Ong, Poh Kwee 1961. "Sustaining Singapore marine industry's premier position : a strategic review." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/9196.

Since the late 60's, Singapore Marine Industry went through a healthy period of growth and earned itself the reputation of world's No.1 ships repair center. However, from the late 80's onward Singapore Marine Industry's leadership position has been threatened due to both internal and external factors such as the costs escalation, strengthening of Singapore dollar against most of the major currencies, shortage of skilled workers and new repair facilities established in the low cost countries. The thesis analyzes both the international operating environment and the internal industry structure to obtain a clear view of the Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing Singapore Marine Industry. In response to the challenges ahead, the thesis examines the strategies that Singapore has to adopt to strengthen its core competencies in order to widen the gap with its competition. The thesis would further explore the strategies of spreading the operations beyond just Singapore. Suitable location along the main shipping routes should be identified and developed. This strategy will allow the Singapore yard to offer services to its customers with wider geographical coverage. The analysis reveals the importance of forming strategic alliances with the customers and the key suppliers in order to extract more values out of the integrated value-chains. The analysis suggests that, to retain its leadership position, Singapore Marine Industry must move away from offering the traditional "Total Customer Solution" to its customer. The Singapore Marine Industry should further strengthens its one-stop maritime centre concept and the geographical advantage in order to move itself towards the "system lock-in" position.

Wong, Ann Chai 1967. "Creating wealth in post currency crisis Asia : opportunities for financial services in Singapore." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/9190.

The Asian currency crisis revealed the structural weaknesses of the banking systems in Asia, following the devaluation of Thai Baht on 2 July 1997. With freedom of movement of capital, economies in Thailand, Indonesia and Korea were affected adversely by the liquidity squeeze when capital flowed out. Banks had to raise interest rates and nonperforming loans (NPLs) mounted, leading to severe stresses on banking systems. Post crisis, there were signs of limited recovery of the region in sight, but the region-wide reforms would take some time to complete. In the interim, Singapore could use the crisis to position the entire financial sector has to better respond to future challenges. The thesis would analyse the causes of the crisis as starting point to derive the directions the financial sector should take. Preserving the stability of the banking sector whilst engendering a more efficient use of capital remains a central issue in this thesis. The crisis has shown that an over-reliance on the debt capital model could lead to a systemic weakness in the economy, and this motivated the need to develop the financial market to ensure diversification. The thesis then evaluates the liberalisation measures adopted by the regulatory body (Monetary Authority of Singapore) in its bid to enhance the financial sector, and identifies some of the main opportunities and challenges ahead. Beyond leveraging on Singapore's time-tested regulatory, accounting and legal systems, financial institutions will need to take into account the impact of technology and financial innovation. Globalisation, electronic and online trading are potentially going to disrupt the traditional models of banking and exchanges. Consequently, both the banking and financial market industries need to respond to this new challenge, and the traditional advantages of geography were being eroded. To remain as a vibrant international financial market, banks and exchanges have to upgrade, creating new and more sophisticated value-added products and services through specialisation.

Yeo, Lionel 1972. "Growth strategies of small nations : with special reference to Ireland, Finland and Singapore." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/17887.

This thesis is based on the premise that small nations face unique challenges in the quest for economic prosperity. They have a small domestic economy and are more dependent than larger economies on international trade. Smallness typically entails a lack of breadth and depth in the national supply of capital, talent and knowledge. The development paths of three successful small nations - Ireland, Finland and Singapore - are analyzed to see how they overcome these unique challenges. Similarities and differences in their development strategies are examined. The typical model for assessing the microeconomic competitiveness of nations only looks within the national boundaries of an economy. In the context of a globalized world economy, it is appropriate to extend the model outside of national borders. Small nations that successfully tap on external markets, international flows of goods and services, and the global circulation of capital, talent and knowledge have bright prospects in a globalized knowledge economy.

Amgen is building a new drug substance manufacturing site in Singapore (ASM). This project identified and mitigated the risks associated with implementing analytical technologies to facilitate the design and implementation of the quality control process in the new plant. Here, a systematic risk evaluation model was established to identify sources of high risks from implementing the analytical technologies in ASM, evaluated business cases and proposed technical strategies for risk mitigation. This project also included a case study about the cross-functional initiatives at Amgen, and made recommendations regarding how to bridge the gaps between the technology development in R&D and the technology implementation in manufacturing sites.

