Abstract:
ABSTRACT Science and religion are two important foundations of human society. They both have a direct or indirect influence on peoples lives. However, in common sense it has been consolidated the idea that there is an irreconcilable conflict installed between reason and faith. Such antagonism has trivial advertising. Sometimes a reductionist approach to the subject is noticed, and thereby harmful images are perpetuated to the progress of these fields of knowledge, and thus a delay for civilization as a whole. When studying the scientific development throughout history, it is inevitable to consider its relationship with religious thought, or systems of religious belief, or even with religious institutions. Therefore, this work has the purpose to discuss the relationship between science and faith, from a historical perspective. Under these terms, this research seeks to understand the possibility of progress in both science and religion , under a reality of relative equilibrium and, perhaps, a more productive exchange between science and religion. The general literature on this subject was researched in order to learn the state of the art of this debate. From reading and systematically selecting the collected data, classifying and organizing it, several views on the subject were gathered to contribute to the reflection of the theme and show how it is a broad discussion. It was possible to conclude that the theory of conflict is not a satisfying explanation for the historical evidence. The relationship between science and religion is complex and multiple-sided, and they have contributed to the development of one another, consciously or not. This study opens up possibilities for a constructive interaction between the areas of knowledge.

Abstract:
This thesis set out to study the debate on circumcision of boys in Sweden. The study concerns itself with how categories and positions become rhetorical resources in the debate and how categories andpositions thus are made relevant. In order to get at what is made possible through the use of theserhetorical recourses this study has analyzed debate articles, official Swedish governmental documentsand the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Three interpretativerepertoires surfaced as distinct in this material and they are; Religious identity and belonging, medicine and the UNCRC. The analysis will therefore be structured and guided by these repertoires. As the debate is centred around the Human Rights Paradigm there is an ingrained ideological dilemmain the debate that can be explained as the tension between a Universal and a Cultural relativisticinterpretation of Human Rights. This tension will be discussed throughout the study. Severalconclusions can be drawn from the analysis: The various and contradictory positions allowed for bythe use of the UNCRC makes it an elusive tool in both theory and practice. The ideological dilemmatends to coerce the participants into opposing positions and even question the rhetorical tools utilizedin the debate. The child surfaces in various categories and at the end of this thesis the question remain; Is it a religious child or is it a child of religious parents?

Robert D. Linder
American society has been heavily influenced by religion, since before the United States existed as a nation. It has provided a sense of providential guidance and protection that has shaped or influenced internal politics and foreign policy alike. How were attitudes toward expansion and imperialism affected by religion throughout American history? Was the resultant ideology consistent? If not, what changed to cause a shift? The purpose of this thesis is to explore those questions. Using a wide breadth of material including primary and secondary sources, this thesis demonstrates that society was heavily influenced by religious rhetoric, whether spoken from the pulpit or in print. It further demonstrates how political leaders and religious leaders utilized rhetoric of divine causation and justification in addition to more tangible factors such as economics or security for expansionist thought. Significantly, concepts of racism were justified or reviled in religious terms. Ironically, opposing views on these topics both chose to use religion as their weapon to prove their points. Culminating at the time of the Spanish-American War of 1898, and the follow-on Philippine-American War, the imperial debate was heavily influenced by religion and was a milestone in transforming American national policy and thought.

Chipman, Angela Annette. "Discussing the underlying concerns in the abortion debate: searching for an effective model of discourse." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2684.

Full text
Abstract:
Both pro-life and pro-choice viewpoints on the moral status of abortion have important insights to offer, but these insights can be difficult for opponents to discern and appreciate. This thesis seeks to uncover and explain some of the underlying moral convictions that inform debates on abortion. Such an inquiry, undertaken within the context of religious ethics, is important for several reasons. First, it educates the public about religious and moral beliefs that are often hidden behind popular slogans. Second, it reveals some common moral convictions, and it may point to the possibility of greater moral agreement. Third, it also reveals stark differences. These differences may continue to divide people, but they ought at least to be better understood. Fourth, this inquiry has the potential to deepen mutual understanding, respect, and civility among people who have strong feelings about abortion, but are also people of good will, for it challenges fellow citizens to encounter each other as intelligent, concerned individuals who are doing what they can to construct a social order that reflects their deepest religious and moral values.

