Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Thesis, Rennes 1, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015REN1G005/document.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis questions the reasons behind the current crisis of the concept of sovereignty. Most critics claim they denounce sovereignty in its classical sense, that is to say as expressed by Hobbes and Bodin. We will show that these critics fail to identify their object. They don’t aim at the notion of sovereignty as developed by Hobbes and Bodin, but rather a reconstruction of it. The idea defended here is that paradigmatic evolutions within the various disciplines dealing with sovereignty have deeply altered its meaning, as well as the meaning of the terms defining it. Concepts such as power, State, and Law have been changed according to the evolution of the States and the concerns of researchers in various fields. This work endeavors to clarify the plurality of meanings granted to these different concepts in order to show that the current critics of sovereignty are substituting their own definitions for the terms used by Bodin and Hobbes. Thus, it appears that by using sovereignty in its original sense, it cannot be regarded as limited

Abstract:
This thesis is a disciplinary study of French IR. It challenges a set of historiographic conventions that rationalize the marginal status in which French IR is stuck at present. By relegating these conventions as shared beliefs, this study intends to renew the way the current situation of French IR should be understood. The results of the investigation implicate the purely French label « Sociology of international relations » since it has been unable to represent a French school of thought and to establish a scientific conversation as successfully as the English school did.It sheds a critical light on the role of the precursor of the French Sociology of international relations Raymond Aron. Given the facts that he embodied an autonomous study of IR which has well spread in France for some time and the rejection he is subjected to nowadays, R. Aron symbolizes the very scientific issues that are at stake when considering the contemporary French Sociology of international relations. Thus, the main controversial points emphasize the latter’s intellectual premises regarding theory, the distinction between internal, foreign and international objects, and the multidisciplinary conception of the study of IR

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Wight pointed out that International Relations was “a new and transient subject” generated by the First World War. It began with a “pragmatic” objective, “almost to be the science of peace” based on the League of Nations. Since the Second World War and the outbreak of the Cold War, Wight observed, “We no longer believe that we are building peace, that we can abolish war, that international problems have solutions, that we can shape events, and that our subject contributes to these illusory ends.… All we aim at is understanding.” This means that International Relations falls short of being a social science but earns the stature of the liberal arts that pursue knowledge for its own sake. In practice the study of International Relations involves a tension between sociological and historical poles, with “no human activity” (including domestic politics) disregarded. International Relations “deals with the lower ultimate of human experience—passion and unreason, violence and deceit”; but its “vision is sometimes extended towards the higher ultimate of human experience; its sky is traversed by a comet like Gandhi.” Wight concluded that “International Relations, more than any other study, is the point at which History and the Social Sciences converge.” However, at critical and unique times in a country’s history “what Kierkegaard called the ‘hic et nunc,’ the existential moment—History is the proper guardian.”

Abstract:
In Chile, despite the great coverage achieved, there are still children and adolescents who leave school without being able to complete 12 years of compulsory education (Casen, 2015); moreover, among the countries that make up the OECD, Chile is in the first places of deschooling (TALIS, 2013). This marginalization from the school system is affecting a significant number of children and hindering areas of integration and social development, which accentuates processes of social exclusion and violation of rights in Chile (Casen, 2015; Mide-UC, 2016; Mineduc, 2017). This is reinforced by pedagogical practices that strengthen these probabilities of failure (Román, 2013). The phenomenon of school reintegration has little evidence in relation to the human and technical component in school reintegration processes, either locally (Mide-UC, 2016; UNESCO-UNICEF-Chilean Association of Municipalities, 2012), or internationally (CEPAL, 2010; Contreras et al, 2014; Sucre, 2016), which implies observing and analyzing pedagogical intervention practices in these contexts, in terms of how these dialogical-reflective relational dynamics between teachers and children and adolescents are developed, from the perspective of pedagogical interactions, an area of growing interest in educational sciences, which looks at more than the action itself, at how and what happens in the interaction. (Colomina et al, 2001) This research from a qualitative, transactional approach, oriented from the perspective of descriptive studies (Hernández,et al, 2010) and enriched with the symbolic interactionism of Blumer (1969), whose contributions indicate that the nature of the teaching-learning processes can only be unraveled through direct examination, seeks to understand pedagogical intervention practices from the perspective of pedagogical interactions which are developed between teachers and their students, within the framework of the specialized protection programs in school reintegration implemented in Chile by the National Service for Minors of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, in vulnerable sectors of the communes of Talca, Region of Maule and La Pintana, Metropolitan Region. The analysis through the theoretical and empirical contributions provided by the scientific evidence on pedagogical interactions, in terms of how they are configured, deployed and how these pedagogical intervention practices are perceived by the actors involved, added to the findings obtained, provides an opportunity to innovate by allowing the observation of school reintegration as a scenario of human relations and to deepen around this professional action as a critical element, constituting the improvement of teaching and effectiveness in school reintegration processes.

