Perriaux, Anne-Sophie. "La recherche en sciences sociales chez Renault : 1953-1991." Paris, EHESS, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995EHES0009.
The aim of this thesis in contemporary history is to evaluate the impact of social sciences research on a compagny. In 1953, Renault became one of the first compagnies in france to set up a social studies unit, within the personnel department. The period studied is 1953-1991, when the social studies unit was integrated into the research department. The thesis looks at research from all the social sciences disciplines, except marketing, and includes work carried out both by Renault employees and by external researchers, working either on their own or as consultants. The history of research at Renault is studied from three points of view. The first section analyses the institutions and actors involved. It distinguishes three periods : 1953-1971, dominated by a search for information ; 1971-1983, a search for solutions ; and 1983-1991, a search for a greater coherence. The second section, based on several case studies, looks at the different methodological approaches associated with different types of research : 'report research', 'action research' and 'integrated research'. The final section focuses on the objets and fields constructed by the research process. During the 1980s, the compagny's commercial activities, on the one hand, and the use to which research is put, on the other, tend to become new objects, while the compagny itself becomes the main field of reference. The conclusion of the thesis is that the traditional division between pure and applied research is irrevelant, the main value of research lying in the process rather than the outcome

In this dissertation in historical sociology, I analyze gender relations and the construction of women’s intellectual legitimacy in the French social sciences between 1890 and 1940. To that end, I study the social positions, the intellectual productions, and the reception of women in the main social science periodicals leaning towards sociology and anthropology. The pivotal point of my demonstration is women’s university enrolment and graduation. The first part of my dissertation is about women lacking a university diploma that nevertheless played a role in the social sciences before 1914, mainly through participating in the reformist circle of influence or by being involved in feminine and feminist groups. The “legitimate feminine figures”, i.e. women whose works did not fuel any kind of controversy, are in the most heteronomous parts of the field of study, in which issues about the reformist practice prevail over issues about knowledge. On the other hand, the “figures of transgression”, i.e. women lacking a diploma but pretending to participate in social empirical and theoretical knowledge, provoke negative reactions that, in turn, relegate their heterodox feminist analyzes to the political field. After 1914 and until 1940, the amount of women and of feminine works in periodicals and French social science groups decreased, and women with a university diploma replaced those lacking one. The gender-differentiated processes of evaluation, which contributed to reformulate the antinomy between intellectual competence and femininity, adapted itself to the fact that women had access to university diploma. On the one hand, the majority of newly graduated women heads and is directed towards new social professions (mainly social work) and teaching. Both professions promote competences traditionally associated with women, and construct the latter’s professional identities as disjoint from intellectual, and mainly theoretical, activities. On the other hand, the only graduated women aspiring to stay within the field of the social sciences, and who succeeded before 1940 in gaining a relative recognition for their competence, pursued empirical research, accomplished their work in accredited institutions, took on problems and perspectives sanctioned by the expert community, and did not play the role of feminist activists.

This thesis examines French study of Africa through a key period in its history, between 1945 to 1980, which witnesses the emergence of “études africaines”, a modern area study that developed after the Second World War replacing “africanisme”, a type of knowledge production linked to the colonial period. This process is inextricably linked to the African context, which played a major role in the transformation of the disciplines of the social sciences. The thesis examines specifically the experiences of French researchers and institutions in Africa, and how these explain much of the unique character of French African Studies. The decades surrounding the African independences are a complicated context, filled with paradoxes and contradictions, which are woven into the Franco-African relationship and have far-reaching consequences for knowledge on Africa. The study employs a series of vignettes to illustrate how this transformation took place, in particular the configuration of the “scenes of africanisme in Africa” and the resulting (inter)disciplinary and methodological innovations. It examines the French research institutions in Africa, particularly the Institut Français d’Afrique Noire (IFAN), and the Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique d’Outre Mer (ORSTOM). It analyses researcher training programs, such as the Formation à la Recherche en Afrique Noire (FRAN). It also examines a body of scholarly literature on a single subject, the Mouride Brotherhood of Senegal to demonstrate the impact of elements of context on knowledge production. It is a work at the crossroads of intellectual history and social history, concentrating on the role of key figures who were the intermediaries in the creation, transformation, and transmission of knowledge in Africa. This thesis also opens a reflection on how African Studies evolved after 1980, specifically changes in objects, disciplines, and fields in contemporary Africa

