Abstract:
Solve et Coagula - dissolving Guimarães Rosa and rebuilting him through science and spiritualism analyses the importance of spiritualism in Guimarães Rosa s life and work, mainly in the process of writing Primeiras Estórias and Ave, Palavra. It s studied friends and family testimonials, interviews, letters and his notebooks, to understand how HIS interest IN SPIRITUALISM - SPECIALLY in Kabala, Tarot and Astrology - appears in his books, from the creative process throughout the narrative, characters and language, in balance with a scientific thought. And it s also analysed his feeling of religious studied by Vilém Flusser and how it s related to the poetic language of Guimarães Rosa.

Drawmer, Lois Jane. "The impact of science and spiritualism on the works of Evelyn De Morgan 1870-1919." Thesis, Bucks New University, 2001. http://bucks.collections.crest.ac.uk/9963/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the extent to which spiritualism and science inform the paintings of Evelyn De Morgan (1855-1919). I propose that her works in the period 1870-1919 incorporate Darwinist themes of evolutionary development integrated with a spiritualist paradigm of the progression of the soul after death. Chapter one examines the context and influences on De Morgan's mature works, including her family and friends. It considers the impact of her role as a professional woman artist in Pre-Raphaelite circies, and also her engagement with spiritualist practices as a medium. Chapter two argues that De Morgan's works are underpinned by a Darwinian model of evolution, expressed in her works as the progression of the soul, through the vehicle of the female physical body to the metaphysical realm. Chapter three considers how De Morgan reconfigures traditional Christian iconography and narratives through Platonist philosophy in order to create an alternative, feminist vision of divinity. Chapter four continues the exploration of science and spiritualism in relation to female empowerment through De Morgan's representation of witches and occult figures. It proposes that De Morgan's involvement in female suffrage and experience as a medium generate specific spiritualist meanings in her portrayal of occult figures. Chapter five asserts that De Morgan's recurrent concern with water and related imagery correlates with her spiritualist beliefs. It seeks to demonstrate that paintings with water imagery, including sea-scapes, sheils and mermaids, conflate contemporary scientific and spiritualist concerns, which integrate the idea of evolutionary and spiritual development. The conclusion draws together the principal findings of the thesis, and argues that the empirical evidence and close analysis of De Morgan's works in the period 1870-1919 show that they are primarily motivated by De Morgan's engagement with spiritualism.

Hallim, Robyn. "Marie Corelli: Science, Society and the Best Seller." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/521.

Full text
Abstract:
Issues which faced Britain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries include the effects of new scientific theories on traditional religious belief, the impact of technological innovation, the implications of mass literacy and the changing role of women. This thesis records how such issues are reflected in contemporary literature, focusing on the emergence of popular culture and the best seller, a term which conflates author and novel. The first English best seller was Marie Corelli and, by way of introduction, Part I offers a summary of her life and her novels and a critical overview of her work. Part II of the thesis examines how the theory of evolution undermined traditional religious belief and prompted the search for a new creed able to defy materialism and reconcile science and religion. Contemporary literature mirrors the consequent interest in spiritualism during the 1890s and the period immediately following the Great War, and critical readings of Corellis A Romance of Two Worlds and The Life Everlasting demonstrate that these novels - which form the nucleus of her personal theology, the Electric Creed - are based on selections from the New Testament, occultism and, in particular, science and spiritualism. Part III of the thesis looks at the emergence of the woman question, the corresponding backlash by conservatives and the ways in which these conflicting views are explored in the popular literature of the time. A critical examination of the novella, My Wonderful Wife, reveals how Corelli uses social Darwinism in an ambivalent critique of the New Woman. Several of Corellis essays are discussed, showing that her views about the role of women were complex. A critical analysis of The Secret Power engages with Corellis peculiar kind of feminism, which would deny women the vote but envisages female scientists inventing and operating airships in order to secure the future of the human race. Interest in Marie Corelli has re-emerged recently, particularly in occult and feminist circles. Corellis immense popularity also makes her an important figure in cultural studies. This thesis adds to the body of knowledge about Corelli in that it consciously endeavours to avoid spiritualist or feminist ideological frameworks, instead using contemporary science as a context for examining her work.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this work is to establish whether Georges Burdeau has the quality of a State Theory's author. Writing a State Theory is to go beyond the mere enunciation of explanatory terms, however relevant they may be. What counts is their coherent arrangement, and this can only be achieved through the identification of a branching out concept. The "Idea of Law" plays this role in Georges Burdeau's Political Science Treaty. Georges Burdeau is a part of the so-called "open constitutional lawyers", he enriches his definition of the State, and makes it begin very upstream of the classical doctrine practice. Sociological, polemological and spiritualist, Burdeau's views on the Law and on the State are similar to a new institutional realism which certainly contributes to bring a greater depth to the Science of Law. Borrowing much from neo-classical economists studying competitive market structures, the author masterfully transposes the mechanisms in his analyses of the political struggle. He thus sets up a new geopolitics of forces and does not hesitate to establish that the State can be defined as an organized dialectic