Ozer, Husnu. "Scientific Realism Debate In The Philosophy Of Science." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12611579/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary concern of this piece of work is to reconsider scientific realism debate in the philosophy of science. Accordingly, the overall aim is to come up with the clues of a viable scientific realist attitude in the face of anti-realist interpretations of scientific theories. To accomplish this aim, I make use of two modified versions of scientific realism, that is, &lsquo
epistemic structural realism&rsquo
and &lsquo
entity realism&rsquo
. Epistemic structural realism is a realist position of which proponents claim that the only knowable part of the reality is the structure of it which is expressed by the mathematical equations of our best scientific theories. On the other hand, according to entity realism, the only assured knowledge obtained from scientific theories is the existence of theoretical entities posited by these theories. I argue that a combination of the properly construed versions of these two positions might fulfill the afore-mentioned aim of this thesis.

Nixon, Kathrine Mary Gill. "A visualization of dissident voices in sixteenth-century Italy: a reflection of the religious debate in art." Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1044.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this dissertation is an exploration of the relationship between the Italian Reformation and some sixteenth-century religious paintings. It aims to discover if, when viewed chronologically, they provide a visualization of the course taken by the Italian Reformation. For sometime art historians have been aware that some religious paintings are at odds with the iconography of Catholic orthodoxy, such works are usually treated in isolation from each other. Here they are brought together and analyzed in the context of a widely disseminated religious debate in which artists were participants, if only as members of society, and not necessarily as members of a particular Protestant sect. It focuses on individual works by Fra Bartolomeo della Porta, Jacopo Pontormo, Lorenzo Lotto, Michelangelo, Jacopo Bassano, and Caravaggio. The paintings considered are interpreted in relation to the sermons of Savonarola, the Catechism and One Hundred and Ten Considerations, of Juan de Valdès, the Beneficio di Cristo, Italian evangelism, the spirituali, and radical groups such as the Anabaptists.

Mason-Wilkes, Will. "Science as religion? : science communication and elective modernism." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2018. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/109735/.

Full text
Abstract:
My central concern in this thesis is how science should be understood by the public. I argue that science should be understood, and valued for, the formative aspirations of the scientific community. The formative aspirations of the scientific community are the values members try to uphold as members of the group, even when this is not always possible. These aspirations are constitutive of the scientific ‘form of life’. I argue that science and religion are distinct forms of life, and through their formative aspirations can be differentiated from one another. Drawing on the theory of Elective Modernism (Collins and Evans 2017), I argue that the formative aspirations of science overlap with democratic values. Media representations of science shape public understanding. Non-fiction television is a ubiquitous and trusted medium for the communication of science. Non-fiction science television programme makers were interviewed to understand the process of science television production: the pressures, tensions and constraints inherent to this process. I analyse representations of science in British non-fiction television programmes and argue that a ‘religious’ portrayal of science can be identified in some programmes. I identify a contrasting ‘secular’ portrayal of science in other programmes. The religious portrayal presents science as providing a definitive creation narrative. In this portrayal scientific knowledge is presented as a set of certain and immutable truths which are revealed by nature with little or no human intervention. In this portrayal science is presented as providing meaning. The secular portrayal’s representation aligns more closely with a sociological understanding of science. In this portrayal scientific knowledge is represented as requiring human skill to produce and as being subject to change, revision and debate. Science in this portrayal is represented as producing both positive and negative outcomes for society. From the perspective of Elective Modernism, if citizens are to properly understand, engage with and value science they need an understanding informed by sociological conceptions of science which emphasise science’s formative aspirations as its defining characteristic. The requirements for the production of an ‘elective modernist’ portrayal of science, one which foregrounds the formative aspirations of science, are discussed. The problematic consequences of the religious portrayal of science are laid out. Presenting science as a religion disguises its formative aspirations. This provides an inaccurate picture of how science works and a widespread (mis)understanding of science as a religion would undermine democratic society.

