Abstract:
Le sujet principal de ce mémoire est le comportement asymptotique de la géométrie et topologie des variétés localement symétriques Gamma\ X quand le volume tend vers l’infini. Notre premier résultat porte sur la convergence Benjamini-Schramm des 2 ou 3-variétés hyperboliques arithmétiques. Une suite d'espaces localement symétriques (Gamma_n\ X) converge Benjamini-Schramm vers l'espace symétrique X si pour chaque R>0 la limite de \Vol((\Gamma\X)_{
The main theme of this work is the study of geometry and topology of locally symmetric spaces Gamma\ X as ther volume Vol(\Gamma\ X) tends to infinity. Our first main result concerns the Benjamini-Schramm convergence for arithmetic hyperbolic 2 or 3-manifolds. A sequence of locally symmetric spaces (Gamma_n\ X) converges Benjamini-Schramm to X if and only if for every radius R>0 the limit Vol((Gamma\ X)_{

We disclose the origin of anisotropic percolation perimeters in terms of the Stochastic Loewner Evolution (SLE) process. Precisely, our results from extensive numerical simulations indicate that the perimeters of multi-layered and directed percolation clusters at criticality have as scaling limits the Loewner evolution of an anomalous Brownian motion, being superdiffusive and subdiffusive, respectively. The connection between anomalous diffusion and fractal anisotropy is further tested by using long-range power-law correlated time series (fractional Brownian motion) as driving functions in the evolution process. The fact that the resulting traces are distinctively anisotropic corroborates our hypothesis. Under the conceptual framework of SLE, our study therefore reveals new perspectives for mathematical and physical interpretations of non-Markovian processes in terms of anisotropic paths at criticality and vice-versa.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the geometry of objects from 2-dimensional statistical physics in the continuum. Chapter 1 is an introduction to Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLE). SLEs are the canonical family of non-self-intersecting, conformally invariant random curves with a domain-Markov property. The family is indexed by a parameter, usually denoted by κ, which controls the regularity of the curve. We give the definition of the SLEκ process, and summarise the proofs of some of its properties. We give particular attention to the Rohde-Schramm theorem which, in broad terms, tells us that an SLEκ is a curve. In Chapter 2 we introduce the Gaussian free field (GFF), a conformally invariant random surface with a domain-Markov property. We explain how to couple the GFF and an SLEκ process, in particular how a GFF can be unzipped along a reverse SLEκ to produce another GFF. We also look at how the GFF is used to define Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surfaces, and how thick points of the GFF relate to the quantum gravity measure. Chapter 3 introduces a diffusion on LQG surfaces, the Liouville Brownian motion (LBM). The main goal of the chapter is to complete an estimate given by N. Berestycki, which gives an upper bound for the Hausdor dimension of times that a γ-LBM spends in α-thick points for γ, α ∈ [0, 2). We prove the corresponding, tight, lower bound. In Chapter 4 we give a new proof of the Rohde-Schramm theorem (which tells us that an SLEκ is a curve), which is valid for all values of κ except κ = 8. Our proof uses the coupling of the reverse SLEκ with the free boundary GFF to bound the derivative of the inverse of the Loewner flow close to the origin. Our knowledge of the structure of the GFF lets us find bounds which are tight enough to ensure continuity of the SLEκ trace.

Abstract:
Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE(kappa)) is an important contemporary tool for identifying critical scaling limits of two-dimensional statistical systems. The SLE(kappa) one-parameter family of processes can be viewed as a special case of a more general, two-parameter family of processes we denote SLE(kappa, mu). The SLE(kappa, mu) process is defined for kappa>0 and real numbers mu; it represents the solution of the chordal Loewner equations under special conditions on the driving function parameter which require that it is a Brownian motion with drift mu and variance kappa. We derive properties of this process by use of methods applied to SLE(kappa) and application of Girsanov's Theorem. In contrast to SLE(kappa), we identify stationary asymptotic behavior of SLE(kappa, mu). For kappa in (0,4] and mu > 0, we present a pathwise construction of a process with stationary temporal increments and stationary imaginary component and relate it to the limiting behavior of the SLE(kappa, mu) generating curve. Our main result is a spatial invariance property of this process achieved by defining a top-crossing probability for points in the upper half plane with respect to the generating curve.

Abstract:
We consider Benjamini-Schramm limits of Rauzy Graphs of low-complexity words. Low-complexity words are infinite words (over a finite alphabet), for which the number of subwords of length n is bounded by some Kn --- examples of such a word include the Thue-Morse word 01101001... and the Fibonacci word. Rauzy graphs Rn (omega) have the length n subwords of omega as vertices, and the oriented edges between vertices indicate that two words appear immediately adjacent to each other in omega (with overlap); the edges are also equipped with labels, which indicate what "new letter" was appended to the end of the terminal vertex of an edge. In a natural way, the labels of consecutive edges in a Rauzy graph encode subwords of omega. The Benjamini-Schramm limit of a sequence of graphs is a distribution on (possibly infinite) rooted graphs governed by the convergence in distribution of random neighborhoods of the sequence of finite graphs. In the case of Rauzy graphs without edge-labelings, we establish that the Rauzy graphs of aperiodic low-complexity words converge to the line graph in the Benjamini-Schramm sense. In the same case, but for edge-labelled Rauzy graphs, we also prove that that the limit exists when the frequencies of all subwords in the infinite word, omega, are well defined (when the subshift of omega is uniquely ergodic), and we show that the limit can be identified with the unique ergodic measure associated to the subshift generated by the word. The eventually periodic (i.e. finite) cases are also shown. Finally, we show that for non-uniquely ergodic systems, the Benjamini-Schramm limit need not exist ---though it can in some instances--- and we provide examples to demonstrate the variety of possible behaviors.
