At the first time, plastic materials were produced to facilitate various activities of human life. Plastic materials that are flexible and durable have been used by humans to meet various needs to support their daily activities. Starting from human activities from waking up to going back to sleep, nowadays it cannot be separated from the use of plastic materials. This then makes humans "addicted" to plastic materials. It is as if human life cannot be separated from the use of plastic materials. Various research results in the field of pollution both on land and the sea, plastic materials that are not managed properly can contaminate human life, either directly or indirectly, to food sources, especially food from the sea.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective To investigate the relationships between fish/seafood consumption patterns and food security status among First Nations (FN) communities in Canada. We estimated the contribution of fish/seafood to daily nutrient requirements. Barriers to traditional food (TF) access including fish were summarized. Methods Data were collected by the First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study (2008–2018). The sample of this participatory study comprised 6258 randomly selected FN adults. Fish/seafood consumption was estimated with a food frequency questionnaire. Food security status was assessed with the Household Food Security Survey Module. The contribution of fish/seafood to protein, n-3 fatty acid, vitamin (A, B12, D, niacin) and mineral (selenium, zinc) requirements was assessed by comparison to Dietary Reference Intakes. Results Regional differences were observed in fish/seafood consumption patterns and their relationship with food security status. In the eastern regions (Ontario, Quebec/Labrador and the Atlantic region), consumption of fish/seafood and other TF was significantly higher among food insecure compared with food secure FN participants. Severely food insecure men (particularly in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec/Labrador and the Atlantic region) tended to eat a higher amount of TF, including fish/seafood, compared with food secure and moderately food insecure men, while no difference was observed in women. Fish/seafood provided good sources of selected nutrients. However, the high cost of harvesting equipment, industry-related activities and climate change reduce access to fish/seafood and other wildlife. Conclusion Fish/seafood continues to be vital to the diet of FN communities. Focusing on policies that support FN increased access to fish/seafood has the potential to decrease food insecurity and support sustainable livelihoods. Future policies should focus on socio-economic determinants of food insecurity and support traditional harvesting and sustainable fisheries among FN communities.

Abstract:
Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a serious global environmental crime. It can lead to the collapse of important fisheries and the destruction of marine habitats, and it also directly threatens the food security and economies of developing countries, affecting millions of people who depend on fisheries for survival. IUU fishing also undermines the sustainability of seafood stocks of many developed countries and directly impacts these countries’ legal commercial fishing industries. Several regulatory mechanisms have been put in place at international, regional, and country levels to address the problem, but the implementation of these regulations remains a challenge. This article examines the problem of IUU fishing and seafood fraud through the application of the crime script analysis technique to (1) describe IUU fishing and seafood fraud, (2) highlight the regulations designed to address IUU fishing and seafood fraud, and (3) offer recommendations that link piecemeal and grand crime prevention policy responses to strategies that could be used by practitioners to address these problems more effectively.

Objectives: The aim of present study was to evaluate the sanitary characteristics associated to the Quality and Identity Standards of the frozen seafood provided for the 2nd MR by 21st SD; Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to optimize the supply process; Propose a strategic approach to mitigate supply non-compliances. Methods: Were performed seven Focus Groups, a SWOT analysis and the swot factors were weighted with the application of the Analytical Hierarchy Process AHP. Results: The frozen seafood supply process of the 2nd MR, centralized in the 21st SD, needs a technical, operational and documental restructuration, to ensure the maximum efficiency in the seafood purchase, storage and distribution; It is very important the participation of specialized Officers in the bind writing process. Conclusion: It is recommended the implementation of FSMS and qualify the staff. The adoption of strategies with focus in the Food Security is necessary to ensure a good and safety nutrition and reaching the results can promote the development of social changes through qualifing officers and soldiers.