Abstract:
In an effort to define which country will succeed in being the first of the two, I have given much attention to the East India Trade Company (EIC) and its influence on both India and China and the impact it has had on the social, political and economic change in both countries. While both countries have started off the same in the first half of the 20th century, their economic difference began with Xiaopings' rule in the late 70's of the 20th century. He is the one responsible for the opening of China, allowing it to have a steady takeoff and accelerate post-Cold War. India on the other hand has been in fear of foreign exploitation due to the EIC, making their development substantially slower. Religious and regional issues are a reason for India to not have enough focus on their human capital and their multi-party government, resulting in an inability to focus on the necessary reformation of the 'red tapes'. Another domestic policy missing in India, but strong in China is human capital, which is a private matter in India, while China has highly invested in it since The Great Leap Forward. Understanding the governance and economic policies of both countries provides an insight to both countries and supports my reasoning as to why I believe that China will - despite its' slowdown, be ahead of the race.

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Political Science, 2006.

Why are some countries more technologically innovative than others? The dominant explanation amongst political-economists is that domestic institutions determine national innovation rates. However, after decades of research, the empirical evidence for this relationship remains equivocal. There are simply many countries with "good" institutions that do not innovate at the technological frontier, and many countries with "bad" institutions that have nonetheless built impressive records of technological progress. Therefore, in this dissertation, in order to probe the sources of variance in national innovation rates, I analyze quantitative data on innovation, various domestic institutions, and four types of international relationships. First, I review the National Innovation Systems literature. Second, I test the Varieties of Capitalism theory of innovation. Third, I ask whether decentralized states are better at technological innovation than centralized states. In each case, I find that there exists little empirical evidence for an aggregate relationship between domestic institutions and technological innovation. That is, although a specific domestic institution or policy might appear to explain a particular instance of innovation, they fail to explain national innovation rates across time and space.
(cont.) However, the empirical evidence does suggest that a country's international relationships may be the missing piece to the national innovation rate puzzle. More specifically, the evidence presented in this dissertation suggests that certain kinds of international relationships (e.g. capital goods imports, foreign direct investment, educational exchanges) do affect national innovation rates in the aggregate. And countries which have these kinds of relationships with the lead innovating nations tend to become more innovative than states which do not, almost regardless of their domestic institutions. In other words, explaining national innovation rates may not be so much a domestic institutions story as it is an international story. My empirical evidence includes data on simple patent counts, patents weighted by forward citations, science and engineering publications (both simple counts and citations-weighted), and high-technology exports.

Omar, Majeda. "William James : science, truth and religion." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/27143.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that William James's view of science is crucial for an understanding of his position on such philosophical questions as truth and religious belief. It attempts to show how he assimilated certain doctrines of science, in particular, positivist science, within his pragmatic philosophy. The aim throughout is to show how his views on such fundamental questions can be better understood and evaluated. This thesis is divided into three parts. Part One is an exploration of the main elements of James's view of science. The discussion includes an examination of James's account of scientific method and his stance on such concepts as hypothesis, scientific theories and laws. Part Two examines James's theory of truth. It attempts to show how his theory of truth can be formulated in terms of two conditions, those of verifiability and satisfactoriness, of which the latter is contingent on the former. Part Three is an analysis of the main characteristics of James's philosophy of religion. It investigates his treatment of questions relating to religion from his pragmatist standpoint.

Abstract:
Divine healing has been often seen in opposition to human healing. The two spheres, have been considered as separate, both in space and in terms of elements involved. Asclepian sanctuaries have been mostly presented as domains of exclusively divine intervention, without any involvement of the human factor, possibly with the sole exception of dream interpretation. However, the written testimonies of temple cures, both those in the form of cure inscriptions dedicated in sanctuaries and the literary accounts of the incubation experience, give us reasons to suppose that the practical side of the functioning of the asklepieia could have assumed the involvement of human medicine, with the extent of this involvement differing in various epochs. Regardless of physicians' participation or its lack in the procedure, the methods applied in sanctuary healing appear to have evolved in parallel to the developments in medicine and their popular perception. Archaeological finds as well as the image of Asclepius as the god of medicine itself seem to confirm this. Nevertheless, by no means should these connections between the two spheres be treated as transforming the space of religious meaning into hospitals functioning under the auspices of a powerful god. Although acknowledging them does entail inclusion of human medicine within the space dedicated to Asclepius, it does not thereby deny the procedure of incubation its religious and metaphysical dimension. On the contrary, it shows that to the Greek mind divine and human healing were not mutually exclusive, but overlapped and coincided with each other, proving that the Greek sense of rationality was quite different from the modern and could comprise far more than what we call today "scientific thinking".

