Abstract:

Abstract:
My portfolio consists of a number of works written for wind and brass ensembles, exploring traditional and alternative forms of textures, sounds and compositional methods. • The Hunter's Blade - A brass band work comprising three different styles. The first is wild, using folk music to create a rural scene with dramatic dynamics, attack of notes, and time changes. The second and third styles employ Jazz and popular harmonies to create an urban scene. • Fiero - A work for Brass Band with cornet soloist. This piece explores technical and lyrical aspects of playing for both soloist and band. It's based around the character of the soloist for whom it was written. The piece has mood swings ranging from wild and argumentative to smooth and sensitive, but is always performed with 'Fiero' - the Italian word for 'proud'. • Leviathan - A piece for Tuba and Piano. This work explores a range of techniques available to the modern tuba player, from the standard bass accompaniment to virtuosic soloist, displaying advanced technical ability, extended range, and multiphonics, through a range of styles from funk to classical. • Heroes of Erin - A four movement work for brass band based on Irish folk music. This features solos from the flugel, tenor horn and cornet, as well as challenging material for the band. The first movement uses a traditional tune with new harmonies and structure; the second combines Irish with a Middle Eastern style; the third is a solemn tune with a meandering harmonic progression; and the fourth is a combination of a jig and a hornpipe. • Mosaic Project - A piece exploring sounds and textures. Composed using verbal instructions to an ensemble, rather than written parts, this allowed for much freedom of expression and interpretation from the performers, within some parameters. • / Sit On Acid - A piece which features a clash of styles where the brass band takes on acid house music. A series of compromises were made in order to create a fusion. • Silhouette - A further step in the bringing together of styles. This time a combination of Latin, Jazz, Norwegian Folk and Popular Music are thrown into the mix. • Dawn of a New Age - 'Fanfare and Theme'. A rousing musical statement heralding the beginning of a new era. The piece is short, opening with a fanfare which is present throughout, and includes a theme representing pride and achievement. • The Fire and the Flood - A large work for Brass Band. This piece is based around the natural cataclysmic phenomena that occur on our planet. The music suggests volcanic eruptions, pyroclastic flows, meteorites and tsunamis - the natural disasters that effect our planet. There are a lot of influences in this work from composers such as Stravinsky and MacMillan.

Abstract:
The title of the piece is Sanskrit, and derives from Tibetan Buddhism (of which I am a practitioner). It is usually translated as 'wheel of time', or 'time-cycles'. The Kalachakra tradition represents a vast and profound body of teachings on the nature of time and the cosmos. Its central image is that of reality as a system of interlocking and interdependent time-cycles or 'wheels', from the cosmic scale of the stars, planets and seasons right down to the intimate periodicities of the human body: 'As above, so below'. This 'macrocosm-microcosm' time-structure is what I have tried to reflect in my piece. The piece is not meant, however, as a literal musical description of this cosmological model: rather it should be viewed as a metaphor, a parallel but ultimately musical process, obeying purely musical laws of attraction and repulsion, creation and destruction. Although Buddhism is not theistic in the conventional sense, it has a pantheon of sorts, with time personified in the form of the deity Kalachakra, a figure somewhat parallel to Shiva within the Hindu tradition ('Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds'). If the piece is illustrative in any sense then it is illustrative of the creative and destructive processes at work in the universe, but viewed here in a special sense as the body and limbs of the Adi-Buddha ('Cosmic Buddha'), the deity Kalachakra.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT; The inter-disciplinarity between music and visual art has been explored by leading theorists and philosophers, though very little exists in the area of the visual interpretation of graphic musical scores. This study looks at how the graphics of musical notation and symbols affect the performer in transforming them into sound, with particular reference to contemporary scores that use non¬conventional notation to create an interpretation through suggestion. Other sound-visual relationships are explored, including synaesthesia, temporality and the interconnection between work of art and audience or public. This dissertation aims to be an innovative study of contemporary musical scores, from a musical as well as visual perspective. Finally, it takes a step further with drawings of my own, directly inspired and motivated by the music. These no longer fulfil a conventionally notational function for the musician, yet the potential for a re-interpretation is ever-present.