Abstract:
This thesis provides the first comprehensive study of an eminent but oft-overlooked Victorian polymath, with the overarching aims of assessing his contributions to nineteenth-century intellectual life and of exploring the mutual relations between science and religion in his work. One of the towering figures of the Victorian scientific establishment, William Carpenter (1813-1885), F.R.S, was a famous physiologist and public figure. He is most remembered for his concept of 'unconscious cerebration' which contributed to the emergence of the disciplines of neurology and modern psychology, but Carpenter was also noted amongst his peers for his evolutionary approach to the study of the unicellular marine invertebrates known as the foraminifera. As a lifelong practicing Unitarian, Carpenter's outspoken support for evolutionary theory made him an exemplary advocate of the compatibility between rational thought and Christian belief amidst the Victorian debate about science and religion. As the Registrar of the University of London during its formative years, Carpenter also had a nationwide impact on the fortunes of scientific education and secondary education as a whole. Finally, as a populariser of science and public moralist, "Dr. Carpenter" was also well known to the Victorian public as one of the most outspoken critics of spiritualism, alleged paranormal phenomena, and superstition more generally. Nevertheless, no systematic study of Carpenter's work had until now been carried out, and the commonly held view that he lacked originality as a scientist had not been fully questioned. The current study therefore aims to review Carpenter's achievements and trace his intellectual legacy. As an intellectual biography, it argues that focusing on the now lesser-known members of the British intelligentsia can shine new light on the context of the professionalization of science in Victorian Britain. In its focus on science and religion, this thesis argues that a deeper understanding of Carpenter's Unitarianism must feature at the heart of any endeavour to analyse his work. Previous references to Carpenter either bypassed Unitarianism and its nineteenth-century transformations, or reduced Unitarian thought to certain core tenets that fell short of uncovering Carpenter's philosophical pursuits. Carpenter's Unitarianism is still often equated with the rationalism and mortalism that defined late eighteenth-century Unitarianism, and this failure to recognise how much Carpenter's own faith had departed from earlier strands of Unitarian belief has led to some misinterpretations of his motives. The current thesis therefore offers fresh interpretations of Carpenter's work, based on new archival material and recent historical studies of the shifting priorities shaping the more romantic and emotional spirituality of nineteenth-century Unitarianism. Taking an integrative approach to Carpenter's various projects makes it possible to show how seminal many of his ideas were, and how his Unitarianism, both in its social and spiritual dimensions, influenced his professional, political and intellectual choices. The biographical angle taken in this thesis also makes it possible to uncover a degree of epistemological coherence underpinning Carpenter's thought, and to argue that Carpenter's efforts to transcend conflicting viewpoints partook of his wider social and metaphysical aims.

Abstract:

Alberts, Margaretha Elizabeth. "Spirituality and business leadership." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1803.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
The theme for this study was inspired by an intuitive and cognitive awareness of, and concern for, the challenges and complexities faced by business leaders in the twentyfirst century. The shift from the industrial to the post-industrial era has brought about a new, complex network of activities globally. The increasing uncertainties and divides that are facing the business world - as well as society in general - have led to the hypothesis that the old paradigms and the existing repertoire of leadership approaches to business are no longer effective. The shift to a networked society also demands a shift in the consciousness levels, virtues and values of business leaders. This view is built on the premise that, under certain conditions and in certain situations, business is an important driver of transformation in general. Business has the ability and the power to influence the whole, i.e. societies, communities, environments, etcetera. The assumption is that business per se could be an important catalyst of change in society, and that business leaders are certainly accountable for the co-creation of a sustainable and meaningful environment. Business’ role is now often understood as serving the whole, i.e. accepting some responsibility for all or most processes in which the business may be involved. Business leaders’ values and worldviews are perceived as sometimes directly influencing their decision-making processes, and the argument, therefore, is that a new consciousness or a values-based, holistic approach to business and society – i.e. spirituality – could be an enabler in creating meaning that can incorporate these dimensions. The awareness of the challenges for business leadership was enhanced by a statement made by Manual Castells (1998:368) that, in the Information Age, there is “an anxious search for meaning and spirituality”. This study particularly addresses the personal, transpersonal and organisational transformations that are influencing our ability to make sense and to create meaning in the context of post-industrial business. The theme of sense-making in organisations has been influenced by the theories of Karel Weick in particular. The hypothesis is that mental intelligence alone is no longer sufficient for the interpretation of the postindustrial landscape, and it argues the importance of business leaders’ developing spiritual intelligence and a new spiritual awareness as a probable enhancer of transformation and sustainability. The spirituality that is needed provides a holistic, values-based approach and the consequent capacity to deal with complexity and change that was lacking in previous management frameworks. The theories on spirituality and spiritual intelligence are based on the principles of quantum physics, or the “new science” as described by physicists such as Heisenberg, Bohm, Capra, Kaku and others. A comparison between the Newtonian approach and the quantum approach underpins the argument. The views of specifically Zohar and Marshall were used to substantiate this argument. The principles of spirituality and spiritual intelligence are juxtaposed against the leadership theories of specifically three contemporary authors, i.e. Robert Terry, Jim Collins as well as Richard Barrett. These three authors respectively and collectively argue in favour of the evolvement of a new holistic consciousness and of authenticity in servant leadership. The assumption is that these leadership qualities could enhance interdependency and may lead to sustainability. Spirituality and business leadership is therefore explored as a probable enabler of a process of transformation in people, in organisations and in society, as well as a possible catalyst for creating meaning, fulfilment and sustainability. The line of thought in this study is that people, as an integral part of the universe, are being challenged to change not only themselves, but by virtue of a raised intelligence and holistic consciousness called spirituality, also change the world (organisation) in which they behave, through their leadership conduct. This requires leaders to aspire to a better understanding and interpretation of a new world, and to reflect on the organisation and themselves from more dimensions than purely the cognitive. This study argues that this could include a consciousness that is referred to as spirituality and spiritual intelligence.

