Totanes, Vernon R. "Money and leadership: A study of theses on public school libraries submitted to the University of the Philippines - Institute of Library and Information Science." School of Communication & Information, Nanyang Technological University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/105650.

Abstract:
The biggest challenge facing public school librarians in the Philippines today is the thought that there is no money to pay for the improvements that need to be made. This mindset is reflected in the findings, conclusions or recommendations made by graduate and undergraduate students who focused on public school libraries in theses submitted from 1940 onward at the University of the Philippines (UP): the government should allot a regular budget for public school libraries. After all of these years, it is time perhaps to accept that the government does not consider public school libraries a priority in the allocation of scarce resources. But why is it that despite government ne-glect, some public school libraries have flourished, while most have remained the same? Could it be that there are other factors that need to be considered aside from money? As seen in the case of the two most developed public secondary school libraries in the Third Dis-trict of Quezon City, leadership is also very important. After all, two individuals given similar amounts of money will not necessarily achieve similar goals. The word â leadership,â however, appears in only one of the abstracts of 19 theses on public school libraries submitted from 1940-2005. This lone thesis is the basis for this paper.

Castronovo, Calogero. "Die Leseförderung in Spanien." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät I, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/15988.

Full text
Abstract:
At the beginning of the 21st century the Spanish government launched the most important reading promotion campaign in the history of the country. The objective campaign, that still continues, is to correct the important deficiencies of the reading habits of the Spaniards and to guarantee the access to the information and knowledge society for every citizen. In the first part of the thesis, the author describes the historical reasons for the present reading deficiencies in the population. He also analyzes the most important studies about the reading habits in Spain. An investigation about the situation of the publishing world and its effects on the reading culture, and an account oft the law on Books, Reading and Libraries from 2007 helped to create the context in which the new efforts to improve the reading competence are taking place. In the second part of the work the author analyzes the most representative projects of reading promotion, that have been started from the central, but also from regional and municipal administrations, as well as from private initiators. The most important among these projects is the National Reading Promotion Plan. It was developed from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and has the function of an integration and reference point for all the local reading promotion actions in the country. The public presentation of this Plan in 2001 represented the beginning of a deep transformation process of the reading culture of the nation. As the libraries have always been indispensable centres for reading promotion, the last part of the thesis describes the development of the Spanish librarian system in the three last decades focusing special interest on the school and public libraries. The purpose of this research was to investigate the use of Web 2.0 technologies by Library and Information Science (LIS) students at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). This research provided answers to the following questions: • Which Web 2.0 technologies are used mostly by LIS students? • What do LIS students use Web 2.0 technologies for? • How is the LIS curriculum crafted to include training on Web 2.0 technologies? • What benefits (gratifications) do LIS students derive from the use of Web 2.0 technologies? • Which Web 2.0 technologies are LIS students being taught? Blumer and Katz’s (1974) Uses and Gratification Theory which explains the reasons behind people’s use of Web 2.0 technologies was used to provide meaning to the research findings. A mixed methods case approach was used in this study and as a result, a questionnaire, content analysis and interviews were used to collect data. Findings of this study revealed that, between 72% and 97% of the LIS students do have accounts on the following Web 2.0 technologies: YouTube, Skype, Google Apps, WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook. It has been highlighted in this research that LIS students use Web 2.0 technologies for both academic and general purposes. Over 80% of the LIS students use Web 2.0 technologies for entertainment, keeping up-to-date, and meeting people as well as for communication with peers and lecturers. Analysis of the LIS Department’s curriculum documents, assignments as well as key informant interviews revealed that, while a module entitled "Web 2.0" does not exist, elements of Web 2.0 technologies are embedded in some of the LIS modules. The research results also showed that, between 89.4% and 96.5% of the LIS students either agreed or strongly agreed that Web 2.0 technologies plays a significant role in improving technology proficiency, extending learning beyond the classroom, providing a platform for entertainment, facilitating collaborative learning, improving knowledge sharing and collaboration, providing cheaper and efficient communication platforms, providing easier and faster access to information; and that a low level of complexity is needed to use Web 2.0 technologies (ease of use). Ninety five per cent of the LIS students indicated that they support the inclusion of Web 2.0 technologies in the LIS curriculum a sentiment also shared by five of the interviewed key informants. Based on the research findings the researcher has recommended that the LIS curriculum should be regularly renewed to address new trends and technologies.