Abstract:
Ethical reflection can be of use to any actor in the academic and research world, involving different responsibilities: scientific integrity, general or disciplinary – questions relating to ethics committees, research ethics, or even broader responsibilities relating to the uses and possible impacts of the work undertaken. This last type of concern has been taken into account under the vague notion of responsible research and innovation (RRI), which includes ethics at all levels, and therefore scientific integrity, but also participation and open science. However, it is not easy to combine ethics, participation and openness. This perspective thus proposes a renewal of the reflection on the categories of responsibility and integrity in Research and Innovation (R&I), as well as on the conditions of possibility of ethical participation, in regard to the publics involved, the operating modes and the purposes targeted and included in its operationalization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is performing high-temperature electrolysis (HTE) research to generate hydrogen using solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs). The project goals are to address the technical and degradation issues associated with the SOECs. This paper provides a summary of ongoing INL and INL-sponsored activities aimed at addressing SOEC degradation. These activities include stack testing, post-test examination, degradation modeling, and issues that need to be addressed in the future. Major degradation issues relating to solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are relatively better understood than those for SOECs. Some of the degradation mechanisms in SOFCs include contact problems between adjacent cell components, microstructural deterioration (coarsening) of the porous electrodes, and blocking of the reaction sites within the electrodes. Contact problems include delamination of an electrode from the electrolyte, growth of a poorly (electronically) conducting oxide layer between the metallic interconnect plates and the electrodes, and lack of contact between the interconnect and the electrode. INL’s test results on HTE using solid oxide cells do not provide clear evidence as to whether different events lead to similar or drastically different electrochemical degradation mechanisms. Post-test examination of the SOECs showed that the hydrogen electrode and interconnect get partially oxidized and become nonconductive. This is most likely caused by the hydrogen stream composition and flow rate during cooldown. The oxygen electrode side of the stacks seemed to be responsible for the observed degradation because of large areas of electrode delamination. Based on the oxygen electrode appearance, the degradation of these stacks was largely controlled by the oxygen electrode delamination rate. Virkar et al. [19–22] have developed a SOEC model based on concepts in local thermodynamic equilibrium in systems otherwise in global thermodynamic nonequilibrium. This model is under continued development. It shows that electronic conduction through the electrolyte, however small, must be taken into account for determining local oxygen chemical potential within the electrolyte. The chemical potential within the electrolyte may lie out of bounds in relation to values at the electrodes in the electrolyzer mode. Under certain conditions, high pressures can develop in the electrolyte just under the oxygen electrode (anode)/electrolyte interface, leading to electrode delamination. This theory is being further refined and tested by introducing some electronic conduction in the electrolyte.

Abstract:
The increasing advance of the new technologies applied in the retail market, make it common to sell products without the personal contact between seller and buyer, being the registration and payment of the products made in electronic equipment of self-checkout. The large-scale use of these devices forces the consumer to participate in the service process, which was previously done through interaction with the company's employees. The user of the self-checkout system thus performs all the steps of the purchase, from weighing the products, registering them and making the payment. This is seen as a partial employee, whose participation or performance in providing services can be used by the company to improve the quality of its operations (KELLEY, et al 1993). However this participation does not always satisfy the user, and may cause negative experiences related to usability failures. This article presents the results of the evaluation by the users of the self-checkout system. The data were collected in Portugal through a questionnaire to 400 users. The study analyzes the degree of satisfaction regarding the quality and usability of the system, the degree of motivation for its adoption, as well as the profile of the users. Analysis of the sample data reveals that users have basic or higher education and use new technologies very often. They also have a high domain of the system and an easy learning of its use. The reason for using self-checkout instead of the traditional checkout is mainly due to "queues at checkout with operator" and "at the small volume of products". In general, the sample reveals a high degree of satisfaction with the service and with quality, however, in comparative terms, self-checkout is not considered better than operator checkout. The evaluation of the interaction with the self-checkout was classified according to twenty-six attributes of the system. The analysis identifies five groups with similar characteristics, of which two have low scores. "Cancellation of registered articles", "search for articles without a bar code", "manual registration", "bagging area", "error messages", "weight sensor" and “invoice request "are seven critical attributes of the system. The results indicate that the usability analysis oriented to the self-checkout service can be determinant for the user-system interaction. The implications of empirical findings are discussed together with guidelines for future research. Keywords: Interaction Design, Self service, Self-checkout, User evaluation, UsabilityReferencias ABRAHÃO, J., et al (2013). Abstract:
An assembly line is a flow-oriented production system where the productive units performing the operations, referred to as stations, are aligned in a serial manner. The work pieces visit stations successively as they are moved along the line usually by some kind of transportation system, e.g., a conveyor belt. An important decision problem, called Assembly Line Balancing Problem (ALBP), arises and has to be solved when (re-) configuring an assembly line. It consists of distributing the total workload for manufacturing any unit of the product to be assembled among the work stations along the line. The assignment of tasks to stations is constrained by task sequence restrictions which can be expressed in a precedence graph. However, most manufacturers usually do not have precedence graphs or if they do, the information on their precedence graphs is inadequate. As a consequence, the elaborate solution procedures for different versions of ALBP developed by more than 50 years of intensive research are often not applicable in practice. Unfortunately, the known approaches for precedence graph generation are not suitable for the conditions in the automotive industry. Therefore, we describe a detailed application of a new graph generation approach first introduced by Klindworth et al. [1] that is based on learning from past feasible production sequences. This technique forms a sufficient precedence graph that guarantees feasible line balances. Experiments indicate that the proposed procedure is able to approximate the real precedence graph sufficiently well to detect nearly optimal solutions even for a real-world automotive assembly line segment with up to 317 tasks. In particular, it seems to be promising to use interviews with experts in a selective manner by analyzing maximum and minimum graphs to identify still assumed relations that are crucial for the graph’s structure. Thus, the new approach seems to be a major step to close the gap between theoretical line balancing research and practice of assembly line planning.

