Abstract:
This thesis, based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork in the US, Russia, France and Australia, focuses on technology use in second homes and its implications for technology design. I highlight the unexpectedly strong sense of nostalgia, for place as well as for richer relationships, felt in second homes around the world, and the ways in which second home residents use technology to shape space and behavior to reinforce this link to an imagined past. I show that the transition between main and second homes, with its rituals of preparation and transition between physical locations, allows residents to assume different identities in the two locations. These identities are based on location rather than role, and their second home identities allow them to showcase a part of themselves which does not flourish in the city. Lastly, I articulate the ways in which technology's logic is shaped by work environments, and how this logic does not always mesh well with the "messiness" of home lives. I further show that the choices of technology placement and acceptance in the home are a function of both how a technology is perceived (as aligned with work or leisure, for example) and of the behaviors residents value in the home, and an anthropologically informed understanding of these behaviors can, and should, influence product design choices.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to highlight the second home sector in Sweden and Denmark, in a comparative study of regulations for the second home market, and residence requirement. Two attractive second home island destinations is being compared in Ven, Landskrona and Gudhjem, Bornholm. The study addresses issues such as the local effects of a regulation of the second home market get at a local level, and the effects generated by deregulation, as well as local people's opinions about second home regulation in a popular second home area in southern Sweden.  This has been examined using a mix between qualitative method and quantitative methods, and the study is based on six semi-structured interviews from informants from Ven, Bornholm, and Gudhjem which has been analyzed throughout a thematic analysis. In addition to the interviews, diagrams from the Central Bureau of Statistics of Sweden and Statistics Denmark, and various real estate websites, and a field observation from Ven and Gudhjem will be presented. The result shows that show that the discussion on residence requirement has been going on for a long time in Sweden and Ven, but the local organizations found more disadvantages than advantages and are now looking in to other solutions, while other locals believes that there are more advantages with a residence requirement. In Denmark it’s revealed that there is recently started discussion between municipal decision-makers and local organizations about the regulations, and if it should be abolished or not. It turns out that the directions of the local effects being positive or negative depends a lot on the resort's contemporary expertise in local organizations, the population basis and to what extent the resort attracts people to stay there permanently for a living. The results also implies that some regulations in Denmark will not be deregulated, while it is still an active political discussion in Denmark.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate policies regarding second home planning in the Swedish municipalities. To do so content analysis was conducted on the regulation document called översiktsplan (translated into English layout plan, land-use plan or sketch plan) of all 290 Swedish municipalities. The ´översiktsplan´ is a document containing directions, policies, guidelines and recommendations for land use in the municipality. Swedish law dictates that all municipalities must have such a document.   This study addresses the phenomenon second homes and second home tourism in the perspective of the destination, in this study represented by the Swedish municipalities regulation document called översiktsplan. Previous research has been taken into account, both concerning Sweden, the Nordic countries and countries in different parts of the world, to describe the phenomenon. The study aims to describe municipality´s characteristics and to analyse the geographical placement of the municipality. This is done by plotting a map over Sweden with the municipalities classified depending on their degree of policies regarding second homes. Then, a comparison with the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions classification of Swedish municipalities 2017 was made to analyse the characteristics of municipalities having policies for second homes.   Of the 290 (100 %) Swedish municipalities there are 217 (74,8 %) that have made policies and preparations regarding second homes and these directions are shown in the översiktsplan. The result shows a clear pattern within the Swedish municipalities regarding directions, policies, guidelines and recommendations concerning second homes. Municipalities containing a minor urban area that accommodate less than 40 000 inhabitants and geographically placed nearby an urban area containing more than 40 000 inhabitants, nearby a ski resort or by the shoreline do have a higher preparation and planning regarding second homes.

Abstract:
In Sweden, people can only be registered as a citizen in one municipality while at the same time, almost half of the Swedish population have accesses to a second home. Second home owners is therefore not visible in the public statistics which causes problems for municipalities when planning since this mobile population seems to be immobile. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of second home tourism on a municipal level and how these effects are handled by a municipal organization. The municipality of Tjörn, a municipality consisting of islands on the countryside on the Swedish west coast, is used as an example to illustrate this subject. The study is based on one group interview and one personal interview with municipal workers with different professions to examine which effects they identify from the second home tourism and how they handle this in their professions. The results shows that the second home tourism in the municipality of Tjörn concerns economical, ecological, physical and social aspects plus aspects concerning the identity of the place. This in turn demands a knowledge and information from the affected municipality to be able to handle the effects in a sustainable way.

Abstract:
While the government in Norway strives for equity in health and access, factors of urbanization, modernization, and sustainable development may discourage advancement in rural municipalities. In the rural hinterlands, often where the mountain belt resides, this is known to be caused by declining employment-rates in typical rural industries like agriculture and forestry. A consequence of this has been outmigration and lower numbers in the permanent population in most rural municipalities (Rye et al., 2011). Simultaneously, there is an ongoing trend of more second homes, particularly in rural areas, ascribed to second-home owners living in the cities. More second homes are evident from the country's growth of second homes on par with residential buildings since the 1970s and the existing second-home agglomerations around the major cities (Arnesen et al., 2011). The increased technical standard in second homes, from traditional cottages to high standard recreational homes with electricity- and water-utilities has also increased the year-round frequency of use (ibid). And while the political narrative is urbanization, this increased frequency of use in second homes may support a record of significant rural redistribution with second homes and domestic migration at its core (Ellingsen, 2017). The seasonal displacement from the cities to the recreational hinterland affects supply-demand ratios to important amenities i.e. casualty clinics, ambulance stations, and hospitals. This thesis investigates the current disparity using a GIS-approach.

Steer-Fowler, John Martyn William. "Caravan second homes : an empirical study of consumer behaviour towards a depreciating property asset." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/394.

