Abstract:
Purpose In the era of high student fees and intense market competition, many universities now buy books for their new students, and recently have incorporated student choice into the offer, enabling students to choose how to spend funds. Teesside University has successfully piloted such an approach with one academic School, the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law. The pilot has now been extended to all academic Schools, with all students receiving £100 per academic year to spend on reading list books. The scheme covers new full-time undergraduate students at the University, and is operated in collaboration with an external company, John Smiths. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the Teesside University Advance scheme against baseline data of book borrowing and reservation patterns of reading list titles. The paper explores the impact upon the student experience and student perceptions of the Library. Design/methodology/approach The project used a mixed methods approach. The quantitative strand analysed book borrowing and reservation patterns data from library systems and from book purchasing patterns data provided by the online store supporting the scheme. Students were also surveyed about the scheme. The qualitative strand, via one-to-one interviews conducted by the student researcher, gained an insight into why students select certain titles to purchase; and what their expectations of the university library are for the supply of reading list titles. Findings Analysis revealed an overall decline in book borrowing from the library of the titles selected for purchase by students via the scheme. Student perceptions of the library were positive and demonstrated a strategic use of library resources alongside book purchases and open web resources. At early stages of university undergraduate study, students need guidance on most appropriate resources to use and why, from either reading lists or book bundles. Originality/value Teesside University scheme is unique in the UK in covering all new full-time undergraduates and letting them choose which reading list titles to buy with the university funds provided.

Abstract:
The SMK Negeri 1 Siantar School Library is one of the special libraries located at the SMK Negeri 1 Siantar School. Libraries provide various kinds of library materials such as books, lessons, lesson questions, and other vocational books. After the researcher made observations, the problem that often occurred was books that were borrowed and returned books that had a non-strategic layout, so that library visitors who did not know the placement found it difficult to find the books they wanted to borrow. This research uses data mining techniques, namely the Apriori Algorithm, the Apriori Method is a method for looking for patterns of relationships between one or more items in a dataset. The Apriori method can be used for data on borrowing books at the Siantar 1 State Vocational School School Library, where the composition of the library books (B1) X_Press UN 2019 B. Indonesia side by side with books (B4) School of Love is a Great Leader and Teacher, if the composition of the book is (B10) Moral Mulia side by side with book (B1) X_Press UN 2019 B. Indonesia, If the book arrangement (B7) X_Press Mathematics is side by side with the book (B5) Relationer, if the book arrangement (B7) X_Press Mathematics is side by side with the book (B9) Indonesian Wisdom Batak Toba, and if the arrangement of the book (B10) Morals Mulia is side by side with the book (B8) Hati Therapy, the data from these items each met the minimum confidance value of 0,5% or the same as the specified 50%. The result of this research is to help library staff arrange the book layout correctly. It is hoped that this research can provide input to the school

