Abstract:
Abstract:
AbstractThis paper gives an account of the argument of Schopenhauer's essay On the Freedom of the Human Will, drawing also on his other works. Schopenhauer argues that all human actions are causally necessitated, as are all other events in empirical nature, hence there is no freedom in the sense of liberum arbitrium indifferentiae. However, our sense of responsibility or agency (being the ‘doers of our deeds’) is nonetheless unshakeable. To account for this Schopenhauer invokes the Kantian distinction between empirical and intelligible characters. The paper highlights divergences between Schopenhauer and Kant over the intelligible character, which for Schopenhauer can be neither rational nor causal. It raises the questions whether the intelligible character may be redundant to Schopenhauer's position, and whether it can coherently belong to an individual agent, suggesting that for Schopenhauer a more consistent position would have been to deny freedom of will to the individual.

Abstract:
Schopenhauer criticized Kant's moral theory on the grounds that it was non-empirical and inadequate, because it attempted to establish morality on the basis of reason and duty. Contrary to Kant, Schopenhauer argued that genuine morality is irrational, based on compassion, and a human product, hence that it could be studied empirically. Schopenhauer established the ‘science of morality’ which occupied the attention of a host of turn of the century precursors of the social sciences, especially Durkheim. Durkheim's version of the science of moral facts is compared and contrasted with Schopenhauer's critique of Kant, and it is demonstrated that Durkheim tends (o follow Schopenhauer's lead. Problems with Durkheim's and Schopenhauer's critiques of Kantian ethics are also discussed.

Abstract:
This article examines Arthur Schopenhauer’s theory of boredom. In traditional interpretations of this theory, boredom is understood to be a form of suffering and a key component in Schopenhauer’s argument for the claim that all life is suffering. While such interpretations are correct, I argue that they only capture a single feature of the experience that Schopenhauer describes. Schopenhauer also understands boredom to occasion a unique insight into the nature of reality, and boredom should thereby additionally be thought of as an epistemically significant emotion. To elucidate this epistemic quality, I interpret Schopenhauer’s concept of boredom as revealing the miserable condition of the world, where such revelation compels one to wonder about the nature of this condition, thereby founding a philosophical attitude. Through an evaluation of Schopenhauer’s conceptions of boredom and wonder, I demonstrate that Schopenhauer ultimately conceives boredom as crucial for the development of a philosophical attitude toward existence.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the contribution made by Schopenhauer to the development of the movement for the protection of animals. The author reconstructs some details of Schopenhauer’s interaction with the founder of the first German societies for the protection of animals Ignaz Perner. The article discusses the criticism of the Cartesian worldview and Christian morality proposed by Schopenhauer, with which Schopenhauer associates the lawlessness of animals that was relevant for his era. The article critically reconstructs some of Schopenhauer’s judgments regarding the reflection of the status of animals in language, in the Bible, and in legislation. The author compares the status of animals in Schopenhauer’s philosophy and in classical German philosophy on the example of Kant and Hegel. The article discusses the criticism of Kant presented by Schopenhauer for “idolatry of reason”, on the basis of which Kant, following Descartes and Christian morality, continues to be in error regarding the existence of an ontological gap between man and animals. The article gives a detailed reconstruction of Schopenhauer’s doctrine of animals, including the idea of the animal kingdom as one of the stages of objectification of will, the interpretation of the aesthetic image of animals and the creative drives of the animals themselves, and the justification for the need for compassionate behavior towards animals. The article criticizes the widespread perception of Schopenhauer as a vegetarian, and provides Schopenhauer’s own arguments about the necessity of eating meat. The article discusses Schopenhauer’s doctrine of animals in the context of modern animal and vegan studies. The article concludes that Schopenhauer was the first European philosopher to offer a popular theoretical justification for the need for an ethical attitude towards animals, which formed the basis of the animal welfare movement in Germany.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the Arthur Schopenhauer’s contradictory doctrines of ideas. The analysis is accompanied by a discussion of historical and philosophical mysteries directly related to Schopenhauer’s doctrines of ideas. His theory of ideas is explored in its ontological and aesthetic aspects as well as in its relation to Schopenhauer’s ethics. In the article, Schopenhauer’s definition of idea is analyzed in comparison with that of Plato and Kant. Despite the fact that Schopenhauer himself claimed that he understood the notion of idea in its true, Platonic sense, the article claims that he largely departed from Plato. Since the idea is enriched by the properties of thing-in-itself, it remains a representation accessible to cognition and becomes an intermediate link between the will and the individual. The article discusses the place of ideas in Schopenhauer’s ontology. The article distinguishes and characterizes the stages of objectification of the will, which Schopenhauer calls ideas. The ambivalent status of the idea gives rise to many other historical and philosophical problems. One of them is the determination of the status of a comprehensible (intelligible) character, which Schopenhauer declares to be another direct objectification of the will, besides ideas. Further, the article investigates the process of cognizing an idea. The author discusses Schopenhauer’s aesthetic teaching in connection to the fact that Schopenhauer declares that cognition of the world of ideas is the goal of art. The article examines Schopenhauer’s classification of arts and separately problematizes the status of music. The relationship between the philosophy of art and Schopenhauer’s ethical doctrines, in which he offers two ways to salvation, is discussed. The concepts of asceticism and genius are compared. The article suggests that Schopenhauer's ethical doctrine can be presented as a complement to his doctrine of ideas. The final part of the article briefly formulates the main problems of Schopenhauer’s theory of ideas and discusses their possible solutions.