Full text
Abstract:
This research draws upon a combination of qualitative interviews and quantitative questionnaire data to investigate the role static caravans play within second home consumerism. Fundamentally it seeks to explain why people buy such a fast depreciating property asset. Results suggest how irrespective of their income two thirds of such consumers show a passionate loyalty towards their static caravan and have little regard for alternative forms of retreat they could afford. Clearly there are significant reasons beyond price which explain such investment. At their broadest static caravans proved to be desirable for reasons of escape, salvation, control, enhancement and opportunity but a number of further concepts began to emerge which extend current understanding of second homes. Within the caravan, space and time were found to hold greater value, and by virtue of their compactness life was considered to be organized, tidier, simplified and as a consequence more enjoyable than that at the principal home. Many of the alluring features which were inherent in their design were discovered to create an environment in which living was perceived to be miniaturised, adventuresome and a fairytale. Remarkably the lack of space and permanence were not perceived to be shortcomings but attributes, providing further forms of freedom and connection with nature. Purchases were seen to be driven as much by an attachment with the space static caravans provided, and memories of previous occasions enjoyed in them, as any desire for location. Through utilising chi-square tests with both factor and cluster analysis the research has been able to identify four types of consumer and the effects of eight statistically significant variables upon their profiles and behaviour. The character traits of purchasers were found to be particularly high in levels of agreeableness, and their perpetual yo-yoing between the caravan and home proved to be so regular, and the community they engendered so familiar, touristic characteristics were little evident. Indeed this research questions whether such consumption can continue to be considered touristic, and provides a fresh insight into understanding the need for a second home. Regardless of environment what purchasers yearned was a leisurely existence at home without any sense of guilt. What static caravans were found to provide was permissible behaviour; a utility within which 'at leisure' could be transacted. For the first time this research quantifies the ownership of static caravan second homes and draws together a number of findings to explain the success they enjoy, to finally offer some resolve to the repeated calls for such study.

Barnett, Jenny Elizabeth. "A place in the country : the contribution of second homes to North Devon communities." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14821.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines the sustainability and participatory objectives of the UK’s planning system in a geographical context. It aims to explore the relationships between communities and place, and the connections between national government, local governments and communities in planning processes and outcomes. It also considers the role of planning in shaping places and communities, and how planning endeavours to include communities in decision-making through encouraging participation in community activities. This thesis argues that there is a gap between planning policy and rhetoric and the implementation of policy within specific community contexts. The research is a piece of collaborative research conducted with the planning department at North Devon Council (NDC). Through developing an original empirical case study of data from parishes within North Devon, planning’s sustainability and participatory agendas are examined through the framework of second homes considered a distinct yet related form of tourism (Jaakson, 1986). The research unpicks popular understandings of second homes through quantitative and qualitative research and argues that there are nuanced existences and experiences of second home properties, compounding the difficulty of defining these properties that produce both non-permanent residents and semi- permanent tourists. Exploration of the socio-economic contributions of second homes within host communities suggests that second homes have potential to contribute unsustainable traits, particularly social impacts, to host communities while also having potential to bring positive, predominantly economic, contributions. The empirical research demonstrates that notions of community from resident and policy maker perspectives illustrate that place is not necessary to understanding or experiencing community but has a key role in framing both policy and North Devon residents’ perceptions of community. Through examining the most recent round of democratic renewal in the planning system, issues of power and responsibility within planning functions are reviewed. It argues that the Conservative – Liberal Democrat Coalition neighbourhood planning obligations reveal a dichotomy between community desire for power and the realism of heightened responsibility.

Yang, Kaihan. "Spatial-existential authenticity and the production of heterotopia : the case of second homes in China." Thesis, University of Derby, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/622898.

Full text
Abstract:
China has achieved extraordinary economic growth since its profound social, political and economic reformation in 1978. Housing and tourism are two manifestations of such growth. However, problems related to the development of housing and tourism have become increasingly severe: environmentally sound rural areas are now the battlefield for the ostensible economic advancement of both sectors; the supposedly beneficial local communities in such areas end up as the sufferers of worsened living conditions; the policymakers, who are self-claimed leaders of the development in benefits of the local communities, are de facto heavily dependent upon the sales of land for tax generation. Under such circumstances, second homes - the intersection between tourism and housing - have emerged as a hot topic for industry participants, researchers and policymakers. The existing body of knowledge, in what is largely Western dominated second homes research, suggests that the key theories, assumptions and conclusions cannot be adapted to explain the development model in China. This is because of China’s unique scale, patterns, and dynamics of economic and socio-political linkages. This research therefore theorises second homes in China based on key space and tourism concepts. This thesis conceptualises second homes on an actual site in China named The Aqua, which is a tourism cluster intentionally constructed around the idea of second homes. The thesis examines the actor groups that are involved in the making of The Aqua, as well as their practice, representation and experience with it. Also, in order to uncover the potential impacts of the Aqua, this research investigates how justice is recognised and practiced between different actor groups. The outcomes of this research include: 1) a new model that visualises the power relations between different actor groups that are involved in the making of the Aqua, 2) a new theory building on Foucault’s heterotopia to help explain why the Aqua was produced as the representation of the imagined Western township, 3) new terms of apotopia and limbotopia as dismissive narratives to unwanted circumstances of tourism place-making, 4) a fresh perspective to examine the potential impacts of second homes through the lens of justice, instead of the traditional dualistic thinking of second homes as the curse or the blessing.

Stroja, Jessica. "War Zones to New Homes: Displacement, Encampment, and Resettlement in Post-War Queensland." Thesis, Griffith University, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/389147.

