Abstract:
The paper presents the results of experimental study of students’ information searching strategies on the Internet. The study was aimed to analyze the relationship between university students’ strategies of information Internet search for educational tasks and style characteristics of their cognitive activities (styles of information coding, styles of information processing and styles of cognitive regulation). The study was based on the Level model of cognitive-style characteristics (Kholodnaya, 2002). Main methods of study were experimental modelling of educational situations and testing for assessment of students’ styles of information coding, information processing and cognitive regulation. The results of experimental study allowed to identify two strategies of educational online searching (“direct online searching” and “improving online searching”) and their relationship with students’ cognitive characteristics and academic achievements: students’ strategies of educational online search are determined primarily by the characteristics of cognitive regulation. The results did not reveal a direct link between strategies educational online search and academic achievement.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of verbal-imagery cognitive styles of information searching behavior of users in using the Web. Design/methodology/approach – In all, 44 participants were recruited for this study. The participants’ cognitive styles were measured by using Riding's Cognitive Style Analysis test. Three search tasks were designed based on Kim's search task definitions. Moreover, an individual lab session was arranged and then participants’ memos were analyzed using content analysis. Findings – In all, 48 strategies in four categories of behaviors in searching the Web were identified. There were associations between users’ cognitive styles and their information searching behavior. The participants’ selection of the search initiation behaviors varied, so that imagers suffered from more varied initial behavior than verbalizers. The verbalizers tended to search in a narrow area, then broadening the area and following structured navigation and reading behavior to process information, while imagers tended to search in a general area, then narrowing down the search and adopting mixed navigational styles and mixed behaviors to process information. This study revealed that there was a difference in search performance of verbalizers and imagers descriptively, as verbalizers spent more time compared to imagers and imagers visited more nodes than verbalizers for the tasks completion. In addition, the task was an important variable influencing the search performance. Based on the key findings (search initiation behaviors, formulating search queries, navigational behaviors, information processing behaviors), a conceptual pattern of Web searching and cognitive styles is presented. Research limitations/implications – The study provides a new understanding of Web users’ information search behavior based on cognitive styles which contributes to the theoretical basis of Web search research. It also raises various questions within the context of user studies Originality/value – The paper adopted a mixed approach in the area of information searching on the Web. A valuable contribution lies in the methods developed.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how different cognitive style groups use electronic journals via mobile devices, with an emphasis on the use of search mechanisms, the approaches to judge the relevance and to refine the results, the use of horizontal screens, and on the influence of negative emotions. Design/methodology/approach – Participants’ cognitive styles were identified as Holists and Serialists with Ford's Study Preference Questionnaire. The behaviour of the participants interacting with the ScienceDirect was observed and was analysed with both traditional statistics and data mining. Findings – Holists prefer to use multiple searches when undertaking the Expert Search only, which is a complex search mechanism. Conversely, Serialists have a tendency to use multiple searches, irrespective of the complexity of search mechanisms. Additionally, the Expert Search may be helpful for Serialists while the Basic Search seems beneficial to Holists. Regarding the judgement of relevance, Holists tend to use a variety of approaches while Serialists prefer to use a single approach. In general, the major results of this study confirm those of Vilar and Žumer (2008). Originality/value – The novelty of this study covers two aspects. One is to examine the behaviour of Holists and Serialists in the mobile context of electronic journals and the other is to analyse data with an integrative approach that combines both traditional statistics and data mining. The former contributes to the understandings of how to design mobile electronic journals that can accommodate the needs of different cognitive style groups. The latter can not only strengthen the reliability of the results obtained from traditional statistics, but also discover findings neglected by traditional statistics.

Abstract:
Online searchers in Australia were studied through six sets of variables: backgrounds, experience, attitudes, behaviours, styles and satisfaction. A mailed questionnaire attracted a response rate of 84.5 per cent. Respondents were drawn equally from academic and special libraries. Those in special libraries tended to be more satisfied with their searches, and favoured adaptability but not preplanning. Those whose organisations levied charges appeared to search less often and to have less faith in controlled vocabularies. A minority with computational backgrounds tended to have more searching experience. Many respondents searched infrequently and had conducted low total numbers of searches. Those searching more often were less cost conscious, and more in favour of trial-and-error and reviewing retrieved titles. Searchers who had conducted more searches favoured trial-and-error , browsing and reviewing retrieved titles. Controlled vocabularies, adaptability (related to a disinclination to review retrieved titles), trial-and-error and browsing were favoured . Fidel's conceptualist style tended to be adopted by those favouring trial-and-error. Her operationalist style was considered routine and positively related to perceived user satisfaction with searches. Some concern about cost was related to a tendency to plan alternative strategies.

Solomon, Ryan. "In Search of Copia: Using Rhetoric to Teach Creative Writing." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2007. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1011.

