Smith, Steven Lyle. "Haiku Seasons." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2695/.

Abstract:
Haiku Seasons is a choral work that uses several haiku to portray moments in nature. Spread throughout the performance space, four choirs (SATB, 3/part) depict larger parts of the pastoral scene (i.e., mountains, the moon, etc.). Soloists depart from the choirs in order to perform solo, duo, trio, and quartet passages, which take place throughout the work. If enough singers are available, individual soloists may be used. The soloist groups display the more intimate moments of the scenes (i.e., sparrows, a blade of grass, etc.). The intent of Haiku Seasons is to create an image of nature isolated from human interaction. Thus, the image is a pastoral setting with many independent parts all coexisting in a relatively silent world. I combine aspects of tonality, time, space, and silence to create this image.

Your body exists. There is something in between. There is no singular meaning or defined content. Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with architecture and its changes through four seasons. It is about drawing new images of a building in different seasons. Like trees change their leaves in seasons and like people change their clothes in seasons, this project is about architecture changing its architectural elements in four seasons. It all began with an imagination of how a building would respond differently in each of the four seasons. The project, located at the waterfront of Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia, is an Aquatic Center with swimming pools, changing areas, saunas, fitness area, and massage areas. The Aquatic Center creates different images to its visitors through surrounding natures and their changes, architectural elements and their movements, visitors and their activities. The goal was to provide people unique and different experiences every time they visit.

Abstract:
Nicolas Poussin's landscapes, The Four Seasons, 1660-1664, have been the subject of extensive analysis because of their enigmatic character and the modulation in Poussin's style in his last years. The meaning of these representations has, however, remained cryptic and, to some extent, neglected.
This thesis attempts to make a contribution toward unravelling the mystery of The Four Seasons. These profound works reflect Poussin's religious persuasion, knowledge of which is essential to an understanding of them. Poussin's religious convictions, however, are difficult to discern with any precision; for, although he died a Catholic, he was closely associated with the progressive thinking that influenced religious belief in the Baroque age, much of which was rejected by the Church of Rome.
Nevertheless, Poussin was undoubtedly a devout Christian, inspired particularly by the early Christian Fathers and Stoics. It is in nature, above all, though, that he perceived God's presence and message which he strove to capture in his "altarpiece" to the seasons.

Abstract:
HURDAT is the main historical archive of all tropical storms and hurricanes in the North Atlantic Basin, which includes the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, from 1851 to the present. HURDAT is maintained and updated annually by the National Hurricane Center at Miami, Florida. Today, HURDAT is widely used by research scientists, operational hurricane forecasters, insurance companies, emergency managers and others. HURDAT contains both systematic biases and random errors. Thus, the reanalysis of HURDAT is vital. For this thesis, HURDAT is reanalyzed for the period of 1954-1963. The track and intensity of each existing tropical cyclone in HURDAT is assessed in the light of 21st century understanding and previously unrecognized tropical cyclones are detected and analyzed. The resulting changes will be recommended to the National Hurricane Center Best Track Change Committee for inclusion in HURDAT.

Abstract:
This thesis project started out with an ambition to inspire more people to discover the mesmerizing landscape of the inner parts of northern Sweden by making it more accessible and attractive to persons usually not looking for outdoor adventures or the solitude and silence of wilderness.   By that initial aspiration I was led into an investigation of how constant connectedness affect us in everyday life, what performing “work” require and how the presence of nature and a challenging climate could be used as resources; offering more than nice views or weather to be sheltered from. Not only is the nature in the north fascinating on its own but the vast areas of almost untouched nature is becoming something unique in the world, an amazing resource most Swedes are more or less unaware of.   This project aims to test an alternative way of working, exploring the opportunities the technology provide us with while also offering time for reflection and inspiration. The program is a version of a work retreat; a facility that offers temporary work spaces away from the office and everyday life, allowing new social constellations, new ideas and work processes.