Abstract:
This study is aimed at investigating the global trend in research activities involving seafood and antibiotics based on published research output articles. Peer reviewed articles published in the last two decades involving seafood and antibiotics were searched on the Scopus database using the search words “seafood” and “antibiotics’’. The retrieved data were then analyzed based on the total research outputs, countries and affiliation of authors, sources of funding, keywords used by the authors, citations and collaborations using both add-on analytical tool, Microsoft Excel and VOS viewer for data visualization. A total of 447 research outputs by 710 authors affiliated with 1173 institutions from 74 countries using 1051 keywords were obtained. Original research articles accounted for the highest percentage (87.7%) and published across 166 different peer-reviewed journals. Most of the original research articles were published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology 27(16.3%). Khan, A. A. from the Division of Microbiology; National Centre for Toxicological Research, United States, was the most productive author with 10 (2.2%) publications while the National Natural Science Foundation of China was the highest funding institution with 22 (4.9%) and the United States of America was the most productive with 91 (20.4%) research outputs followed by China with 70 (15.7%) research outputs. Over the last two decades (1999 – 2019), there has been an exponential (r2=0.91) increase in seafood and antibiotics related research activities. The majority of these research activities were from America, Asia and Europe. There is need for international scientific collaboration between the leading researchers and researchers from developing countries in seafood research to help mitigate food loss, enhance food security, and increase the productivity of early career researchers.

Food authenticity, traceability and provenance are emerging issues of major concern for consumers, industries and regulatory bodies worldwide. In addition, both food safety and security are an intrinsic component of food quality where the above issues are key in modern traceability and management systems. It has been reported that substitution of a high-quality species by less expensive ones might be a frequent practice in seafood products such as fish and shellfish. In this type of products, the source (e.g., origin) and identification of the species are complex. Although different countries have implemented strict regulations and labelling protocols, these issues still are of concern. This article briefly reviews some of the most recent applications of vibrational spectroscopy (near and mid infrared, Raman) combined with chemometrics to target some of these issues in the seafood and fish industries.

La sécurité alimentaire, qui est la garantie de l’approvisionnement et de la qualité des aliments tout en gérant les ressources de manière durable, est intrinsèquement liée à la connaissance de la biologie et l’écologie des espèces consommées. Dans un contexte de dérèglement climatique menaçant la salubrité des produits de la mer, il est donc nécessaire d’établir un référentiel sur le fonctionnement des systèmes marins, ainsi que sur l’occurrence des nutriments et des contaminants dans les produits de la mer. C’est d’autant plus important pour les Petits Etats Insulaires en Développement (PEID), qui dépendent des ressources marines pour leur subsistance, et où les produits de la pêche sont la première source de protéines et micronutriments (éléments traces essentiels) pour les populations locales. Malgré l’importance des systèmes tropicaux pour la sécurité alimentaire, ces systèmes sont peu étudiés comparés aux systèmes polaires et tempérés. Cette thèse vise à mieux comprendre le fonctionnement des systèmes marins tropicaux, et à établir un référentiel sur l’occurrence des micronutriments et des contaminants métalliques dans les produits de la pêche aux Seychelles (Océan Indien), un PEID tropical. En étudiant les concentrations en éléments traces aux niveaux inter- et intraspécifique, nous avons identifié différents facteurs intrinsèques et extrinsèques influençant la bioaccumulation de ces éléments dans les ressources marines tropicales. Nous avons aussi montré l’importance de considérer différentes échelles (individu, espèce et écosystème) pour mieux comprendre l’occurrence des éléments traces essentiels et non-essentiels dans les produits de la mer
Food security, that is guarantying food supply and quality while sustainably managing resources, is closely linked to knowing the biology and ecology of consumed species. In a context of global changes that are threatening seafood safety, it is thus necessary to establish baselines on marine ecosystem functioning, as well as nutrient availability and contamination occurrence in seafood. This is all the more important in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), where populations rely on marine resources for their subsistence, and where capture fisheries resources are the main sources of proteins and micronutrients (i.e. essential trace elements) in local populations’ diet. In spite of the importance of tropical systems in ensuring food security, they remain largely understudied compared to polar and temperate systems. This thesis thus aims to better understand the functioning of tropical marine systems, and to establish a baseline on micronutrient availability and metal(loid) contamination in a wide diversity of capture fisheries resources from the Seychelles (Western Indian Ocean), a tropical SIDS. By investigating trace element concentration patterns at the inter- and intraspecific levels, it was possible to identify intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing trace element bioaccumulation in tropical capture fisheries resources. We thus highlighted the importance of considering different scales (individual, species, and ecosystem) to better understand essential trace element availability and non-essential trace element occurrence in seafood

