Abstract:
This volume collects contributions written by eight authors interested in different research areas in East Asian Studies. Divided into a Japanese and a Chinese section, it explores topics ranging from East Asian literatures to contact linguistics and sociology. The Japanese section contains four essays about contemporary Japanese cinema and different aspects of Japanese modern and contemporary literature (i.e. the literary motif of kame naku, ‘crying turtle’, yuri manga, and tenkō bungaku, the ‘literature of conversion’). The Chinese section concerns two main macro-topics: on the one hand, it focuses on issues related to cultural contacts between Italy and China; on the other hand, it deals with Chinese migration to Italy, highlighting socio-historical aspects and cultural production.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume brings forefront research in emotion regulation and how processes underlying emotion regulation have a bearing on the field of child and adolescent psychopathology. The book shows continuity by initially introducing the topic of emotion and its regulation and then narrowing its scope, analyzing the role emotion regulation plays in specific disorders while critically examining current assessment and treatment strategies. This 20-chapter volume consists of four sections. The first section includes an introduction to the field of emotion regulation in adolescents, touching upon the cultural, social, biological and developmental issues related to this topic. Section two discusses several psychological disorders impacting adolescents such as anxiety, depression and conduct problems, while also discussing the underlying role emotion regulation plays in the development, maintenance and propagation of these disorders. The third section focuses on the role of emotion regulation in specific behaviour/populations, such as children of abuse and neglect and adolescents who engage in nonsuicidal self-injury. The final section conceptualizes emotional regulation as a transdiagnostic process and discusses innovative approaches to treatment that arise when viewed through this lens.

D'Alessandro, Roberta, Irene Franco, and Ángel J. Gallego, eds. The Verbal Domain. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198767886.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The structure of the VP, its complexity, its semantics, its function, and the universality of the heads that it contains are a fascinating puzzle. A lot of progress has been made: this volume features cutting-edge research on the verbal domain, while tackling the problem of the nature and structure of the vP-VP domain. It includes some chapters based on papers presented at the “Little v” workshop which was held at Leiden University on October 25–26, 2013. The volume is divided into three main sections, representing the areas in which contemporary debate on the verbal domain is most active. The first part, entitled Root and Verbalizer, includes four chapters discussing the setup of verbal roots, their syntax, and their combination with other functional heads like Voice and v. This part focuses on the V head. The second section, Voice, discusses the content and necessity of a Voice head in the structure of a clause, and whether Voice is different from v. Voice was originally intended as the head hosting the external argument in its specifier, as well as transitivity. This section explores its relationship with “syntactic” voice, intended as the alternation between actives and passives. The third section, Event and Argument Structure, is dedicated to event structure, inner aspect, and Aktionsart. The main issues it tackles are the one-to-one relation between argument structure and event structure, and whether there can be minimal structural units at the basis of the derivation of any sort of XP, including the VP.

Jerryson, Michael. Buddhist Paths to Violence. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190683566.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter charts potential Buddhist pathways to violence through doctrine, logic, and heuristics. The first section introduces examples from the Buddhist doctrine that provide spaces to justify violence. In the second section, doctrinal arguments find a way into Buddhist logic, as evidenced by the historical case studies of wars, such as Japanese Buddhists during the Russo-Japanese War of Sri Lankan Buddhists throughout the 26-year civil war against the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam. Finally, the third section draws upon the work of psychologist Daniel Kahneman and his study of availability heuristics to examine the way Buddhists disavow some lives from their precept of nonviolence.

Full text
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter covers pagan and early Christian authors of the period 50–250 ce, known as the “second sophistic.” The first section focuses on the Certamen, Athenaeus and Plutarch, considering their revisions of Hesiodic wisdom and the contemporary forms of scholarship on his poems. The second section uses Lucian to showcase “Hesiod parodied” before discussing Aelian, Babrius, and the Sibylline Oracles. Points treated include the cross-referencing of Hesiodic poems and the dominance of certain Hesiodic passages, such as Hesiod’s initiation by the Muses, the “Two Roads,” and the “Myth of the Races,” in appropriations of Hesiod for new (especially rhetorical) projects. Finally, “Hesiod assaulted” is discussed in view of the Christian apologists, in particular Clement of Alexandria and Theophilus, who attacked Hesiod’s inconsistency and immorality but, like Lucian, co-opted aspects of his narratives into their own.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes the taxonomy of diatoms, one of the most abundant and diverse (morphologically and genetically) phytoplankton groups. They are responsible for at least 25% of global carbon dioxide fixation and 20% of net primary production. It covers their life cycle, general morphology, and ecology and distribution. It includes a section that indicates the systematic placement of the taxon described within the tree of life, and lists the key marine representative illustrated in the chapter (usually to genus or family level). This section also provides information on the taxonomic authorities responsible for the classification adopted, and recent changes which might have occurred, and it lists relevant taxonomic sources. The final section describes and illustrates the genera or families in more detail by highlighting specific representatives on identification cards.