Full text
Abstract:
The mass displacement of refugees that occurred following the Second World War was the largest refugee crisis the world had ever experienced. The resettlement of these Displaced Persons (DPs) and families was a complex process for those who sought lives removed from the trauma of wartime Europe. Australian involvement in the Displaced Persons Resettlement Scheme included the resettlement of numerous individuals and families across the country. Yet, the density of settlement varied greatly between states, and Queensland’s post-war migrant and refugee intake was the lowest of the nation. The resettlement conditions for Displaced Persons in Queensland reflected a stark contrast to resettlement experiences in other Australian locations. Employment of Displaced Persons in Queensland was frequently structured around seasonal work projects, and was not sustained by industry in the same manner as many interstate locations such as Sydney and Melbourne. The lack of dedicated Reception and Training Centres for migrants and Displaced Persons in Queensland substantially altered the training and facilities available to refugees during their initial accommodation in the State, and many families became separated as a result of accommodation and work requirements. As the resettlement of Displaced Persons continued across Queensland’s numerous regions, many families also found themselves in areas of relatively low cultural diversity. No comprehensive study has previously been conducted to analyse the resettlement of Displaced Persons and their children in Queensland. This project makes combined use of more than 10 000 archival files and newly collected oral history interviews with more than 50 Displaced Persons in order to understand the resettlement experiences of refugees in regions of low cultural and linguistic diversity. Focussing directly on the experiences of Polish, Latvian and Ukrainian families, this is the first work that systematically and exclusively assesses the resettlement of Displaced Persons in Queensland. This project contributes new knowledge to the study of displacement and refugee experiences of resettlement. In particular, it provides new insight into the resettlement of refugees in regions of low cultural and linguistic diversity, and the way in which resettlement is influenced by prior experiences of displacement and encampment. This thesis considers the displacement, encampment and resettlement of Polish, Latvian and Ukrainian Displaced Persons with children who were resettled in Queensland between 1947 and 1959. Considering the resettlement of Poles, Latvians and Ukrainians creates insight into the experiences of refugees who have been displaced having previously undergone sequential and compounded experiences of oppression and violence over decades. Drawing on the consequences of this, the thesis also considers Displaced Persons who were unable to identify with their nationality or citizenship of birth due to multiple territory and border changes. The personal and social impact of this was accentuated by their resettlement in areas lacking established migrant communities. Without such communities, locals had no capacity to understand or recognise refugees’ compounded and enduring loss. This project brings to light the ways in which displacement and encampment form legacies that continue to resonate across decades of resettlement. Such experiences not only became an historical trauma in their own right, but became a lens through which refugees came to understand their subsequent experiences in Queensland. These events were understood differently through their refraction via the lens of familial and social networks that developed in Queensland. This knowledge has contemporary implications for understanding the likely impact of the long-term encampment and incarceration of refugees globally. It also offers ways to consider the resettlement of refugees in Australia and other locations that may not have established migrant communities and support networks.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to find out how owners of mobile second homes like caravans can be potential buyers of stationary second homes in the small ski resort "Borgafjäll", and what kind of factors can affect the choice of mobile second homes.  To answer the research questions for this essay a qualitative method was used.  The qualitative date intended the semi-structured interviews used as a complement to the questionnaire for this study. The questionnaire has contributed the explanation of how caravan owners are thinking about own a stationary second home in Borgafjäll, while the semi-structured interviews gave a deeper information about the respondents thoughts about mobile- and stationary second homes.  The result of the collected data showed that the caravans in the camping area in Borgafjäll are more stationary than mobile. The result also shows that several of the caravan owners are potential buyers of a stationary second home in Borgafjäll. The caravan owners conveyed that they are not in a hurry to buy or build a stationary second home yet, because they feel that they already have a second home on wheels, and it makes them feel free and have no hurry to establish a stationary second home.

Abstract:
Second homes have been rapidly increasing throughout the world, especially in high amenity landscapes due to increasing mobility, greater leisure time after retirements and development of transportation means. Second home development in Turkey has been accelerated in the Mediterranean and Aegean coastal resorts especially after the 1980s. Fascination of rural environments, low cost of living and accommodation for holiday, considering second homes as investments and future permanent homes after retirements, and less stressful way of living in such coastal towns attract domestic and foreign tourists to buy second homes in amenity rich coastal areas of Turkey. This has been led to second home invasion and construction pressure on amenity rich landscapes, protected lands, countryside and natural environments. This thesis aims to investigate the challenges of coastal resort towns regarding second-home developments.

Abstract:
Skilled and educated workers are somewhat of a rarity for many rural and peripheral communities. The global migration trend where younger residents of these communities tend to leave for more populated areas leaves the communities with an older population that struggles to find new employees to replace those who retire. However, this does not mean that rural and peripheral communities are unattractive areas. Second-home owners verifies how these areas are attractive for certain individuals for various periods. More importantly, previous research show how second-home owners are often highly educated within their fields, they invest time in their host community, and they can potentially become permanent members of the society. Thus, this study aims to explore second-home owners potential of acting as a recruitment resource for the local labour market of the host community. This is done by using Vilhelmina municipality in Västerbotten county, Sweden, as an example. By using quantitative methods, the findings of this study suggest that the occupational background of second-home owners causes them to be a potential recruitment resource for the local labour market. However, the findings for the study suggest that the willingness to contribute to the local labour market is a mixed bag. Nevertheless, this study contributes to the current understandings of labour recruitment in rural and peripheral areas by confirming the possibility for extension of second-home owners as a resource.

Müller, Dieter K. "German second home owners in the Swedish countryside : on the internationalization of the leisure space." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Kulturgeografiska institutionen, 1999. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-84721.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1991 and 1996 the number of German second home owners in Sweden increased from about 1,500 to more than 5,500. The purpose of this thesis is to give a comprehensive description and analysis of the German cottage purchases in Sweden, 1991-96. In detail, the motives of the cottage buyers, the circumstances, the geographical patterns of cottage ownership, its diffusion, the integration of the cottage owners, and their expenses in the receiving areas are investigated. The analysis is based on two main sources; (a) an unique database UMCOBASE covering all second homes in Sweden; (b) a survey among 91 German second home owners. Second home ownership is considered as touriste product and as semi-permanent migration to the countryside. These perspectives have in common the importance of the role of the positive image of the countryside. Differences in property prices and climate may also attract second home owners to a specific area. It is argued that changes in the German society form a considerable driving force. Stress and life in the large metropolitan areas as well as the political situation after German reunification contribute not only to this interest for second home living, for the countryside, but also for Sweden, often seen as a shining example. Many German images of Sweden are based on popular writings and movies of the Swedish children's author Astrid Lindgren. Sweden provides the German cottagers with the requested environments and the availability of housing, cheap property prices, and rather short distances make the interior parts of southern Sweden an ideal destination for the mixture of households with different individual motivations and preferences mainly from Hamburg and Berlin. The internationalization of the economy and the globalization of culture make it easier to purchase a second home abroad. In this case, the growth of German second home ownership in Sweden can be considered as a colonization of the Swedish countryside. The diffusion of cottage ownership is enhanced and directed by the innovators who due to their social networks attract new cottagers to the same area. A very important precondition for the increased German interest in Swedish cottages was the decline of the Swedish currency in 1992 allowing purchases at a cheaper price. The fact that the real estate agencies focused on the German market may be another reason for the increase, and also for the distribution of German cottage ownership within Sweden. The German second home patterns are also analyzed employing multiple regression analysis. It is shown that the distance between ferry harbors and second homes is a major restriction for the distribution of German cottage ownership in Sweden. Even future growth will take place in areas where German cottage owners are present today. The multi-functionality of the countryside caused competition regarding land-use and decision-making power between rural residents, tourists, and agents of other interests. Even if second home tourists and the permanent residents share a lot of interests, integration into the local community can be difficult. It is argued that the German cottagers are leisure gentrifiers consuming the countryside as a leisure resource only. Second home owners are faithful tourists who visit the second home area frequently and stay for a long time. This entails that they also spend a considerable amount of money in the host community. Hence, some jobs in the research area are more or less dependent on the expenditures of the German cottage owners. Despite being motivated, most German cottagers have problems integrating into the host community. The German cottagers seem to adapt to this situation by meeting with each other and by applying a conservative eco-strategy, thus converting their surroundings into their imaginary Swedish countryside. The post-war societies in the western world are characterized by rapid changes. The recent interest in second homes can be read as a rejection of modern life, because the cottage might be the continuous place in life. It is argued, however, that the second home is attractive because it blurs the strict separation of everyday life and tourism.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the second-home owners of three peripheral parts of Gotland; Fårö, Östergarnslandet and Storsudret. Who they are, what consequences their presence give the local society and if they have contributed to a process of gentrification. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods have been used to answer the research questions. There have been five semi-structured interviews and the quantitative research was a sample- study intended to show the age, income, and primary residence of the second-home owners. The results showed that the second-home tourism of peripheral Gotland has led to a set of consequences; the creation of a seasonal society, a decrease in local taxes and loss of municipal services. There is however uncertainty that the houses would be inhabited by year-round residents if the second-home owners were not living there. The second-home owners are elderly people, many in retirement age. They have high incomes and most of them have their primary residence in metropolitan Stockholm. Many of them are willing to help with local projects and use their knowledge from their professions and are seen as a resource by the interviewees. There are indications that gentrification have indeed happened in the areas when looking at income-levels, but more research variables need studying, such as levels of education and housing prices.

