Abstract:
In this essay, the author offers a candid discussion of Sebald’s legacy and the flurry of criticism aimed at securing his place in the literary canon. It engages many of Sebald’s signature themes: memory, amnesia, silence, history, and trauma. The author acknowledges Sebald’s masterful blend of language, photography, and archival material, resulting in a uniquely hybrid narrative form falling somewhere between essay and fiction. The essay is critical of Sebald’s most dedicated admirers—not because of any perceived paucity in Sebald’s work, but rather the shortsightedness of the critical machine that is desperately trying to fossilize Sebald as the end point of modern literature.

Abstract:
Palavras-chave: W. In order to do that, as a starting point, we observe the supposed opposition between document and fiction in Sebald's use of photographic material. This study proposes that we may understand the role played by photographs in the book by means of the literary mechanism developed by Sebald to present the search of his protagonist for elements of his unknown past. The present article characterizes this procedure as a “chain of narrators” and, after that, discusses the role played by photographs in the relationships between memory, narration and experience. Keywords: W. Abstract:
W. G. Sebald is one of the most original and significant authors of the twentieth century, but these credentials only make The Rings of Saturn that much more disappointing. In his other novels, Sebald’s drift between landscapes and encyclopedic fragments emerged out of a deep necessity and constituted an ingenious literary innovation. But here this style exists in a void. When an author becomes enslaved to his own style, when form is empty of content, the result is not merely boring. In his previous books, Sebald was a great writer of the German trauma, but in The Rings of Saturn he makes that national trauma banal.

Abstract:
Sebald based on a lecture given in Tübingen in February 1992. The essay occupies a special position in Sebald's oeuvre, as the author positions himself more pronouncedly than anywhere else on political issues, both with regard to the process of European unification and to fundamental challenges of Western societies in the transition to the twenty-first century. In my close reading the supposedly insignificant essay proves to be an important text for a reconstruction of Sebald's deeply melancholic view of history as expressed in the concept of a "natural history of destruction". At the same time, "European Peripheries" allows us to acknowledge the importance of Pierre Bertaux’ Mutation der Menschheit as an undiscovered influence on the development of Sebald's oeuvre. Keywords: W.G. Abstract:
This essay reads “As Day and Night,” an essay W. G. Sebald wrote about artist and friend Jan Peter Tripp, as a complex and multilayered commentary on the role of both written and visual texts in the author’s oeuvre. It draws on Sebald’s Austerlitz as well as the work of French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty to argue for the centrality of the human gaze in Sebald’s imagination. The human gaze forges a unique form of realism in Sebald, playing a central role in revealing the “metaphysical underside” of objects, which in turn provokes an ethical response in the reader-viewer.

Abstract:
How can we reengage books from the past in the world of the 21st century ? What do Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick or Fernando Pessoa’s Book of Disquiet have to teach us in our anthropic times as we take stock of the destruction of our basic terrestrial and atmospheric support ? What knowledge does literature possess about the essential vertigo of human life, which clings to its signs, its codes, its texts; a human life that is becoming progressively remote from the world as it withdraws into habitations made of signs ? What can these books inherited from tradition tell us about the support systems on which we depend ? What do we value, to what do we adhere ? And if our forms of life are the product of fictions that we spread across the world’s surface, what happens when they give way, and our supports crumble? These are the questions that run through the eight studies comprising this “history of vertigo”

Preston, A. "Violence and the modern novel : Coetzee and Sebald." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1415746/.

Full text
Abstract:
Early in her long essay On Violence, Hannah Arendt says “no one engaged in thought about history and politics can remain unaware of the enormous role violence has played in human affairs, and it is at first glance rather surprising that violence has been singled out so seldom for special consideration.” In the more than four decades since the publication of her book, much has been done to remedy this omission. Violence is everywhere now. As, through the eyes of our novelists, philosophers and cultural theorists, we look back on the wreck of the twentieth century, we see it as Walter Benjamin’s Angel of History perceived it, as a constellation of violence piled upon violence, a chaotic record of man’s brutality against man. This thesis sets out to chart the presentation of violence in the modern novel, looking specifically at the work of JM Coetzee and WG Sebald, two writers who have not only given us detailed accounts of the operation of violence in their work, but whose novels perform the ethical uncertainties of writing within a tradition that has been tainted by that violence. Using theorists from Benjamin to Arendt to Giorgio Agamben, I will look at the ethical and aesthetic decisions that each writer has made and question how and with what success Coetzee and Sebald have managed to write within the wreckage of a tradition scarred by violence. In wrestling with the subject of violence, modern novelists have had to discard many of the formal certainties of previous ages, tainted as they are by historical violence. I will show how violence, and the need to shape a narrative mode with which to address a debased modern existence, has led to formal inventiveness, to generic hybrids, to complex philosophical performances wrapped within the covers of books calling themselves “novels.” I will look at Sebald and Coetzee’s use of silence, of history, of other writers’ work in their attempts to find a voice with which to narrate the violence of modernity.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
In this chapter, Schütte introduces Sebald as a writer caught not only between two cultures, but between the worlds of academia and literature. It explores the beginnings of Sebald’s life, from his remote childhood in an Alpine village tohis ‘poisonous’ family inheritance – Sebald considered his parents complicit in the crimes of National Socialism. Schütte goes on to consider Sebald’s emigration to the UK, charting his development as an intellectual and his taking up of writing due to a dissatisfaction with the majority of German post-war literature.

Abstract:
This chapter challenges common misconceptions about Sebald, including the assumption that he wrote in English and that Austerlitz was the final work published in his lifetime. It goes on to discuss his misplaced label as a ‘Holocaust author’ and touches on the disappointing film adaptation of The Rings of Saturn. It also addresses controversies surrounding Sebald’s writing: how he deliberately situated himself as an academic outsider, was criticised by those who disliked his confrontation of German history, and his general animosity towards established champions of post-war literature.