The concept of notability has such a wide polysemy in the study of french local authorities that another one was necesary to hold its whole meanings while going beyond them. Then, the concept of notabilization could help to build processes and relationship spaces rather than either states or individuals. The making of such a concept pushed to embrace classical divisions in the social sciences, around the "individual society" dialectics. So a paradoxical reasoning came to an evidence. Choosing the investigation ground, the french department of dordogne since the wwii days were over ws motivated by its archetypal properties. First, it was necessary to give an account of how the paradoxes of "nota bilization" could be shown from the dynamics of concise and structural stratagems and spoils in this area. Hence the study of local political entrepreneurship as a monopoly that can fail. Then, the work had to focus on network co-ordination which lead to a study of social sectors ways of constitution. So the notabilization could guarantee a sociogenesis of both political and social spaces in the area. Last but not least, studying the ways through which the notabilization can appear as a specific form of political mobilization (i. E. The territory and the individuality) lead to the constatation of an uncertain citizenship in the area, as well as to a global perplexity about the theorytical value of the concept of notability (or "notable")

Our thesis, developed according to Pierre bourdieu's field theory of power struggle analyzes how the question of corruption in France has evolved from eighties to the present day as manifested by media coverage, legal judgements, the reaction of the political, business and institutional establishments. Its three sections analyze how globalization (especially the lifting of border restrictions and the corporate restructuring and subsequent economic crisis of the 80s) has affected relations between state and business. We suggest that the increasing prominence of the corruption debate has forced large business hodings to call on experts in virtue (often recruited from state agencies) to protect them from national or international scandal

The thesis is divided into three parties which focuse on the French-Polish relationships between the social sciences in their material. Political and intelectual dimension. The first part describes the number of Polish researchers arriving to France and the number of French scientists going to Poland. As well as the institutions involved in the coopération, its organisation and the material obstacles of the relationships. The second part starts with a description of Polish-French scientifical relationships between 1944 and 1993, focusing on the contacts between the Polish researchers and 6th Section of EPHE. Moreover. The author analyses the political and ideological obstacles and the limits of coopération. The third part shows the points of understanding and misunderstanding between the Polish historians and l'école des Annales. Then, the author decribes the factors which intensified the relations and shows the numerous manifestations of the coopération

Research on mass communication as a social phenomenon in the post-war France is relatively unrecognized by actors of information and communication sciences (ICS). Nevertheless, it was a fertile period of conceptual and methodological renewal in social science research that has resulted in institutional creations and the emergence of new fields of investigation. The survey provides an overview of the phenomenon of mass communications research and analyses the contribution of different actors in the legitimization of this scientific object in the French academic field after the Liberation to the recognition of ICS as discipline in the French academic bodies in the early 1970s. Based on the concepts of “field”, “network” and “configuration”, the survey examines this universe of knowledge production through the analysis of a selection of 253 texts published in the period 1945-1972 to identify the cognitive and institutional evolution of this scientific object. Considered in a constructivist perspective, the study relates to the field of the ICS history research

Time representations vary from one Society to another, in space and in history. The present thesis aims to establish the history of this very idea in French social sciences between 1901 and 1945. How can its birth in the columns of l’Année sociologique be explained ? How was the idea then accepted and transformed by sociologists, psychologists, historians or ethnologists such as Marcel Mauss, Maurice Halbwachs, Lucien Lévy-Bruhl, Marcel Granet, Charles Blondel, Maurice Leenhardt, Jacques Soustelle, Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch - amongst others? The close attention given to the intellectual controversies in which the idea of "social time" was elaborated enables to go across some of the most intense debates in French university along the first decades of the XXth century, such as the competition between sociologies around 1900, the debate between sociologists and historians known as the "débat de 1903", the connections between durkheimian sociology and psychology, philosophy, history and ethnology during the interwar period. Observing the interrelation between sociological conceptions of time and representations of history in a long crisis of the goddess of "Progress", this work questions the process of "socialization" of the human arts and sciences : how the "social" became a way of understanding and explaining history as well as individuals