The thesis focuses on what impact the use of idealizations has on the realism/anti-realism debate concerning the fundamental laws of physics. My aim is modest. It is not to present an argument for either the realist or the anti-realist position but rather to show where the debate stands once we have considered recent arguments by Laymon and Cartwright which have made use of the notion of idealization assumptions. My intent is to point out the difficulties of Laymon's argument for realism in the hope of showing what must be accomplished in providing a more convincing argument for realism. I will also suggest that although Laymon's proposal is problematic, it still poses a serious problem for van Fraassen's form of anti-realism, constructive empiricism.

Abstract:
The postmodern philosophical project, which aims to undermine the universalistic, metanarrational and transcendental aspects of traditional Western thought and to bring about an awareness of 'otherness' through deconstruction, has been dismissed out of hand by some theorists. This thesis aims to demonstrate the following points: firstly, that the postmodern insights and critique of the Enlightenment project are well founded, that there do not exist any universal or transcendental truths.Secondly, that the attempts of postmodern theorists to derive from these insights any implication for politics, society, or the self, whether of an emancipatory or of a pragmatic nature, are misplaced. The validity of the second point will be supported by a demonstration that there is an inevitable use of a priori truths in the work of the chosen thinkers as well as everyday discourse; and that postmodern theory, highlighted in the specific concerns of the deconstructed 'other', remains very much within the liberal democratic tradition, which can itself be seen as a product of the Enlightenment project. The philosophers Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Richard Rorty, and Alasdair MacIntyre have been chosen for analysis as their work exhibits the most fundamental tensions within the postmodern stance, tensions which need to be delineated and examined for an appraisal of the future of postmodern political philosophy. Each chapter is divided into sections on Rationality, The Self, and Politics and Society, in part to try to simplify and make accessible their often complex and vague theses, but also as an attempt to reflect how their own rationalities, and views of rationality, are developed into political commentary and prescription.

Abstract:
This study addresses issues concerning religion in the public sphere, brought about by the debates over the perceived resurgence of religion and the post-secular. The aim is to analyze the participation of religious actors in the public, using three newspaper debate pages as the empirical material. Building on theories by Casanova, especially his concept of public religions, as well as mediatization theory and Habermas' writings on religion in the public sphere, 639 opinion pieces signed by religious actors were analyzed. The mixed-methods content analysis was conducted in two steps: first a quantitative overview of the religious actors published, to what extent and on what issues. The second step consisted of three qualitative case studies based on the results of the first step: an argument analysis of the debate over same-sex marriage; an exploration of the specific position of the Church of Sweden and the idea of the national church as a public utility; and finally a discourse analysis of articles by Jewish and Muslim authors. These were analyzed on the basis of criteria for public religions developed from Casanova’s theory and from the media logic of debate articles. While the results show no clear increase in the number of religious actors during the period under scrutiny, one notices a clear presence of Muslim and Jewish actors, eventhough Christians of varying denominations dominate the material. There are also clear differences between the different religions: minority religion contributions are limited in terms of issues and scope, while Christian groups write about more varied issues. Muslims often relate to negative media discourse towards Islam, while Jewish signatories write on a limited number of themes closely related to the group itself. In many articles, one found a meta-debate over the place of religion in the public sphere even when specific issues were debated. The contribution of this dissertation is to critically discuss the concepts and assumptions underlying the debate over the place of religion in the public sphere. It stresses the importance of media perspectives as well as empirical studies for analyzing issues of authority, visibility, private/public and religion in late modern, mediated contexts.

Klein, Michael Joseph. "The Rhetoric of Repugnance: Popular Culture and Unpopular Notions in the Human Cloning Debate." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28074.