Full text
Abstract:
James Berlin, in his book Rhetoric and Reality, points out that our disparate epistemologies lead to inevitable classroom practices, which mean that different epistemologies impact our pedagogical approach and enforce certain views about the role and function of writing in classrooms. This thesis highlights the impact of Romantic beliefs about writing on creative writing pedagogy, as well as exploring how those beliefs hamper the critical function of the workshop. Romantic beliefs have enforced the idea that talent and genius is most important in creative writing, and that writing is spontaneous, organic, original, and expressive. Because of this, many creative writing teachers have come to believe that a structured pedagogical approach hampers creative writing, but this creates problems in workshop where the need for collaborative criticism conflicts with Romantic beliefs. The result is that students, who are assumed to know how to offer effective criticism, struggle to negotiate expressive ideals as opposed to critical response. This thesis therefore explores the problems of Romantic beliefs in detail. This thesis proposes the classical rhetorical curriculum, supported by appropriate rhetorical theory, as a solution to the problems created by Romantic beliefs. This curriculum provides a detailed, structured approach to teaching writing, which is best highlighted by the way it combined stylistic analysis together with production; therefore, helping students use criticism as a way to develop their writing. In doing so, I look at a rhetorical approach to style as detailed by Richard Lanham and Winston Weathers who emphasize helping students with stylistic analysis by helping students understand the function of style. Also, because I recognize that creative writers are often resistant to any discussion of the links between creative writing and rhetoric, this thesis emphasizes the critical links between creative writing and rhetoric, thereby showing that the view of rhetoric held by creative writers is a substantially reduced view of a more dynamic discipline. The truth is the two disciplines share a fundamental critical purpose aimed at assisting student in the production of new texts, and therefore, because the two disciplines have a great deal in common, there is a viable opportunity to build on their theoretical links in order to enhance pedagogy in both disciplines. Therefore, this thesis looks at some specific ways that the classical rhetorical curriculum can be applied within the constraints of the contemporary creative writing classroom.

Shrestha, Saurav. "The effect of search engine results page presentation style on user satisfaction and eye movements." Diss., Wichita State University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/5589.

Full text
Abstract:
Eye movement on a web page is determined by the layout of the page presented to the user (Nielsen, 2006; Shrestha et al., 2007, 2008). A typical search engine results page layout suffers from a hierarchical bias with higher fixations on the top and lower fixations on the bottom areas of interest (Granka et al., 2004; Joachims et al., 2005; Dumais et al., 2010; Curtell et al., 2007; Guan et al., 2007). This study compared the usability and eye movement data of participants searching a traditional SERP layout and two alternative layouts, grid and tabular. Results showed that while participants indicated a higher preference for the traditional layout, no differences in success, satisfaction, mental workload, or perceived difficulty were found across the 3 layouts for either informational or navigational tasks. Participants were found to look at the page more times and for longer when completing informational tasks compared to navigational tasks regardless of the layout presented to them. Participants looked at the top portion of the page more than the bottom when presented with the traditional or the tabular layout in both the task conditions. For the informational task condition, the top portion of the page was viewed for longer and for the navigational task condition, the bottom portion of the page was view for longer for both the traditional and the tabular layouts. When presented with the grid layout, participants were found to view the content vertically by column starting on the left column, then to the right: the left column was viewed more than the right column but the right column was viewed for longer than the left column regardless of the task condition. Moreover, it was found that participants fixated on the right column of the grid layout more than twice as much as they fixated on the bottom portion of the traditional layout. Compared to the bottom portion of the tabular layout, participants fixated 50% more on the right column of the grid layout. This, along with its scroll-less interface, shows the advantage of the grid layout over both the traditional and the tabular layouts. In terms of layout preference, participants equally preferred the traditional and the grid layout. It was found that the tabular layout was the easiest for the participants to parse out what element of the search results they wanted to fixate to effectively complete the given task: this meant that participants could fixate on the title and the text snippet portion of the search result and ignore the URL portion while completing informational tasks and in the same manner participants could fixate on the URL and the title and ignore the text snippet more effectively than on the traditional or the grid layouts when completing navigational tasks. This shows the advantage of the tabular layout when the user is interested in a specific type of information. The advantage of the uniqueness of their layouts may have potential with their application in proper contexts.

