Feser, Edward. Freedom in the Scholastic Tradition. Edited by David Schmidtz and Carmen E. Pavel. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199989423.013.33.

Full text
Abstract:
The Scholastic tradition has its roots in Aristotelianism and is represented today by Thomists, neo-Aristotelians, and others. Scholastic thinkers discuss both freedom of the will, and freedom in the political sense as related to rights, justice, and market exchanges. These two types of freedom are connected. This chapter outlines the natural law approach to ethics which provides the moral and metaphysical background to Scholastic discussions of freedom; expounds the two main conceptions of freedom of the will developed within Scholasticism; shows how these conceptions are associated with two conceptions of natural rights; discusses how natural rights enter into Scholastic moral and political thought; and discusses Scholastic attitudes toward liberal democracy and the market economy. Particularly in its Thomist version, the Scholastic tradition developed a conception of political and economic freedom which represents a middle ground between classical liberalism or libertarianism on the one hand, and egalitarian liberalism on the other.

Sytsma, David S. Richard Baxter as Philosophical Theologian. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190274870.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues for Baxter’s importance as a theologian engaged with philosophy. Although Baxter is largely known today as a practical theologian, he also excelled in knowledge of the scholastics and was known in the seventeenth century also for his scholastic theology. He followed philosophical trends closely, was connected with many people involved in mechanical philosophy, and responded directly to the ideas of René Descartes, Pierre Gassendi, Robert Boyle, Thomas Willis, Thomas Hobbes, and Benedict de Spinoza. As a leading Puritan and nonconformist, his views are especially relevant to the question of the relation of the Puritan tradition to the beginnings of modern science and philosophy. The chapter introduces the way in which “mechanical philosophy” will be used, and concludes with a brief synopsis of the argument of the book.

Massa, Mark S. The End of the Catholic Nineteenth Century in 1968. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190851408.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter narrates the promulgation of Pope Paul VI’s famous letter on birth control in 1968, and the unfavorable response it received by Catholic theologians. It offers a historical overview of how St. Thomas Aquinas utilized Aristotle’s idea of natural law, making that concept basic in Catholic sexual teaching. The author describes the nineteenth-century followers of Aquinas as “neo-scholastics” who prided themselves on a systematic interpretation of Catholic doctrine in light of an unchanging law embedded in an almost objectivist understanding of “nature” by God, discoverable by human reason, the moral implications of which were equally unchanging. The author argues that it was this rigid nineteenth-century neo-scholastic natural law tradition that helped to set up the collapse within the American Catholic community in the decades after the 1960s.