Abstract:
1 score (xvii, 233 p.)
Throughout history, wondrous discoveries of science, like great pieces of music, have often come about through extraordinary feats of creativity, informed by deep rational thought yet not limited by it. Like science, music composition requires a mastery of its own technical features (instrumentation, orchestration, harmony, counterpoint, etc.), but neither music nor science can flourish when too much emphasis is placed upon the mechanical and not enough on the imagination. Composers have sometimes turned to mathematics as a tool for generating art though the systematization of musical elements. However, music often suffers from the conscious attempt by composers to bring it closer to the world of science and math through the serialization of musical material. This does not mean that mathematics and science do not play an important part in music of great expression. To be sure, composers have used simple mathematical concepts to discuss, analyze, and create music at every stage, whether consciously or unconsciously, since the beginning of Western music. These ideas are at the very heart of the great music of previous centuries, even if we celebrate those works more for their intrinsic beauty than their rational mechanics. It is the inventiveness and creativity that we find easy to value in music, but the science behind it also makes its creation possible. My symphony pays tribute to the marriage of creativity, not process, in scientific and musical thought, using the words of scientists and mathematicians as poetic texts, which generate musical imagery. I have chosen a series of quotations by notable scientists and mathematicians throughout history, which serve as textual introductions for each movement of the six-movement, approximately forty-five minute orchestral symphony. Each quotation makes reference to a specific scientific or mathematical discovery of its writer, or displays an aspect of his philosophy. The ideas expressed in the quotations serve as abstract inspiration and suggest musical imagery for each respective movement.

Abstract:
The historical correlation between intellectual functioning and academic achievement is largely based on individually administered achievement tests. However, the standards-based reform movement and recent special education legislation emphasize group-based achievement tests and allow for the use of state-based tests in eligibility determinations. Importantly, there does not exist research examining the IQ-achievement relationship using standards-based tests; thus, the current study evaluated the correlation between the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) and those tests comprising the North Carolina assessment program (i.e., End-of-Grade (EOG) tests). Five NC school psychologists provided archival information on students (n = 76) and results yielded support for the two hypotheses, which postulated that confidence intervals placed around correlation coefficients between Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) scores and EOG-Reading and âMathematics scores would capture r =.6, which is roughly halfway between the range of historical correlations. Implications regarding the validity of the WISC-IV and its potential use in identifying learning disabilities in which achievement is measured by tests linked to state standards, as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Many school districts and alternative certification programs use standardized interviews such as the TeacherInsight developed by the Gallup Organization. The TeacherInsight is a Web-based interview consisting of multiple choice and Likert-style items that produces a score between 0 and 100. The Gallup Organization claims that it helps hire the best teachers. The study analyzed the relationships between the TeacherInsight scores and the eight Professional Development Appraisal System (PDAS) domain scores for 527 teachers. The TeacherInsight scores produced a statistically significant correlation with only one of the eight PDAS domain scores. However, even that correlation (r = 0.14) was weak. All eight PDAS domain scores were only able to account for an additional 1.9% of the variance of TeacherInsight scores, above and beyond what was explained by the teachers' age, gender, years of experience, and highest degree earned. Another finding was that 47.4% of the teachers hired had TeacherInsight scores below the district recommended cutoff score of 67. The findings do not support the ability of the TeacherInsight to identify more effective teachers, based on Professional Development Appraisal System scores. The findings also cast doubt on the extent of consideration that principals in this district give the TeacherInsight scores during the selection process. Recommendations for future studies are provided.