Abstract: This Doctoral research was conducted in the Brazilian city of Angra dos Reis, located in Rio de Janeiro state, and it investigated the issue of leisure among its inhabitants as associated with the growth of the second home business. The concept of the second home is considered problematic because it covers many variables, such as the distribution, the characteristics, the function, the planning aspects and the social impacts. In current studies Brazilian researchers have been working within the definition of a 'second home' as a residence with a minimum length of occupancy and proof of the possession of two residences. In the case of Angra dos Reis, this concept was not adequate to understand the impacts of this business on the leisure of the inhabitants. The main reason rests on a particular type of second home established in Angra dos Reis called 'gated communities', a type of residence that conjures images of "a residential area with restricted access [¿] with walls or fences, and controlled entrances that are intended to prevent penetration by non-residents. Mainly, these types of second home have been constructed around desirable natural amenities (beaches, waterfalls and forests) in Angra dos Reis, and have been sold on the basis of the exclusive natural spaces guaranteed by the second home market. This research aimed to analyze the relationship between local residents and second homeowners. Using the ethnographic method, the researcher conducted opportunistic sampling in a specific neighborhood called Frade. The study revealed the genesis and the function of the social networks of locals and second homeowners, but also those of the council and state office representatives, the administrative body of the gated communities and NGOs. The framework theory used in this research drew on the concepts of: 'second homes'; social capital; gated communities; locality; symbiotic and opposite relationships. Consequently, leisure practices such as fishing and golf, shared by local residents and second home owners, showed themselves to be a potential object of material and symbolic exchange through which to establish rules, negotiations and strategies to include or exclude groups of the leisure network

Second home is the residential property not used permanently, which does not constitute the place of primary residence of a particular household. The actual occurrence of this type of property is significant, mainly in the surroundings of large cities. The space resulting from the agglomeration of second homes in private developments is particularly differentiated. This sort of urbanization differs substantially from other forms of land use and occupation, not constituting urban nor rural spaces. Based on the relevance and differentiation of this phenomenon, the objective established for this work was to analyze the influence of second homes developments in the space production and organization. This work described and analyzed the land use and occupation process resulting from the implementation of second homes developments on Bunjiro Nakao Highway (SP-250), in the proximities of São Paulo Metropolitan Region (RMSP). The analysis was based on bibliographical and documental surveys, fieldwork, in-depth interviews and quantitative data analysis. The study presents the reality of second homes developments and their environments, describing the creation process, characteristics and dynamics of this type of specialized space. The logic of this phenomenon is discussed in the perspective of the interaction and conflicts between the different groups of social agents involved, including owners of second homes, landowners, real state corporations, residents of the surroundings and public agents. The results show that second homes developments bring benefits and losses to the society, reproducing the reality of inequality and social injustice, but at the same time generating income and employment.

Abstract:
Purpose: To evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of second home tourism as a sustainable form of tourism, using the three dimensions economic, environmental and social sustainability, and to discuss the future importance of second homes for sustainable tourism in Värmdö municipality. Methods: The methods of research include four interviews with respondents connected to the future of tourism and second homes in Värmdö municipality, a survey conducted with locals of Värmdö municipality and an analysis of statistical reports and official documents. Theoretical framework: The paper is based on theories of sustainability, second homes’ impact on destinations, peak consumption and the future of second homes. Conclusions: Second homes are a positive complement to the traditional tourism that takes place in Värmdö municipality during the summer, due to the fact that second home owners visit the municipality during the remainder of the year to a greater extent than the traditional tourists. From a sustainability point of view second homes can both have a positive and a negative impact on the local community where the positive economic effects are the most prominent. The traditional tourism in Värmdö municipality is expected to increase as a result of the ongoing destination development projects. The number of second homes is predicted to gradually decrease due to many of them being turned into permanent homes and the limited construction of new second homes. The reduced supply but constant or increased demand is likely to lead to increased prices of second homes. Second homes are expected to continue to play an important role in the tourism industry in Värmdö municipality.

Abstract:
The concept of the croft (Sw. torp) is complex. From the 17th century crofts were small tenant holdings on a farm or estate. Along with changes in society since c. 1850, they were converted into freehold farms, second homes or left to ruins. They acquired new functional, social and symbolic values and today the croft is mostly associated with a rural idyll. The aim of the thesis is to study the transformations of the croft since1850 in order to understand how and why it has survived as a place and acquired the meanings it has. Thus the construction of place is in centre of attention. This process is approached from three angles: the materiality of the croft, ideas and representations of it and various practices relating to it. This is studied through historical documents and maps, text analysis and interviews, in part through three case studies in Uppland, Småland and Värmland. The main conclusions are that great changes notwithstanding, there are continuities in all three dimensions of the croft. This combination of inertia and change is central to how and why the croft has survived. The study also shows the importance of timing between available rural dwellings and a demand for such dwellings. Another conclusion is that the idealisation of the croft is old and not only a present day phenomena. Further, the different dimensions of the croft and the relations which can be found between them have been important for the transformation and survival of the croft. The materiality, immateriality and practices of the croft in the past remain parts of what constitutes it today, together with those dimensions in the present. The study shows the possibilities inherent in focusing on the intertwining of various dimensions and periods of time for the understanding of the processes of place construction.

