"Fede e ragione in Thomas Merton: il “cuore unificato” – la soluzione di un monaco? L’articolo prende l’avvio da uno scambio di lettere tra il monaco americano Thomas Merton ed il filosofo francese Jacques Maritain sul rapporto fede-ragione. Dopo aver considerato l’approccio mertoniano, avvicinandolo ad una posizione simile riscontrata in un carteggio anteriore tra Jacques Maritain ed il Beato Vladimir Ghika (un altro corrispondente affiattato del filosofo francese), l’articolo prosegue suggerendo che per Merton il problema non consistette tanto nel conciliare i dati della scienza con i dogmi della fede, quanto nel raggiungere quell’ “unificazione del cuore” auspicata dal filosofo Martin Buber come il vero cammino dell’uomo. Perché Heidegger dopo il richiamo all’esigenza metodologica di una fondazione della filosofia intesa come scienza pre-teoretica originaria, in aperta polemica tanto con la scuola di Marburgo, quanto dallo storicismo di Dilthey, si rivolge al proto-cristianesimo? Perché proprio a Paolo di Tarso? Quale legame sussiste tra l’esperienza fondamentale della fede e il compito designato di una filosofia intesa come scienza pre-teoretica originaria? La nostra ipotesi di lettura, consiste nel sostenere come proprio la radicalizzazione fenomenologica, riceva dall’analisi dell’esperienza religiosa Paolo, una possibilità di esplicitazione, che rispetto ai traguardi metodologici raggiunti nei precedenti corsi soddisfa nel merito le esigenze tematiche dell’esperienza originaria pre-teoretica.

Abstract:

L’articolo sviluppa cinque tesi innestate nella più lunga Lettera Enciclica scritta da San Giovanni Paolo II (1920-2005) esattamente a vent’anni dalla sua promulgazione (1998-2018), «Fides et ratio» inerente i rapporti intercorrenti tra fede e ragione. Alcune vennero intercettate durante il ventennio trascorso, altre sono inedite. Con la prima si ribadisce la completa autonomia della filosofia rispetto alla teologia cristiana, quale scienza della fede che pensa se stessa, motivo per il quale il sapere teologico non sposa nessun tipo di filosofia, ovvero la utilizza «qua talis». Con la seconda si ribadisce che la fede senza la «recta ratio» – oggi intorbidita e indebolita dalla società della tecnica – non potrebbe nulla senza il logos di cui si è attrezzata fin dall’inizio. Così, con la terza tesi si (di)mostra che, onde evitare che il pensiero riproducente se stesso prosegua all’infinito, essi trovi nella forma incarnata del logos – Gesù Cristo – l’unica «saturazione» del proprio ricercare. La quarta tesi rivela qualcosa che era sfuggito fino a qualche mese fa, ossia l’insistenza di «Fides et ratio» ad aprirsi ad altre culture, oltre a quella cristiana piuttosto secolarizzatasi, tipo quella indiana o asiatica, essendovi una «ratio». Con la quinta tesi, ugualmente inedita, si ravvisa che solo una «ragione etica» ovvero amicale, responsabile, fiduciale, appunto, può permettere alla fede di raggiungere quel livello rivelativo cui anela: nella persona di Gesù Cristo.

Abstract:

Se c’affrontiamo la realtà del secolo XXI., possiamo confermare, che l’archetipo dell’eroe non vive più nella quella forma in cui fu abituato nei secoli precedenti. Nello questo studio, l’autore desidera a presentarci l’evoluzione dell’immagine dell’eroismo attraverso tre vari campi della scienza umana. Analizzando il prototipo dell’eroe antico dal punto di vista della letteratura antica, riconosciamo un essere umano, il quale fu colpito dalla gloria terrena, la corona di alloro posta sulla testa dell’uomo e l’apprezzamento del popolo. Possiamo dire con massima certezza, che quest’immagine fu conservato attraverso dei secoli nella storia della maggior parte dei popoli. Nella storia del popolo ungherese (nel secolo XVII. e XX.) c’è un aspetto molto speciale dell’eroismo, in cui la battaglia dell’eroe contiene in più un additivo teologico-nazionale per cui l’eroe entra nel santuario del popolo, mostrandoci la sua battaglia soprannaturale per la fede in liberta nazionale. Alla fine, se ci pensiamo profondamente sul termine del martirio, ci rivela l’assioma, che il martirio autentico si trova nel cristianesimo, dove la battaglia dei fedeli è per lo scopo divino, per la gloria eterna. Questa battaglia, la gloria divina non è più egoista, ma guarda alla fede sublime e divina, e quest’aspetto fu coerente in ogni secolo della Chiesa, in Transilvania anche. Analizzando la vita dei Dieci Martiri di Transilvania, possiamo confermare che l’essenza della loro eroicità è identico di quella dei primi martiri della Chiesa primitiva, cioè l’idea del martirio cristiano è costantemente lo stesso.