Stern, Felix. "Sustainability scores for portfolio performance." Thesis, KTH, Matematisk statistik, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-288502.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, the traditional methods of only using ESG scores to screen stocks for sustainable portfolios is broadened. The selection of securities for portfolios will instead depend on aggregation, weighting and normalization of a wider set of sustainability variables, in turn creating more all-encompassing sustainability scores. Using these scores, the aim is to implement them in index tracking portfolios. These portfolios combines a hybrid approach between active and passive investment, with the aim of creating sustainable enhanced index funds that can beat the index without adding significant risk. Additionally, this allows for comparison of how different combinations and levels of sustainability affects returns, risk and index tracking. The results that are obtained shows that in the scenario presented in the thesis, it is possible to create a sustainability score which both increases the average sustainability of portfolios, and yields risk adjusted returns. We also studied how a net increase in sustainability scores over a control portfolio results in higher active returns, and eventually a small drop off in information ratio as we apply too strong of a sustainability constraint to our portfolios. The combination of sustainability scores which showed the highest risk adjusted returns was created using equal parts z-scored ESG ratings, ESG risk ratings and ESG momentum.

Gaines, Rodney P. "Comparison of Anthropometric Measures of Competitive Bodybuilders to Judges' Scores and a Comparison of Judges' Scores." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29253.

Full text
Abstract:
This research compared physical characteristics of bodybuilders to judges' rankings, and compared the judges' rankings across three levels of judges: Elite, Trained, and Untrained. Twenty-nine male and nine female bodybuilding athletes consented to anthropometric and circumference measurements. The independent variables in this study were bodyfat, fat-free weight, and proportionality of muscle. Three groups of judges ranked male and female athletes in the Open, Novice, Collegiate, and Masters divisions. The measurements of proportionality of muscle, bodyfat, girths, and fat-free weight were analyzed using simple and multiple regression. The judges' rankings in each class were compared using reliability coefficients, correlation, repeated measures analysis of variance, and the generalized theory for inter-rater reliability. There were significant correlations between the Elite judges' rankings and bodyfat in the Men's Open lightweight class. The Trained and Elite judges' rankings were significantly correlated with bodyfat in the Women's Novice class. Fat-free weight was significantly correlated with the Untrained and Elite judges' rankings in the Women's Novice division. Proportionality of muscle was significantly correlated with the Elite and Trained judges' rankings in the Men's Open lightweight class. Elite and Trained judges' rankings were significantly correlated with bodyfat and proportionality of muscle. All three groups of judges' were significantly correlated with the Overall rankings. The Trained judges' rankings were more correlated and more reliable with the Elite judges. The inter-rater reliability scores were higher for the Elite and Trained judges than for the Untrained judges. When fat-free weight was substituted for body weight in the calculation of proportionality of muscle, prediction of ranking was enhanced. The education session led to a significant disparity in judges' rankings between Trained and Untrained judges. Bodyfat appears to be a better selection variable when comparing physical measurements to judges' rankings in women. Proportionality of muscle is a better selection variable in predicting judges' rankings in men. Prediction models developed from this investigation need further testing.

Abstract:

This thesis establish the requirements for a searchable, on-line archive for music in the form of audio, video and sheet music, and looks at possible ways to design such a system. The thesis describes and compare existing systems to assess possibilities for reuse. Special attention is given to issues regarding the digital representation of sheet music. From interviews and evaluation of existing systems requirements for a digital music archive are derived. Furthermore, possible architectures are described. An access management model is developed that support many different use areas. These areas include a public database of music open for public contribution and use, a web-shop function where items in the archive can be charged for, publishing of music and science reports with audio samples, and smallscale collaboration on producing collective documents. All these applications plus other should be possible using the model. Institutions, organizations or private persons may use this thesis as a design for their digital music archive.