Abstract:
Given a sloping wooded site in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, the problem of the thesis project was to design a retreat that would fit the environment and the people that would inhabit it. It was a searching for the interdependence between the landscape and the building. Equally important was a search for a structure that would give architectural integrity to the house. The design process included a time of discovery and clarification of values and priorities. Two additional steps during the schematic design were processes architect Charles Moore referred to as"mapping" and"collecting''. These processes help to establish relationships between the inhabitants and things they recognize. Structural elements of post and beam construction gave a sense of order in the design layout and helped to organize the spaces within the form of the house. A system of equidistant columns formed by four wood posts also provided the physical linkage between the building and the site. Native field stone was used for the large piers that supported the columns as well as for the perimeter walls of the living room structure. The inner landscape of the house, the pathways, the rooms and the machines within them, developed from the basic idea that the building would grow from a central axis or “spine” that originated from the outside at the street's edge, extended across the site, and moved into the building to become the main artery of the structure as well as the connection between outside and inside.

Abstract:
Second homes are a widespread part of the Swedish landscape and in many municipalities along the coastline the population can vary seasonally due to that. This cause planning issues for the municipalities, in how they plan their infrastructure, service etc. Studies has also shown that there are two sides in the discussion about second homes, some areas want to attract second home owners because they believe that this group help the municipality to grow while others try to attract permanent residents and restrict new development of second homes. The subject has been of discussion for a long time from many angels, for instance implementation of regulations to prevent second homes.  The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what planning strategies municipalities apply in areas that change so heavily in population depending on season. The method for this thesis is based on a mixture between comparative analysis and content analysis of six comprehensive plans and two policy documents from six municipalities with archipelagos. Furthermore, from the content analysis of the different documents, three themes were produced from the strategies which then were compared in comparative analysis where similarities and differences were highlighted. The themes were population and housing, infrastructure and transport communication, service, business sector and labor. The analysis was subsequently put into context with related academic research such as urbanization theories, rural gentrification, planning theories among others. This ended with a discussion and conclusion. Conclusively the analysis show that municipalities no longer plan for second homes but for permanent residents, the municipalities believed that it is reactionary to plan for second home owners and not primary for permanent residents.

Abstract:
Over the past few decades, the development of coastal areas has become an increasingly contested arena. For many years, tourism in remote coastal areas has been the preserve of a few intrepid campers, surfers and recreational fishers. More recently, however, numbers along parts of the coast have increased rapidly, not only contributing to an expansion of camping activity, but also pressure for more commercially oriented tourism. This has contributed to concerns about the environmental sustainability of tourism in remote coastal areas. Governments have increasingly been faced with the challenge of balancing ecological concerns with the pursuit of economic development. Adding to the complexity are the differing needs and demands of various segments of the tourism market all looking to enjoy particular places. Balancing the demands of campers, backpackers, package tourists and others in a single place is often wrought with conflict. This study explores some of these issues in a remote coastal area in Western Australia. The Ningaloo coast has evolved from a difficult to reach destination used by a small number of campers, to one of Western Australia's most popular tourist destinations in just two decades. The thesis examines the factors underlying the growth and change of tourism in the region, tracing its evolution from a few small rudimentary campsites to proposals for large scale resort developments. Of particular interest to this thesis is how planning and policy processes aim to address developmental pressures and resource use/planning conflicts. Additionally, this study provides an insight into the issues facing the informal, long term camper as the traditional segment of Ningaloo's tourism market. It examines how current planning and policy for the Ningaloo coastline affects this group by reshaping traditional tourism use of the area.

Quinn, Deirdre. "Holiday home, sweet home : a phenomenological approach to second home living in Ireland." Thesis, Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10369/912.

Full text
Abstract:
This study constructs a phenomenological account of the second home living experience in Ireland, exploring the interactions between the everyday home life and the holiday home life of the second home owner. It is contextualized by a critical review of the relevant literatures on post-modernism, cosmopolitanism, home and second home living. The thesis utilises a package of participant-centred qualitative methodologies (including in-depth interviews, audio diaries and participants’ photographs) in order to produce a fine-grained insight into their experiences of second home living. The fieldwork consists of two phases, the first based on in-depth interviews with second home owners and the second based on a further series of in-depth interviews driven by the participants’ audio diaries and photographs. The key themes to emerge from the first phase of this study are: everyday life; family life; friends and neighbours; frequency of use, access, mobility and transcendence; other holidays; activities in the second home; acquisition of home; primary home; attachment and rituals. The second phase of the study was developed to explore these in greater detail and it emerges that there is considerable overlap between the ‘everyday’ or primary home lives and the ‘holiday’ or second home lives of the participants of the study. It is suggested that holiday home life constitutes a ‘stripped down’ version of home that allows for more ‘living’. The study thus examines the very essence of what we understand tourism to be; tourism cannot be understood except in relation to ‘home’, it is our point of departure into a place and space that is different. The study reveals that in the case of second home living home remains an integral part of the tourism experience. It concludes that while there are similarities between everyday home life and everyday holiday home life, the everyday and the touristic, there are significant differences. It is also clear, however, that the holiday home owners do not find this ambiguity uncomfortable and indeed they flit between homes with practised ease.

Wang, Xiaoxiao. "The Second Home Phenomenon in Haikou, China." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/1010.

Full text
Abstract:
Second home ownership is a new and booming phenomenon in China. Although it has been widely discussed in newspaper, radio and other mass media, it has not raised much academic concern. This study is a preliminary research in this field.

In western counties, second home growth has caused a series of socio-economic impacts to the host community, including housing price inflation, displacement of local people, disruption of local service, etc. These effects identified by western literatures are examined in the context of Haikou, China.

Through applications of interview, on-site observation and secondary research, this study generally confirms the impacts addressed by other second home research. Similar to the western experience, the growth of second homes in Haikou has both positive and negative impacts. On the positive side, the increase of second home purchase contributes to the boom of property-related industry. On the negative side, it causes inflation pressure on housing price and affects the affordability of the housing for local people. The seasonality of second home occupation also leads to a "ghost communit" problem. However, as the development of second homes in Haikou is at an early stage, both their positive and negative impacts are not significant. Some effects such as the displacement of locals, the effects on local retail outlets and services are not detectable. Remarkably, this study addresses two problems that can only be found in China: "college entrance exam immigration" and "illegal sale of hukou".