This dissertation traces the transformations of biomedical knowledge and practice on intersex in France. It studies the 20th century emergence and development of a new apparatus consisting in early medicalization of children with atypical sex. It specifically examines the example of the management the intersex variation CongenitalAdrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). This normalizing apparatus was based on a paradigm shiftinstituted by a new protocol developed at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s. Thisresearch analyzes the way this protocol was received and implemented in France. Examining the systematic medical management of “CAH girls” from this historical pointof view reveals a process of medical knowledge production that creates several ideas that come to be self-evident: their unequivocal female sex and the presumed necessity of early medical interventions. These “obvious” ideas are supported by new biomedical techniques as well as by psychological theories on gender and sexuality. Drawing on archives of scientific publications and interviews with key actors in this medical process, this dissertation shows that the multiplication of knowledge and medical intervention technologies paradoxically produces forms of ignorance and resistance within the current French medical field to abandon this paradigm that has now long been criticized. By studying two areas of medical action and knowledge production (prenatal diagnosis and long term follow-up studies), this dissertation focuses on the way these obvious ideas about sex persist despite the uncertain and complex nature of this knowledge that intersexuality destabilizes. This phenomenon can be understood in light of the contemporary context where medicine enjoys social legitimacy and exclusive control over the subject and deploys a variety of mechanisms to reject alternative forms of expertise

Alexis Carrel, Nobel prizewinner for medicine in 1912 and author of the bestseller "Man the unknown", published in both French and English in 1935, directed (as "regent") the French foundation for the study of human problems for two and a half years from 1942 to 1944 in occupied France. This organization, created under the law of 17 November 1941 which gave it certain rights including financial autonomy, had a double mission : to study "under all its aspects the most appropriate measures to safeguard, ameliorate and to develop the French people" and "to make a synthesis of efforts made either inside or outside and develop the science of man". Besides writing a monography of a large, unique and little known institution due to the circumstances surrounding its creation, I have attempted an analysis of the historical process with those contribution and approaches used by medico-biological sciences, physical anthropology and demography which have led to the formation of what in France has become one of the main poles of research in the social sciences

This PhD thesis is situated at the crossroad of the history of social control institutions, the history of military occupations, and the history of the repression of collaboration after the Second World War in Europe. It investigates and compares the post-war experiences of the Belgian gendarmerie, the French gendarmerie, and the Dutch Koninklijke Marechaussee, within the context of the multiple dynamics involved in the re-establishment of their legitimacy as legal police authorities. This complex reality is best defined as the whole of processes that allow to provide the armed forces with the necessary human, material and moral capabilities to perform their functions in the newly freed society. Our analysis of the continuities and ruptures marking the development of the gendarmerie forces between 1930 and 1950 is concerned with the evolution of their organisational structures, of their personnel, and of their professional identity. More in particular, we closely examine the ways in which they underwent mechanisms of ‘epuration’ (via extra-legal, administrative and judicial procedures), as a result of their activity within occupied territories. Overall, this examination reveals that although the armed police forces did evolve on the human and structural level and in terms of duties, in line with the evolution of European society, the professional values underpinning this development remained unchanged. These continued to correspond to the professional logic of serving the public cause and the political authorities, by responding to the need for processes of social regulation

This dissertation consists of a critical edition of the letters of Étienne de Nalèche, editor of the Journal des Débats, to the sugar magnate Pierre Lebaudy, during the First World War (1914-1919). With an annotated and indexed text, this corpus of more than 1000 letters provides the reader with much information about national politics, international relations and war. The historical introduction provides some guidance to the reader. It begins by giving a portrait of the two protagonists: Nalèche, who was a very prominent Parisian citizen, the editor of a well-known publication (Journal des Débats) and a liberal republican with ties to the business world and Lebaudy, an extremely rich sugar magnate and generous financial supporter of the Journal des Débats. Chapter 2 shows that theses letters were not simply personal correspondence but became a daily chronicle to preserve the memory of the war. Chapter 3 analyses Nalèche’s important social network made up of the Parisian elite and used by Nalèche exclusively to further the interests of his newspaper. Chapter 4 illustrates Nalèche’s journalistic vision, which incorporated many old fashioned notions, even though Nalèche managed to constitute a solid network of foreign correspondents and was not unaware of the new journalism. His working method was based on the very rich and crosschecked information provided by his network. The major interest and contribution of this correspondence lies in the richness of the story it tells and the daily analysis of Parisian life during the War of 1914, as seen by a quality observer with an alert writing style style situated at the crossroad of public opinion and the networks of power