Abstract:
Objective – To determine the effect of large bookstores (defined as those having 20 or more employees) on household library use. Design – Econometric analysis using cross-sectional data sets. Setting – The United States of America. Subjects – People in over 55,000 households across the U.S.A. Methods – Data from 3 1996 studies were examined using logit and multinomial logit estimation procedures: the National Center for Education Statistics’ National Household Education Survey (NHES) and Public Library Survey (PLS), and the U.S. Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns (CBP). The county level results of the NHES telephone survey were merged with the county level data from the PLS and the CBP. Additionally, data on Internet use at the state level from the Statistical Abstract of the United States were incorporated into the data set. A logit regression model was used to estimate probability of library use based on several independent variables, evaluated at the mean. Main results – In general, Hemmeter found that "with regard to the impact of large bookstores on household library use, large bookstores do not appear to have an effect on overall library use among the general population” (613). While no significant changes in general library use were found among high and low income households where more large bookstores were present, nor in the population taken as a whole, middle income households (between $25,000 and $50,000 in annual income) showed notable declines in library use in these situations. These effects were strongest in the areas of borrowing (200% less likely) and recreational purposes (161%), but were also present in work-related use and job searching. Hemmeter also writes that “poorer households use the library more often for job search purposes. The probability of library use for recreation, work, and consumer information increases as income increases. This effect diminishes as households get richer” (611). Finally, home ownership was also correlated with higher library use. Households with children were more than 20% more likely to use the library (610). Their use of the library for school-related purposes, general borrowing, program activities, and so on was not affected by the presence of book superstores. White families with children were somewhat less likely to use the library, while families with higher earning and education levels were more likely to use the library. Library use also increased with the number of children in the family. Shorter distances to the nearest branch and a higher proportion of AV materials were also predictive of higher library use. Educational level was another important factor, with those having less than high school completion being significantly less likely to use the library than those with higher levels of educational attainment. Conclusions – The notable decline in public library use among middle income households where more large bookstores are present is seen as an important threat to libraries, as it may result in a decline in general support and support for funding among an important voting block. More current data are needed in this area. In addition to the type of information examined in this study, the author recommends the inclusion of information on funding, support for library referenda, and library quality as they relate to the presence of large bookstores.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The library has the role of helping students to love reading books. The availability of books in various fields motivates students to come to visit the library, students can read or borrow library books. For this reason, library officers apply the rules for visiting the library. The Apriori algorithm is a part of data mining, namely the search for high frequency patterns such as activities that often appear simultaneously. The pattern that will be analyzed is the pattern of borrowing any books that are often borrowed so that librarians know the information of books that are often borrowed. With the application of a priori algorithms, book data is processed to produce a book borrowing pattern. After all the high frequency patterns were found, then association rules were found that met the minimum requirements for associative confidence A → B minimum confidence = 25%. Rules for sequential final association based on minimum support and minimum confidence, if borrowing an IPA, then borrowing MTK Support = 15%, Confidence = 42.8%. Abstract:
The school library is a means for teachers and students to find information. The school library provides books or reading materials that can support the learning process. The focus of this research is to develop the information system contained in the school library. Many school libraries still collect data in the conventional way, such as handwritten using a ledger or using excel. The development of this school library system will use the website as a means to process data. The data that has been created will be entered into the data storage using the MySQL application as the database. This research planning uses the SDLC method with the waterfall model. The waterfall model is used because it is considered more efficient in developing school libraries. There are two entities that can use this website, namely library officers and members. Library officers can use the web to process data on book procurement, book borrowing transactions and viewing library reports. Meanwhile, members can fill in the guest book every time they visit the school library and also do book searches. Thus, the school library information system can facilitate the data processing. Book lending and borrowing transactions will also be more efficient and errors in data processing can be reduced.

Abstract:
Library is a primary supporting facility in any level of education spanning from elementary school, middle school and higher education i.e., university. The main aim of library is providing facility in which it can improve educational quality and allow the member to advance their knowledge from various reference sources. Managing book circulation is a crucial aspect for library in which it further increases effectivity for its business process such as returning and borrowing books. However, Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Negeri Surakarta does not have any such application system which can help its library management, as a result the library member cannot obtain have updated information related to the library collection. Currently, the school relies on manual procedure where the library staff records borrowing and returning books activities in a certain book log. Unfortunately, the manual procedure causes missing data and data consistency in the recording book. Therefore, research aim to design and build e-library. The e-library is a web-based information system that has specific features that can address the school problems. To realize objective, we adopt waterfall software development method to build the information system. We also evaluate our design by using black box testing to ensure its functionality. Results show that our developed system works as it is designed and can handle any request from user without causing any errors.