Based on the major findings, policy recommendations for local government are provided. Implications for conducting research in China, and for future research opportunities are also suggested.

Fantini, van Ditmar Delfina. "IdIOT : second-order cybernetics in the 'smart' home." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2016. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/2697/.

Full text
Abstract:
During thesis brings second-order cybernetics into design research, in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) and ‘smart’ homes. My main proposition is to question and critically analyse the embedded epistemology in IoT technology in relation to human centred activities. I examine how human lives are represented within the quantified approaches inherent in current notions of ‘smart’ technology, derived from Artificial Intelligence (AI), and characterise this as the Algorithmic Paradigm. I explore questions of how complex, lived, human experience is oversimplified in the IoT. By adopting an epistemology derived from second-order cybernetics — acknowledging the importance of the observer — combined with my ‘IdIoT Proposition’, a way of ‘slowing down’ research on a fast-paced topic, I explore designing reflectively. The IdIoT is a methodological framework characterised by the process of slowing down and asking ‘What are we busy doing?’ in order to become aware of algorithmic oversimplifications. This methodological approach provides self- awareness and self-reflection on ‘the way of knowing the world’ to the researcher and to the participants, in the context of the Algorithmic Paradigm applied in IoT. Through a series of practice-based projects, I use the figure of the ‘SMART’ fridge to examine the implications of the Algorithmic Paradigm in the ‘smart’ home. The consideration that ‘smartness’ is relational is investigated in Becoming Your ‘SMART’ Fridge, in which I position myself as the algorithm behind a ‘smart’ fridge, using quantitative and qualitative data to make sense and ‘nonsense’ outcomes, and exploring householders’ interpretations. In the ‘SMART’ Fridge Session, I developed scripted dialogues characterised by active, reflective users, and assigned roles in which the ‘smartness’ of the algorithms is explored via professional performances and fictitious roles taken on by members of the public. The findings reveal the value of second-order cybernetics, acknowledging an unpredictable observer and embracing ‘smart’ as relational in interaction with IoT technology. They suggest that a shift in perspective is required to create more meaningful interactions with devices in the ‘smart’ home, questioning the current technological path, challenging the dominant epistemology and proposing alternatives. My methodological approach demonstrates how design research and 1 second-order considerations can work together, asking novel questions to inform disciplines with an interest in the IoT, both from a design perspective and in terms of broader implications for society. The work has value for design, HCI, Critical Algorithm Studies, and for technical developers involved in the creation of IoT systems.

In the past few decades, research in black hole physics have shown a deep relation between black holes, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics. In particular, blackholes in a semiclassical context appear to have a temperatureTH =k/2p and an entropy Sbh = A/4 proportional to its surface gravity k and area A,respectively. This striking connection is strengthened when one analyses the validity of the so called Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics (GSL), which states that the entropy of matter outside the black hole plus the black hole¿s entropy never decrease with time. This work investigate general proofsofthevalidityofGeneralizedSecondLaw,sinceitplaysacentralroleininterpreting black holes as thermodynamical entities. In addition, it is analyzed how the GSL can be used to extend a classical singularity theorem to a semiclassical context.

Abstract:
A SECOND UNIVERSE is a memoir-in-essays that traces the author’s coming of age and her pursuit of self-discovery, belonging, and healing in all its forms. The book opens in the past, diving into the lives of the author’s parents before she was born and shedding light on the many obstacles they overcame to bring her earth-side. Set against the backdrop of the Southern Utah deserts and the clarity the author finds in the natural world, these essays wind through the author’s different childhood homes, down the lonely and desolate road of a sister’s addiction, and into the darkness that comes as she braces for her father’s impending blindness. Similar to Brenda Miller’s LISTENING AGAINST THE STONE, this collection explores the inherent desire for human connection and spiritual insight that we search for in the places we live, the people we love, and the nature that surrounds us.

In the path of Brazilian energy production, the dams have a leading role in the national development, but also in sociospatial transformations. This study examines the Salto Caxias Hydroelectric Power Plant, its economic and social role in the formation of territories in the urban community that had affected areas. The paper presents an overview of the Brazilian energy production and the sociospatial transformations resulting from the construction of dams, as well as a history of the Brazilian energy sector under the bias of the environmental issue. It was held a conceptual review of some geographic categories used constantly by the literature by studying tourism, such as landscape, place, space and territory, beyond the concept of leisure. Specify the tourism and recreation in the reservoirs and the production and consumption of space by their activities. The methodology used was based on the survey of literature on the topic and empirical research, through questionnaires, interviews and observations in situ. The results obtained allowed to understand the importance that the construction of the Salto Caxias dam had in the new sociospatial dynamics that originated in the urban communities affected. The tank formation as well as its use and use of its banks allowed the leisure and tourism practice in the region. The research revealed the tourism contribution of second homes for the production of space and the (re)creation of the territory.

Abstract:
Sweden is a popular holiday destination for people from all over Europe. Its beautiful nature, the possibility of various outdoor-activities and the quintessential Swedish traditions and life-style attract tourists and potential holiday-home-owners alike. Citizens especially from countries such as Denmark, Norway and Germany are buying houses mainly in the southern and western parts of Sweden, searching for a better, easier and more relaxed life in the Swedish countryside. In my study I chose "Högsby kommun", a small municipality situated in the county of Kalmar in Småland as an exemplary case-study to show how Swedish communities deal with the steady decline of inhabitants. The aim of the study is to examine how arguments are used to convince immigrants in moving to Högsby kommun and how they relate to motives of foreign second home owners. Which arguments are used in promoting the place and what kinds of motives have foreign buyers of second homes to choose Högsby kommun as a place to stay? It is a qualitative case study, information is collected through interviews with employee of Högsby kommun and real estate agents, a content analysis of brochures and e-mail questionnaire with second home owners from Germany. The theoretical approaches are counterurbanisation in relation to lifestyle, theory of place identity and promotion of places and research of the motives in buying a second home. The results of the study show that arguments and motives building on each other. The arguments are promoting mainly a beautiful nature, quietness, a relaxed lifestyle and inexpensive housing - all of this are even motives for  foreign second home buyers moving to Högsby kommun.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, I study the relationship between the use of the child home care allowance and second and third births among women aged 19-44 in Finland. I use register data from the Finnish Census Panel (FCP) on 254 465 women who had a second or third child during 1993 to 2007. I apply discrete-time event-history analysis to examine whether women using the child home care allowance while their previous child was under the age of three have a higher risk to proceed to subsequent childbearing – second and third births – than those not using the allowance while their previous child was under the age of three. The analysis is conducted separately for second and third births. The results show that the use of the child home care allowance has an effect on the risk of subsequent child, and that women using the child home care allowance have a higher risk of having a second and a third child than women not using the allowance. Also, the risk of having a second child is found to be higher than having a third child. According to the findings, timing matters. There are differences in how soon women get their subsequent child, and not only whether they get a second and third child or not. These differences are not explained by the control variables. However, the analysis does not demonstrate any causality between the use of the allowance and subsequent childbearing. The impact of the use of the allowance on childbearing may be due to selection effects.