Dickinson, David Wayne. "Kindergarten screening scores of ESL students." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28210.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the scores of children who learned English as a second language (L2) in comparison with children who learned English as a first language (L1). Specifically, the kindergarten screening scores of L2 children were analysed considering the variables of: preschool experience, screening date, age at time of screening and the kindergarten screening scores of children for which English is their first language. To investigate these variables the Florida Kindergarten Screening Battery scores of 79 L1 and 79 L2 children were compared to determine some of the differences between both groups. The rationale for the present study is founded upon the fact that tests in general, and specifically the Florida Kindergarten Screening Battery are administered, interpreted and used for placement decisions, as if L2 children are identical to L1 children. In general, very little data was available as to how the performances of L1 children on these measures vary; even less information exists for children from Indo-Canadian or Oriental ethnic groups. Students included in the present study attended kindergarten in the Vancouver Public School system during the 1987/1988 school year. Excluded from the study were students who were repeating kindergarten, enrolled in a French immersion kindergarten program, had an unknown preschool history or proven hearing, visual, intellectual or emotional problems. Students were randomly selected and matched for English language ability (L1/L2), sex and financial status. Data used in the study had been previously collected during the 1987/1988 kindergarten screening by Vancouver school personnel. One way and two factor analyses of variance were used to test for equal means between groups and Pearson Product-Moment Correlations were used to determine the amount of relationship between individual factors within each group. Results indicated low positive correlations between preschool experience and subtest scores on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised and the Recognition-Discrimination Test for L2 students. Low positive correlations were also found between age at time of screening and scores on the Test of Visual-Motor Integration for L1 students. Results also indicated that: L1 students score significantly higher on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, L2 students score significantly higher on the Test of Visual-Motor Integration and that screening date (September versus January) does not have a statistically significant amount of impact upon test scores of L2 children on the Florida Kindergarten Screening Battery. It was concluded that because of the differences between groups, cross comparisons between ethnic groups should be made with caution until clarified by further research.

Music notation represents what a composer creates. This research is concerned with the problem of compression, without distortion, of complete scores of musical pieces. The musical score source has many interesting characteristics which set it apart from other information sources; for example, it is a collection of parallel 'parts'; the durations of symbols (notes) are variable; and the transitions between notes in different parts need not be simultaneous. These distinguishing features are discussed and incorporated into the procedure described in this work. The research consists of three parts. The first is the design of a representation system allowing musical scores to be stored on digital media. The second is the development of a simple music editor and the compilation of two pieces of music. The third is the design and implementation of a compression algorithm. Significantly higher compression ratios are achieved using the designed algorithm vis-a-vis those achieved using a standard general data compression algorithm.

Since August 2008, the newly commissioned Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) has been trained for SWO qualification through the INTRO/ASAT program. Through this program, USNA and NROTC officers check onto their first ship and subsequently attend a five-week introductory course given by the Afloat Training Group (ATG) located in one of the Fleet Concentration Areas, and OCS officers attend the course in Newport, RI. Following this training, they report to their ship for on-the-job training (OJT). Computer Based Training (CBT) discs are available to use as references. About 17 months following commissioning, the officer then reports to Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) for three weeks of Advanced Shiphandling and Tactics (ASAT) training. Upon arrival at ASAT, the officer is administered the SWO Fundamentals exam, designed to measure knowledge and retention of information covered during the OJT period. This thesis analyzes the SWO Fundamentals exam scores from 2007 to 2010 to determine which demographic and background variables affect a student's success and failure rates on the exam. Significant differences were found in gender, race, commissioning source, ship type, homeport, and class year.

Banerjee, Jayanti Veronique. "Interpreting and using proficiency test scores." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2003. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.418456.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the use of English language proficiency test scores in the university admissions process for non-native speakers of English. This use of English language proficiency test scores asswnes that a non-native speaker of English whose language proficiency is below a certain level will not be able to cope with the linguistic demands of studying in English and is, therefore, less likely to be successful in obtaining his/her degree. This assumption raises the question of the extent to which students' initial language proficiency detennines their eventual perfonnance on the degree course for which they register. The thesis surveys the advice provided to university admissions personnel on how to use language proficiency test scores in making admissions decisions and describes previous attempts to establish the link between language proficiency and academic success including the preliminary study for this thesis - often called predictive validity studies. All these studies have been disappointing hut the preliminary study suggests a potentially interesting variable, that of 'cost'. This is defined as the additional time and effort students need to expend in order to cope with their studies, over and above the time and effort a native-speaker might have to expend to achieve the same result.Drawing on developments in validity theory, the thesis also suggests that predictive validity studies are out of date. It argues that what is needed is a closer examination of how admissions decisions are made in order to understand better how test results are being interpreted and used as well as of the relationship between language proficiency and the incidence of 'cost' in a student's study experience. The main study adopts an ethnographic approach, first interviewing the relevant admissions personnel for two postgraduate degree courses at Lancaster University. It then follows up the study experience of 25 volunteer non-native speaker students registered on the selected degrees, showing in particular the relationship between the admissions personnel's initial judgement of their language proficiency and the 'cost' these students experienced during their degrees.

