Abstract:
Over the past fifty years, (financial) capitalism has brought about an enormous growth in wealth. Millions around the world have been lifted out of poverty. However, the downsides of the present global economic constitution are rapidly becoming evident as well. Rising inequality, soaring debt levels, and repeated cycles of boom and bust have proven to be some of its key characteristics. After the 2008 crisis brought the financial system to the brink of collapse, new regulations, stricter supervision, higher capital requirements, and ethical codes were introduced to the sector. Today we find ourselves in the middle of another economic boom. Yet one pressing question remains: has anything changed? Have the (necessary) repairs fixed the flaws in the system? Or do we require even more fundamental reforms? This volume builds on the observation that society has co-evolved with the financial sector. We cannot simply claim that 'finance' was the sole instigator of the 2008 crisis. Society itself has become financialized; the process of replacing relations, structures of trust and reciprocity, by anonymous and systemic transactions. The volume poses vital questions with regard to this societal development. How did this happen? And more importantly: is change possible? If yes, how? This volume contains 21 essays on the themes mentioned above. Authors include Jan Peter Balkenende, Wouter Bos, Lans Bovenberg, Govert Buijs, and Herman Van Rompuy. A recommendation by Dutch Minister of Finance Wopke Hoekstra is also included.

Abstract:
The Russian government’s digital propaganda seeks to insulate Putin’s leadership from any domestic challengers and aid in his foreign policy ventures, which increasingly set Russian interests off against the West. Yet the propaganda tools, including trolls and bots, were conceived and perfected in the pockets of political competition and a globally integrated market economy still left in Putin’s Russia. This chapter discusses how the vibrant Russian blogosphere, left unattended by the government and laser-focused on taking over the traditional media, created the demand for sophisticated online propaganda and censorship tools. It also discusses how the advanced Russian online media and tech sector helped to meet this demand. It concludes with a preliminary report on the detection and exposure of government propaganda online, which could be applicable beyond Russia.

Abstract:
This chapter provides evidence on the extent of child labor in Tunisia, its determinants and its impact on schooling. It shows that 5.87 percent of the target population are involved in work, a rate which may increase in the future if policymakers and stakeholders do not take adequate measure to protect children’s rights to a decent life and better education. In this chapter, and using TLMPS data (2014), we show the “atypical” picture of Tunisia regarding this phenomenon. First, child labor is both rural and urban: the impact of poverty on child labor is more pronounced in urban areas than in rural ones. Second, most children are involved in the service sector and third, poverty does not explain child labor. We provide evidence that working-children are more likely to repeat school-grade and to lag-behind. Likewise, working-children are more at risk to drop out, with girls more affected than boys.
