In a recent study entitled ‘Numinous Experience and Religious Language’, Dr Leon Schlamm has endorsed Rudolf Otto's well known and much discussed account of the relationship of religious experience to religious language, and then used this position to criticize some highly influential voices in the continuing debate on the precise nature of mystical experience. The aim of this paper, in response to Schlamm, is to question the plausibility of Otto's account in The Idea of the Holy of the nature of religious knowledge and his closely related understanding of the relationship between religious experience (or as he prefers, numinous experience) and religious language. By implication, this also calls into question Schlamm's use of Otto's position in his criticism of those writers on mysticism that he takes issue with, chiefly Steven Katz and those who propose an essentially Kantian interpretation of mysticism. However, for the most part I shall leave the contemporary debate on mysticism unaddressed, though my comments do have a bearing on it. If there is a wider target, it is chiefly those interpreters of religion, like Schlamm, who conceive of the relationship of religious experience (or the religious object itself) and religious language in essentially the same way as Otto. One thinks immediately here of Friedrich Schleiermacher, whom Otto admired greatly, and who stands in the same Liberal Protestant tradition. Also Karl Barth, who ironically, for all his strictures of Liberal Protestantism, actually propounded a view of the meaning and nature of religious language which is remarkably similar to the views of both Schleiermacher and Otto; at least at the beginning of his theological career, in his famous commentary on Romans: all that talk of God as ‘the inexpressible’ and ‘the Wholly Other’. In addition one could mention those classical texts of Hinduism and Buddhism, which like many contemporary writers on mysticism (e.g. the late Deirdre Green), conceive of mystical experience and the truth which it reveals as ‘beyond the scope of discursive thought, language and empirical activity’.

Des méthodes spectroscopiques et électrocinétiques permettront de comprendre la différence d'hydratation de la surface minérale. Des essais de flottation à l'échelle du laboratoire et une modélisation moléculaire du mécanisme d'interaction entre les collecteurs et la surface de quartz et d'hématite seront également réalisés. Des essais pilotes valideront les résultats obtenus dans ce travail de thèse multi-échelle The main objective of the thesis work is to define and explain the differential behavior of hematite and silicates using more selective reagents in the reverse flotation of iron ore slimes. The proposed methodology is based on using the effects of flotation reagents to increase the recovery of fine particles from iron ore processing tailings. Spectroscopic and electrokinetic methods will make it possible to understand the difference in hydration of the mineral surface. Laboratory-scale flotation tests and molecular modeling of the mechanism of interaction between the collectors and the surface of quartz and hematite will also be carried out. Pilot tests will validate the results obtained in this multi-scale thesis work

L'amélioration du contrôle automatisé du séchage des schlamms de charbon, à la centrale Emile Huchet de Carling, nécessite de connaître en continu la teneur en humidité du produit en sortie du sécheur. La nature du produit (corps noir, colmatant) et les importantes variations de sa composition (granulométrie, teneur en cendre, impureté) ne permettant pas d'utiliser les techniques connues de mesure en continu de l'humidité. Après la description de l'installation, une synthèse de la théorie descriptive du processus de séchage par convection dans les sécheurs à tambour rotatif est exposée. Un modèle de connaissance du sécheur étant complexe et inexploitable dans le système de régulation existant de l'instrumentation étant insuffisante pour en permettre une étude expérimentale, une recherche d'un modèle de type boite noire est décidée. A partir d'une première série de campagnes de mesures, un modèle statique linéaire identifié par la méthode des moindres carrés à partir de points de fonctionnement permanents fournit une estimation du taux d'humidité sur une place de 2 à 15% très satisfaisante. Une structure de modèle dynamique linéaire est identifiée avec les méthodes PEM (Predictor Error Method) et MCA (Moindres Carrés Alternés). Seul le modèle identifié par la méthode MCA fournit une estimation aussi satisfaisante que le modèle statique simulé sur les données des campagnes de mesures avec les périodes de fonctionnement transitoire. Après une importante phase de validation hors ligne, puis en ligne du modèle statique, celui-ci est intégré dans le système de régulation