Smith, Judith Ann. "Genealogies of desire : "Uranianism", mysticism and science in Britain, 1889-1940." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2643.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines early twentieth-century British "Uranian" same-sex sexualities as a distinct entity from other labels for homosexuality. British sexologists, feminists, and other radical socialist/anarchist reformers invoked scientized versions of mysticism and Asian religions to conceptualize different, though intersecting, meanings for the Uranian. Historians of sexuality, however, tend to conflate the term "Uranian" with the other various and conflicting medico-scientific concepts circulating at the time, such as "homosexual," "sexual invert," and "intermediate sex." Overstating the slippage between terms, however, obscures the significance of Uranianism in the history of same-sex eroticism, and reinforces a dichotomy between spirituality and modernity. The Uranian discourses examined here epitomize a "progressive" historical moment that elaborated the scientific origins for the spirit, soul, and a divine will in the constitution of modern sexual/spiritual subjects. In many ways, Uranianism challenged the late nineteenth-century medical-sexological discourses that demarcated the homosexual as a pathological "type" by creating a more fluid understanding of sexuality through the interplay of Edwardian critiques of scientific materialism with New Age ideas about the mind, psyche, and spirituality. That is not to suggest that Uranianism offered an "alternative" (homo)sexuality that was disentangled from pathological discourses; on the contrary, the Uranian discourses implicitly consolidated the "homosexual type." Tracing the genealogy of Uranian sexuality through three case studies illuminates a modern moment when reformers attempted to create fluid sexualities. We find that Uranianism complicates our understandings about the supposedly dominant role of medical-scientific discourses in the construction of early twentieth-century British (homo)sexuality.

Hayen, Todd. "Ancient Egyptian sacred science and the loss of soul in modern materialism." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3644354.

Full text
Abstract:

The ancient Egyptians believed that the material world as well as the imaginal inner world was infused with spirit and spirits. They believed in a wholly integrated reality, which included the physical forms of nature as well as the unseen images, gods, goddesses, powers, symbols, and meanings that go beyond a rational intelligent comprehension but rather present a harmonized inner and outer perception of reality.

This study utilizes an alchemical hermeneutic research methodology, which advocates research with soul in mind using meditative transference dialogues to inform the scholarly research and interpretation of resources used to investigate the spiritual substance of these important concepts such as the psyche to matter problem, and the possible loss of soul in a modern materialist paradigm. This inquiry explores how ancient Egyptian sacred science relates to the variety of ways in which humankind has defined soul and spirit, how this ancient Egyptian way of being could be integrated in modern modalities of science, and how this integration would impact today's understanding of reality.

The study proposes how a modern shift into this ancient cosmology might benefit today's sciences, medicine, and most significantly the practice of psychotherapy, which, from a conventional perspective, is presently considered from a largely materialistic perspective, with little or no regard for the unseen and the immeasurable presence of soul. Conclusions are drawn regarding the personal impact of the study on the researcher, efforts toward a methodology of psychotherapy practice integrating the concepts of ancient Egyptian sacred science, and the limitations of adopting a modern cosmology rooted in an ancient way of being.

Rudbøg, Tim. "H.P. Blavatsky's Theosophy in context : the construction of meaning in modern Western esotericism." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/9926.

Full text
Abstract:
H.P. Blavatsky’s (1831-1891) Theosophy has been defined as central to the history of modern Western spirituality and esotericism, yet to this date no major study has mapped and analysed the major themes of Blavatsky’s writings, how Blavatsky used the concept ‘Theosophy’ or to what extent she was engaged with the intellectual contexts of her time. Thus the purpose of this thesis is to fill this gap. The proposed theoretical framework is based on the centrality of language in the production of intellectual products, such as texts—but contrary to the dominant focus on strategies, rhetoric and power this thesis will focus on the construction of meaning coupled with a set of methodological tools based on contextual analysis, intellectual history and intertextuality. In addition to an overview of Blavatsky research this thesis will map and analyse Blavatsky’s use of the concept ‘Theosophy’ as well as Blavatsky’s primary discourses, identified as: (1) discourse for ancient knowledge, (2) discourse against Christian dogmatism, (3) discourse against the modern natural sciences and materialism, (4) discourse against modern spiritualism, (5) discourse for system and (7) discourse for universal brotherhood. In mapping and analysing Blavatsky’s discourses, it was found that her construction of meaning was significantly interconnected with broader intellectual contexts, such as ‘modern historical consciousness’, ‘critical enlightenment ideas’, studies in religion, studies in mythology, the modern sciences, spiritualism, systemic philosophy, reform movements and practical ethics. It, for example, becomes clear that Blavatsky’s search for an ancient ‘Wisdom Religion’ was actually a part of a common intellectual occupation during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and that her critique of the Christian dogmas was equally a common intellectual trend. To read Blavatsky’s discourses as the idiosyncratic strategies of an esotericist, isolated from their larger contexts or only engaged with them in order to legitimise minority views would therefore largely fail to account for the result of this thesis: that in historical actuality, they were a part of the larger cultural web of meaning.

