Abstract:
In stressing the need to embrace the use of technology in American Schools, Doyle states that educators “can't afford not to use technology” [1]; he goes on to say that the effective use of technology “will transform not just what a school accomplishes, but how it does so.” Despite being the focus of a great deal of attention, such visions are slow to materialize. So how can a school go about achieving an emphasis on technology? One strategy is for the school principals to lead by example. The use of microcomputers for student information management provides such an opportunity. After reviewing the process for selecting the most appropriate software, this article presents the experiences of the first ten Edmonton Public high schools to implement microcomputer based student information management.

Abstract:
In addition to other mitigation measures, face masks have been used in schools worldwide as a precondition for allowing school attendance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The quality and habits of mask wearing have, however, not been evaluated thus far, leaving uncertainty about the efficacy of this measure. It was the aim of this study to assess the accuracy of face mask wearing by children and adolescents in different school situations. In May and June 2022, students of two selected Austrian schools were asked to provide information about the different variations in wearing a face mask in different situations at school (in classrooms with or without the presence of a teacher, and in school buildings outside classrooms without the presence of a teacher). Strongly divergent results were identified for the amount of time in which face masks were worn correctly in the three different situations (p < 0.001, eta = 0.29). In the presence of a teacher, masks were worn correctly 63.7% of the time, while this percentage decreased to 31.9% when no teacher was present (p < 0.001). These results suggest the limited efficacy of mandatory face masks in schools. Should this measure become necessary again in the future due to the pandemic situation and highly pathogenic variants, special efforts are necessary in order to improve the quality of face mask wearing by school children.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess school nurses’ perceptions of barriers to optimal management of seizures in schools. Eighty-three school nurses completed an electronic survey. Most agreed they felt confident they could identify a seizure (97.6%), give rectal diazepam (83.8%), and handle cluster seizures (67.1%), but fewer were confident they could give intranasal midazolam (63.3%), had specific information about a student’s seizures (56.6%), or could swipe a vagus nerve stimulator magnet (47.4%). Nurses were more likely to be available at the time of a seizure in rural (17/20) (85%) versus suburban (21/34) (62%) or urban (8/25) (32%) schools ( P = .001). School nurses are comfortable managing seizures in the school setting. However, a specific seizure plan for each child and education on intranasal midazolam and vagus nerve stimulator magnet use are needed. A barrier in urban schools is decreased availability of a nurse to identify seizures and administer treatment.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to investigate records management in selected government schools in South Africa. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted a qualitative research approach to collect in-depth data from the principals or administrators working as records managers at the school level. In all, a sample of principals and administrators from seven schools were interviewed face-to-face to enable the researcher to visit the schools in person. Findings The findings indicate that although the principals or administrators make concerted efforts to manage school records, there is no uniform system in place for this purpose. This results in haphazard record keeping and records management at the schools. The study recommends that the Department of Basic Education in Limpopo develop a file plan or model for schools to use to manage records uniformly in a standardised manner that would support accountability, transparency and good governance. Research limitations/implications The study was limited to seven primary schools in Lebopo Circuit, Limpopo province and secondary schools were excluded. Practical implications The author obtained a thorough understanding and direct insight into how principals or administrators manage school records. This study makes recommendations for the effective management of records in government schools. Originality/value This is one of the few research papers on records management in government schools in South Africa.

Abstract:
Globally, large-scale national initiatives are being implemented towards promoting the level and quality of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) use in school education. However, despite these efforts, the current level of ICT uptake from schools remains low. A wide range of factors have been identified as barriers, including lack of teachers' ICT Competences and lack of ICT infrastructure. Typically, these barriers are tackled separately without taking into consideration the ecosystemic nature of schools as organizations. This paper introduces a holistic approach on School ICT Competence based on combining both individual teachers' ICT Competences and schools' eMaturity. Furthermore, it presents the design of a web-based School ICT Competence Management System which aims to capture and monitor schools' overall level of ICT uptake and facilitate effective management of resources and strategic planning towards improvement, by jointly processing these data.

Abstract:
Education quality questions become urgent for all educational institutions regardless of their type, the kind, size of provided services and so on. Thus, it is natural, that quality questions become more urgent for comprehensive schools as well. In the latter years, quite a lot of attention has been devoted to comprehensive school internal audit thematic. We can state, that internal audit is only a tiny sphere of quality management. Such type of examining of institution activity (internal state) in any case is only partial, insufficiently objective and so on. However, internal audit (IA) carried out in an appropriate way, without doubt, helps to improve school’s activity, if educational institution is interested in this itself. The results obtained during the research revealed that schools before presenting internal audit data on their website, both during the processing the received results and later on face difficulties. Also, there is, obviously, lack of concrete directions on how this process has to be carried out. It is obvious, that internal audit methodics are being applied not effectively, it is not clear what information presentation form has to be and what information should be announced in public. The research showed that the presented information content is not exhaustive, does not reflect school assessment process, schools tend not to show on their website at what level they evaluated their activity, usually only the weakest, the strongest and improvement requiring school activity sides are pointed out. This article presents research results which reveal comprehensive school internal audit information content aspects. Activity sphere evaluation based on concrete evaluation indicators: on average, both in the old IA methodics and in the updated IA methodics, activity spheres are evaluated 2.5, i.e, as an intermediate variant between 2nd and 3rd evaluation level: there are more strong features than shortcomings, however, the activity is adequate, but has to be improved. The highest quality having assessed school activity sphere in the old IA methodics – learning achievements – is evaluated at level 3, in the updated methodics – educability and learning and student support. Both in the old and in the updated IA methodics these activity spheres are evaluated equally (2,6) – school management, learning and education, student support, resources; (2,8) – school culture, achievements, ethos. The evaluation of advantages, disadvantages and activity spheres that need improvement: In both IA metodics the most frequently assessed activity sphere is related with the applicability of the education content to the learner. These spheres were the least evaluated: in the old IA methodics the fifth sphere – ethos, in the updated IA methodics – also the fifth activity sphere, however, it is related with the strategic management of the school. Gymnasiums, comparing the results of both IA methodics analyses, tend not to evaluate activity spheres, pointing out advantages, disadvantages and activity aspects requiring improvement in the way basic, secondary and special schools do. The old IA methodics was applied more in secondary schools; the updated IA is most frequently applied in basic and secondary schools. Key words: internal audit, methodics, comprehensive school, information.

