Abstract:
AbstractA lack of learners’ discipline is a major school problem in secondary schools in Mauritius. The study aims at determining and examining the main causes of this problem in the context of Mauritius. Qualitative data were collected from learners, educators, principals and parents of four secondary schools by using focus group interviews and individual face-to-face interviews. By using content analysis, the study revealed that the causes of learners’ lack of discipline originate from the family (the parenting style, working parents, ineffective parental discipline and the dysfunctional family), the learners’ attitudes to education and schooling, the educators’ attitudes to their role of maintaining learner discipline, the principals’ lack of authority and leadership in managing learner discipline and the influence of peer group in the school setting. The study shows that all the stakeholders of the school community are responsible for the deterioration of learner discipline in secondary schools. It recommends that there should be a decentralisation of learner discipline strategies from the Ministry of Education to the secondary school principals who should be empowered to set up their institutional school discipline plan.

Abstract:
There is a longstanding and pressing challenge regarding overuse of exclusionary discipline (e.g., office discipline referrals, suspensions) for students of color and students with disabilities. Moreover, many common efforts to address the problem have not been shown to enhance equity in school discipline. This article describes a promising four-step approach, described in the freely available PBIS Disproportionality Data Guide, for using school discipline data to identify specific interactions that are more susceptible to the effects of implicit bias on decision making and change the environment to meet the needs of all students. A case study is included that identified disproportionality for physical aggression on the playground as a primary source of overall disproportionality and implemented a plan that included elements of explicit instruction and cultural responsiveness. Results showed a consistent decrease in discipline disproportionality over time.

Abstract:
One commonly used strategy used in attempts to decrease racial disproportionality in school discipline across the country is sharing data with school administrators that discipline disparities are a problem in their schools with the assumption that it will increase attention to equity and improve outcomes. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of providing monthly disciplinary equity reports to school administrators in 35 schools on levels of (a) disciplinary equity report viewing, (b) disciplinary equity, and (c) inclusion of disciplinary equity into school improvement plan goals. We used a small, double-blind randomized controlled trial in which half of the schools were randomly assigned to receive either monthly disciplinary equity reports or monthly general discipline reports. Results showed that schools receiving the equity reports had significantly increased rates of viewing equity reports but no meaningful change in disciplinary equity or equity goal setting.

Abstract:
The first year I was given a lesson-plan book to use for teaching, I was bewildered. My plans could not possibly fit into those two-inch-by-three-inch rectangles. Besides, we were also required to submit weekly lesson plans, which included a list of performance objectives, activities, materials, and assignments. I decided to use the plan book as a type of appointment calendar in which I would note changes in the school day, special assemblies, fire drills, meetings with counselors, and conferences with parents. To keep my materials organized, I stored my weekly lesson plans in the back of the lesson-plan book. But extra space still remained. Then I discovered what, for me, became a very effective tool in classroom management.

Abstract:
Abstract One of the leadership role of the secondary school principal is learner discipline management. However, in the context of Mauritius, the behavioural strategies that they implement are found to be ineffective due to various barriers. This study examines the current barriers that are imbedded into the education system and which are obstacles to effective learner discipline management. A qualitative research approach was adopted in order to collect data on the barriers among principals, educators, parents, superintendents and learners. It was found that political interference of parents, the universal free transport system, too much bureaucracy when reporting cases of indiscipline to the Ministry of Education, a lack of collaboration between educators, the school superintendent and the principal, and a lack of parental involvement in learner discipline management in schools are the main barriers to the effective implementation of behavioural strategies by principals in the state secondary schools in Mauritius. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the Ministry of Education rethink about the educational policies in terms of free transport for learners and that the school principal, along with the parents, educators, learners and superintendent, sets up a school discipline plan that would adopt a collaborative management of the problem of learner discipline.

Abstract:
Editorial Summary Professional drawing has always played an important role in the training of architects. Plan-drawings have already been sufficiently considered in established architectural research. The research of Peter Schmid presented in this text focuses on so far only scarcely examined architectural sketchbooks as well as various records used for architectural education, such as manuscripts for lectures or notes on perspective theory which belong to the »Munich School« - a tradition of teaching hand-drawing that developed over a period of 150 years through an on-going teacher-student relationship at the Technical University of Munich. He finds that the aim of »Munich School« was not only learning how to illustrate, but also to comprehend architecture through graphic analysis - thereby combining teaching and practice. Against the background that the interest in hand-drawings has significantly increased in recent years, the research helps to refine the role of hand-drawings today as a tool that sets »processes of cognition in motion«. At SYSU, the introduction occurred in three stages: leading edge (2001–2003); beginning (2004–2008); and comprehensive development (2009–). Following these stages, SYSU launched a full range of programs offering education and training in preservation and conservation, and has formed the SYSU Model, which relies on the first-level discipline, Science of Library, Information and Archive Management.China's Ministry of Education stipulates that in the establishment of the graduate education system of colleges and universities, the first-level discipline is the major discipline and the second-level discipline is a subclass of it. In total, there are 110 first-level disciplines. The science of Library, Information and Archive Management is one of them. In the process, it has also developed unique characteristics, such as effective integration of Chinese and Western theories; attaching equal importance to preservation and conservation; and an effective combination of theory and practice.