In my thesis I argue that the return of the religious in contemporary culture has been in two forms the rise of so-called fundamentalisms in the established faiths-Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, even Buddhist-and the rise of a New Age style spirituality that draws from aspects of those faiths even as it produces something distinctively different. I argue that this shift both produces post-modern media culture, and is itself always-already mediated through the realm of the fictional. Secular and profane are always entangled within one another, a constant and pervasive media presence that modulates the way that contemporary subjects experience themselves and their relationship to the spiritual. I use popular culture as an entry point, an entry point that can presume neither belief nor unbelief in its audiences, showing that it is “unreal” texts such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Matrix and so on that we find religious symbols and ideas refracted through a postmodernist sensibility, with little regard for the demands of “real world” epistemology. Abstract:
This is an auto-ethnographic study into the lived experience of a science teacher as she attempts to transform her science teaching practice and the practice of other science teachers over a period of 15 years. In exploring what it means to be a holistic educator she is faced with disorienting dilemmas which cause her to question underpinning assumptions, values and curriculum frameworks which inform traditional science teaching practice and culture. In trying to reconcile science and soul in the pedagogical space of a physics classroom her journey requires a deep investigation of self in various cultures – science culture, educational culture, modernist and postmodernist cultures.Part 1 of the study introduces the key referents of Integral Theory, Holistic Education and Spirituality which she used to inform her changing education practice. Part 2 reflects on her journey from a traditional constructivist classroom, into ones which explore meaning, questioning, significance, discourse, ethics and enabling frameworks.Part 3 concludes with an attempt to integrate science and soul into a vision for science educators. This includes a model which suggests that science has various development stages or cultures and that science teaching can be strategically aligned to facilitate the growth of human consciousness.

Caulkins, Charli N. "Spirituality and Anxiety: Forgiveness as a Mediator." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2012. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/155.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: There is a growing interest in psychological and health research in the relationship between spirituality and physical and mental health variables. Forgiveness has also been considered in such research and hypothesized as a potential mediating variable. However, much of the research in this area has not examined spirituality in the dimensions ritualistic, theistic, and existentialistic, nor has it tested for the potential mediation of forgiveness. The purpose of this study was to expand upon the dimensions of spirituality, with forgiveness as a mediator, and to test how they affect state and trait anxiety. Methods: Participants in this cross-sectional study were 479 students at East Tennessee State University (Caucasian=78.29%, ♀=69.10%, Mage=22.45). Participants completed a variety of self-report measures including the RiTE measure of spirituality, state and trait anxiety measure, Heartland Forgiveness Scale, and religious background and behaviors. Results and Discussion: Existentialistic spirituality was found to be related to both state and trait anxiety with forgiveness providing both indirect only and full mediation effects. Forgiveness of self and forgiveness of situations served as the only mediators between existentialistic spirituality and state and trait anxiety. Ritualistic and theistic spirituality were not significantly related to state and trait anxiety. It appears that spirituality may operate through forgiveness of self and forgiveness of situations to affect state and trait anxiety. That is, existentialistic spirituality is associated with forgiveness, which in turn is associated with lower anxiety. As such, it may be useful to integrate the concept of these dimensions of spirituality when assessing anxiety in psychological health patients.

Abstract:
Social workers are subjected to experiencing job related stress due to high case loads, the severity of client cases, and vicarious trauma. In order to cope with these job stresses, it would be conducive for social workers to find alternatives to coping with job related stress. Practicing spirituality can be seen in many forms relating to religion, cultural practices, prayers, meditation, and to be one with nature to say the least. This research will explore the correlation between spirituality and job related stress among social workers. Quantitative data has been gathered amongst 133 social workers who have participated in answering the spirituality inventory and job stress questionnaire. Results from this data finds that spirituality brings forth positive attributes such as reducing stress and burnout. Furthermore, there is a negative correlation between spirituality and job stress. The greater spirituality is linked to lower levels of job stress. Therefore, it is vital to utilize spirituality as it may help with self care and lead to greater longevity in the social work field.

Ayahuasca is a mix of psychoactive substances from the Amazon, popularized in recent decades by transnational religious networks, and academic researchers interested in its clinical applications. The current dissertation is a study of ayahuasca rituals in Catalonia and surrounding areas, focusing on its use in the treatment of addictions. The main objectives of the research are: a) to use the perspective of medical anthropology to understand informal ayahuasca social networks as being embedded in alternative health care systems; b) to explain the academic interest in ayahuasca because of the relations and tensions between science and religion/spirituality; c) to gain a cognitive and cultural understanding of how the healing ritual works in the case of ayahuasca being used to treat addictions. The research studies several centers in Catalonia, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands, using an ethnographic approach that includes interviews with the leaders of the groups, participant observation for the analysis of the ritual design in each center, and biographic techniques for the study of cases of addicts who have been treated and cured. Ritual healing will be investigated using a medical anthropology model and an interdisciplinary approach that considers both cultural and cognitive elements

Abstract:
Background and Aim: The spiritual lives of people with ID has been under researched (Swinton, 2002; Turner et al., 2004) and as yet, no research has been carried out comparing faith-based and non-faith-based services for people with ID. This research explores and compares a faith-based care organisation with a non-faith based care organisation with the aim of investigating the significance of spiritual/religious based principles as modes of care to the quality of life of individuals, acknowledging that non-faith based care providers may provide ‘a spiritual/religious environment’, explicitly or non-explicitly. Method: A mixed-method design using both qualitative and quantitative methods was utilised. Six months were spent volunteering within each community in order to engage in participant observation of both care organisations. Quantitative methods included the Quality of Life Questionnaire; Self-esteem Scale and the Social Network Guide in addition to semi-structured interview schedules. Results: People with ID were found to enjoy spiritual/religious based activities, with spirituality being an important aspect of their quality of life. Staff from the non-faith based service provided religious spiritual care mainly through church attendance, whilst staff from the faith-based service provided both religious and non-religious spiritual care. Staff from both care services reported that practical implementation of spiritual/ religious care tended to be overridden by legalistic administrative tasks, communication issues and staff availability. Conclusion: There is a need for ID services to not only acknowledge but also facilitate spirituality in the lives of people with ID.