Lewis, Elizabeth Faith. "Peter Guthrie Tait : new insights into aspects of his life and work : and associated topics in the history of mathematics." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6330.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I present new insights into aspects of Peter Guthrie Tait's life and work, derived principally from largely-unexplored primary source material: Tait's scrapbook, the Tait–Maxwell school-book and Tait's pocket notebook. By way of associated historical insights, I also come to discuss the innovative and far-reaching mathematics of the elusive Frenchman, C.-V. Mourey. P. G. Tait (1831–1901) F.R.S.E., Professor of Mathematics at the Queen's College, Belfast (1854–1860) and of Natural Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh (1860–1901), was one of the leading physicists and mathematicians in Europe in the nineteenth century. His expertise encompassed the breadth of physical science and mathematics. However, since the nineteenth century he has been unfortunately overlooked—overshadowed, perhaps, by the brilliance of his personal friends, James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879), Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805–1865) and William Thomson (1824–1907), later Lord Kelvin. Here I present the results of extensive research into the Tait family history. I explore the spiritual aspect of Tait's life in connection with The Unseen Universe (1875) which Tait co-authored with Balfour Stewart (1828–1887). I also reveal Tait's surprising involvement in statistics and give an account of his introduction to complex numbers, as a schoolboy at the Edinburgh Academy. A highlight of the thesis is a re-evaluation of C.-V. Mourey's 1828 work, La Vraie Théorie des quantités négatives et des quantités prétendues imaginaires, which I consider from the perspective of algebraic reform. The thesis also contains: (i) a transcription of an unpublished paper by Hamilton on the fundamental theorem of algebra which was inspired by Mourey and (ii) new biographical information on Mourey.

The main service targets of a medical school library are the teaching staff and the students of the school. Moreover, the service goal of the library is to support the three major information needs of teaching, research and medical services. Along with the rise of the Internet, most of the medical school teachers and students obtain information mainly from Internet resources. However, all medical information must be accessible, authoritative, reliable, accurate and up-to-date. Hence, the construction of a medical school library website and the integration of resources and services are vitally important. In the research, the main focus was the investigation on the usability of Yang Ming University Library website. After the missions of the usability testing were produced by log analysis, the actual usability testing was conducted along with the think-aloud protocol. The subjects were asked to fill-in the System Usability Scale when the usability testing was completed. As qualitative and quantitative data were obtained using various usability evaluation methods, they were analyzed to understand the usage status and the usability issues of Yang Ming University Library website. Specific improvement suggestions were proposed in the end. The research results indicated that, the overall satisfaction the subjects had toward Yang Ming University Library website was around 60%. The 12 services often used by the subjects included: Service Number, User’s Guide, Library Catalog, Thesis, Audio-visual materials, Monthly New Arrivals, E-book Search, E-journal, University System of Taiwan, Interlibrary Loan, Service Setup Guide and List of Password. The usability issues of Yang Ming University Library website found were: 1. The labeling were difficult to understand; 2. The categories were difficult to differentiate; 3. The page layout was not organized in accordance with the priority order; 4. The font size was too small and the color contrast was not obvious; 5. The labeling were too colorful; 6. The website links were repeated many times and lacked links to essential contents. Based on the research result, five suggestions were proposed: 1. The construction of the website should be designed and planned in concert with the university curriculum; 2. The consistency of the page layout, label names and font design should be enhanced; 3. An internal search engine of the library content should be added; 4. The importance of library user education should be promoted; 5. The usability evaluation of the website should be carried on.