Abstract:
Thomas Jefferson's arrangement of buildings around an open lawn at the University of Virginia represents an innovative approach to collegiate planning. Yet it is not this plan but the individual structures that have dominated architectural discussions of the university. While prototypes for the latter have been meticulously researched, the origins of the university plan have remained relatively unexplored. Focusing on the University of Virginia as an institutional building type, this study relates its plan to hospital and school designs available to Jefferson through either his library or professional contacts. It reveals his appreciation of the university as a self-contained community-the academic village-and his sensitivity to the effect of the architectural arrangement on education, discipline, health, and morale.

The students are able to communicate in spoken and written English accurately, fluently and in good manners. Managing a class full of students is one of the biggest challenges faced by teachers. If teachers do not have an effective plan in place, there will not be much opportunity for students to engage in meaningful learning experiences. Thus, teachers will find themselves refereeing instead of teaching. Classroom management is a term used by teachers to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behavior by students. Classroom management means teachers’ strategies to create and maintain an orderly learning environment and discipline means teachers’ responses to students’ misbehavior. So, I decided to pursue a doctoral degree so that I can teach college students. “I got admitted to a PhD program in the US.” I excitedly said to my wife. She was thrilled to hear the good news. Objective: To describe a formal process designed to determine the nature and extent of change that may enhance the depth of student learning in the pre-professional, clinical chiropractic environment. Methods: Project teams in the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) School of Health Sciences and the Division of Chiropractic explored questions of clinical assessment in several health care disciplines of the School and the issue of implementing change in a manner that would be embraced by the clinicians who supervise student-learning in the clinical environment. The teams applied to RMIT for grant funding within the Learning and Teaching Investment Fund to support two proposed studies. Results: Both research proposals were fully funded and are in process. Discussion: The genesis of this work is the discovery that the predominant management plan in the chiropractic teaching clinics is based on diagnostic reductionism. It is felt this is counter-productive to the holistic dimensions of chiropractic practice taught in the classroom and non-supportive of chiropractic's paradigm shift towards wellness. A need is seen to improve processes around student assessment in the contemporary work-integrated learning that is a prime element of learning within the clinical disciplines of the School of Health Sciences, including chiropractic. Conclusion: Any improvements in the manner of clinical assessment within the chiropractic discipline will need to be accompanied by improvement in the training and development of the clinicians responsible for managing the provision of quality patient care by Registered Chiropractic Students.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on the development and analysis of an internal bibliometric services workshop for subject librarians. Primary goals of the workshop were to create an opportunity for collegial knowledge and skill sharing, and to identify discipline specific gaps and future support requirements. Design/methodology/approach Two campus librarians who typically offer bibliometric support services used pre- and post-surveys to plan and assess the workshop for subject liaison librarians. Findings Subject librarians from across the university expressed interest in developing bibliometric support services. The 12 workshop participants (30 percent of subject librarians) support diverse areas including the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, education and outreach, and the school of business. Post-workshop survey respondents highlighted the contextualization of available measures and the appropriate application of metrics in different disciplines to be the most helpful topics covered. Finally, while the institution subscribes to several citation analysis databases, more familiarity with Google Scholar citations was requested to address user needs and preferences across the various disciplines. Most participants expressed interest in attending additional workshops. Originality/value This study showcases the experience of campus librarians working together across academic schools and disciplines to respond to the increasing demand for bibliometric and scholarly impact support services. While services such as citation analysis have typically been siloed in specific job descriptions or subject areas within the library, these are service areas that can benefit from internal library-collaboration opportunities and knowledge sharing.

Abstract:
Analysis of multiple forms of data from a high-need K–8 charter school led to the hypothesis that increasing disciplinary disruptions and poor student academic achievement were the results of endemic student trauma. The principal, the lead school counselor, and an advisory council created a plan to explore and address behavioral and social/emotional issues, and wrote grants to sustain programming changes. The school achieved success in multiple areas, including: improving its comprehensive school counseling program using the ASCA National Model framework; benchmarking its practice with the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies; reducing noncounseling duties for school counselors and providing 80% direct and indirect services to students; reducing the school counselor-to-student ratio; restructuring student discipline policies through the implementation of school-wide trauma-informed care practices; and utilizing social/emotional learning and trauma-informed lessons in the classroom. This case study outlines how one school created multidisciplinary internal and community-based teams to support trauma-informed practices for students, teachers, staff, and families, while emphasizing school counselor–principal leadership to build social capital. Quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square tests and development of Informal Activities Effect Index (IAEI). On the other hand, qualitative data used content analysis for analysis. The analysis were to assess the impact of informal activities on the public secondary schools. The result reveals that men of middle age majorly engaged in informal activity as possible avenue for employment opportunity and poverty alleviation strategy. However, their location have greater impact on students’ academic performance and becomes nuisance to the public secondary schools environment. The authors suggest enforcement of discipline to maintain educational standard, fencing of the school’s environment and employment of food vendors to prevent sneaking out of students during the school hours. The effectiveness of planning officers at local and state government levels for proper design and implementation of the development plan is inevitable for appropriate development control.