Abstract:
Since spirituality separated from religion it appeared as an unclear concept regarding its identity as a new secular domain. Responding to this condition and to the need of identifying spirituality, the aim of this research is to develop the concept of spirituality according to the current European population. The study applies mixed methodology and finds current spirituality functioning as a three-dimensional model composed of Transcendence, Immanence and Purpose. This concept is predicted by thirteen independent variables. The findings suggest that current pirituality is a person’s individual existential dimension being subject to change through the influence of various psychological, religious and social factors. The discoveries of the study find its practical implication within formational social fields such as education, counselling and psychotherapy.

Abstract:
This research explores the question: how does an art therapist’s understanding of God as Creator form his/her identity and inform his/her clinical practice? A review was done in the art therapy, spirituality and psychology integration, and creation theology literature to look at existing research that answers this question. A lack of information in the art therapy literature prompted the development of this study to respond to this inquiry. This involved gathering data from LMU MFT graduates who expressed in a survey that they were willing to participate in this study. Four graduates were able to attend an art workshop to explore the research question. Qualitative data was gathered from observing the participants’ process, artwork, and discussion in the workshop as well as their written reflections sent in three weeks later. This data was analyzed by looking at emergent themes that were then compared with the literature. Two significant conclusions were drawn from the data. The first was that an awareness and understanding of God as Creator can provide a unique perspective of self and others that has a considerable impact on an art therapist’s view of his/her role and approach to clinical work. The second conclusion was that there is a powerful connection between spirituality and creativity, that when allowed to enter into the therapeutic space, can enhance transformation and healing. These conclusions have important implications for the training and practice of art therapists. Further research is recommended to expand the data as well as focus on specific areas that this research was unable to cover.

Blesch, Pamela S. "Spirituality in nursing education| Preparing students to address spiritual needs." Thesis, Capella University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3568614.

Full text
Abstract:

Preparing nursing students to address spiritual needs of clients is a challenge for nursing education programs. There is minimal evidence in the literature exploring the spiritual needs of clients from the perspectives of nursing students and faculty. While licensed nurses can confirm the importance of meeting the physiological and psychosocial needs of the client, nursing professional practice standards demand nurses include acknowledging the client’s spirituality. As required by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), American Association of Credentialing Nursing (AACN), and the National Council State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), spiritual care is a requirement, not an option. By determining how nursing students are prepared to address the spiritual needs of the client in a large Midwestern baccalaureate nursing program, nursing faculty can identify effective methods of including spirituality in the nursing education curriculum. This research study used qualitative inquiry and focused on understanding experiences from nursing students and nurse educators. A grounded theory approach was utilized to assess faculty and student perceptions of preparation of senior baccalaureate nursing (BSN) students to address the spiritual needs of the clients. Two themes emerged from the faculty interviews: students need a clear definition of spirituality, and students are not prepared to address the spiritual needs of clients with a spiritual assessment tool. Three themes emerged from the student interviews: students cannot clearly define spirituality versus culture versus religion, they are not equipped to do a spiritual assessment, and there is a lack of role models by both nursing faculty and staff in the clinical setting demonstrating how to address the spiritual needs of clients. There are two sub-categories that support how to define spirituality and how to better equip students to address the spiritual needs of clients. Using a grounded theory approach, the outcomes of this study support a new theory to facilitate nurse inclusion of spirituality in the nursing curriculum.

This study provides support for integration in the nursing curriculum and inclusion of teaching strategies focusing on spirituality in the nursing curriculum. Findings from this study help minimize gaps in the literature by contributing new knowledge about spirituality in the nursing curriculum that previously had not been empirically identified.

Abstract:
By definition subcultures harbor their own sets of norms and unique characteristics. From fashion to slang vocabularies, each subculture stands apart as a world of its own. In the subculture of psychedelic trance, an electronic music based subculture, such marking characteristics are taken beyond superficial expressions. Through repeated exposure to spiritual concepts, language, and rituals, thecommunity fosters spiritual practices and beliefs in individual members. Using in-depth interviews and extended participant observation, Iidentify patterns and commonalities, as well as divergences, in the spiritual practice and beliefs of subculture members. Ultimately psy-trance members draw on organized religious traditions while also distinguishing their activities and group from traditional religion. The role of music in collective ritual and the concept of lived religious experience provide insight into the beliefs and practices of the psy-trance subculture.

Abstract:
This thesis considers three convergent issues pertinent to investigations of identity and agency in contemporary society: the proliferation of digital, network technologies, the rise of interest in secular — ‘new edge’ — spiritualities, and our growing awareness of impending ecological crises. I argue that these three issues necessitate a critical reconsideration of human agency, one that embodies a more sustainable and responsible ‘being-in-the-world’. With this goal in mind, I apply the insights of ecofeminism, feminist approaches to technology and science, and the philosophy of technology, to provide a critical analysis of the human-technology relation in the broader contexts of gender, ecology and spirituality. In particular, I highlight the strengths of ecofeminism, and then employ several alternative theories in order to attend to limitations I identify within ecofeminism; in particular, its uncompromising stance towards modern technology as wholly patriarchal and damaging to both nature and women. Against this position, I argue that technology is fully embedded in and central to our being-in-the-world, and thus must be accounted for in any consideration of contemporary agency. I then attend to both technophobic and technophilic approaches to technology and technoscience in feminism more generally, suggesting how these oppositional tensions are embodied in the figures of the ‘cyborg’ and the ‘goddess’. In search of more complex, hybridised ways to understand the human-technology relation, I then turn to three key theorists – Don Ihde, Donna Haraway and Bruno Latour. Synergising their approaches with the neopagan worldview, I propose a metaphorical and material identity which properly attends to and incorporates the treble issues of ecology, technology and spirituality into its worldview: the technopagan. At once nature-worshipper and digital dweller, the technopagan is a dynamic, multi-faceted and adaptable agent that can effectively challenge traditional humanist binaries between nature and technology, science and religion, and human and nonhuman.