Abstract:
In a bold series of pronouncements, Arthur Schopenhauer maintains that the Kantian thing-in-itself is Will. The division between the world as Will and representation, with its impressive array of implications, is Schopenhauer's most important and distinctive contribution to metaphysics. To understand what Schopenhauer means by ‘Will’ (der Wille) as opposed to the empirical ‘will’, and his reasons for identifying thing-in-itself with Will, we must look in detail at two related arguments by which Schopenhauer proposes to link these concepts. The arguments appear in the first and second editions of Schopenhauer's masterwork, The World as Will and Representation. The differences between the two versions appear to represent a change in his thinking about the most persuasive way to demonstrate the nature of thing-in-itself. The arguments are reconstructed for the sake of comparison, and critically evaluated in light of a variety of objections. While Schopenhauer's first, analogical, argument is inconclusive, his second argument offers a highly defensible inference identifying thing-in-itself as Will.

Abstract:
D. H. Lawrence began to read Schopenhauer and Nietzsche while a student at Nottingham University College. The influence of the two philosophers on his early short stories and his novels from The White Peacock (1911) through to The Rainbow (1915) has been considered at length in books and essays on Lawrence. There has been little discussion to date, though, of the presence of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche in Women in Love (1920). The unmistakably Nietzschean term Wille zur Macht (will to power) appears in the novel and has attracted some critical comment, but there is no equally obvious reference to Schopenhauer, and discussion of Schopenhauer’s influence has been accordingly slight. Lawrence believed, however, that every novel should have a ‘background metaphysic’, and careful examination of Women in Love reveals that its metaphysic, or ‘theory of being’, derives from a combination of Schopenhauer’s and Nietzsche’s philosophical theories.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the eastern influence received by Schopenhauer during the formation from his philosophy and the consequence generated in his delayed texts in the religion concept. It is focused, mainly the Oupnek\'hat (Upaniñad) work, translated by Anquetil-Duperron in 1801/1802 and studied by Schopenhauer since 1814. In it are contained eastern concepts as Maya, \"Illos tu és\" (Tat tvam asi) and Trimurti, that had been used, respectively, for Schopenhauer in his theories of the representation (Vorstellung), compassion (Mitleid) and Will of life (Wille zum Leben). It is tried, thus, to bring authenticity for the innumerable affirmations of Schopenhauer that place the Upaniñad, altogether the philosophies of Plato and Kant, as the main influences for the arise of its thought. Such eastern teachings received in little age had contributed Schopenhauer to interpret the religions as Metaphysical allegoric. But, the most transparent would have to be valued (Hinduism and Buddhism) on the other hand, the obscurest than would have to be rejected (Judaism and Islam). At last, the present dissertation aim to detach the eastern thought in the work of Schopenhauer, therefore the same already was white of injury and forgetfulness on the part of many studies.

Abstract:

Abstract : This work approaches and defends the conception of "practical metaphysics", as a correlative of the "theoretical metaphysics" of Arthur Schopenhauer. This work develops and defends the conception of "practical metaphysics", as a correlative of the theoretical metaphysics of Arthur Schopenhauer. The thesis of practical metaphysics is only suggested by Schopenhauer in his thinking on magic as an empirical and experimental metaphysics of philosophy that is developed in The world as will and as representation. Given its quite distinct character, in the corpus of Schopenhauer's philosophy, practical metaphysics emerges as an important path for the factual understanding of philosophical knowledge, as a "real test" of philosophy. By presenting a connection in effectiveness that escapes the domain of the principle of reason, the phenomena of practical metaphysics are investigated from the concept of "sympathy." Sympathy, which functions as an empirical concept of metaphysics, brings together "compassion," "sexual love," and "magic," and is defined as the empirical irruption of metaphysical identity, that is, irruption of the will as a thing in itself, to the plurality of apparent manifestations. Thus, compassion is sympathy in justice and, to a greater degree, in charity; sexual love is in the sexual act and passionate love; and magic in sympathetic healing and animal magnetism.