Abstract:
Recent research has begun focusing on the connections between reading and mathematics. Little research, however, has examined connections between mathematics and other reading related skills, such as spelling. Moreover, working memory may a play a significant role in both systems. Results indicated a significant predictive relationship between spelling and mathematics. Furthermore, this relationship was found to be partially mediated by measures of phonological working memory.

Abstract:
Federal and state laws have mandated preschool educational screenings. However, these laws only specify that a screening measure must be incorporated in the school's procedures. The laws do not state what this screening measure should be or how it should be used. For example, Public Law 94-142 established that a school should focus on early identification and intervention of children with special needs, but did not specify how to identify these students. As a result, reliable, valid screening measures are needed. A review of the current literature indicates that there are numerous screening measures available, but there is conflicting evidence regarding how these measures should be used and their predictive validity. The purpose of this current study is to evaluate the ability of a school corporation's local kindergarten screening measure, known as SEEK, to predict school achievement by the end of third grade, and special education placement, Title I support services, and gifted services by the end of fifth grade for both Amish and English speaking students. School achievement was measured by the student's performance on the third grade ISTEP. Archival educational data was collected for 333 children who participated in SEEK in 1997 and 1998, and then later took the third grade ISTEP. Results of the multiple regression analyses revealed that the overall composite score of the SEEK significantly predicted third grade ISTEP scores, special education placement, Title I support services, and gifted support services for both Amish and English students. However, the significance of the different components of SEEK to predict ISTEP scores varied depending on the area of ISTEP measured. In addition, the sensory and the behavior components did not significantly predict variation on ISTEP scores for either.language or math. Overall, these findings help validate the predictive validity of using the overall SEEK score and the usefulness of kindergarten screening. In addition, this study has implications in developing preventative approaches to benefit students who may be likely to experience learning difficulties at school. A discussion of the limitations as well as the usefulness of this study is presented along with directions for future kindergarten screening research.