Understanding the social representation of a scientific concept may be useful to the teaching and learning of it. The central question of this dissertation, that belongs to the didactic of the Sciences, is the social representation of the atom in French and Greek middle and high school students. Simultaneously, the didactic transposition of this concept in the general scientific education of these two countries is studied, from 1945 up to today. Our theoretical foundation with regard to social representations, is comprised of the theory of didactic situations, the anthropological theory of didactic, and the theory of the central core. We have collected, processed and combined data comprised of student interviews, drawings and answers to questionnaires to study the social representations. Furhermore, we have designed a technique of didactic analysis of Physics and Chemistry high school textbooks. The obtained results were compared with those of textual analysis using the Alceste software. The comparison of the representation systems revealed both similarities and differences, due to peculiarities in the didactic transposition, in the two educational systems. In both systems, it is the planetary model of the atom and the notion of the atomic nucleus that occupy the central core of the representation, while the notions of the electron and the proton are placed in the near periphery. On the other, the nuclear dimension of the atom is very important to the French, while to the Greeks it is elements related to the modelling of the atom that dominate. In conclusion, teaching may be hindered by the activation of a representation process giving rise to systems of representation

The Glorious Thirties period in France is characterized by a progressive change in public policies. But this period is as well marked by a double process held by protester discourses : on the one hand, a politicisation of the urban question, and on the other hand, an urbanization of left-wing political positions. This thesis deal with the instrumentality of urban space in political ideology. What is the position of urban space in political ideology ? Which real part does it strategically take ? The simultaneous emergence of ideas such as “life surroundings”, “everyday life”, “participation”, urban “auto-gestion”, and considerations on “Urban Revolution” and “Class-struggle’s urbanization” take part in the theoretical background of this double process. These ideas lead the city to become a stake for discourses and practices. Moreover, in Marxist and revolutionary ideology, the city is the key means for changing society. Among the leftists, some of the avant-gardes and the French “New Left”, the dialectic between criticized space and saving space allows us to analyze the city status of an instrumental space

Between 1880 and 1940, Greek student population in France had been transformated in its main demographic, social (gender, social and geographical origin) and educative (choice of discipline and institution) features. These transformations show the emergence of a new demand for higher studies, wich, among other things, finds its root in the strengthening of social and professional antagonism, as well as in the expansion of French language and French schools in Greece. In the same period, both the Greek and the French state had seek to promote this movement, by granting generously numerous facilities in favour of migrating students. But these same state institutions had been as much interested in regulating this kind of migration, by implementing forms of administrative control that led to the bureaucratisation of student mobility

Geoffroy de Montalembert offers an example of a normand notable whose aristocratic culture had been shifted to a political movement of the 20th century. First of all, this thesis sheds light upon the dynastic heritage as the foundation of his political identity. Next, the thesis questions the aspects of an exceptional parliamentary career of more than 50 years as the representative of the Seine-Maritime nearly exclusively on the bench of the Senate. His career started at the Fédération Républicaine and continued among the successive gaullist parties. Finally, the thesis studies the aspects of a nobility marked by a strong local establishment, who was a mayor for 68 years, who defended the agricultural world, who had a way of life and a particular representation and a strong commitment from his wife, born de Wendel, and a unique place in the political world because of his longevity

This doctoral thesis aims to analyze the sociology as public science and its development in ,comparative approach, in the United States, France and Romania. The main objective is bexplore the concept of "public sociology" and the critics of sociological knowledge in the context of contemporary knowledge society. Despite many cultural connotations of the "circulation of ideas" which change the interpretations of "public sociology" (Burawoy, 2004), the analysis of the thesis focus on several epistemological controversies about the relevance and reflexivity of sociological knowledge. The analysis starts from the theoretical line of American critics sociology and from the social theories of French sociology of the 1960s, Then, the study of the thesis is at the crossroads of theoretical models used by the sociology of ideas, sociology of scientific knowledge and the sociology of science. The main goal was to develop a critical an empirical analysis on the role of new configurations of knowledge and on the interpretation given to two questions: Sociology for whom?; Sociology for what? The thesis is divided in three sections: Understanding the concept of public sociology by a division of labor in America sociology; Analyze the epistemological alternatives of public sociology in France; Study the social and political utility of the scientific production of the Romanian sociology and starting from an ethnographic study, to develop a new division of sociological labor in Romania