This thesis describes the engineering tasks associated with production of Design Squad, a reality-based television program on WGBH. In Design Squad a client gives two teams of high school students an engineering design task for them to complete over two days of building. In order to facilitate production of this program an extensive amount of engineering preparation work is required. Tasks for each episode include concept brainstorming, prototyping of challenge solutions, material procurement, and on-set mentoring. These development and preparation activities require creative brainstorming, teamwork, and communication across a multi-disciplinary team. The MIT based engineering support team has created methods and guidelines to ensure efficient knowledge generation during prototyping that utilize sample builds, proofs of concept, and sketching. Techniques have also been developed for mentoring and guiding the cast members on set. Additionally, a wiki-based communication, tracking, and documentation tool was created to aid in the development process.

Wirkus, Jessie Leatham. "Number, Newtonianism, and Sublimity in James Thomson's The Seasons." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2462.

Full text
Abstract:
Recently, literary critics have increasingly drawn on methods of quantitative analysis to understand the readers and literature of the eighteenth century. Ironically, however, the eighteenth century is home to debates concerning the nature and usefulness of number, counting, and therefore, on some level, quantitative analysis. Eighteenth-century questions of number form an important part of the intellectual history of this period; these questions of number, in turn, hold important implications for language and the period's literature. I argue that the far-reaching influence of eighteenth-century questions of number can be seen especially well in the nature poetry of James Thomson. To explore this influence, I first discuss the problems of number presented to eighteenth-century mathematicians and philosophers by George Berkeley's critique of the infinitesimal calculus popularized by Isaac Newton. I then further explain the problems of number for eighteenth-century thinkers by drawing on philosopher Alain Badiou's theorization of the collapse of number in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This background brings to light connections between eighteenth-century questions of number and similar questions philosophers, such as John Locke, asked of language. These connections set the stage to discuss number in Thomson's The Seasons. Because of Thomson's rather unique exposure to the Newtonian tradition through his Edinburgh education, he was introduced not only to Newton's more popular discoveries, but also the mathematical and philosophical debates that swirled around Newton's methods. Coming out of this environment, Thomson's The Seasons display a particular kind of interest in number at its limits—infinity and zero. This paper will explore Thomson's tropological expressions of infinity and zero in the poem and note how these tropes replicate the logic of the sublime. Ultimately number at its limits in Thomson suggests the problems of expression, and, reading against traditional interpretations of Thomson, the limits of the Enlightenment project.

Great Barrington, Massachusetts. A naturally beautiful setting combined with four distinct weather seasons dictates a lifestyle for this small South Berkshire town's residents and visitors alike. This thesis proposes that it is desirable and possible for a dwelling to be unique to an area, and as such, to reflect and embody specific aspects of that area. A dwelling of this type could easily become the cornerstone of a recognizable new neighborhood, one which Great Barrington is in dire need of. In this thesis I have isolated the topography, climate, and mode of life which are specific to the Berkshire area and especially to Great Barrington. These extracted qualities specific to Great Barrington are used to generate a design for a single family house in this South Berkshire town. Through this residential model of the single family house it is suggested that one's physical habitation is able to both directly and indirectly reflect and relate to the ever changing seasons and weather. It is this ability of the single family house to form and foster relationships with its environment which makes Great Barrington a special place to be in; a place all of its own.

Full text
Abstract:
Two lakes in northern Sweden were sampled for carbon dioxide (CO2), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), oxygen (O2) and temperature in April and in May 2016. This to calculate budgets for the lakes as well as make comparisons and find what makes them differ. Morphometry, seasons and trophic levels were explored and found to potentially have different degrees of effect on concentrations. Morphometry showed noticeable spatial variance within and between lakes, meaning that more complex lakes will have different concentration throughout the lake compared to a simple morphometry which will not show this spatial spread. Different seasons showed variance in total concentrations rather than spatial variance. Levels of humic substances showed a small potential variance in total concentrations between the two lakes. The variances found were then used to determine whether one of two sampling methods were more valid than another. One strategy entailed sampling the deepest point only and let it represent the whole lake. The other used points spread out over the lake’s area, taking the morphometry of the lake into account. Initial results pointed to the second strategy being more accurate because of morphometry etc. however when considering things such as time and cost, the reasonableness of this strategy may not be favorable depending on the aim of an eventual study.