Abstract:
The cross-sectional research design was used to investigate differences in teachers’ perception of school climate in schools with poor, average and good school’s learning environment, and to explore to what degree is possible to explain six school climate dimensions by school’s learning environment, some teacher’s characteristics and teaching practice experience. Participants in the study were 785 teachers from 44 primary schools in northern part of Croatia, 121 males and 579 females. Participants rated school climate in school where they teach and in addition provided information about various school’s learning environment. Schools which teachers perceived as having good school’s learning environment clearly differ in the level of school climate quality - school climate is significantly better in schools with better school’s learning environment. The performed hierarchical regression analyses, demonstrated in addition, how school’s learning environment and characteristics of teachers and teaching practice (e.g. gender, age, work experience and education level) are powerful predictors of (positive) school climate. In this paper, we provide possible explanation and stress importance on school climate as an essential concept in school effectiveness concerns and activities.

Background: School nurses play an important role in coping with food allergy (FA) in schoolchildren, but in schools with no school nurse, the school personnel should be prepared to manage health emergencies. This study aimed to evaluate allergy management competences in primary schools in Cyprus. Methods: The study was conducted September 2016 to May 2017 in 11/13 primary schools, selected by stratified random sampling. Information was collected from a principal/designated teacher using a questionnaire from the EuroPrevall Project, adapted for Cypriot teachers. Results: An average of six children with FA per school was reported in the preceding three years. Protocols for the management of chronic diseases, including allergies, were in place in 8/11 schools. Regarding recognition of FA, 8/11 respondents knew some of the signs and symptoms. In an allergic emergency, 9/11 would call the child’s parent/caregiver first and 2/11 emergency medical support. Epinephrine auto-injector (EIA) was reported by 2/11 respondents to be available in the school, but only one reported training in its use. Conclusions: The preparedness of primary schools in Cyprus did not meet safety standards regarding the preparedness of school personnel to cope with an allergic reaction in children with FA, including the use of EIA.

This study was set to determine the strategies of enhancing ICT use in the delivery of services in public secondary schools in Siaya County, Kenya. Although many secondary schools introduced computers in great numbers starting early 1990s, there are limited information on their use to facilitate delivery of services in school administration and management. The extent to which ICT is being used in school management in secondary schools, the types of administrative uses of ICT by school managers and challenges affecting the integration of ICT in the management systems in secondary schools needed to be adequately addressed. This can only be achieved if there are laid down strategies of enhancing ICT use in the delivery of services in public secondary schools in Siaya County. The study was guided by Social Transformation Theory in Education and Visscher (1992) conceptual model of school information system, which were used to show the relationship between variables. The research design that used was descriptive survey. Questionnaires, Interviews and document analysis were used to collect data. The study established that schools were taking several steps to help in enhancing ICT delivery such as looking for grants from the government, prioritizing purchase of ICT equipment and using parents’ involvement to buy computers. The study recommends that effort should be made by the government to post and provide teachers skilled in ICT to each school to impart ICT skills to school managers. The study concludes that more support need to be given to schools to enable them achieve their dream of fully implementing the usage of ICT in the management of school activities.

Abstract:
School-based management is a new method of managing school resources more effectively, which gives the principal greater authority in taking all participatory actions directly against all components of the school community. As such, this study seeks to ascertain the function of school-based administration in determining the efficacy of education implementation in schools. The data collection technique for this study is qualitative, utilizing descriptive methods and a literature review. The study's findings indicate that implementing school-based management is critical to the success of educational performance in schools, since the principal is given increased power and authority to manage all available resources in the school. Besides that, school-based management also involves the community through the school committee in every policymaking. It is hoped that every policy taken can be more targeted, which has implications for school progress. In this study, the authors also found that SBM monitoring and evaluation is needed to obtain the correct information to be used for appropriate decision making.

Abstract:
Managing diabetes is complicated for many children. It often requires support from an adult during the school day. In Denmark, most children spend 30–35 h a week at school. Nevertheless, diabetes management in schools remains largely uninvestigated. This study aimed to examine the characteristics and organization of diabetes management in Danish primary schools from the personnel’s perspective. All primary schools in Denmark were invited to participate in the study (n = 2129), and 525 schools were included. A questionnaire was constructed and sent by email. Questionnaire data are presented in the descriptive statistics and compared with the ISPAD guidelines. According to 77.2% of respondents, school personnel had received training in diabetes management, and 78.5% of the schools had at least one person available for diabetes support every day. Respondents felt prepared to help the students with counting carbohydrates (38.9%), dosing insulin (39.1%), and helping the students during high (52.1%) or low (60.3%) blood sugar levels, insulin chock (35.2%), or during activities (36.3%). Yet, diabetes management was a challenging task. Only 61.7% had an action plan for diabetes management, 37.4% had face-to-face information meetings with the parents, and 55.1% of respondents reported having sufficient time to cooperate with the parents.