Abstract:
Abstract For any given Exploration oil and gas portfolio and associated opportunities, successful business decisions can only be made on the basis of technically robust estimates of the subsurface risk versus the resource potential and estimate of the associated upside(s). Ideally, these estimates should incorporate the entire spectrum of opportunities for the complete portfolio and they should be made in a consistent and comparable way. However, as Explorers, we are often faced with data that is incomplete, limited, of variable quality, and/or inconsistent. As a result, subsurface evaluation may be seen more as educated guessing rather than a robust science of evaluation grounded in facts and defensible logic. In their January 2020 paper "Randomness, serendipity, and luck in petroleum exploration" authors Milkov and Navidi (Ref 1.) go quite a bit further and demonstrate that luck is a significant factor in the exploration success equation. They also showed a general lack in long-term consistency in exploration results of individual companies. Indeed, after we looked at PETRONAS’ own historical POSg versus actual technical success rates and observed only a fair to poor relation between actual technical success rate and the pre-drill POSg estimate. A similar—albeit less worrisome—observation was made for volume ranges and fluid phase predictions. Clearly, there is, and always has been, a phenomenal challenge for the Petroleum Geoscientists to provide the sought after estimates as accurately as possible, and we were no exception. In a bid to improve on this PETRONAS set out on a more disciplined approach to characterizing subsurface uncertainties on its conventional exploration efforts. Over time, more accurate characterizations of such exploration risk and resource potential have followed from a series of procedural guidelines, enhanced capability training program and careful governance of exploration workflows. With improved capabilities and workflow consistency, our evaluation teams have delivered substantially better subsurface evaluations. This in turn has led to more confident decision-making on e.g., individual drilling decisions and new play entries. While our newly implemented workflows are not groundbreaking in isolation, in combination they have delivered notable success and an improved ability to shape the future growth for PETRONAS. In this article, we will highlight the main contributing changes and demonstrate that the overall improvements are indeed impactful. We are not directly challenging the article of Milkov et. al., but are convinced that professionalism and scientific discipline is the deciding factor in the Exploration success equation.