Full text
Abstract:
An ethical frame grounded in science fiction literature shaped the discourse on cloning following the announcement of Dolly-the-sheepâ s birth through nuclear transfer. Using methodologies drawn from the social shaping of technology (SST) and rhetoric of science, my analysis demonstrates how individuals and institutions, including the media, ethicists, policymakers, and legislators, appropriated and re-appropriated this ethical frame. In doing so, they employed science-fiction stories as rhetorical tropes, thereby providing the public with a frame for understanding the social issues involved with cloning. However, these institutions used science fiction as a way to simplify and present ethical arguments that silenced dissent rather than encouraged dialog. While ethics discourse can validly make use of literature in debates about technology, such a simplistic view of the literature misrepresents the themes the authors explored in their works and limits discussion. I conclude by offering a deeper analysis and reading of some of these stories, relying on the texts themselves rather than the myths that have evolved around these texts as my primary source material. Such a reading provides a valuable counter-narrative to the on-going debate, one that more adequately explains the effects of technology in a society. In short, this dissertation demonstrates that the reductionist interpretation of works from the science fiction genre had real effects on policy formulation. People utilized their literary-derived perceptions of cloning in political discussions about technology. Thus, policy discussions of the perceived effects of the technology developed much of their meaning and significance from fictional depictions of the technology.

The United States has developed a reputation for consistently failing to respond to mass killing and genocide throughout history. The conventional wisdom is that the United States has the resources and intelligence to act, but fails to do so because of a lack of political will. However, a closer examination of history reveals that although the modal response of the United States is indeed to refrain from devoting significant resources to these crises, at times the United States reverses course to pursue policies aimed at assisting victims of atrocity. Previous analyses have not fully explained the sources this policy variation. Drawing on extensive archival research, this dissertation proposes a theory explaining when these shifts in US policy occur. I suggest that three factors-the level at which dissent occurs within the government, the degree of congressional pressure, and the direction of a variable that I term political liability-are responsible for shifting US policy toward a more robust response. I illustrate the theory with case studies covering US responsiveness to the following cases: the Holocaust (193 8-1945) under presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman; mass killing in Bosnia (1992-1995) under presidents George H.W. Bush and William J. Clinton; and mass killing in Rwanda (1994) under Clinton. Abstract:
In this thesis, I consider the problem of relating science and religion, and search for a solution that will provide a useful model both for individual believers as well as professional scientists and theologians. In this search, I take up the works of three of the most influential thinkers to write on the subject: Andrew Dickson White, Alfred North Whitehead, and Ian G. Barbour. I survey each of their texts and evaluate the philosophy of science and religion that they present. In the end, I conclude that the version of process philosophy adopted by Ian Barbour offers the most promising solution to the problem of relating science and religion.

Dick, Barbara Kathleen. "Modern Arabic science fiction : science, society and religion in selected texts." Thesis, Durham University, 2016. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11907/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines a selection of original SF or SF-inflected texts written in Arabic from the 1960s to the present day. It is a thematic study, considering their presentation of and attitudes to science and technology, utopias and ideal societies and religion. Although some critics attempt to figure SF as a continuation of the Thousand and One Nights fantastical tradition and the mirabile literature of the Middle Ages, Arabic science fiction, as an essentially modern genre, traces its earliest origins to the late 1950s in Egypt. It has experienced several sudden efflorescences during the following decades in the texts of a handful of authors, most of whom are Egyptian. In the past ten years, following a 2006 seminal essay by Iraqi-German engineer and SF critic Achmed Khammas on “The Almost Complete Lack of the Element of ‘Futureness’”, media and academic interest in Arabic science fiction has burgeoned, with both established (Ahmed Khalid Towfik) and new (Noura Noman) authors publishing in the genre in the past five years. In light of the relative lack of criticism of the Arabic corpus, this thesis seeks to begin the project of conducting a full critical study through a reading of selected texts from the 1960s to the present day, the majority of which have not previously been translated into English. The approach taken is broadly sociological, examining the texts in the light of three themes outlined above – science, ideal societies and the treatment of religion - that frequently frame SF criticism in English.

Crovella, R. William II. "The Burke-Paine Debate and its influence on the new republic." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1523245.