Abstract:

Si presenta la versione polacca di una relazione tenuta nell’ambito dei seminari sul tema „Scienza giuridica e diritto canonico” al’Università di Torino 2. 5. 1990. Il testo originale viene pubblicato nel volume sullo stesso tema curato da Rinaldo Bertolino, Torino 1991. Ci presentiamo le osservazioni finali. 1. Il diritto canonico non può non giovarsi dello sviluppo della cultura giuridica (allo stesso modo che l'intero magistero della Chiesa non può non giovarsi del patrimonio culturale dell’umanità). Immutato è il quesito di fondo: in che misura queste vicende possono riuscire utili ad esprimere la „verità” ecclesiale. L’utilità dipende dallo sviluppo delle scienze giuridiche, come di quelle ecclesiali: il che significa che il diritto canonico ha, di fronte alla cultura giuridica, un atteggiamento aperto ed assorbente, pur se differenziato e non privo di critica. 2. Per sua vocazione universale la Chiesa ha un atteggiamento aperto di fronte alla cultura giuridica d’ogni ambiente in cui esse è presente ed agisce. Il riferimento alla cultura giuridica locale e i rapporti con le vicende delle culture regionali sono omogenei con i principi fondamentali della relazione Chiesa universale-Chiese locali. L’influsso del diritto romano e di quello germanico sul diritto canonico, da un lato; la romanizzazione del diritto dei barbari attraverso la Chiesa o, anche, l’influsso del diritto canonico p. es. sul diritto polacco dall’altro, dimostrano quanto il contatto della Chiesa con la cultura giuridica dell’ambiente possa ruiscire fecondo. 3. Negli ultimi secoli la presenza del diritto canonico nella cultura giuridica è, al massimo, passiva. Cerca d’assicurarsela una presenza mediante l’adattamento. Se anche sia vero che qualunque presenza debba accompagnarsi con la disponibilità ad imparare, occorre riconoscere che questa posizione unicamente difensiva non consente al diritto canonico di incidere e di ispirare la cultura giuridica. Inoltre, l’esito di questa presenza (passiva) è parziale, non solo perché le premesse filosofiche che fondano il pensiero giuridico sono (o sembrano essere) per la Chiesa inaccettabili, ma perché, in seguito all‘atteggiamento esclusivamente recettizio, si corre il rischio di trasferire nell’ambito metagiuridico tutto cio che non si ritrovi nell’ottica delle attuali dottrine giuridiche. 4. Non c’è dubbio che la Chiesa non sia l’ambiente topico di sviluppo delle scienze giuridiche e che la scienza giuridica goda di una sua piena autonomia. Ma la comunione ecclesiale, non di raro definita Ecclesia iuris, non lo è in seguito alla recezione del diritto ab extrinseco, ma in forza della propria immanente dimensione giuridica. (Senza di essa non avrebbe ragion d’essere un autonomo diritto canonico, ed i problemi organizzativi della Chiesa potrebbero essere risolti alla stregua del solo diritto ecclesiastico dello Stato). Si deve quindi riconoscere che la Chiesa, iscritta nella storia umana del diritto, ha qualche cosa da dire nella sfera del diritto, sia nella sua dimensione ideologica che in quella della sua realizzazione pratica. L’assenza di un ruolo ispiratore del diritto canonico sulla scienza giuridica contemporanea dovrebbe dar a pensare per la più che i fondamentali problemi giuridici vengono continuamente discussi dai cultori di diritto: viviamo tuttavia in un mondo di nazioni sempre più unite nel quale le interferenze di differenti teorie e sistemi giuridici tendono ad aumentare e le dottrine giuridiche si rivelano particolarmente suscettibili agli influssi di molteplici filosofie. 5. Su un contatto non unidirezionale ma bilaterale del diritto canonico con la cultura giuridica si potrà contare soltanto allora, quando la canonistica abbia fatto proprio il metodo del Concilio Vaticano II, durante il quale la Chiesa ha rinunciato a presentarsi ratione status, ed ha invece cercato di esporre la sua natura secondo la propria convinzione di fede. Anche nel diritto canonico bisogna finalmente decidersi ad una riflessione profondo sulla Chiesa alla luce della fede, sulle proprie radici e finalità, per poter realizzare il diritto ecclesiale nel modo più coerente e per potere, per cio stesso, dialogare con le altre culture giuridiche. Il dialogo non nascerà da una passiva traslitterazione, quasi a ricalco, del diritto civile nell’ambiente ecclesiale, ma attraverso una franca ed aperta meditazione sulle proprie premesse ontologiche, le proprie peculiarità, le proprie esigenze: anche quelle di una „nuova giustizia”. Soltanto allora la presenza del diritto canonico nella cultura giuridica potrà essere non solo riproduttiva, ma anche produttiva. 6. Anche sotto questo punto di vista appare urgente la necessità di una robusta elaborazione di una teoria generale del diritto canonico. Si tratta di una teoria del diritto della Chiesa secondo il suo proprio „credo Ecclesiam”, non già elaborata all’interno di rigide teorie aprioristiche. Troppo generiche e scarsamente feconde le prese di posizione a favore di una deteologizzazione del diritto ecclesiale e, al contrario, le obiezioni stesse contro una presunta sua teologizzazione. Non si tratta invero di una „teologizzazione”, ma di prendere in seria considerazione i principi teologici, grazie ai quali il dialogo con la cultura giuridica diventa possibile e razionale.