Levy, James. "Holding the line: The Royal Navy's Home Fleet in the second World War." Thesis, Swansea University, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.493885.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a strategic and operational history of the Royal Navy's Home Fleet in the Second World War. Its primary focus is on the mission of the Home Fleet under Allied strategy: to protect the UK; to prevent the deployment of German Navy surface ships into the Atlantic; to enforce a blockade of Germany; after 1941, to fight through the convoys to north Russian ports. These themes are explicated against the backdrop of a shifting set of strategic priorities and the needs of other theatres. They are placed in the context of the ships available, the building program of the 1930s, and the Anns Control diplomacy that dictated the shape of both. Significant attention is given to the actions of the Home Fleet's four Commanders-in-Chief: Sir Charles Forbes, Sir John Tovey, Lord Fraser of North Cape, and Sir Henry Moore. Their interaction with the top political and military leadership in Britain, most crucially with Winston Churchill and Dudley Pound, is discussed, and their individual tenures in command evaluated. Certain minor commanders are also discussed and their performance critiqued. The dissertation highlights such tactical operations as the First and Second Battles of Narvik, the loss of the carrier Glorious, the Bismarck chase, and the battles of the Barents Sea and North Cape. Attention is given to the Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union, and their place in the overall Allied war effort. The above is based on a thorough review of Admiralty records and other primary sources plus readings in the secondary literature.

Abstract:
Many young people in the Stockholm metropolitan area struggle with accessing the formal housing market and are therefore relying on short-term, second-hand contracts. By drawing on ten semi-structured interviews this essay explores the second-hand tenant’s ability to feel a sense of belonging towards their home. The tenants are often unable to just be in their home and instead feel they need to conform to the landlord’s ideas of proper behaviour.Through the unequal power relations between landlord and tenant the tenants rarely feel at ease in their home. By using a phenomenological conceptualisation of home, I reason that home loses its ability to anchor a person’s sense self in the world and as a result the tenants become more isolated and detached.

Abstract:
The study addressed immigrant families' and mainstream school systems' support for young children's home language learning in Basel, Switzerland. In Switzerland, as in many European countries and in Australia, early childhood educators work with growing numbers of children from immigrant, refugee and asylum seeking families. The culturally, linguistically and ethnically diverse groups of children that now characterise childcare centres, kindergartens and primary schools result from these patterns of immigration and present challenges for teachers and other educators who cater for the needs of increasingly diverse student populations. The literature on home languages acknowledges the importance of the relationship between a child's first language and development in the second language and the essential role of language proficiency in academic success. Despite knowledge from extensive studies on the interdependency of first and second language development (Cummins, 1979, 1981b, 1991, 2001) and evidence that continued development in a child's first language is crucial for overall cognitive development and transfer to second language learning (Collier, 1995), there is little focus on helping children maintain their home language in the early years of education. Arguably too, information and communication technologies (ICTs) lead to increased availability and opportunities for global communication, affecting the nature of communication, and creating possibilities for new forms of learning in the home and school. Children must therefore have the opportunity to become proficient users of these new and evolving forms of technology in order to acquire the skills, including language skills that they will need for future employment. In the light of this conceptual background, the present research focused on: (1) Immigrant parent beliefs and attitudes to home language use and how languages were used at home. (2) The strategies families used to promote home language learning in oral and written forms. (3) The extent to which ICTs were used as a tool to support home languages in the family and school environment. (4) The kinds of support offered in school and communities and what government policies and initiatives were afforded to home languages. (5) The nature of school and community policies and practices on the promotion and maintenance on home languages. These issues were addressed through a qualitative interpretive research approach drawing on the traditions of phenomenography (Marton 1986) and Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1990). The research was based on three main data sources: (1) analysis of policy and curriculum documents from school systems, (2) interviews with key education personnel and (3) interviews with ?immigrant? parents (n=58) from diverse socio-economic backgrounds living in Basel. Families were drawn from 16 countries including the former Yugoslavia, (Kosovo, Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia), Spain, South and Central America, and Turkey. All children, whose parents participated in the study, attended state run kindergartens and primary schools. A major focus in the data collection and analysis was on (a) parents' perspectives and experiences as they negotiated home language learning in the home, school and community and the extent to which they used ICTs to enrich home language development, and (b) mainstream teachers' perspectives on the role home languages played in linguistically and culturally diverse classrooms, as well as the role ICTs and media played in teaching children from immigrant families. The results of the study showed that: (a) immigrant children's home languages and culture as well as bilingualism and multilingualism are prominent features in Basel integration policy and curriculum documents but this focus is rarely translated to early childhood classroom practice, (b) classroom teachers focus predominantly on children learning their second language (German), (c) immigrant children's home language and culture is valued and respected but formal opportunities for children to learn to read and write in their home languages begin only when they have reached second grade, (d) there were a range of perspectives, reasons and strategies for maintaining and promoting home languages within families, (e) ICT was not an integral part of children's classroom experiences in kindergarten and scarcely integrated in primary classrooms, but was used in a variety of ways within homes to promote home language and communication, (f) there were wide variations in parents' and teachers' perspectives on what constitutes parent involvement in children's learning and education, and (g) links between home and school were mostly 'one way' and formal and some parents desired more frequent, more informal and spontaneous contact with teachers. These findings have considerable implications for Basel school and classroom practice and for early and middle year policy makers. They show that embedded assumptions of both teachers and parents may have a negative impact on children's positive identification with both majority and minority language learning. Limited financial support for home language classes is likely to have a negative effect on immigrant children's home language literacy learning. Dialogue needs to be sought on the potential for ICT use in home language learning. Policy makers' efforts towards developing multilingualism in all children are problematic. Some parents drew attention to the challenge of learning a third language through a second language, L1 + L2a +L2b + L3+L4. (L1 = home language, L2a= German Swiss dialect, L2b = Standard German, L3= French, L4 = English). To help better explain and increase awareness of the interrelationship between home languages, ICT use and the home-school connection, a model was developed that reflects the range of immigrant family perspectives on home language learning and the influences that appear to promote home language development within children's environments. This 'multilingual social cohesive communications model' should assist in understanding the important links between home languages, ICTs and home-school communication. The model emphasises the importance of developing bottom up local level strategies and recognises the vital role of positive interactions between parents and teachers. It builds on a sociocultural view of language learning, tapping on the potential of new learning tools (ICTs) in real and virtual communities. It recognises the importance of intercultural identity formation and at the same time the inhibiting effects of discrimination both overt and covert. The model incorporates the strategies schools need to improve communication with families and to strengthen links between home and school with the view to improving educational outcomes and prospects for immigrant children.