Morse, Andrew James. "The Life and Thought of Mormon Apostle Parley Parker Pratt." PDXScholar, 2013. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1084.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1855 Parley P. Pratt, a Mormon missionary and member of the Quorum of the Twelve, published Key to the Science of Theology. It was the culmination of over twenty years of intellectual engagement with the young religious movement of Mormonism. The book was also the first attempt by any Mormon at writing a comprehensive summary of the religion's theological ideas. Pratt covered topics ranging from the origins of theology in ancient Judaism, the apostasy of early Christianity, the restoration of correct theology with nineteenth century Mormonism, dreams, polygamy, and communication with beings on other planets. For nearly fifty years after its publication, Key to the Science of Theology was one of the most widely circulated books within the Mormon community, serving as a model of doctrinal orthodoxy. This thesis aims to understand Pratt's book and his theological ideas, broadly, in their historical context. Primary sources related to Pratt and his contemporaries, including other works by Pratt, Mormon missionary tracts, newspaper clippings, and theological writings by competing religions, help place Pratt's ideas within the larger framework of American religious and intellectual thought of the early to mid-nineteenth century. Pratt drew from non-Mormon sources to help explain the Church's teachings, at times appropriating ideas and rhetoric from elsewhere to bolster his claims about the superiority and universality of the Mormon message. The first chapter of this thesis gives a biographical sketch of Pratt. It introduces key concepts in Mormon belief and how Pratt conceived them. Furthermore, the chapter offers a philosophical take on Pratt's life as one motivated by an apocalyptic worldview. Chapter two draws upon Pratt's apocalyptic conscience to examine his eschatological ideas including a strain of early Mormon thought regarding theocracy. Pratt envisioned a world-wide theocracy coming at the millennium. Mormons, Jews, and Native Americans as ancient Israelites would all share in a world-wide order built around twin centers of power in the historical Jerusalem and a New Jerusalem to be established in North America. Chapter three looks at Pratt's cosmology and argues that his views of the universe, including other planets and beings, were influenced and framed by contemporary Spiritualism as a means of combatting the threat of Mormons leaving the Church for Spiritualist practices. The epilogue looks at changes made to the text of Key to the Science of Theology in 1915 by Church leader Charles Penrose. It places the text's republication within an ongoing battle between older Church leaders like Penrose and younger leaders such as John Widtsoe over what would constitute Mormon orthodoxy during the modernizing phase of the Church in the early twentieth century. Issues like evolution and polygamy took the forefront over eschatological and cosmological concerns.

Gacnik, Bonita L. "The Design of an Online Oblate Program: Benedictine Spirituality for the Laity." NSUWorks, 2003. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/534.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of people who are attracted to a life of prayer and to a more complete dedication to God is escalating. The monastic world finds an increasing number of lay people who experience support and nourishment for their spiritual life by establishing a close relationship with a monastic community. Growing participation in oblate programs (i.e., Benedictine spirituality program for the laity, Benedictine oblation) is also common throughout the country. Advances in communications technologies and the proliferation of distance learning opportunities make it increasingly important for institutions that offer enrichment programs to provide distance learning environments that meet the educational needs of the adult learner. Online technologies are becoming the delivery systems of choice for those who are otherwise engaged during traditional contact hours. The challenge for religious institutes is to respond to this interest and to offer a more inclusive way of sharing their spirituality and religious way of life through monastic program offerings specifically designed for the laity. Historically, oblate programs have been remarkably responsive to the spiritual needs of the times and have shown elasticity and creativity in response to the needs of a particular circumstance interpreted through the Benedictine tradition. In response to the growing interest in Benedictine monastic spirituality, this researcher, in collaboration with Sacred Heart Monastery, developed an online oblate program to provide an alternative for laity who desire or require the anytime, anywhere online alternative. The program was created using an iterative methodology that includes five main phases: analysis, design, development, evaluation, and delivery. These phases were supported with: criteria establishment, criteria validation, a product development plan, and a product validation plan. A learner-centered, non-credit bearing, online immersion program in Benedictine spirituality (i.e., Benedictine oblation) for the adult was developed, tested, and validated. The results of the study are generalizable to like populations (i .e., adults who possess computer literacy skills) that are looking for immersion programs in spirituality, humanities, or liberal arts. Recommendations for further research are provided.

Abstract:
African American women traditionally have lower rates of suicide than women of other races; however, over the past 20 years the rates of suicide have increased in the African American community. The purpose of this paper was to examine the effects of religiosity and spirituality as coping strategies for African American women. Findings show that there is a correlation between higher levels of religiosity and spirituality and lower levels of suicidal ideation, hopelessness and depression. It was hypothesized that higher levels of religiosity would be more positively correlated with lower levels of suicidal ideation, hopelessness and depression than spirituality. Conversely, it was found that spirituality accounts for more of the variance associated with lower levels of suicidal ideation, hopelessness and depression.