Abstract:
Lung spirometry data from three working-class industry populations were analyzed using logistic and linear regression to see if seasonality adversely affected test outcomes. Populations included emergency responders, general industry, and shipwrights. The data was organized into allergy and non-allergy seasons using NOAA meteorological data and regression and logistic analysis was run on these separate populations to test for demographic and seasonal effects on lung spirometry test outcomes. The American Thoracic Society gold standard was as a point for determining impaired lung function (FEV1/FVC > 0.80). It was found that seasonality imparted a slight linear effect on the predictive values of FEV1 and FVC for determining impaired lung function FEV1 and FVC values were Pr > 0.0003 and Pr > 0.0002, respectively. For demographic variables, age imparted the greatest linear effect for FEV1 and FVC, with significant p-values of 0.0002 and

Abstract:
Although Gómez Manrique left a corpus of over one hundred poems, there is still only one short monograph on his work, Introducción a la poesía de Gómez Manrique by Kenneth Scholberg, and the brief introduction by Francisco Vidal González to his edition of the poet’s work. Scholarship on his output has otherwise consisted mainly of articles on just one poem. This thesis is an attempt to place his work in the context of fifteenth-century society taking into account its social and political climate. His military career, political activity in the conflicts in the Iberian peninsula, and his administrative posts, together with the fact that he mixed with many of the most influential members of Castilian society, are all important aspects of his life, an awareness of which contributes to our understanding of much of his work. While the main editions of Gómez Manrique (Paz y Melia and Vidal González) divide his work into categories such as his love poetry, debate poetry, moral works and his political writing, here it is argued that these areas of his work do not fall neatly into discrete categories as there is much overlap among them. For this reason an attempt is made to trace the development of his verse and prose within a chronological framework as far as this is possible, taking into account a certain duality in his thought that suggests a rather complex character who is striving to make his voice heard in the turbulent society in which he lived. What binds the different elements of his work together to a large extent is a strong didactic purpose, driven by both Christian and Stoic teaching and Gómez Manrique’s desire to influence those in a position of power in Castilian society by means of the various literary forms that were cultivated by his contemporaries.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: In the U.S. STEC HUS is the most common cause of acute renal failure in children. In TN from 1996-2017 there were 2008 STEC cases were reported. Every year in the U.S, there 36 reported mortality each year. At our local children’s hospital, 4-5 children are hospitalized with STEC infection each year. Some of these children had no history of ingesting food items that could have placed them at risk to develop STEC infection; however, there are other ways that humans could get infected, such as exposure to contaminated water from cattle farms. GOALS: To determine if there are differences in the presence of STEC at a local park at different seasons of the year. METHODS: Fifty (50) ml of water samples were collected from a creek in 2 areas of public park in Johnson City, TN. Abstract:

Abstract:
Throughout the last three decades, the Arab region has attracted the unwanted attention of the rest of the world because of its spiralling political upheaval. This unrest has caused migration, economic and cultural changes, and eventually a spring of revolutions and protests in demand of reform. Arab countries are now in the spotlight of global current affairs, and all the imperfections regarding their cultural, social, and gender inequalities have surfaced to the foreground. Arab women novelists have been addressing feminist issues for centuries, chipping away at the stereotypical image of the meek and voiceless Arab woman that comes hand in hand with Orientalism. Through their fiction, writers such as Nawal El Saadawi, Hanan Al- Shaykh and Fadia Faqir have promulgated a bold brand of Arab feminist thought. This interdisciplinary thesis explores the Greater Syrian and Egyptian woman's novel written between 1975 and 2007. Through the in-depth analysis of Arab women's novels available in English, I attempt to uncover the many reasons behind today's gender inequality in Greater Syria and Egypt. By examining contemporary Arabic narrative styles and cultivating traditional Arab story-telling methods, the creative element of this thesis uses fiction to expose social and political injustice. The novel within this thesis challenges different forms of patriarchy that are dominant in the region, and endeavours to document a historical, on-going revolution.