Accompanying the introduction of the era of a lifelong learning society is the development and diversification of university programs. As a consequence, the universities play an important role in adult education. Since the 1997 academic year, universities have transformed their evening programs into continuing and extension education programs. The purpose of these continuing and extension education programs is to provide more education opportunities for adults. This transforming process proved to be a landmark for adult education in Taiwan. The students who study in continuing and extension education programs tend to have some non-traditional university students'' characteristics. Their class schedules and learning characteristics are different from those who study in traditional academic programs. There are also some variances in individual factors, such as ages, marital status and occupations. The motive of this study is to find out whether these differences in characteristics result in different type of behaviors for these non-traditional students in their utilization of library resources. This study uses literature analysis to explore the characteristics and behaviors of non-traditional students, including adult students, part-time students, students who study in open universities and student in continuing and extension education programs, in utilizing library resources. It also analyzes the questionnaire responses from students in the Continuing and Extension Education School of Fu Jen Catholic University (Fu Jen) concerning their behavior in utilization of library resources. We hope this study can provide some suggestions to the libraries in Taiwan and Fu Jen Catholic University which will improve their service for non-traditional students. The findings of this study are discussed as follows: 1.Characteristics of the students of the Continuing and Extension Education School in Fu Jen in their utilization of libraries: (1)these students often go to libraries in Fu Jen during weekdays to seek information or other material; (2)these students tend to browse library websites, regardless of whether they are at home, at the library or at school. Most of these students have used the library websites of Fu Jen Catholic University. Their age will affect their opinions on the content of the websites; (3)these students have concerns about the safety of libraries at night. They also feel library hours are not convenient for them because some libraries are not open during the weekends and holidays. 2. Distance between home and libraries as well as library hours influence the timing and type of libraries non-traditional students utilized . They go to the libraries on campus and public libraries which are near home during the daytime, the evening they do not have classes, or weekends. 3.Employment status of non-traditional students does influence the type of libraries they choose, the timing they go to the libraries, and their opinions about library hours, service at the evening or on weekends. However, the employment status does not change their purpose of using libraries. 4.Age factor influences the behavior of using electronic resources for nontraditional students. Older non-traditional students seem to have more difficulty in using electronic resources than younger ones. Based on this study, we will make recommendations to the libraries in Taiwan, Fu Jen Catholic University and non-traditional students and hope the libraries can provide better services for these non-traditional students.

Golfo-Barcelona, Mary Grace. "Towards a master’s program in archival studies at the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), University of the Philippines." 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/32220.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The archival community worldwide faces challenges posed by the advent of digital communication, shifting understandings of archives prompted by a new emphasis on the power of means of communication and archives to shape knowledge, and fundamental debates that have followed over how archives should be run. Archivists from different parts of the world have started to revamp archival concepts, learn new skills, and acquire the specialized knowledge through graduate level education (master’s and doctoral degrees) necessary to address these challenges. Such specialized university degree programs in archival studies are fairly new phenomena. Professional education for archivists was initially offered in many countries by archives themselves to their new staff members and through conferences held by archival associations. Some then followed with one-year graduate diploma programs that eventually developed into a full master’s degree. In Canada, the Association of Canadian Archivists first established guidelines for master’s degree programs for educating archivists in 1976. The first master’s program in Archival Studies offered in North America was launched in 1981 by the University of British Columbia. In the United States, the first guidelines for the development of a graduate program in Archival Studies came out in 1993. In Asia, by the late 1950s courses in archives were offered in several countries such as Vietnam, Taiwan, and the Philippines, but not as a specialized degree program. In the Philippines, archival courses are only being offered as elective courses within library and information studies programs. There is, thus, a major gap in the programs of archival education in the Philippines. Certain factors that are unique to the Philippine archival profession further increase the existing common challenges facing archivists across the world and heighten the need for a specialized master’s degree in Archival Studies. These factors include: inadequate access to records or archives that document the country’s rich cultural and historical heritage, which makes research on the richness of Philippine history and culture difficult; the natural environment of the Philippines that makes it disaster prone requires special education in the care and management of the archives; and the relative youth of the archival profession in the country and thus limited number of properly educated professional archivists. This thesis discusses these challenges and how they can be addressed through a graduate program in Archival Studies. Lastly, the thesis offers a rationale and proposal for a master’s program in Archival Studies at the School of Library and Information Studies, University of the Philippines.

Collage library represents a unit of service, and is also a source of knowledge. It provides an individual space for all students and faculties to gain knowledge. Taking the tourism-related students from the Ming Chuan University (The MCU represents a comprehensive university) and the Kinmen Institute of Technology (The KMIT stands for a technical collage) for Examples, this study tries to understand the demands of library services and the behavior of information seeking between two groups from the aspects of courses’ requirements, gender, and educational background. Moreover, the analysis results serve as an improvement guideline for libraries to tailor its services to the user needs, and enhance the library functions in the digital era. This research chose tourism-related students from the MCU and the KIT as studying groups, and 381 effective questionnaires were collected. The SPSS, statistical software, was then utilized to do the next analysis. Finally, the conclusion was made as follows: 1. Understanding the use of libraries by the two groups of students from the MCU and the KMIT respectively. 2. Analyzing the differences of library using between the above two groups from the perspective of collage location (The MTU is located on Taiwan island, and the KMIT is on Kinmen island). 3. Understanding the demands of collage libraries for tourism-related students. Students from the MCU and the KIMT express specific demands and describe different services that need to be improved because of their educational backgrounds and school systems. In addition, the research analyzes the factor of gender to understand the demands of libraries, the purposes of libraries using, the wishing list of purchases, and the activities in order to increase the attending percentage. All of them vary by the viewpoints and fondness of male and female.