Abstract:
School library provides various facilities and services adjusted to the needs of students as library users. With the availability of various facilities and services in the school library, the students can choose the facilities and library services that want to be utilized to meet their needs in the school environment. This study aims to determine the characteristics of students in the utilization of school library. This research uses quantitative approach with descriptive analysis. The location of this research is in a library of a Senior High School (SMA) in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that high school students in the use of school libraries have different characteristics. They more often visit the library during break time compared to other times. Students use the library for school work, and some students do other activities in the library. In the case of borrowing books, the students mostly only borrow one book, the borrowed book is in Bahasa Indonesia, and not many students borrow collections in foreign languages. From this research, it can also be seen that many collections that do not fit between the bookshelves and the catalog / OPAC. Thus, it makes the students prefer to search directly on the shelf instead of using the catalog / OPAC. On the other hand, it is also because the students are still confused in using OPAC.

Abstract:
The Library of the State Vocational School of Jenawi implements a manual database system where the transaction process is slow and inefficient. The frequent delay in returning books also adds to the problems. This study aims to build a library application that manages library data, including member data, borrowing-returning books data, calculating fines for returning books, and book searches. The method used is SDLC (System Development Life Cycle) which consists of the analysis, design, implementation and testing. The application built with Delphi can manage library data, handle book circulation, and automatically send Short Message Service (SMS) to the borrower as a reminder of the book's return schedule.

Abstract:
This survey study examines the type and frequency of books borrowed by students according to age, sex and reading ability. It seeks to redress the sparsity of information available on the types and style of books borrowed by children. This survey study is based on data gathered over 14 weeks at Wanniassa Hills Primary School. Weekly library borrowings were recorded for Years 2. 3/4 and 5/6. A sample of 90 children, 30 from each year level was selected and individual borrowings were coded for analysis according to the type of book borrowed. The SAS System was used to tabulate the data and conclusions were drawn from the results thus obtained. The survey study revealed that females borrow more books generally than males. A general pattern of book borrowing is evident. Females tend to progress more quickly man males through this pattern of borrowing. Males tend to prefer Non- Fiction books, progressing to Choose Your Own Adventure books and Fantasy Game books. Recommendations are based on these findings and other outcomes of the survey study. This survey study has implications for classroom practice, libraries, basic readers and further study.

Abstract:
From Club Room to Carnegie Library traces the extent, influence and development of book lending provision in nineteenth-century Ulster. This innovative survey starts with the neighbourhood book club that met at an inn or in a member's house, then examines how enterprising business owners diversified to lend books for a fee, before going on to explore the range of organisations that added book lending to their activities and finishes with the establishment of the public library service which was financially assisted by Andrew Carnegie. Within these investigative chapters criteria have been devised and applied to focus on the purpose, occurrence and location, book consumption and membership of these facilities. For the first time information from diverse secondary literature has been critically analysed and pertinent data expressed in tabular form to collate and therefore reveal extant knowledge marshalled under the relevant criteria. The tables, included as extensive appendices, are an integral part of the research. The primary sources, some unique to this research, have been explored to expand the number of book lending facilities, widen the geographical coverage and discover more about the people who established and used the facilities. The information thus gained has also been tabulated so this new information is also in accessible format. The final chapter combines the secondary literature and the primary research to develop a detailed account of this educational and recreational practice, to discover patterns and provide statistics about book lending practices that to date have been vague or avoided altogether. From Club Room to Carnegie Library is a unique examination of book lending practices which takes the subject to greater depth and covers a longer time frame than previous work on the topic.

The purpose of this study is to investigate book borrowing habit and its implications on learning efficacy and course taking patterns. The data we used are from the undergraduate students who enrolled at the National Taipei University between 2001 and 2013. Two aspects of learning are our main focuses: the diversity of a student’s courses taking and his/her GPA ranking. To gauge book borrowing habit’s effect on those two aspects, we also control the effect of gender, library resource using patterns (including the book renewal frequency, the pattern of non-book borrowing as well as the interlibrary book borrowing), course load, admitted channels as well as students’ majors and entrance years. The result shows that students who don’t borrow books have the most diverse course curriculum, but the lowest GPA ranking; while those who borrow the most have the least diverse course curriculum and the highest GPA ranking. This may imply that students who have reading habit tend to understand more their interests. Therefore, they are more focused on the subjects they take in the university and perform better.