TOSO, STEFANIA. "SECOND HOME TOURISM IN RURAL ITALY. Spatial patterns and social practices towards community resilience." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2023. https://hdl.handle.net/10281/404658.

Full text
Abstract:
The research project investigates the phenomenon of second-home tourism in the Italian rural and inner areas, through the analysis of spatial patterns and social practices related to second-home owners in the Province of Asti, chosen as a case study that in the last decades has seen an exponential increase in the percentage of empty houses inhabited by non-residents. The theoretical framework chosen for the development of the investigation is based on the concepts of place attachment and community resilience; the question at the centre of the research revolves around the ways in which different place attachment processes can play an active role in the construction of resilient rural communities. Through the application of the iterative qualitative research process (Gaudet and Robert, 2018) and according to a mixed methodology, quantitative data (ISTAT, reference municipalities, aqueduct databases) and qualitative data (57 semi-structured in-depth interviews within the provincial boundaries with second-home owners, local administrators, real estate agents, representatives of non-profit associations and representative bodies of the territory and, finally, local community inhabitants; newspaper articles; photographic material produced by the researcher and provided by the interview participants) were analysed. The analysis traced the spatial development of the phenomenon of second homes and led to the identification of specific social and cultural practices led by second-home dwellers that are contributing to processes of renewal, revitalisation and adaptation of Asti's rural communities in an attempt to contribute to the regeneration of some rural villages actively. The research shows how the contribution of second home users in marginal contexts can be significant and stimulating in the relationship with permanent inhabitants, a confrontation sometimes marked by change, sometimes by resistance.

Chung, Yu-Chiao. "Schools at home : parental support for learning Mandarin as a second or foreign language." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2012. http://research.gold.ac.uk/7152/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined how parents of various backgrounds supported their children learning Mandarin as a second or foreign language. It addresses two questions which have previously rarely been addressed in the literature. 1. Whether and if so in what ways do parents of different backgrounds support their children in learning Mandarin as a second or a foreign language? 2. How is this affected by social, cultural as well as the parents’ own educational experience? Here the most relevant socio-cultural theories of learning: prolepsis; guided participation; syncretism; synergy and funds of knowledge have been studied. Ethnographic research was conducted on six families chosen from three categories: families in which both parents had Chinese heritage; one parent had Chinese heritage and those in which neither parent had a Chinese background. Data were collected through participant observation and interviews. The method of multi-layering was applied to analyze these data: the outer layer- social and cultural background, the middle layer- supporting strategies and the inner layer- the pedagogic methods used by the parents. The results reveal that these parents were determined to assist their children’s learning and employed different methods: both direct (teaching) and indirect (providing access to resources, cultural activities and events). All parents set aside time for formal, serious, regular (school-like) learning sessions. The support they provided was affected significantly by their social, cultural and educational background. All enhanced their children’s motivation and learning achievement.

Kilinç, Nilay. "Lifestyle returnees at 'home' : the second-generation Turkish-Germans' search for self in Antalya." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2018. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/846055/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses a lifestyle migration lens to explore the second-generation Turkish-Germans’ ‘return’ migration to their ancestral homeland. Disappointed with the post-return lives in their parents’ towns of origin and/or in big cities like Istanbul, the research’s sample group consciously made the decision to remobilise themselves and resettle in Antalya, a tourism hub in the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The narratives reflect that the second generation’s ‘return’ imaginings and further life choices such as places of settlement are motivated by their goals of ‘living a fulfilling life’ and have a ‘coherent sense of self’. The qualitative study coins a new term, ‘lifestyle return migration’ which offers a hybrid conceptual framework, alternative to conventional migration theories that evaluate ‘return’ as an ‘income-maximising act’, ‘anomaly’ and ‘homecoming’. Based on the thematic and narrative analysis of 44 semi-structured, in-depth life-story interviews, the findings illustrate that ‘lifestyle returnees’ perceive Antalya as a place wherein their multiple identities, ‘alternative’ lifestyles and translocal ties can co-exist. Thus, Antalya’s cosmopolitan setting with many foreign, especially German, tourists and residents are particularly valued. Moreover, they can mobilise their human capital of educational qualifications, bilingual skills and “transcultural capital” to set up or get jobs in the tourism sector, combining work with leisure in ‘tourism spaces’ wherein they can sustain a persistent holiday feeling. In addition, the narratives reveal more existential themes of (re-)discovering their ‘true’ selves and (re-)inventing the meaning of ‘home’ in this international niche. Subsequently, the thesis aims to highlight the relevance of lifestyle migration approaches to explore complex ‘return’ decisions through an agency-oriented approach and with a focus on social fields embedded in specific locales.

Roberts, Richenda M. "'Art of a second order' : the First World War from the British home front perspective." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2013. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4008/.

Full text
Abstract:
Little art-historical scholarship has been dedicated to fine art responding to the British home front during the First World War. Within pre-war British society concepts of sexual difference functioned to promote masculine authority. Nevertheless in Britain during wartime enlarged female employment alongside the presence of injured servicemen suggested feminine authority and masculine weakness, thereby temporarily destabilizing pre-war values. Adopting a socio-historical perspective, this thesis argues that artworks engaging with the home front have been largely excluded from art history because of partiality shown towards masculine authority within the matrices of British society. Furthermore, this situation has been supported by the writing of art history, which has, arguably, followed similar premise. This study will demonstrate that engagement with the home front inevitably meant that artists’ work could be interpreted as supporting different values to the pre-war period. However, the reintegration of ex-servicemen after the war resulted in the promotion of the wartime ordeal of male combatants. Not only did this restore the pre-war position of men, it inspired canonical values for British First World War art to uphold masculine authority. Consequently much art engaging with the home front has been deemed antithetical to established canonical values and written-out of art history.