The three essays of the thesis explore the role of organizations in professional work and the role of professionalism in organizations, by analyzing novel data from three distinct empirical cases. The first essay uses the case of retail clinics firms in the U.S. market for primary care, to investigate how firms can penetrate the barriers of exclusive professional licenses and enter markets for professional work. The second essay uses the case of tax preparation work in the U.S., to study effects of (pseudo-) professional identity on firm performance in the context of non-professional work. The third essay uses the case of pro bono accounting work, to examine the process by which moral motivation of professional work translates into efficient, but morally contradictory outcomes. Together, the essays show that professionalism is a powerful cultural and sociological concept that has effects across a wide range of organizational phenomena.

Wedding, Ramona. "The restructuring of a junior high school into a middle school in a rural setting." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185784.

Full text
Abstract:
The process of restructuring a junior high school into a middle school is the central focus of the study. The study investigated the relationship between junior high school and middle school. It emphasizes that the change process can occur successfully when approached methodically. It was hypothesized that a middle school with a grade configuration of grades 6-8 would be more effective than a junior high school with grades 7-8. The review of the literature incorporated a history of middle level education studies, a review of major reports on middle education and a review of middle level change processes. Affective and cognitive domains of education at the middle level were examined. Selected variables were analyzed to determine their effect. Subjects included students and staff members randomly selected from Safford Junior High School and Safford Middle School in Safford, Arizona. A survey was also sent to every registered voter of Graham County. Seventy-five percent of the teaching staff in the school was selected to complete the additional survey instruments describing the educational environment at the school before and after the change. Because the population was limited to the citizens and students of Graham County in Arizona, results are generalizable only to the extent that another population is similar. Further research into the relationship of these constructs, including observational studies and studies providing for external verification of both the junior high school and the middle school would be beneficial.

Hendricks, Clarence Nowellin. "Integrated leadership : a leadership approach for school management teams." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1018610.

Full text
Abstract:
School managers currently face major challenges of finding innovative ways to improve the quality of teaching and learning and ultimately student outcomes. This might be because contemporary leadership models promote either requisite curricular expertise or requisite leadership qualities or requisite norms and values which impact notably on teaching and learning. This study examined to which extent School Management Teams (SMT’s) contribute to the quality of teaching and learning when utilizing an integrated leadership approach in primary schools. The extent to which integrated leadership contributes to the quality of teaching and learning is investigated through an exploratory mixed method approach. Case studies in six different schools were conducted through both qualitative and quantitative research methods to obtain data regarding the thirty-six participants’ integrated leadership qualities. Data was gathered through focused group interviews, observations and a questionnaire. The Annual National Assessment results for two consecutive years (2010 and 2011) of grade three and six learners for literacy and numeracy were collected to determine the relationship between integrated leadership and quality teaching and learning and the extent to which integrated leadership impacted on student outcomes. The findings revealed that SMT’s confused integrated leadership with the utilization of qualities from a range of leadership styles each seeking to fit the purpose of an activity, and then claim they are employing an integrated leadership approach. Integrated leadership on the contrary is one leadership model with different qualities and when utilised as a complete package, in a unified manner, has the potential to have a significant impact on the quality of teaching and learning and ultimately student achievement. The findings also indicated that the majority of SMT members are either not utilising integrated leadership or occasionally utilise some of the integrated leadership qualities. This might be one of the main reasons for unsatisfactory academic performance in schools. Integrated leadership thus, when implemented in its totality at all times, possesses all the qualities to have a significant impact on the quality of teaching and learning nationally and internationally.

Ishizuka, Katsuhiko 1961. "The function and organization of a bank holding company in Japan." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/8508.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2002.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 77-78).
From 1999 to 2001, the Japanese financial industries were deregulated on a large scale in a move referred to as the "Japanese Big Bang". As a result, commercial banks are now allowed to establish a bank holding company and to diversify their financial services through this bank holding company. In 2000 and 2001, Japan's three major city banks each established a bank holding company with full-service securities companies as subsidiaries. In this context, this thesis examines the function and organization of bank holding companies that have subsidiaries that offer financial services, most of which have proven to be very effective, and that have maximized the total value of the group. Chapter One examines the various roles a holding company can play to create value. It considers research on corporate-level strategy and draws a parallel between the role of corporate headquarters in a diversified company and the role of the bank holding company in a diversified financial services company. Chapter Two analyzes the organization and structure of some of the world's leading bank holding companies. Chapter Three looks at the three major Japanese bank holding companies. Finally, Chapter Four compares the different approaches to creating value that have been observed in the case studies, and draws implications for value creation strategies in the Japanese bank holding companies in the future.