The present research project aims at analysing the role played by the themes „love“ and „death“ in the context of schopenhauerian philosophy as a whole, by means of a close investigation of the development of Schopenhauer’s refletions on both themes since the beginnings of his philosophycal efforts. We shall try to determine in what measure may the theme of death have worked as first motivation and as an “original seed” for his philosophical especulations, as well as this theme’s profound imbrication with that of love, understood as life generating impulse. We are also interrested in both the naturalistic and the ethical approaches presented by Schopenhauer reflections on love and death. On the one hand, he gives us a naturalistic account of the mentioned problems, but soon, in the other hand, he leaves it clear that these problems have also an ethical dimension. In his explorations of that dimension, his thinking appears to be heavily supported by vedic philosophy. Thus, we shall also investigate how does Schopenhauer menage to articulate nature sciences and his vedic studies

The view on the philosophy of Schopenhauer as a pessimistic philosopher will be partially undone with the investigations. Concluding a new look under a known author, no longer pegged to the classical view of pessimism, but with a new perspective of his philosophy as practice, posture. Assigning current importance both to Schopenhauer and the theme of this investigation. Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the problem of teleology in Schopenhauer\'s work. In our work, we seek an understanding of the existing modulation of the Kantian\'s \"as if\", to show how the interplay between will and Representation modifies the sense of teleological judgment of the Critique of Judgment. In this reading key, we seek to set up an argument to suggest the existence of a regulative horizon coupled with the primordial intuition of will. As a consequence, we find, in this modulation, an expansion of the problem of organism onto a question about the essence of nature. As a result, the displacement of the Kantian\'s theory of judgment reflection transforms this reading about the natural world in a question of teleology in the metaphysics of will, and transforming the problem of purpose in nature in issue as to the purpose in the field of ethics. Is it that presents the paradox of individuality: the crisis between the assertion of the individual and the destination of the world

The study of Freud s writings, from the perspective laid down by the convergences and divergences promoted by Freud between psychoanalysis and Schopenhauer s philosophy, enables to investigate on the possible points that put nearer or farther the ways in which Freud and Schopenhauer face the tragic. Halfway in the transition from the XIXth century, which was marked by the theoretical optimism of rationalism and the primacy of conscience, to the XXth century, which main characteristic was the crisis of the reason, psychoanalysis has emerged as a new science about the human soul, having as foundations the unconscious and the drives. Similarly, Schopenhauer had, one hundred years before, in the transition from the XVIIIth to the XIXth century, put in doubt not only the attempts at metaphysically interpreting the world optimistically, but also the notions of the German romantic idealists who, as a rule, in following the tradition, postulated an absolute rational principle of the world. Schopenhauer, in his philosophy, elaborates his thinking by situating the essence of man not in conscience and reason, but in the Will, which he considered to be an irrational impulse. We will depart from the notion of the tragic among the Ancient Greeks, crossing the path of modern philosophy, and finally arriving at psychoanalysis

The purpose of the present study is to introduce and justify the hypothesis that the notion of Will in Shopenhauer s philosophy is better understood when considered as a hermeneutics of Representation. It is defended that the dialogue with the theoretical part of Kant s philosophy, as well as its distinction, operated by Schopenhauer as objective and subjective being and subjective and objective consideration are fundamental issues while constructing Schopenhauer s single thought. By analyzing the relationship between the philosophy and wisdom of Schopenhauer s thought, through the notion of transition (Übergang) and through what we call reverse intelligibility thesis on Metaphysics of Nature and on the process of the objectification of the Will in the world, we intend to interpret Schopenhauer s philosophy as the philosophy of limit. This way, we would make possible the articulation of both the relationship between Will and Representation, and the philosophy with what could be named as wisdom

Abstract:
In the following thesis I outline Schopenhauer’s ethics in its metaphysical context and in contrast to ethics based on egoism. I look at criticisms of Schopenhauer’s philosophy which have emerged quite recently, and some of which (if valid) would undermine Schopenhauer’s compassion-based moral theory. I have explained these criticisms and offered a defence of Schopenhauer. In order to take up Schopenhauer’s claim of affinity with Buddhist philosophy, I outline first of all early Buddhist then Mahāyāna ethics focusing on the latter’s central idea of compassion. It has been suggested by some scholars that there are specific problems in Buddhist ethics which undermine the idea of compassion and I explain, then attempt to counter, these claims with specific reference to Śāntideva and his rejection of egoism as a means of acting in a moral way or of finding liberation from suffering. I then address recent criticisms of Śāntideva’s Bodhicaryāvatāra, especially the idea that the specific role of compassion in his ethics and its soteriological role are illogical – an idea which I argue against. Finally I compare the core ideas of Schopenhauer’s solution to the problem of suffering with what seems similar in Śāntideva. In doing this, I examine whether or not Schopenhauer is right in claiming convergence between Buddhism and his own philosophy, especially in the area of soteriology as it relates to ethics.

Abstract:
This is an inquiry into the background and the origins of bias and disinformation as viewed from the philosophical perspective. This paper demonstrates the undeniable analogy between the philosophical framework defined by Schopenhauer and the informational model of decision situations as viewed today in operations research, management sciences, and decision sciences. Bias, and disinformation—the main concerns of informing science are not aberrations or deviations— are the very nature of all communications among living entities. Within the realm of informing science, research that ignores this fact may produce unreliable results. One must face this reality head on. The inquiry contributes to the theoretical foundations of informing science. The results are presented for challenge, critique, and discussion.