Abstract:
During the 21st century, electronic resources have become an important component in every sector of society and the academic sector is no exception. Academic libraries worldwide have adopted the technologies involved in electronic resources, with some replacing their traditional collections with e-resources, which are more accessible by users. This study was conducted at the University of South Africa (Unisa) and was aimed at investigating the levels of awareness and usage of e-resources by third-year students in the School of Arts. The study used the descriptive survey study design, which is quantitative in approach. The target population comprised of 5 377 third-year students enrolled in the seven departments in the School of Arts and a proportional sample of 360 students was drawn from the population by using stratified random sampling. Library staff was also included in the study, in order to determine students’ usage patterns of e-resources and to establish initiatives available at the Unisa Library to increase awareness and use of e-resources. Online questionnaires distributed via Survey Monkey were used as the data collection instrument. The study established that the Unisa Library subscribes to a wide range of e-resources and has a number of initiatives in place to encourage the awareness and usage of these resources. However, 50, 3% of the student respondents were unaware of the availability of Unisa e-resources. The study also established that the majority of students use e-resources for study and research and that, although they have basic information and communication technologies (ICTs) skills, the majority of students lack advanced information search and retrieval skills, which are required to utilise e-resources properly. The four main barriers that prevent students from accessing and using e-resources were the cost of access to the internet, unavailability of relevant literature for studies, lack of time to do online searches and preference for information freely available on the internet. To encourage increased awareness and use of e-resources, the study recommend the development of an e-resources marketing strategy, the introduction of an information literacy module for all first-year students, the provision of infrastructure and technologies for access, development of specialised library assistance services, balancing of the electronic library collections across different subjects, tutors including more e-resources references in study guides and tutorial letters and hiring of more library staff. The study concludes that the Unisa Library has a wide variety of electronic library resources and services needed in academic institutions, but awareness and usage of the resources is quite low, due to several factors highlighted in the study. Therefore, the Library should step forward and ensure that the resources are fully utilised by following the recommendations suggested in the study.

Moore, Penelope Anne. "The cognitive and metacognitive demands of library research as experienced by Form one students : a thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education at Massey University." 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1519.

Abstract:
In recent years educators have become increasingly aware of the necessity to support the development of higher order thinking abilities in all students. It has been suggested that, in this regard, special attention should be given to those aspects of the curriculum "which are inherently enabling of further learning" (Resnick, 1987, p44). Library research skills tuition is one such area but traditional modes of teaching these have frequently overlooked the cognitive and metacognitive demands of tasks requiring information retrieval and use. The extent of these demands as they affect students undertaking project assignments independently was largely unknown and prompted the following study. To access the levels of knowledge and thinking processes used by students, think aloud/concurrent interviews were conducted individually while 23 Form 1 students (mean age 11 years 8 months) attempted to gather information for a project. These interviews were videotaped and then replayed to students to provide memory cueing for retrospective interviews. Students were found to have wide ranging metacognitive knowledge, the accuracy of which influenced their performance on the information retrieval task. However, the knowledge they made public concerning the learning task and the criteria by which their learning would be assessed was very limited. Few students voiced recognition that the criteria for evaluation would have implications for the way in which they approached the learning task itself. In contrast, they voiced considerable awareness concerning the expected features of the materials they must use, qualities of their own learning abilities and processes, and interactions between these. However, Form 1 students often lacked an accurate understanding of the relationships within the library system and between access structures in individual books. Overall they had insufficient general and tactical knowledge to facilitate the use of alternative action paths when a favoured approach failed. However, both able and less able students were found to engage in some form of executive control processing. Two case studies are presented which illustrate differences in the quality of students' executive control processes. In particular, students varied in the degree to which monitoring events triggered associated planning and regulation/revision episodes. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for providing a learning environment that supports the development of higher order thinking and increased information retrieval success.

Sousa, Sandra Cristina Santos. "Consistência na indexação em Bibliotecas Universitárias de Enfermagem-Saúde em Portugal." Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/13209.