Sayers, Bonnie Blue Love. "The ecology of love| A transdisciplinary inquiry into the heart of matter." Thesis, California Institute of Integral Studies, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3743743.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation presents an original contribution by defining love as an eco-systemic process with the potential to heal Earth’s ecological crisis. Something is considered systemic when it is spread throughout and affects a system as a whole. Considering the view that Earth is an interconnected system, I began to question the role of systemic processes in response to Earth’s greater problems, like climate change. A review of the literature revealed that love has not yet been explored as an eco-systemic process in relation to Earth’s complex crisis. I chose to address this gap in the literature by engaging a dialogue on the role of love in ecological healing.

The research is approached through an ecological, or systems, perspective. I developed three methodological tools to assist this inquiry process. The first is what I term the ecological conscience. This could be viewed as the lens of my inquiry and is defined in detail in my methods section. The second is transdisicplinary inquiry, a method of research specifically designed for systems studies. Individual disciplines are beginning to explore the topic of love in more detail—from the biological reactions of love in the body, to cognitive reactions of interpersonal relationships, to the cultural evolution of love. Each discipline presents a much-needed thread to our understanding of love, but it is important to weave these threads together as a whole. Transdisiciplinary research allowed this process to occur. Finally, I chose storywork methodology as a way to frame my findings on the ecology of love. The story is written as a creative dialogue between myself and the ecology of love and reflects the complexity of my findings in a more personal and emotional tone.

If something is systemic, its role is crucial to the health of the larger system. That love is appearing in so many disciplines reveals its systemic nature in life. Only by viewing the interconnections can we see how love plays a role in the ecological healing of Earth. This research presents a scientific view of what the poets, saints, and sages have been saying all along. Love matters, and it matters so significantly that its presence or absence influences the evolution of Earth as a whole.

Ndukwe, Sonia U. "BELIEFS ABOUT RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY AMONG SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELORS." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2014. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/18.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the beliefs about religion and spirituality among substance abuse counselors. The data was gathered using an explorative qualitative design by interviewing substance abuse counselors in the field and asking questions related to the religion, spirituality, and the influence on their practice. This research highlighted the impact of substance abuse as a spiritual disease that affects the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the client’s life. The key findings were related to the responses from the participants because it highlighted the importance of meeting the client where they are (motivational congruence), tolerance, acceptance, and the impact of agency policies. The second key finding is the substance counselor’s beliefs have no bearing in their practice because they operate under the philosophy of motivational congruence which is meeting the client where they are. Even though they have personal beliefs they are able to implement the professional use of self-focusing more on the client’s needs as opposed to theirs. The implication for future research is the contribution to extant literature by emphasizing the importance of religious or spiritual practices in the recovery process.

Abstract:
This study explores the experience that Art Therapy alums have had in regards to spirituality and healing within a multicultural framework and the implications of art. Narrative based questionnaires with creative art responses were used to gain information about their experiences of spirituality, healing, culture, and art. The data obtained was analyzed using phenomenologically-informed methodology: organized into tables and analyzed vertically and horizontally (Creswell, 1998), the creative art responses scored using FEATS (Gantt, 2009) analysis. From the analysis, clusters of meaning, similarities, and unique experiences emerged and were categorized into 21 emergent categories: Centering, Growth, Connection, Meditation, Prayer, Art as spiritual and healing, Spirituality as inner wisdom, Nature and spirituality, Spirituality as God within, Spirituality as different from religion, Change in religious status over time, Spirituality as changing over time, Spirituality as community, Spirituality as healing, Integration, Prominence of color, Amount of space used, Blend of abstract and concrete images, Inclusion of nature, Choice of Media, and Art responses connected to spiritually associated words. Three overarching themes emerged as relevant to understanding the significance of spirituality and healing within a multicultural framework and the implications of art: Spirituality as highly personalized form of integration, Spirituality as offering a sense of both personal and universal connection, and Art making as a spiritual, healing practice. This study found that all the participants had a rich experience with spirituality and healing, and that this concept of the personal spiritual for each of them did in fact situate itself inside a more multicultural construct. The findings indicate the importance and relevance for spirituality to be included as part of the dialogue in healing and therapy, and more broadly, in culture. Further, it was found that not only was art making implicated within the spiritual and healing process, it was, in fact, a main tool of the spiritual practice.

Abstract:

Ramos, Nancy, and Jessica Chavez. "FACTORS OF RESISTANCE: SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION IN SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/870.

Abstract:
The discussion of spirituality and religion (S/R) in social work is a prevalent topic within the field. Literature suggests that social workers do not feel competent or comfortable discussing or utilizing S/R in practice. This study focused on identifying factors that may be causing resistance in social workers from the Inland Empire of Southern California towards addressing S/R with their clients. The researchers interviewed eight social workers from diverse areas of practice via telephone and in-person. Data was collected via audio-recording and later transcribed for thematic analysis. Participants were asked an array of questions including their own experience with their spirituality and current comfort level with asking their clients about S/R. Through the findings, it appears that social workers’ comfort level stems from various aspects including a sense of unease regarding their knowledge on various belief systems. The results indicated that once clients are asked about their spiritual and/or religious beliefs, clients are able to engage in a discussion about their definition of their own beliefs and determine the direction of the topic.