Abstract:

Following the commencement of the French Revolution in 1789, a debate erupted in the Atlantic world known as the Burke-Paine Debate. This debate was part of a larger Atlantic movement known as "the pamphlet war" of the 1790s, a series of polemical writings concerning the pros and cons of the Revolution. Alarmed at the broad scope of the French Revolutionaries, Englishman Edmund Burke opened the pamphlet war in 1790 with a scathing rebuke entitled Reflections on the Revolution in France. This in turn elicited the response of Thomas Paine, who derisively rebuked Burke in kind in 1791 with Rights of Man, supporting the Revolution's ostensible aim toward republicanism. This thesis examines how the ideas which animated the Burke-Paine Debate influenced the debate over the expansion of democracy in the early American republic. While the Debate influenced political discussion throughout the nineteenth century, it also serves as a paradigm for the creation of a dichotomy between liberal and conservative politics. The thesis provides a comparative analysis of how the ideas of Burke and Paine were received, reported, and repackaged during the nineteenth century, providing as well an intellectual history of the roles of ideas in American history.

How have changes in the elite discussion of reproductive health narratives affected the debate on abortion and influenced state legislation and popular opinion? Using analysis of broadcast transcripts from CNN and FOX News, I examine the arguments articulated by politicians, activists, and members of the media on issues concerning reproductive health. I argue that, beginning in 1996, conservatives used the venue provided by broadcast media to seize on changes to the political climate and frame debate to their advantage. Continually, conservatives forced liberals into reactionary positions through discussion of "partial-birth abortion," expansion of narratives, and-most recently-misinformation. By dictating the terms of the discussion, conservatives lessened the impact of liberal narratives and saw gains in state legislation and public opinion as a result.

Maass, Alexandra. "La religion du corps en Californie." Thesis, Paris 4, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA040134.

Full text
Abstract:
The body’s new frontier is both an esthetic and scientific quest, with the wild dream of reaching an ideal beauty and immortality - or at least living better and longer. In California, the body and its cult are so important therefore we can safely say that it is a religion. This religion of the body is primarily linked to the Divine since in the classical point of view, the body is either linked to sin or is a way to reach God, as the oriental religions believe. From ancient Greece to the oriental influences, not forgetting how the body is perceived in California’s history and its relationship to the Divine, we will slowly become aware that this link is somehow being overshadowed by a personal appropriation of the body both triggered by the 1960’s narcissism and social norms. The typical californian seeks experiment and pushes boundaries using the body as a medium, while striving to reach physical perfection. Of course this cannot go without the growing of a massive market, hence the connexion between the religion of the body and its mercantile aspect. That link not only reflects the amount of products and services as well as the whole industry behind them, it also brings forward the fact that the body is considered as an object one has to invest in and capitalize on both the future and the present moment. As in all types of religion, there is a part of fanaticism and going astray. Its impact cannot be overlooked. The ultimate question is the role of science in the body’s evolution. What has become the new scientific religion of the body slowly replaces the initial link to the Divine, bringing mankind towards more knowledge, mastery, and control over its destiny

Hosseini, Beheshti Seyed Ali Reza. "The politics of cultural diversity : a survey in the liberal-communitarian debate." Thesis, University of Hull, 1998. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:8030.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the politics of cultural diversity through a survey in the debate between liberal and communitarian thinkers. My aim is to show which side of the debate represents a more adequate position in relation to the politics of the existing cultural diversity in western liberal democracies compatible with the claims of multiculturalism which have emerged in the past two decades. In order to do so, I have chosen a selection of philosophers from each group: Alasdair Macintyre, Charles Taylor and Michael Walzer from the communitarians: and John Rawls, Joseph Raz and Will Kymlicka from the liberals. The critical examinations of their arguments which are presented here concern the normative aspects of the problem and concentrate on three main themes: (i) their concept of the self; (ii) their accounts of the foundations of political morality: and (iii) their suggestions for the politics of cultural diversity. Apart from the Introduction and the Conclusion, the thesis consists of two main parts: Part I contains an introduction to the communitarian critique of modernity and liberalism, followed by three chapters on the selected communitarians. In the same way, Part II consists of an introduction to liberal political thought and three chapters on the selected liberal thinkers. In appreciation of the extent to which cultures may differ from each other in their ideal models of morality, the role which culture plays in constituting one's identity and the extent to which it is affected by communal relationships, and the significance of conceptions of the good life in political morality, communitarians' arguments seem more adequate and fruitful than those of their liberal counterparts, in respect of the politics of cultural communities. The politics of cultural diversity. i.e. the political relations between cultural communities, however, seems to be left with modus vivendi models which can be developed into a model of civil association of cultural communities.