Abstract:
The challenge of demographic change combined with decreasing numbers of care personal is widely known. To ensure the service of individual care for seniors, researchers work on developing digital devices to support the caregivers in their day-to-day tasks. Especially the Covid-19 pandemic emphasized this need for flexible services. In this context, service robots are not only able to overcome this challenge, but to also support in other use cases such as therapy of children with autism spectrum disorder, or teaching. Regardless of their area of application, their usage and benefits highly depend on the user acceptance. Consequently, many studies on their appearance, behavior as well as their usefulness and acceptance have been undertaken. However, the studies on acceptance measurements are difficult to compare due to different study designs and therefore are hard to build upon. This is the case since traditional acceptance models such as the Technology Acceptance Model by Davis (1989), are not considered as sufficient for the interaction-focused technology of robots. Therefore, it is difficult and time-consuming for researchers to determine the most appropriate model in order to measure the acceptance of the developed service robots. To be able to measure new robot developments in this rapidly evolving research field, an overview on existing models as well as their application options is necessary. To support researchers and developers the aim of this research is to provide an overview on existing models for the acceptance measurements of service robots. To reach the objective, the following main research question is proposed: Which models currently exist to measure the acceptance of different service robots?Following the taxonomy on literature reviews by Cooper (1988), the focus of this literature review is on existing research methods and practices. The goal is to integrate existing literature within a matrix to identify central issues, by having a neutral perspective. The research follows the guidelines of Brocke et al. (2009) including a concept-centric approach of Webster and Watson (2002) for the literature analysis and synthesis. The foundation builds a search based on the search string robot* AND accept* AND (measur* OR method* OR model* OR evaluation*) which was used for Scopus, Science Direct, IEEE Xplore as well as Google Scholar. From the 274 identified research paper duplicates and non-English ones are excluded, which is resulting in 226 unique research paper. Those are further clustered and the 19 identified acceptance models for service robots are brought into relation to the robotic classification of Onnasch et al. (2020). The concept-matrix reveals that most models are highly specific to a certain field of application or target group. In addition, a large number of acceptance models for service robots were found, but most of them are not commonly used. This concept-centric literature review gives a structured overview that can be used by researchers and developers to quickly identify the most suitable model for their research. However, some characteristics are not covered or just covered from different models. Consequently, further research on how to overcome these gaps is required.

Abstract:
Over the past twenty-five years, genetic methods have generated a wealth of information on the regulation and the structure-function relationship of bacterial genes. These methods are based on the introduction of random mutations in a gene to alter its function. Subsequently, genetic techniques cure applied to localize the mutation, while the nature of the impairedfunction could be determined using biochemical methods. Classic examples of this approach is now considered to be the elucidation of the structure and function of genes, constituting the Escherichia coli lactose (lac) and tryptophan (trp) operons, and the detailed establishment of the structure and function of the repressor (lacl) of the lac operon. Recombinant DNA techniques and the development of appropriate expression systems have provided the means both to study structure and functionof eukaryotic (glyco-) proteins and to create defined mutations with a predestinedposition. The rationale for the construction of mutant genes should preferentiallyrely on detailed knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of the gene product.Elegant examples are the application of in vitro mutagenesis techniques to substitute amino-acid residues near the catalytic centre of subtilisin, a serine proteasefrom Bacillus species and to substituteanamino acid in the reactive site (i.e. Pi residue; methionine) of α-antitrypsin, a serine protease inhibitor. Such substitutions have resulted into mutant proteins which are less susceptible to oxidation and, in some cases, into mutant proteins with a higher specific activity than the wild-type protein. If no data are available on the ternary structure of a protein, other strategies have to be developed to construct intelligent mutants to study the relation between the structure and the function of a eukaryotic protein. At least for a number of gene families, the gene structure is thought to be created by "exon shuffling", an evolutionary recombinational process to insert an exon or a set of exons which specify an additional structural and/or functional domain into a pre-existing gene. Both the structure of the tissue-type plasminogen activator protein(t-PA) and the t-PA gene suggest that this gene has evolved as a result of exon shuffling. As put forward by Gilbert (Science 228 (1985) 823), the "acid test"to prove the validity of the exon shuffling theory is either to delete, insert or to substitute exon(s) (i.e. in the corresponding cDNA) and toassay the properties of the mutant proteins to demonstrate that an exon or a set of adjacent exons encode (s) an autonomousfunction. Indeed, by the construction of specific deletions in full-length t-PA cDNA and expression of mutant proteins intissue-culture cells, we have shown by this approach that exon 2 of thet-PA gene encodes the function required forsecretion, exon 4 encodes the "finger" domain involved in fibrin binding(presumably on undegraded fibrin) and the set of exons 8 and 9 specifies kringle 2, containing a lysine-binding sit(LBS) which interacts with carboxy-terminal lysines, generated in fibrin after plasmic digestion. Exons 10 through 14 encode the carboxy-ter-minal light chain of t-PA and harbor the catalytic centre of the molecule and represents the predominant "target site" for the fast-acting endothelial plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1).As a follow-up of this genetic approach to construct deletion mutants of t-PA, we also created substitution mutants of t-PA. Different mutants were constructed to substitute cDNA encoding thelight chain of t-PA by cDNA encoding the B-chain of urokinase (u-PA), in order to demonstrate that autonomous structural and functional domains of eitherone of the separate molecules are able toexert their intrinsic properties in a different context (C.J.M. de Vries et al., this volume). The possibilities and the limitations of this approach to study the structure and the function of t-PA and of other components of the fibrinolytic process will be outlined.