Nguyen, Chau. "Spirituality, Mindfulness, and Art-Making in Mitigating Compassion Fatigue." Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2019. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/774.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is an art exploration of the combined use of mindfulness practice, cultivated through a body-scan meditation, and art-making in mitigating compassion fatigue for a beginning clinician. The researcher used an arts-based inquiry with a quantitative component in her data collection and analysis. A reliable, evidenced-based test was self-administered at the beginning and end of the data collection to measure compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction. The arts-based inquiry included the researcher engaging in a body-scan meditation, journaling, and art-making over a period of four weeks as methods to process the relationship between mindfulness practice, art-making practice, and compassion fatigue in her clinical work at a community based mental health agency. The body-scan meditation provided insight into the clinician’s experiences and conceptual understandings. Journaling provided a tool for reflection and analysis of the researcher’s engagement in mindfulness and art-making. The art-making process offered a more in-depth understanding of the researcher’s application of mindfulness, as a tool, in clinical practice with her clients. The One-Canvas Process Painting can be utilized as a tool to reflect the researcher’s transformative learning process about her countertransference with clients. The data analysis in this study indicates that engaging in mindfulness practice and art-making practice can increase a beginning clinician’s compassion satisfaction within her clinical work.

Anderson, Kate. "Engaging the sacred| Relational spirituality training for direct support staff of Cedar Lake Lodge." Thesis, Mercer University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10263210.

Full text
Abstract:

This doctoral project focuses on the effectiveness of Relational Spirituality training administered to the direct support professionals at Cedar Lake Lodge, an intermediate care facility for adults with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities. The effectiveness was tested through administration of a survey prior to and following a professional training session offered by the researcher. The results seem to demonstrate an increase in spiritual integration for direct support professionals who participated. The reframing of spiritual life supports as an element of recognizing the individuality of each person supported at Cedar Lake Lodge seemed to have a positive effect on professionals of various age, religious, and cultural affiliations. The expanded perspective of spiritual support holds the potential for cultivating rich, person centered care that is mutually beneficial to the people offering and receiving care in the intermediate care facility setting.

Cohen, Ido. "Re-Turning to Wholeness| The Psycho-Spiritual Integration Process of Ayahuasca Ceremonies in Western Participants From a Jungian Perspctive." Thesis, California Institute of Integral Studies, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10279591.

Full text
Abstract:

Ayahuasca has been used for thousands of years for psychological, emotional, and spiritual healing as well as divination by different Indigenous tribes. In the last 20 years, Ayahuasca has gained increasing popularity in Western culture, and retreat centers all over the world offer healing for different issues by offering Ayahuasca ceremonies. Although extensive research on the benefits of Ayahuasca’s different psychological and physiological potential has been done, there are almost no empirical studies on the integration process of these experiences. This research aims to investigate the nature of participants’ Ayahuasca experiences, while focusing on their liminal phases and participants’ process of integrating their Ayahuasca experiences to create change.

The methodology used was an adaption of grounded theory in order to understand the integration process as it unfolds in time, with particular attention given to the phenomenology of Ayahuasca ceremonies and each individual’s subsequent integration process. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 individuals, aged 21 and above, at least 1 year after their experience participating in Ayahuasca ceremonies in retreat centers. Using Jungian psychological theory, this study aimed to develop an initial thematic description to help understand the somatic, emotional, psychological, and spiritual processes participants experienced in their integration process. Moreover, this study aimed to describe shared themes of what was helpful for participants in their integration process and its liminal stages.

Sbalchiero, Stefano. "I sacri crismi della scienza. La scienza come spiritualizzazione religiosa della comprensione della vita." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3422239.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on an integration of theoretical approaches derived from the social sciences and science and technology studies. Its aim is to examine if and to what extent modern science can be seen as a form of religion. The “theoretical challenge” is to redefine analytical perspectives used by sociology for the study of religions, more specifically, the paradigm of “implicit religion” and the concept of “spirituality” in order to ascertain whether certain aspects and elements of belief and religious experience are used by scientists as interpretative instruments when dealing with technoscientific concerns. This project, therefore, is not concerned with the connection between science and religion but is interested in an analysis of science as it is narrated, expressed by scientists with a particular attention to symbolic and religious references used by them to describe and share their scientific experiences. As the focus of the thesis is on the “theory of personal experience”, it had to be based methodologically on qualitative approaches, such as content analysis and in-depth interviewing. Only then is it possible to uncover and demonstrate the degree of commitment of the scientists to their scientific work. Alongside this empirical work, a critical analysis of secondary literature dealing with this topic was also undertaken. The first part of the thesis was based on the assumption that scientific communication in the public field is a key element in the development of scientific knowledge, and chose as a case study the reconstruction of the announcement of the full genome sequencing in 2000. The analysis focused on articles of three national Italian newspapers. It sought to demonstrate, in a first step, that the characteristics and images used in the articles which referred to the religious universe contribute to promoting the value of Science and in a second step that the role of the media, in this case, the national newspapers, is relevant not because they use this particular type of religiously connotated language, but more so because they convey and, at the same time, amplify the way in which scientists themselves express their own scientific work and discoveries. The second part of the thesis was based on an analysis of in-depth interviews conducted with scientists belonging to two different fields: Physics and Biology. The purpose of the interviews was not to ask scientists if science can be perceived more or less as a form of religion but to collect their experiences, their stories, the images in relation to themselves and their objects of study and to explore the sense and meanings given to their own scientific experience. This part also aimed at finding empirical evidence for scientists’ own use of the type of religious framing that had been discovered in the first part of the thesis. Further empirical evidence for a correlation between the media’s use of religious imagery when writing about science and scientists’ own use of such imagery was sought by interviewing priests who are also scientists. This provided an opportunity to achieve a comparative analysis between a religious vocation and confronting it with a scientific one and to uncover possible affinities between the two. The findings of the thesis demonstrate that the pervading characteristics, analogies and terms referring to a religious dimension do not only represent a particular form of communication of science but are rooted in what scientists themselves feel about their scientific experience. This shows that scientists’ talk about science presents characteristics which make science appear to be a form of religion both as a social representation and as the identity of the actors which are part of it.