AbstractThis chapter sheds light on Russia’s changed role in the international seafood trade system and discusses to what extent the new more export-oriented turn is sustainable. Russia’s seafood trade policy has changed significantly over time, from directing just about all of the production to the domestic market during the Soviet period, to increasingly pursuing a dual strategy as both an importer and exporter from 2000 onwards. The first section gives a brief account of Soviet-era seafood production and trade. The second part offers a perspective on seafood trade during the early post-Soviet period. The third part examines how the introduction of Food Security Doctrines and the 2014 embargo have influenced Russia’s seafood trade. The final section provides an outlook for the future. Similar to agriculture, concerns over food security are likely to lead to a reduced role as a seafood importer and a larger role as a seafood exporter. The structure of Russia’s seafood exports will continue to tilt towards Asian markets, with European markets assuming a secondary role.

AbstractSeafood is an important food source, and this chapter addresses the food safety concerns related to plastic particles in different seafood. Here we focus on those species which are commonly consumed by humans, such as bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods, echinoderms, crustaceans, and finfish. The objectives of this chapter are to (1) outline the major sources, fate, and transport dynamics of microplastics in marine ecosystems, (2) provide a critical assessment and synthesis of microplastics in seafood taxa commonly consumed by humans, (3) discuss the implications of microplastics with regard to human health risk assessments, and (4) suggest future research priorities and recommendations for assessing microplastics in marine ecosystems in the context of global food security and ocean and human health.