Biodiversitas 18: 1377-1384. Fusarium oxysporum is a soil borne pathogenic fungus that causes wilt disease in members of the family Solanaceae including the eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). One approach to resolving the problem of wilt disease in eggplant is to find endophytic microbes with antagonistic activity against F. oxysporum. The study reported here aimed to isolate such endophytic fungal antagonists from growing eggplants, to determine their antagonistic mechanisms, and to identify them. Samples of pathogenic fungi from diseased plants, assumed to be F. oxysporum, were obtained from the Laboratory of Plant Pests and Diseases of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta. These were used to evaluate the antagonistic potential of endophytic fungi obtained from healthy eggplants in Dawung Village, Matesih, Karanganyar, Central Java. Specimens of various plant parts were collected from the healthy eggplants. The surfaces of these samples were sterilized for four minutes to remove contaminants, and then crushed excisions were cultured on a potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. Antagonistic tests between endophytic and pathogenic fungi used the agar plug diffusion technique. Identification of fungi isolates was carried out on the basis of morphological characteristics. Six endophytic fungi isolated had antagonist activity against F. oxysporum. The antagonistic mechanism of FEB1, FEB2, FEB5 and FED1 was competition; FED2 was antibiosis, and FED3 was parasitism. Based on their morphological characteristics, FEB2, FEB5 and FED3 were identified as Helicomyces spp.; FEB1 was a Rhizopus sp.; FED1 was a Mucor sp.; and FED2 was a species of Penicillium.

Abstract:

L’insegnamento scolastico della religione nell’Unione Europea obbedisce a una vastíssima gamma di contesti diversi: diversità di sistemi educativi, di rapporti tra Stato e Chiese, di storie religiose nazionali. La legittimazione dei corsi dipende a volte dalla Costituzione, a volte da concordati, a volte dalle Chiese in collaborazione con lo Stato. Nell’ultimo ventennio è stato rilevante anche il “magistero laico” degli organismi europei, che insistono sul ruolo civico, etico dell’istruzione religiosa, ai fini di una educazione alla convivenza pacifica nella diversità crescente delle fedi religiose e delle convinzioni non religiose. Al di là delle differenze confessionali, coesistono diversi modelli didattici di istruzione religiosa: istruzione nella fede, a partire dalla religione, sulla religione, al di fuori della religione. La Pedagogia e la Didattica delle religioni sono oggetto di continua ricerca e sperimentazione nella facoltà teologiche e negli Istituti superiori di Scienze della religione e della formazione.