Stewart, Robert L. (Robert Lee) 1960. "The Relationships Between the TeacherInsight Score and Student Performance As Measured by Student TAKS Academic Change Scores." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc700102/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between TeacherInsight™ (TI) scores and student performance as measured by student academic change scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. School district administrators, particularly district personnel administrators, are continually faced with the task of screening and hiring potential teacher applicants who are expected to influence student achievement outcomes directly. Efforts to make the screening, selection, and hiring process more efficient and effective have led to the use of certain teacher prescreening selection instruments that provide a research-based assessment of teachers’ affective attributes, which purportedly predicts teacher effectiveness. This study addressed this concern using a teacher screening and selection tool, the TI, design by the Gallup Organization. According to the Gallup Organization, the TI is a predictor of teacher affective attributes or talents. The state of Texas uses a student evaluation process called the TAKS to measure student academic gains in certain subject areas. This study examined the relationship between the TI and teacher effectiveness as measured by student academic TAKS change scores in mathematics in fourth and fifth grade. I used data obtained from a single school district in north central Texas. The specific targeted population consisted of 874 students enrolled in mathematics and 44 fourth- and fifth-grade teachers hired over a 3-year period (20082011). I applied a quantitative causal-comparative research design. Descriptive statistics for all variables were presented and bivariate relationships between continuous variables were examined. A two-level linear regression model was used to predict student performance on state-mandated assessments using teachers’ TI scores while controlling for relevant covariates. The statistical significance level throughout the study was set at α = .05. A major finding of this study revealed that teachers’ TI scores were not significant predictors of student achievement in the final model (p = .351). Moreover, the final model did not have significant predictive power when compared to the null model. The findings suggest that other factors not recorded in this dataset may influence student academic performance. Only student gender was a significant predictor of TAKS scores. However, the effect size indicated that student gender accounted for less than 1% of the variance in student achievement (R2 = .003). The findings of this study indicate that the TI alone should not be used as the sole instrument in predicting the quality and potential influence a teacher candidate will have on student performance on state-mandated assessments, and the selected school district should consider re-evaluating its use of the screening instrument for selecting teachers. Recommendations based on the results of the study are discussed and areas for future research are provided.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which the interpretation and use of test scores from a school district's mathematics test may be meaningful and valid for making instructional decisions, for measuring growth, and for making accountability decisions. The data used for the study came from six levels of a standardized mathematics test that grouped items into six specific categories to match the district's curriculum. The district's mathematics curriculum referred to the six item categories as "strands." The six strands were Number Sense, Data Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Structure/Logic. The test items were grouped in each test booklet by item categories (strands) and thus formed six strand subtests. Factor analysis was used to examine the structure of each of the six test levels. Findings from the factor analysis indicated that there was more than one dimension (underlying construct) at each test level. Factor loadings were found to group by strand and not by item difficulty. Analysis of variance and correlation procedures were used to gather evidence that was confirmatory in nature to help verify the findings from the factor analysis. An analysis of variance found a significant difference between some of the strands in pairwise comparisons, which supported the findings from the factor analysis indicating that more than one construct (dimension) was being measured. Strand intercorrelation coefficients that were corrected for attenuation showed strong relationships among strands, which supported test unidimensionality. It was concluded that there was evidence to support an overall dimension called mathematics, but that there was also evidence to support other dimensions which reflected the six mathematics strands.

Cloud-Hardaway, Sarah A. (Sarah Anne). "Relationship among Mosby's Assess Test Scores, Academic Performance, and Demographic Factors and Associate Degree Nursing Graduates' NCLEX Scores." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1988. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331954/.

Full text
Abstract:
This ex post facto study sought to examine: the efficacy of Mosby's Assess Test as a valid predictor of NCLEX (National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure Examination) scores; significant correlations among semester averages, semester tests failed, Nelson Denny Reading Test scores, and NCLEX scores; and differences in NCLEX outcomes in relation to ethnicity, age, and prior practical nursing licensure for 558 associate degree nursing graduates who wrote the NCLEX in 1983 and 1984. Significant positive relationships were found among Mosby scores, Nelson Denny scores, semester averages, and NCLEX scores. A significant negative relationship was found between number of semester tests failed and NCLEX scores. The mean NCLEX score of older graduates was higher than the mean NCLEX score of younger graduates. LPN graduates had a higher mean NCLEX score than non-LPN graduates. White graduates' mean NCLEX score was greater than the average score for black graduates. Combined predictor variables which yielded the best estimate of the criterion variable (NCLEX scores) for all graduates included mean semester average, Mosby scores, age above thirty-three, and Nelson Denny scores, respectively. The most important predictor of black graduates' NCLEX success was prior practical nursing licensure. Other significant predictors for black graduates' NCLEX success were mean semester average, Mosby scores, mean number of semester tests failed, age above thirty-three, and Nelson Denny scores, respectively. Mean semester average, mean score of the Mosby test, mean number of semester tests failed, and age above thirty-three were the most significant predictors of white graduates' NCLEX success. Older graduates had a higher mean Mosby score, a higher mean semester average, and failed fewer semester tests than younger graduates. The study results will be of interest to nurse educators and counselors who are concerned with curricular revision, student counseling, and remediation procedures as these relate to enhancement of graduates' potential for success on the NCLEX.

Abstract:
Are political finance regulations supportive or counterproductive to achieving democratic ideals? Do they foster political pluralism and fight corruption? Do they infringe upon political rights like freedom of speech? If they infringe upon rights while fighting corruption, what is the lesser evil? There are so many questions that fuel the debate on political finance regulation. Scholars rarely, if ever, arrive at a consensus in answering any of them. There are many studies that look for relationships between regulations and specific variables in individual countries, but seldom have scholars searched for relationships between regulations and broad measurements of democracy like index scores. This study discovers that positive relationships do exist between index scores and regulations even if they do not reach a meaningful degree of statistical significance in most cases.