Abstract In shallow marine sediments, gas accumulations and hydrates are significant geohazards to subsea infrastructure, drilling, and production. Therefore, predicting their occurrence is crucial to ensure offshore drilling safety and submarine infrastructure security. In this study, we generate predictions with uncertainty estimates with the goal of providing ageohazard assessment before any shallow hazard surveys are performed.We used a geospatial machine learning model to predict total organic carbon (TOC) and porosity at the seafloor in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and model sedimentation and consolidation in one dimension (1D) with microbial methanogenesis. Our model assumed that seafloor organic carbon is the source material for shallow hydrocarbon occurrences. The machine learning model outputs and uncertainties were sampled statistically to generate a suite of seafloor property realizations that were fed into our 1D model. Our predictions illustrate that gas and hydrate are more likely to be present along the shelf where seafloor TOC values are high, and are less likely to be present in deepwater areas (>500 m water depth) where seafloor TOC values are low. The results show that shallow water depth, lower sedimentation rate, and higher seafloor TOC are correlated with higher predicted gas saturations and shallower gas accumulation.Deepwater areas with significant reported oil production, such as AlaminosCanyon Block 857 (Great White), Green Canyon Block 640 (Tahiti/Caesar/Tonga), and Garden Banks Block 215 (Baldpate/Conger), are less likely to have shallow gas hazards. Any seafloor seeps identified in areas of high drilling activity likely originate from deep reservoirs, not from shallow gas accumulation.This work provides granular predictions of shallow geohazards on a basin scale and offers a holistic approach to identifying shallow hazards using big data and machine learning techniques. Abstract In shallow marine sediments, gas accumulations and hydrates are significant geohazards to subsea infrastructure, drilling, and production. Therefore, predicting their occurrence is crucial to ensure offshore drilling safety and submarine infrastructure security. In this study, we generate predictions with uncertainty estimates with the goal of providing ageohazard assessment before any shallow hazard surveys are performed.We used a geospatial machine learning model to predict total organic carbon (TOC) and porosity at the seafloor in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and model sedimentation and consolidation in one dimension (1D) with microbial methanogenesis. Our model assumed that seafloor organic carbon is the source material for shallow hydrocarbon occurrences. The machine learning model outputs and uncertainties were sampled statistically to generate a suite of seafloor property realizations that were fed into our 1D model. Our predictions illustrate that gas and hydrate are more likely to be present along the shelf where seafloor TOC values are high, and are less likely to be present in deepwater areas (>500 m water depth) where seafloor TOC values are low. The results show that shallow water depth, lower sedimentation rate, and higher seafloor TOC are correlated with higher predicted gas saturations and shallower gas accumulation.Deepwater areas with significant reported oil production, such as AlaminosCanyon Block 857 (Great White), Green Canyon Block 640 (Tahiti/Caesar/Tonga), and Garden Banks Block 215 (Baldpate/Conger), are less likely to have shallow gas hazards. Any seafloor seeps identified in areas of high drilling activity likely originate from deep reservoirs, not from shallow gas accumulation.This work provides granular predictions of shallow geohazards on a basin scale and offers a holistic approach to identifying shallow hazards using big data and machine learning techniques. The SeaWolf is beside the UUV’s SeaFox and SeaOtter one of the core vehicles of the ATLAS UUV family. It is an HAUV (Hybrid Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) which can be used completely autonomous (AUV) or, equipped with a broadband fibre-optic cable connection to the surface, as an ROV respective as a semi AUV. Such a connection permits both, a total human control of the vehicle or solely an online data transfer from the vehicle to the control station and vice versa. The system is based on its general design philosophy on the small and very successful underwater vehicle SeaFox, which is sold over 2000 times. An outstanding SeaWolf characteristic is its ability to operate alone or in a team whereas its autonomy varies from fully autonomous, i.e. independently of the other team members, to an absolute dependency, i.e. under complete control of one or more team members. The level of the so called Adaptive Autonomy depends thereby on the mission complexity for the team or for the individual member. The SeaWolf is medium sized with 2m length and 50cm maximum diameter. Its weight is between 100kg and 110kg with 30kg payload included. The payload can be a customer specific configuration and will be integrated into the vehicle by plug and play. The quality of the navigation system is selectable by the customer as well. It reaches from a simple TCM based unit up to a DVL and GPS supported high performance inertial measurement unit. The vehicle’s maximum speed is 8kts and with the aid of 5 propulsion devices, not only operating in current but also a high manoeuvrability is guaranteed. The SeaWolf is designed for 300m diving depth, with an option for 600m. Its application scope extends from of all kinds of underwater inspection and monitoring, over scientific applications up to the use in the security area. The paper shows the SeaWolf involvement in the UUV family, deals with the used technologies and shows selected applications from the maritime security domain.

Occurring as a set of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, rare earth elements such as neodymium are necessary for the development of mobile phones and magnet motors. Although securing rare earth elements is essential for economic growth of all nations, their demand is rapidly expanding among global powers such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Rare earth element deposits were discovered in the seafloor near hydrothermal vents in the 1980s. Japan has the sixth largest exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and is abundant in underwater natural resources such as a cobalt and a manganese mine. Because underwater exploration of rare earth elements was deemed unprofitable, the practice was suspended. Current advancements in underwater robotics, however, have led to economic viability in this venture. Such developments have resulted in the increased use of remote sensing with sonars on unmanned underwater vehicles. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) developed a cruising autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) known as Urashima. This AUV performed its first sea trial in 2000, and cruise for 317 km without recharging or refueling in 2005 as a world record at the time. The first mission of Urashima was a vast sea exploration to investigate worldwide environmental crises such as global warming. However, the purpose of these missions has since then shifted primarily to the exploration of underwater natural resources. In addition, JAMSTEC developed a synthetic aperture sonar on a neutral buoyancy towfish in 2010. This underwater exploration system, known as Kyouryuu, scanned Wakamiko caldera at the sea bottom in Kagoshima Bay where volcanic activity was evident. Numerous hot-water flows from hydrothermal vents were clearly recorded. In addition, many dormant chimneys were detected. These features provide important data for estimating the distribution of hydrothermal vents and chimneys in addition to their transitions.