Haggas, Lucinda. "Energetics of the American Kestrel (Falco Sparverius) During Three Seasons in Northern Utah." DigitalCommons@USU, 1985. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/4053.

Full text
Abstract:
Behavioral activiti es and predatory behavior of 18 American Kestrels (Falco sparverius, 9 males and 9 females) were observed for 350+ hours during 3 seasons (nonbreeding = Jan-Feb , breeding = mid-~lar-Apr, and postbreeding = late-Aug-Sept) in northern Utah. Daily energy expenditure (DEE) of male and female kestrels was estimated with a model that incorporated flight activity data from free-living birds and laboratory measurements on daytime and nighttime metabolic rates and energy costs of tissue production derived from captive kestrels. Production costs were included in the DEE for breeding and postbreeding kestrels. The energy cost of gonadal growth for males (0.02 kcal/day) and females (0.20 kcal/day) was added to the DEE of breeding kestrels. Breeding females expended an estimated 10.13 kcal/day for producing an average clutch of 4.5 eggs. The energy costs of fat deposition (2.27 and 4.39 kcal / day for males and females, respectively) and molt (2.38 and 2.72 kcal/day for males and females , respectively) were added to the DEE of postbreeding kestrels. In addition to the DEE , the model predicted nonflight energy expenditure (NFEE) and flight energy expenditure (FEE) during the day, and energy expenditure during the night (NEE). DEE of nonbreeding birds is generally higher (47.71 kcal/day) than those from the breeding (44.89 kcal / day) and postbreeding (42.42 kcal / day) seasons. DEE of females (48.69 kcal/day) is higher than males (41.31 kcal/day) primarily because females averaged 15.5% heavier than males during all 3 seasons, and females have higher costs of production. Kestrels are heaviest during the nonbreeding season and the amount of metabolizable energy available is highest. DEE is lower during the breeding and postbreeding seasons because thermoregulatory demands have decreased which may allow energy to be metabolized for production. NFEE accounts for most (48.5%) of the DEE. Flight costs are relatively small because kestrels allocate an average 3% of the photoperiod (25.6 min/day) to flight activities. Egg production accounts for 20% of the DEE of breeding females. The energy cost of fat deposition and molt accounts for 11.6 and 15.9% of the DEE for postbreeding males and females, respectively. These reproductive and tissue production costs may also elevate the DEE of breeding and postbreeding females to that of nonbreeding females.