Abstract:
In areas such as health, the number of scientific publications is increasing due to the exponential advancement of science. These publications have the role of disseminating knowledge, which has an essential role in higher education institutions, such as nursing schools, both as research and investigations centres, and as responsible for the updated and multidisciplinary way health professionals are able to demonstrate an informed and validated practice. That’s where indexing has its fundamental role, justifying from knowing better the contribution of university libraries in access to information and documentation. For this purpose, this study aims to measure the consistency of indexing in libraries of nursing/ public health schools existing in Portugal. It was set to sample all nursing/public health schools (N = 21), which were examined in two different times. To proceed to the study of the indexing process an investigation was used. For the measurement of the consistency of indexing, we use the selection in their document databases and a document book of regular publication in the whole sample, comparing the terms used by different university libraries for the indexing of the same document. The results obtained with regard to indexing consistency were of 21.1% for periodic publication and 18.9% for the book, which in its totality makes a consistency of 20.9% allocated to libraries, a value we consider low, but that goes against the studies analyzed by Zunde and Dexter (1969) which highlight values between 10% to 80%, depending on these parameters on which indexing is performed and the consistency measure is used. With regard to the study of the indexing process, all hypotheses were rejected, so we can see that our dependent variable -consistency of indexing - does not change with factors such as training, document type, years of experience as an indexer, which opens other research paths, in order to find appropriate procedures for the increased consistency checked in this study.

Abstract:
This was the first comprehensive doctoral dissertation on the George Bush Presidential Library Center at Texas A&M University. The Bush Presidential Library and Museum was the focal point. The purpose was to describe the global significance, work and educational contributions of the Bush Presidential Library while exploring its partnership with Texas A&M University. The primary data sources were: archival records, museum exhibits, interviews and my field work experiences. Beyond being a descriptive dissertation, this study offered unique hypotheses and conclusions. It examined the higher educational aspects of the Bush Presidential Library Center's operating context within Texas A&M University. These included the educational value of George Bush's career, the Bush Presidential Library's contents, and its benefits and technology use in educational programming. This study answered two unique hypotheses: how President Bush's liberation of Kuwait increased the Middle Eastern funding of presidential libraries and the Corps of Cadets' influence on President Bush's selection of Texas A&M University. George Bush's global presidency, distinguished international public service career and his world-changing, historical presidential achievements gave the Bush Presidential Library and Museum an extraordinary educational value. The data showed the educational value of, benefits of and technology's role in educational programming at the Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The global changes mirrored President Bush's career and his effort to combat terrorism. China's emergence as a world power was attributed to President Bush's career. The Bush Presidential Library and Museum is the core asset of the center. The data showed President Bush's liberation of Kuwait directly influenced the funding of his presidential library and the subsequent ones. The data showed the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets' influence on President Bush's selection of Texas A&M University as the site for his presidential library. Texas A&M University is the best place for the George Bush Presidential Library Center. A university environment is the best place to host a presidential library.

Cuthbert, Nancy Marie. "George Tsutakawa's fountain sculptures of the 1960s: fluidity and balance in postwar public art." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/4142.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1960 and 1992, American artist George Tsutakawa (1910 – 1997) created more than sixty fountain sculptures for publicly accessible sites in the U.S., Canada, and Japan. The vast majority were made by shaping sheet bronze into geometric and organically inspired abstract forms, often arranged around a vertical axis. Though postwar modernist artistic production and the issues it raises have been widely interrogated since the 1970s, and public art has been a major area of study since about 1980, Tsutakawa's fountains present a major intervention in North America's urban fabric that is not well-documented and remains almost completely untheorized. In addition to playing a key role in Seattle's development as an internationally recognized leader in public art, my dissertation argues that these works provide early evidence of a linked concern with nature and spirituality that has come to be understood as characteristic of the Pacific Northwest. Tsutakawa was born in Seattle, but raised and educated primarily in Japan prior to training as an artist at the University of Washington, then teaching in UW's Schools of Art and Architecture. His complicated personal history, which in World War II included being drafted into the U.S. army, while family members were interned and their property confiscated, led art historian Gervais Reed to declare that Tsutakawa was aligned with neither Japan nor America – that he and his art existed somewhere in-between. There is much truth in Reed's statement; however, artistically, such dualistic assessments deny the rich interplay of cultural allusions in Tsutakawa's fountains. Major inspirations included the Cubist sculpture of Alexander Archipenko, Himalayan stone cairns, Japanese heraldic emblems, First Nations carvings, and Bauhaus theory. Focusing on the early commissions, completed during the 1960s, my study examines the artist's debts to intercultural networks of artistic exchange – between North America, Asia, and Europe – operative in the early and mid-twentieth century, and in some cases before. I argue that, with his fountain sculptures, this Japanese American artist sought to integrate and balance such binaries as nature/culture, intuition/reason, and spiritual/material, which have long served to support the construction of East and West as opposed conceptual categories.
