Abstract:
This is the first full biography of John Wesley Gilbert (1863–1923), a pioneering African American scholar, archaeologist, teacher, civic leader, and missionary. The first part of the book traces Prof. Gilbert’s life from his birth into slavery in rural Georgia through his early education in the segregated public schools of Augusta, Georgia, on to his studies at the Augusta Institute and Atlanta Baptist Seminary (forerunners of Atlanta’s famed Morehouse College), at the Methodist-sponsored Paine Institute in Augusta, and at Brown University. Its central chapters focus on Gilbert’s sojourn in Greece during 1890–1891 as a member of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, a research institution founded in 1881 by a consortium of American colleges and universities. The book examines Gilbert’s relationships with his American School professors and classmates, his experiences of living in Greece, his topographical research on the urban demes (neighborhoods) of ancient Athens, and his archaeological work at the ancient Greek city of Eretria. The final portion of the book explores Gilbert’s life after Athens, as he earned a national reputation as an African American educational, civic, and religious leader. It examines his arduous 1911–1912 cooperative mission to the Belgian Congo as a representative of the Colored Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, with his white companion, Bishop Walter Russell Lambuth of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MECS). Throughout the book, Prof. Gilbert’s experiences and contributions are placed into the broader context of nineteenth-and early twentieth-century US history and especially into the context of African American intellectual and cultural life during that period.

Lorbiecki, Marybeth. A Fierce Green Fire. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199965038.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
For anyone interested in wildlife, birds, wilderness areas, parks, ecology, conservation, environmental literature, and ethics, the name Aldo Leopold is sure to pop up. Since first publication, Aldo Leopold: A Fierce Green Fire has remained the classic short, inspiring biography of Leopold--the perfect companion to reading his ever popular A Sand County Almanac. Winning numerous awards, this comprehensive account of his life story is dynamic and readable, written in the context of the history of American conservation and illustrated with historic photographs. Marybeth Lorbiecki has now enriched A Fierce Green Fire in a way no other biography on Leopold has, adding numerous chapters on the ripple effects of his ideas, books, ecological vision, land ethic, and Shack, as well as of the ecological contributions of his children, graduate students, contemporary scholars, and organizations--and the wilderness lands he helped preserve. Lorbiecki weaves these stories and factual information into the biography in a compelling way that keeps both lay and academic readers engaged. In the introduction to this edition, Lorbiecki makes it clear how much better our lives are because Leopold lived and why today we so radically need what he left us to bring about paradigm shifts in our ethical, economic, and cultural thinking. Instead of losing relevance, Leopold's legacy has gained ever more necessity and traction in the face of contemporary national and world challenges, such as species loss and climate change. Even the phenological studies he started at as a hobby are proving valuable, showing the climatic shifts that have occurred at the Shack lands since the 1930s, recognized by the plants and animals.

Almagor, Eran. Plutarch and the Persica. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9780748645558.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book addresses two historical mysteries. The first is the content and character of the fourth century BCE Greek works on the Persian Achaemenid Empire treatises called the Persica. The second is the method of work of the second century CE biographer Plutarch of Chaeronea (CE 45-120) who used these works to compose his biographies, in particular the Life of the Persian king Artaxerxes. By dealing with both issues simultaneously, Almagor proposes a new way of approaching the two entangled problems, and offers a better understanding of both the portrayal of ancient Persia in the lost Persica works and the manner of their reception and adaptation nearly five hundred years later. Intended for both scholars and students of the Achaemenid Empire and Greek imperial literature, this book bridges the two worlds and two important branches of scholarship. The book builds a picture of the character and structure of the lost Persica works by Ctesias of Cnidus, Deinon of Colophon, Heracleides of Cyme. While focusing on the Artaxerxes (and certain other passages), it shows how Plutarch used the Persica.

Funke, Melissa. Phryne. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350371903.

Full text
Abstract:
How did Mnesarete, a girl from Boeotia, turn into Phryne the famous beauty, and how did she end up as an enduring symbol of ancient Greek culture? This book pieces together the story of the notorious fourth-century Athenian sex worker, Phryne. It considers her early life and her development into a cultural figure, whose influence and legacy have lasted from her own lifetime to the present day. It also investigates her infamous nude courtroom appearance, her influence on one of the most well-known statues from antiquity and her connection to celebrated figures from Alexander the Great to the artist Apelles. Her appearances in modern culture, ranging from Belle Epoque cabaret shows to 1950s Italian film, are also analysed, offering an account of how the real life of a woman turned into the biography of a dream girl. Nothing but fragmentsremain of Phryne’s story, short anecdotes passed on and on again in literary compendia, that tell the story of a witty and beautiful woman who amassed great wealth, associated with some of the most well-known historical figures of ancient Greece. They create an image of a life that is glamorous and titillating, yet they also hint at the tenuous position of a foreign-born sex worker in a society structured to privilege male citizens above all others. While many scholars have explored individual sources and anecdotes about the fourth-century BCE hetaira Phryne, a thorough assessment of her biographical tradition has not yet been published. Phryne: A Life in Fragments examines the transformation of a real woman into a literary dreamgirl through the process of fragmentation. Focusing on the Hellenistic and Imperial literary traditions and their fascination with sex workers from Classical Athens, this book examines the anecdotes that tell Phryne’s story. The introduction compiles the stories about Phryne, accounting for how Classical Athens became the focus of literary engagement in the Hellenistic and Imperial periods and the place of the hetairai in this process. Chapter one traces the emergence of Phryne in Athens, examining cases featuring Neaira and Alke to speculate on how Phryne came to Athens and how she may have lived in that city. I also use comedies to investigate Phryne in her own lifetime. Chapter two on Phryne the artist’s model looks at Phryne’s relationship to Praxiteles and her connection to the Aphrodite of Knidos, considering the theme of nudity in her literary depictions. Chapter three further pursues this idea further, offering literary-historical context for the conclusion of the trial, Phryne’s nude revelation. The final chapter evaluates Phryne’s cultural legacy in paintings, stage performances, and films. It begins with a discussion of the images of Phryne by Angelica Kauffmann, before examining the impact of Gérôme’s Phryne devant l’Areopage on French culture in the nineteenth century. This chapter also considers the women who posed as Phryne and those who played her on stage. I conclude with a discussion of three Italian films that featured Phryne’s stories and their female stars, meditating on the ways that narratives of women’s lives are shaped in the public eye.