Abstract:
Background: Research has found that injury rates in football are higher in competition than during practice. However, there is little research on the association between injury rates and type of football practices and how these specific rates compare with those in competitions. Purpose: This study utilized data from the National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance System (NCAA ISS) to describe men's collegiate football practice injuries (academic years 2004-2005 to 2008-2009) in 4 event types: competitions, scrimmages, regular practices, and walkthroughs. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiological study. Methods: Football data during the 2004-2005 to 2008-2009 academic years were analyzed. Annually, an average of 60 men's football programs provided data (9.7% of all universities sponsoring football). Injury rates per 1000 athlete-exposures (AEs), injury rate ratios (RRs), 95% CIs, and injury proportions were reported. Results: The NCAA ISS captured 18,075 football injuries. Most injuries were reported in regular practices (55.9%), followed by competitions (38.8%), scrimmages (4.4%), and walkthroughs (0.8%). Most AEs were reported in regular practices (77.6%), followed by walkthroughs (11.5%), competitions (8.6%), and scrimmages (2.3%). The highest injury rate was found in competitions (36.94/1000 AEs), followed by scrimmages (15.7/1000 AEs), regular practices (5.9/1000 AEs), and walkthroughs (0.6/1000 AEs). These rates were all significantly different from one another. Distributions of injury location and diagnoses were similar across all 4 event types, with most injuries occurring at the lower extremity (56.0%) and consisting of sprains and strains (50.6%). However, injury mechanisms varied. The proportion of injuries due to player contact was greatest in scrimmages (66.8%), followed by regular practices (48.5%) and walkthroughs (34.9%); in contrast, the proportion of injuries due to noncontact/overuse was greatest in walkthroughs (41.7%), followed by regular practices (35.6%) and scrimmages (21.9%). Conclusion: Injury rates were the highest in competitions but then varied by the type of practice event, with higher practice injury rates reported in scrimmage. In addition, greater proportions of injuries were reported in regular practices, and greater proportions of exposures were reported in regular practices and walkthroughs. Efforts to minimize injury in all types of practice events are essential to mitigating injury incidence related to both contact and noncontact.

Carroll, Sheila Mary. "Seasons of my life." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/17631.

Abstract:
My research is a creative text of lived experiences, which will highlight unique thought processes, in that they are my own. I have studied and reacted to some of the ideas of scholars of phenomenology, feminist thought, post-modern and structuralist ideas, literary and curriculum theory, and to the techniques of creative writers whose work I admire. It includes vignettes or snapshots of happenings captured in prose or in my recent attempts at poetry. The truth is that I have always wanted to be a writer, and that I have always written, but not for publication. In Part One of “The Rustle of Language” Barthes (1986) discusses the idea that the verb "to write" is intransitive; it is something a writer does. I have written in journals, in letters, in daybooks, in essays and in notes to myself on my readings, and I can see change. As Barthes says, "the one who writes I is not the same as the I read by you" (p. 17), and it is very different from the “I” writing now, of the past. I include all seasons of my life using the introductory poems as an overview, as an introduction to how I see myself now as I must have been then. My love for ballet and for the video I have of the National Ballet of Canada dancing The Four Seasons to Vivaldi’s score have been my inspiration. I expect that as I proceed, I shall add some references and delete others. As in all creative writing, it is difficult to tell exactly where my research and writing will take me. At this time I would like to concentrate on just one basic idea, which has been stated succinctly by van Manen (2002) in Phenomenology Online when he says, "phenomenological inquiry-writing is based on the idea that no text is ever perfect, no interpretation is ever complete, no explication of meaning is ever final, no insight is beyond challenge" (p. 1).

If the reservoir inflows can be forecasted precisely beforehand, they may benefit the reservoir operation and management in Taiwan. The long-term inflow forecasting system of reservoir combines a continuous rainfall-runoff model with the long-term weather outlook provided by the Central Weather Bureau to forecast one-month and three -month ahead inflows with the ten-day and one-month time steps. There are several tasks in the present study, including (1) the developing of a rainfall-runoff model based on the daily time step, (2) the developing of ten-day and monthly model and further comparing the accuracy among ten-day, monthly and daily model, (3) the combining of the modified long-term weather outlook and the continuous rainfall-runoff with different time steps to forecast the monthly and three-month inflows. The results reveal the continuous rainfall-runoff model has good performances on daily, ten-day and monthly flow simulation. The comparison shows that the daily time scale model has better performances than the ten-day and monthly one. Forecasted inflows by using different time scale model are compared with the historical average inflows. The comparison indicates that the proposed inflow forecasting system has better results in inflow forecasting. In conclusion, the daily rainfall-runoff model can get the better accuracy. Daily time scale can be easily used in different time scale forecasting data of Central Weather Bureau in the future. The inflow forecasting may support the reservoir management for operation decision and drought warning.