Abstract:

Abstract We explore the accretion states of tidal disruption events (TDEs) using a sample of seven X-ray bright sources. To this end, we estimate the relative contribution of the disc and corona to the observed X-ray emission through spectral modelling, and assess the X-ray brightness (through αox, L$_{2\ \rm keV}$, and fEdd,X) as a function of the Eddington ratio. We report strong positive correlations between αox and fEdd,bol; fEdd,X and fEdd,UV; and an anticorrelation for L$_{2\ \rm keV}$ and fEdd,UV. TDEs at high fEdd,bol have thermal dominated X-ray spectra and high (soft) αox, whereas those at low fEdd,bol show a significant power-law contribution and low (hard) αox. Similar to X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei, the transition between X-ray spectral states occurs around fEdd,bol ≈ 0.03, although the uncertainty is large due to the small sample size. Our results suggest that X-ray surveys are more likely to discover TDEs at low fEdd,bol, whereas optical surveys are more sensitive to TDEs at high Eddington ratios. The X-ray and optical selected TDEs have different UV and X-ray properties, which should be taken into account when deriving rates, luminosity, and black hole mass functions.

Fagraea berteroana is a tree used in traditional medicine in various islands of the South Pacific. Here, we studied its hair growth-inducing properties as suggested by one of its Marquesan ethno-uses in haircare. The ethyl acetate extract of the fruits of F. berteroana (FEAE) and four resulting fractions (FEAE-F0, FEAE-F1, FEAE-F2, and FEAE-F3) were tested on hair follicle dermal papilla cells to determine their cell proliferative activity. Furthermore, RT-qPCR analysis enabled gene modulation analysis, while immunostaining of the β-catenin protein was used to follow protein regulation. We found that the plant extracts induced a controlled, dose-dependent cell proliferation. FEAE-F0 simultaneously down-regulated Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP2) mRNA expression and upregulated Cyclin-D1 (CCND1) gene expression, which suggests an involvement in the regulation of the Wnt and Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGFβ) pathways that control the hair cycle. FEAE-F0 exhibited a 1.34-fold increase of nuclear β-catenin protein. This is indicative of an active hair growth state. Thus, we conclude that FEAE-F0 could be an innovative candidate in hair care, which opens interesting leads to promote the Marquesan cosmetopoeia.

