceeding 100 wt% loading percentages. To further improve the volumetric heat storage capacity, monolithic porous ceramic foams made entirely of Co3O4 were manufactured, together with analogous pellets. Such porous structures were also capable of cyclic reduction–oxidation, exploiting the entire amount of Co3O4 used in their manufacture. In this perspective, “open” porous structures like the ones of ceramic foams seem to have significant advantages in addressing problems associated with cyclic expansion-contraction that could be detrimental to structural integrity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Nuclear fuel cladding is an integral part of nuclear reactors and choosing the proper material is imperative to the design of a reactor. In this paper, the neutronic properties and the fuel performance of a 17 × 17 Westinghouse Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) assembly using ceramic matrix composites (CMC) Silicone Carbide (SiC) as a cladding material is investigated. The material analysis is compared against traditional Zircaloy-4 cladding used in a 17 × 17 Westinghouse PWR assembly. The codes used in the analysis are the Michigan Parallel Characteristics based Transport (MPACT) code coupled with CTF, the North Carolina State University version of the Coolant Boiling in Rod Arrays Two Fluids (COBRA-TF) code, and the fuel performance code BISON as well as the uncertainty analysis code DAKOTA. Additionally, annular geometry for the fuel pellet is modeled to assess its merit compared to ordinary CMC SiC or traditional Zircaloy-4 claddings. It is found that on the neutronics side, the CMC SiC shows lower achievable U-235 enrichments required to reach the same burnup and effective neutron multiplication factor as Zircalloy-4 claddings. These results are an advantage that can be seen in the economic cost analysis done and additionally from the reactor operation point of view. Also, it is found that the different criteria of safe operation of Westinghouse PWR assemblies like the plenum pressure, the fuel-cladding contact pressure, the peak fuel temperature, and the fission gas release criteria are all achieved with CMC SiC with some criteria having larger design margins than of the Zircaloy-4 cladding. Furthermore, a critical heat flux (CHF) study shows that CMC SiC has even larger thermal margins than the ordinary Zircaloy-4 cladding, resulting in a more profitable fuel cycle due to the greater amount of power that the fuel pins can be operated at. An uncertainty quantification for the CHF Ratio (CHFR) is also done to assess the largest magnitudes of importance that affect the CHFR calculated.