Mota-Back, Xóchitl Reneé, and Xóchitl Reneé Mota-Back. "Expertly Framed: How Science and Evidence Came to Dominate the Sex Ed Debate." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625675.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a historical analysis of the dominant framing practices utilized by both liberal and conservative advocacy organizations and individuals in the domain of sex education throughout the 20th century and into the 21st. It is in two parts. In the first part, I construct a strategic narrative to answer the question why did conservative organizations, despite their documented anti-science sentiments, begin to embrace expertise-based frames? Utilizing a mixed-method approach, I analyze primary and secondary documents to trace the diffusion of expertise-based framing practices by liberal and conservative actors in the field of sex education. I find that the domain of sex education has always utilized expertise-based frames, though it has experienced disruptions spurred by major socio-political shifts (e.g., McCarthyism, the AIDS epidemic). In the second part, I present the results of an experimental vignette study. While the strategic narrative focuses on organizational and institutional shifts in framing practices, the experiment seeks insight into whether and how "expert cues" are noticed by a non-scientific professional audience, specifically parents (N=202) of school-aged children (5–17). The results provide weak support for the claim that parents will more favorably evaluate a sex education lesson plan when it includes expert cues, irrespective of their religious and political identities. I conclude by discussing theoretical implications for the study of framing, sociology of science, and public understanding of science as well as future directions for this research.

Mutch, Maryanne. "Contested honour: the clash of international and domestic norms in Jordan's honour crime debate." Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=110712.

Full text
Abstract:
While a noteworthy amount of scholarship in the last decade has sought to explain the mechanisms through which international norms are diffused to domestic arenas, substantial gaps in our knowledge still remain. In particular, there has been a lack of hypothesis building regarding how international norms are diffused into contexts where there is strong societal support for existing norms which run counter to the promoted norm. Looking at the emergence, growth, and development of the anti-honour crime movement in Jordan (1980-present), this thesis seeks to explain how international human rights norms, particularly 'right to life,' gained increased salience within this context. In this thesis, it is argued that the success of norm promotion in situations 'cultural mis-match' lies in the strategic agency of highly motivated domestic actors. However, these efforts may be greatly impeded by the existence of institutions which underlie existing norms and the emergence of countermovements which seek to defend established norms and customs. The thesis also suggests that international pressure may have diverse and unanticipated effects when trying to promote new norms in contexts where strong support for existing norms is rooted at the societal level. In particular, in cases where those international bodies lack legitimacy within the local population, these efforts may backfire and cause reflexive re-entrenchment of the pre-existing local norms.

This dissertation is an examination of the foreign policy debates during and about the Korean War that played out in America's leading political opinion journals from 1950-1953. From left to right along the ideological spectrum, these journals include The Nation, The New Republic, Commonweal, The New Leader, The American Mercury, and The Freeman. Such an analysis uncovers some of most important ideological currents that ran through American political and intellectual life during the mid-20th century and challenges some long-standing historiographical assumptions about this period in American political and intellectual history. First, the foreign policy debates inspired by the Korean War were much more robust than is typically appreciated. Second, there was consistent and substantive disagreement between different camps of liberals, namely, between left liberals and hawkish liberals, to the point that hawkish liberals often favored positions more aligned with those of conservatives than with those of their fellow liberals. This tension between different strands of liberalism suggests that the notion that a "liberal consensus" reigned supreme in American political and intellectual life during the early years of the Cold War may be in need of qualification or revision. Third, the conservative arguments made in the pages of publications like The Freeman and The American Mercury reveal that the conservative movement was much more coherent and mature in the early 1950s, years before the emergence of William F. Buckley, Jr.'s National Review, than is generally thought. In sum, an examination of the "forgotten debate" about this forgotten war has much to teach us about the political and intellectual history of the United States in the mid-20111 century and beyond.