Abstract Objective To determine the acute effect of fasted and fed exercise on energy intake, energy expenditure, subjective hunger and gastrointestinal hormone release. Methods CENTRAL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched to identify randomised, crossover studies in healthy individuals that compared the following interventions: (i) fasted exercise with a standardised post-exercise meal [FastEx + Meal], (ii) fasted exercise without a standardised post-exercise meal [FastEx + NoMeal], (iii) fed exercise with a standardised post-exercise meal [FedEx + Meal], (iv) fed exercise without a standardised post-exercise meal [FedEx + NoMeal]. Studies must have measured ad libitum meal energy intake, within-lab energy intake, 24-h energy intake, energy expenditure, subjective hunger, acyl-ghrelin, peptide YY, and/or glucagon-like peptide 1. Random-effect network meta-analyses were performed for outcomes containing ≥5 studies. Results 17 published articles (23 studies) were identified. Ad libitum meal energy intake was significantly lower during FedEx + Meal compared to FedEx + NoMeal (MD: −489 kJ; 95% CI, −898 to −80 kJ; P = 0.019). Within-lab energy intake was significantly lower during FastEx + NoMeal compared to FedEx + NoMeal (MD: −1326 kJ; 95% CI, −2102 to −550 kJ; P = 0.001). Similarly, 24-h energy intake following FastEx + NoMeal was significantly lower than FedEx + NoMeal (MD: −2095 kJ; 95% CI, −3910 kJ to −280 kJ; P = 0.024). Energy expenditure was however significantly lower during FastEx + NoMeal compared to FedEx+NoMeal (MD: −0.67 kJ/min; 95% CI, −1.10 to −0.23 kJ/min; P = 0.003). Subjective hunger was significantly higher during FastEx + Meal (MD: 13 mm; 95% CI, 5–21 mm; P = 0.001) and FastEx + NoMeal (MD: 23 mm; 95% CI, 16–30 mm; P < 0.001) compared to FedEx + NoMeal. Conclusion FastEx + NoMeal appears to be the most effective strategy to produce a short-term decrease in energy intake, but also results in increased hunger and lowered energy expenditure. Concerns regarding experimental design however lower the confidence in these findings, necessitating future research to rectify these issues when investigating exercise meal timing and energy balance. Abstract The recently launched Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite “R-series” (GOES-R) satellites carry the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) that measures from space the total lightning rate in convective storms at high spatial and temporal frequencies. This study assimilates, for the first time, real GLM total lightning data in an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) framework. The lightning flash extent density (FED) products at 10-km pixel resolution are assimilated. The capabilities to assimilate GLM FED data are first implemented into the GSI-based EnKF data assimilation (DA) system and tested with a mesoscale convective system (MCS). FED observation operators based on graupel mass or graupel volume are used. The operators are first tuned through sensitivity experiments to determine an optimal multiplying factor to the operator, before being used in FED DA experiments FEDM and FEDV that use the graupel-mass or graupel-volume-based operator, respectively. Their results are compared to a control experiment (CTRL) that does not assimilate any FED data. Overall, both DA experiments outperform CTRL in terms of the analyses and short-term forecasts of FED and composite/3D reflectivity. The assimilation of FED is primarily effective in regions of deep moist convection, which helps improve short-term forecasts of convective threats, including heavy precipitation and lightning. Direct adjustments to graupel mass via observation operator as well as adjustments to other model state variables through flow-dependent ensemble cross covariance within EnKF are shown to work together to generate model-consistent analyses and overall improved forecasts.

ABSTRACT We examine the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes in the simba cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. simba grows black holes via gravitational torque-limited accretion from cold gas and Bondi accretion from hot gas, while feedback from black holes is modelled in radiative and jet modes depending on the Eddington ratio (fEdd). simba shows generally good agreement with local studies of black hole properties, such as the black hole mass–stellar velocity dispersion (MBH–σ) relation, the black hole accretion rate versus star formation rate (BHAR–SFR), and the black hole mass function. MBH–σ evolves such that galaxies at a given MBH have higher σ at higher redshift, consistent with no evolution in MBH–M⋆. For $M_{\rm BH}\lesssim 10^8\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$, fEdd is anticorrelated with MBH since the BHAR is approximately independent of MBH, while at higher masses fEdd–MBH flattens and has a larger scatter. BHAR versus SFR is invariant with redshift, but fEdd drops steadily with time at a given MBH, such that all but the most massive black holes are accreting in a radiatively efficient mode at $z\gtrsim 2$. The black hole mass function amplitude decreases with redshift and is locally dominated by quiescent galaxies for MBH > 108 M⊙, but for $z\gtrsim 1$ star-forming galaxies dominate at all MBH. The z = 0 fEdd distribution is roughly lognormal with a peak at $f_{\rm Edd}\lesssim 0.01$ as observed, shifting to higher fEdd at higher redshifts. Finally, we study the dependence of black hole properties with H i content and find that the correlation between gas content and SFR is modulated by black hole properties, such that higher SFR galaxies at a given gas content have smaller black holes with higher fEdd.

