Abstract:
EN This paper explores the strategies chosen by Australian learners of Italian when performing emailed apologies in Italian. Through a modified discourse completion task, 42 participants produced a total of 317 emails. This paper presents an adapted typology of these emailed apologies in Italian which, while drawing on previous literature, has been tailored to be more specific to and therefore more effective in the analysis of the data collected in this project. It was found that the apology act as performed by Australian learners of Italian consists of two principal components, the apology and the repair, the latter of which is optional but is usually included. In addition, supportive strategies can be included prior to or following either of these components to strengthen the illocutionary force of the apology act. The analysis also evidenced that while a broad speech act structure can be identified, the apology act is a complex phenomenon which can be performed with great variation. Abstract:
We present and analyze the possibility of using optical u-band luminosities to estimate star-formation rates (SFRs) of galaxies based on the data from the South Galactic Cap u. band Sky Survey (SCUSS), which provides a deep u-band photometric survey covering about 5000 deg(2) of the South Galactic Cap. Based on two samples of normal star-forming galaxies selected by the. BPT diagram, we explore the correlations between u-band, H alpha, and IR luminosities by combing SCUSS data with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The attenuation-corrected u-band luminosities are tightly correlated with the Balmer decrement-corrected Ha luminosities with an rms scatter of similar to 0.17 dex. The IR-corrected u luminosities are derived based on the correlations between the attenuation of u-band luminosities and WISE. 12 (or 22) mu m luminosities, and then calibrated with the Balmer-corrected Ha luminosities. The systematic residuals of these calibrations are tested against the physical properties over the ranges covered by our sample objects. We find that the best-fitting nonlinear relations are better than the linear ones and recommended to be applied in the measurement of SFRs. The systematic deviations mainly come from the pollution of old stellar population and the effect of dust extinction; therefore,. a. more detailed analysis is needed in future work.

Abstract:

Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/12027.

Full text
Abstract:

Helgesen, Ann Karin. "Patient participation in everyday life in special care units for persons with dementia." Doctoral thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-29208.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to acquire knowledge about patient participation in everyday life of persons with dementia living in SCUs in nursing homes. Data collection and analysis in studies I-III was carried out according to Grounded Theory. Data was collected by open non- participant observations during 51 hours, and conversations with 8 residents and 17 health care personnel (I), interviews carried out twice with 12 relatives (II) and 11 nursing personnel (III), and by a study specific questionnaire based on the findings from study I-II to 233 relatives (IV). Descriptive and non-parametric statistics were used (IV). Presence of nursing personnel in body, mind and morality was found to be the prerequisite for patient participation (I). This required personnel with high competence in dementia care, commitment to and interest in the resident, and continuity in their work (I, III). Wellbeing and dignity in the resident’s everyday life was found to be the most important goal, not necessarily a high level of patient participation (II-III). The level of participation had to be adjusted to the resident’s ability and wish to take part in decisions in the very moment. However, the level was often primarily adjusted to suit the personnel’s ideas about how to carry out daily care (I, III). Relatives had an important role in the participation process by interacting, and exchanging information, with the personnel. By forming a basis for individualised care in this way, relatives made a difference to the resident’s everyday life and contributed to their wellbeing and dignity (II-IV). The SCU’s context also affected patient participation (I-IV). Patient participation must be given attention by leaders and be prioritised in dementia care. Nursing personnel can enhance patient participation by promoting relatives’ partaking in the participation process, as this has potential for further contributing to quality of care.

Abstract:
The positive impact of stroke care units (SCUs) on patient outcome has been previously reported. In this study, long-term stroke patients that are formally admitted to teaching-hospitals are compared with and without SCUs. The authors focus on the patients’ experience with ongoing care or formal transfers following current care as this cohort is often high users of the system with associated high costs. Bayesian Networks were employed to analyze routinely collected public-hospital administrative data. The results illustrate that the teaching-hospitals with SCUs, while achieving shorter length of stay, in fact deal with younger patients with lower overall patient complexity than non-SCU teaching-hospitals. Other differences include SCUs predominantly treating subarachnoid hemorrhages whereas the non-SCUs treat more cerebral infarctions. This study illustrates the power of Bayesian Networks to expose the nature of caseload and outcomes recorded in hospital-administrative data as a means to gain insight on current practice and create opportunities for benchmarking and improving care.

The purpose of this article is to investigate complaint strategies used by Italian and Russian speakers as well as interlanguage complaints of Russians in an Italian L2 context. The sample of the study consists of 23 subjects from each group. The data for the research were elicited by means of a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) involving five stimuli with a short description of a situation which codifies basic information on social variables. This research attempts to revisit the concept of appropriateness and has important implications for non-native speakers who are learning about speech acts.