Abstract:
Abstract Semantic technologies offer significant potential for improving data search applications. Ongoing work thrives to equip data catalogs with new semantic search features to supplement existing keyword search and browsing capabilities. In particular within the social sciences, searching and reusing data is essential to foster efficient research. In this paper, we introduce an approach and experimental results aimed at improving interoperability and findability of social sciences survey items. Our contributions include a conceptual model for semantically representing survey items and questions, detailing meaningful dimensions of items, as well as experimental results geared towards the automated prediction of such item features using state-of-the-art machine learning models. Dimensions of interest include, for instance, references to geolocation and time periods or the scope and style of particular questions. We define classification tasks using neural and traditional machine learning models combined with sentence structure features. Applications of our work include semantic and faceted search for questions as part of our GESIS Search. We also provide the lifted data as a knowledge graph via a SPARQL endpoint for further reuse and sharing.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test is known to be a quick and easy way to build good team dynamics. However the workplace is not always built around four person teams that you can easily change based on individual personalities. Research has shown that the various MBTI personalities associate with different learning styles. This gives reason to believe that different individual designers may synthesize data and conceptualize ideas differently in a design environment. If this is true, designers may need a customizable environment or they may need to explore different ways to achieve their potential. This paper examines how individuals with different MBTI personality types take in and view information during the conceptualization stages of product design and whether the way information is inputed is vital to an innovative product design.

Abstract:
Individual designers demonstrate different styles of ideation in conceptual design. These styles have been quantified and described primarily through protocol, think-aloud studies that examine a designer’s thought sequence during ideation. In this paper, we examine ideation style with an outcome-based approach, examining style on a continuum of rate of variety, or solution space exploration rate. We investigate the relationship between this exploration rate and creativity factors of quality and novelty using a quantitative study of problem-solving skills. We found a significant positive correlation between broad-search style and novelty and a significant positive correlation between detail-search style and quality of ideas. These correlations are in agreement with protocol studies found in literature. We also identified quantity of ideas as a possible confounding factor and discuss potential improvements to these types of studies.

Abstract:
The reliable fraction of information is an attractive score for quantifying (functional) dependencies in high-dimensional data. In this paper, we systematically explore the algorithmic implications of using this measure for optimization. We show that the problem is NP-hard, justifying worst-case exponential-time as well as heuristic search methods. We then substantially improve the practical performance for both optimization styles by deriving a novel admissible bounding function that has an unbounded potential for additional pruning over the previously proposed one. Finally, we empirically investigate the approximation ratio of the greedy algorithm and show that it produces highly competitive results in a fraction of time needed for complete branch-and-bound style search.

Abstract:
Abstract: The paper deals with Le Corbusier’s connection to the term “style”. A classification of his work in specific architectural styles is discussed, followed by a description of the procedure through which the style of the man Le Corbusier was constructed; in an attempt to search meaning in his continual stylistic shifts and the rationale that kept his lifetime’s work and identity strongly compact when we consider him retrospectively. Keywords: Le Corbusier; Style; Stylistic Shifts. Palabras clave: Le Corbusier; Estilo; Cambios Estilísticos. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/LC2015.2015.799

Abstract:
Delivering course content via portable/mobile audio players can be a part of an effective selfregulatory strategy that also accommodates multiple learning styles while overcoming intrusive thoughts and the anxiety that accompanies them. As a result, academic performance can improve, while increasing self-concept and self-efficacy. Preliminary results of a literature search tracing the impact of intrusive thoughts on performance and a survey of students in extreme conditions where intrusive thoughts are common, suggest that audio downloaded via podcast and played on mobile players can be an effective strategy for combating intrusive thoughts. The combination of surveys and published research also suggested that further studies are warranted in order to explore the most appropriate podcast-based solution to numerous varieties of negative cognitive and emotional responses.

Abstract:
The definition used for learning objects considers them as any digital entity which can be used, reused or referenced during a technology-mediated learning process. Nowadays, this concept has became essential to the development of pedagogical content to be used in large scale educational projects to which are engaged a wide number of educational agents - students, teachers and faculty staff. Guaranteeing reusability of pedagogical content allows its use on different contexts. Therefore, a repository of learning objects that has a well-defined metadata structure can be used to customize learning processes. Recent researches on Learning Object have been contributing on the search of patterns for instructional content development, in order to make them adaptive, generic, portable and scalable enough to improve their potential for reusability. Besides, a wide range of virtual learning environments has been proposed to support these learning objects, with their properties and characteristics. Nonetheless, the great challenge still remains on how adaptive can a learning object be. There are several levels of adaptation that can be reached, and these levels can be established regarding to a wide range of different aspects on teaching-learning processes, varying from the need of keeping track of students’ evolution on building a specified piece of desired knowledge, until their learning styles, a multi-dimensional measure that are not only individual-dependant, but are also influenced by a range of factors so diverse as environment, inter-relational issues and psychological aspects related to how a student deal with certain sort of knowledge to be constructed, or skill to be developed. An architecture for learning objects repositories that intends to be general enough to support different pedagogical approaches and adaptation levels is presented. Such architecture is based on five different but co-related tiers: Syllabus Tier, which encapsulates all organization of learning objects that persist on the Reusable Learning Objects Tier. To select and present these objects in a way that adaptation to students’ background, learning styles and temporal motivation is responsibility of Apprentice Model Tier and Learning Styles Tier, that together drive Presentation Tier to dynamically built the most adequate interface to each student. Therefore, multiple presentations for the same learning object can make learning process more significant to students.