Abstract:

The antioxidant, cholinergic, monoaminergic, and purinergic activities of flavonoid-rich extract from Dalbergiella welwitschii leaf (FEDW) were investigated on oxidative testicular injury (ex vivo) due to the local report on the use of this plant as anti-testicular injury. Flavonoid extract was obtained from FEDW using a standard procedure. Five male albino rats were used, testes harvested and incubated with FeSO4 for accessing the cholinergic, monoaminergic, and purinergic activities of the FEDW (ex vivo). Testicular tissues incubated with FeSO4 demonstrated a significant decrease in antioxidant biomarkers, arginase, ATPase, ENTPDase, 5ʹ-nucleotidase, and PDE-5 activities, as well as Zn and sialic acid levels with an upsurge in malondialdehyde (MDA), and NO levels, myeloperoxidase, cholinesterases, monoamine oxidase (MAO), and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activities. Treatment of testicular tissues incubated with FeSO4 via different concentrations of FEDW significantly increased the activities of antioxidant, arginase, ATPase, E-NTPDase, 5ʹ-nucleotidase, phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5), as well as Zn and sialic acid levels with a significant decrease in MDA, nitric oxide (NO), myeloperoxidase, cholinesterases, MAO, and ACE levels. Molecular docking revealed the molecular interactions of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) with ellagic acid, piperine, and caffeine with piperine and caffeine obeyed the druggability and pharmacokinetic. These findings point to FEDW as a possible potential for the treatment of oxidative testicular injury.

ABSTRACT Adherence of F18 fimbrial Escherichia coli to porcine intestinal epithelial cells is mediated by the adhesin (FedF) of F18 fimbriae. In a previous study, we demonstrated the specificity of the amino acid residues between 60 and 109 as the receptor binding domain of FedF. In this study, different expression, secretion, and anchoring systems for the receptor binding domain of the FedF adhesin in Lactococcus lactis were evaluated. Two partially overlapping receptor binding domains (42 and 62 amino acid residues) were expressed as fusions with L. lactis subsp. cremoris protein PrtP for evaluation of secretion efficiency. To evaluate the cell surface display of these FedF-PrtP fusions, they were further combined with different lengths of PrtP spacers fused with either the L. lactis AcmA anchor or the PrtP cell wall binding domain. An HtrA-defective L. lactis NZ9000 mutant was constructed to determine its effect on the level of secreted or anchored fusion proteins. Recombinant L. lactis clones secreting the receptor binding domain of F18 fimbriae as a fusion with the H domains of L. lactis protein PrtP were first constructed by using two different signal peptides. FedF-PrtP fusions, directed by the signal sequence of L. brevis SlpA, were throughout found to be secreted at significantly higher quantities than corresponding fusions with the signal peptide of L. lactis Usp45. In the surface display systems tested, the L. lactis AcmA anchor performed significantly better, particularly in the L. lactis NZ9000ΔhtrA strain, compared to the L. lactis PrtP anchor region. Of the cell surface display constructs with the AcmA anchor, only those with the longest PrtP spacer regions resulted in efficient binding of recombinant L. lactis cells to porcine intestinal epithelial cells. These results confirmed that it is possible to efficiently produce the receptor binding domain of the F18 adhesin in a functionally active form in L. lactis.

The rapidly increasing trend of retinal diseases needs serious attention, worldwide. Glaucoma is a critical ophthalmic disease that can cause permanent vision impairment. Typically, ophthalmologists diagnose glaucoma using manual assessments which is an error-prone, subjective, and time-consuming approach. Therefore, the development of automated methods is crucial to strengthen and assist the existing diagnostic methods. In fundus imaging, optic cup (OC) and optic disc (OD) segmentation are widely accepted by researchers for glaucoma screening assistance. Many research studies proposed artificial intelligence (AI) based decision support systems for glaucoma diagnosis. However, existing AI-based methods show serious limitations in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Variations in backgrounds, pixel intensity values, and object size make the segmentation challenging. Particularly, OC size is usually very small with unclear boundaries which makes its segmentation even more difficult. To effectively address these problems, a novel feature excitation-based dense segmentation network (FEDS-Net) is developed to provide accurate OD and OC segmentation. FEDS-Net employs feature excitation and information aggregation (IA) mechanisms for enhancing the OC and OD segmentation performance. FEDS-Net also uses rapid feature downsampling and efficient convolutional depth for diverse and efficient learning of the network, respectively. The proposed framework is comprehensively evaluated on three open databases: REFUGE, Drishti-GS, and Rim-One-r3. FEDS-Net achieved outperforming segmentation performance compared with state-of-the-art methods. A small number of required trainable parameters (2.73 million) also confirms the superior computational efficiency of our proposed method.