Abstract:
Improving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has become a national priority and the call to modernize secondary science has been heard. A Physics First (PF) program with the curriculum sequence of physics, chemistry, and biology (PCB) driven by inquiry- and project-based learning offers a viable alternative to the traditional curricular sequence (BCP) and methods of teaching, but requires more empirical evidence. This study determined impact of a PF program (PF-PCB) on math achievement (SAT math scores) after the first two cohorts of students completed the PF-PCB program at Matteo Ricci High School (MRHS) and provided more quantitative data to inform the PF debate and advance secondary science education. Statistical analysis (ANCOVA) determined the influence of covariates and revealed that PF-PCB program had a significant (p < .05) impact on SAT math scores in the second cohort at MRHS. Statistically adjusted, the SAT math means for PF students were 21.4 points higher than their non-PF counterparts when controlling for prior math achievement (HSTP math), socioeconomic status (SES), and ethnicity/race.

Towers, David Norman. "Psychometric Properties of Frontal EEG Asymmetry Scores." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194972.

Full text
Abstract:
Frontal encephalographic (EEG) alpha asymmetry has been proposed as a measure of the relative difference in average cortical activity between the right and left anterior cortex, where this difference is taken as a physiological marker of trait and state level variables associated with affect. The validity of asymmetry as an indicator of both physiological and psychological variables is in part determined by the psychometric properties of asymmetry scores. The present studies focus on the psychometric assessment of frontal alpha asymmetry measured during rest. The first study involves a novel approach in the assessment of the internal consistency reliability of asymmetry scores. Previous studies estimated internal consistency reliability via Cronbach's alpha, using a relatively small set of asymmetry score that summarized activity over segments of the EEG data (e.g. one minute). Such an approach, however, will create estimates dependent on the number of segments utilized rather than the total amount of data recorded. Thus in the first study, individual FFT epochs were treated as items, thereby maximizing the total number of items used to estimate internal consistency reliability. Results of this study suggest internal consistency reliability is greater than previously reported, and as such, the duration of resting EEG data necessary to achieve a reasonable reliability criterion may be shorter than the current standard. In the second study, asymmetry scores were assessed as a specific case of difference scores, which are susceptible to a statistical artifact associated with differences in true-score variance for the component measures. Predicted asymmetry scores associated with the statistical artifact were obtained by estimating the true-score variance of right and left alpha power. The use of hierarchical linear regression showed some influence of the statistical artifact on the relationship between asymmetry scores and a measure of depressive severity, suggesting that some caution may be warranted in interpreting asymmetry results with relatively small effect sizes.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University
Objective: To better understand the characteristics of patients with persistently high pain scores (mean ≥ 7) as compared to those with persistently low to moderate pain scores (mean ≤ 6). Design: This study was a retrospective chart review that compares high pain patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and low-moderate pain patients with SCD that were admitted between 2010- 2011. Each chart was reviewed for information relating to demographics, location of pain, clinical course, school progress and family structure. Any numerical measures were compared using t- tests to assess whether differences in mean values were of significance. Results: High pain admissions showed no significant differences in BMI or hemoglobin levels at admission from low-moderate pain admissions. (p= 0.163 and p=0.424, respectively). Mean length of stay (p=0.048) and total length of stay within the two-year period (p=0.002) was significantly greater in high pain admissions. Patients in both groups had similar clinical courses, co-morbidities, long-term medications, hydroxyurea compliance, family structure and school progress. Discussion: Although some factors of high pain patients differed from low pain patients, these differences do not warrant any changes in the form of care for one particular group. Conclusion: Development of a method of intervention that can be administered early in order to decrease the number of pain crises would prove to be a beneficial use of resources. The use of a pain tool specific to SCD could help to standardize pain scores within this population.
