Abstract:
The theme of the Second World War and the Holocaust is one of the topical themes of contemporary fiction and cinema. Outstanding writers and directors of our time are turning to the embodiment of this tragic topic. They set themselves the task of comprehending the past and giving the third millennium generation spiritual experience that will help young people combat the manifestations of racism and xenophobia in the modern world. The article deals with the novel “Schindler’s Ark” by Th. Keneally, “The Children of Noah” by E.-E. Schmitt, “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” by J. Boyne, “The Book Tief” by M. Zuzak and movies that are based on these books. In the genres of a historic novel and psychological story based on the documents, the writers revealed the complicated social processes in Europe during 1930-1940. The writers described the historic events within the life of ordinary people who lived in the terrible circumstances of the totalitarian system. The symbols playedthe main role in revealing the subject of the Holocaust in the novels and films about the Second World War and the Holocaust. Thomas Keneally continued the traditions of romantic irony and added to it some social, psychological and philosophical meanings. The irony in the novel by Thomas Keneally “Schindler’s Ark” plays an important role in the investigation of European society in the tragic period of the 20thcentury. In the novels by Thomas Keneally irony takes place on the different levels such as plot, composition, imagology, time and space, style and language. T. Keneally broadens the meaning of irony and its function in the documentary and historic novel. The irony in the novel “Schindler’s Ark” maintains some main functions: social for explaining the anti-humanistic essence of fascism, war, racial hatred, research in investigating the tragedy of the Holocaust and its consequences, psychological in revealing the psychology of people of different social class, philosophical in discussing the important issues of human life in the word, axiological dealing with the values of mercy, morality, the ability to resist violence. T. Kenealy represents different forms of irony such as the irony of the narrator, the irony of the author, the combination of controversial documentary facts, the contradiction of phenomenon and notions, the comparison of the different points of view, self-irony, irony as inner enlightenment, catharsis. In the novel “Schindler’s Ark” by T. Kenealy the author of the article analyzed the traditions of world literature such as B. Brecht within the motive of personal financial profit from the war, N. Gogol within the motive of buying and selling the dead souls. The writer represented these motives in his own way as the events took place during the real historic time, and he found the inner power in people of past century to keep their life, humanity and culture on the Earth. The irony is a unique feature of T. Keneally’s individual style and it enriched the genre of novel.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article is framed by a wider interest in how literary careers are made: what mechanisms other than the personal/biographical and the text-centred evaluations of scholars influence a writer’s choices in persisting in building a succession of works that are both varied and yet form a consistently recognizable “brand.” Translation is one element in the wider network of “machinery” that makes modern literary publishing. It is a marker of success that might well keep authors going despite lack of sales or negative reviews at home. Translation rights can provide useful supplementary funds to sustain a writer’s output. Access to new markets overseas might also inspire interest in countries and topics other than their usual focus or the demands of their home market. The Australian novelist and playwright Thomas Keneally achieved a critical regard for fictions of Australian history within a nationalist cultural resurgence, but to make a living as a writer he had to keep one eye on overseas markets as well. While his work on European topics has not always been celebrated at home, he has continued to write about them and to find readers in languages other than English. Poland features in a number of Keneally’s books and is one of the leading sources of translation for his work. The article explores possible causes and effects around this fact, and surveys some reader responses from Poland. It notes the connections that Keneally’s Catholic background and activist sympathies allow to modern Polish history and assesses the central place of his Booker-winning Schindler’s Ark filmed as Schindler’s List.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 1526 BACKGROUND: The immunotoxin combotox (1: 1 mixture of deglycosylated ricin-A chain (dgRTA)-containing anti-human CD19 and anti-CD22 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) (Combotox) has demonstrated single agent activity in children (Herrera et al, 2009) and adults (Schindler et al, 2011) with relapsed/refractory B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Even though single agent Combotox is effective in reducing the number of blasts, relapses usually occur early on especially in advanced disease. We designed experiments to explore potential synergy of concurrent and sequential administration of Combotox and cytarabine (Ara-C) in a murine model of advanced human pre-B cell ALL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A xenograft model of advanced ALL in NOD mice was established using the human pre-B lymphoblast cell line NAML/6 (Herrera et al 2009). 6–8 week old NOD mice (Cg-Prkdcscid Il2rgtm1Wjl/SzJ) were injected in the tail vein with 8–10×106 NALM/6 cells. The presence of leukemic blasts in the blood was confirmed microscopically 7, 14 and 18 days after inoculation. Drug administration was done after establishment of increased blast counts in order to mimic human advanced disease. In the first experiment (concurrent schedule) mice were treated daily on Days (d) 12–17 with either 1) Ara-C, 2) Combotox, 3) Ara-C concurrent with Combotox, or 4) normal saline (control), respectively. In a second experiment (sequential schedule), mice were treated with either 1) Ara-C on Days (d) 7–9 after inoculation, 2) Combotox on d14, d16 and d18, 3) Ara-C d7-9 followed by Combotox on d14, d16 and d18 or 4) normal saline (control) on d7-9, d14, d16 and d18. The doses were 200mg/kg daily x3 for Ara-C and 2.4mg/kg anti-CD19-dgRTA plus 1.5mg/kg anti-CD22-dgRTA per injection every other day x3 for Combotox The median survival time (MST) for each treatment group was calculated. Overall survival was plotted as Kaplan-Meier curve and a 2-sided log-rank test was performed. A p-value <0.05 indicated statistical significance. RESULTS: Both concurrent (Experiment #1) and sequential administration (Experiment #2) of Ara-C combined with Combotox resulted in statistically significantly improved overall survival (p-value <0.05 for both schedules). The median survival time (MST) was 27 and 28 days respectively for concurrent and sequential combined chemo-immunotherapy with Ara-C and Combotox as compared to control (MST 17 & 19 days) and/or each agent by itself (MST Ara-C 19 & 20 days; Combotox 20 and 18 days) as demonstrated in Figures 1 and 2. CONCLUSION: The combination of Ara-C and Combotox resulted in improved survival in mice xenografted with NALM/6 cells, which served as a model for advanced B-lineage ALL. Whether concurrent or sequential administration has superior efficacy is under current active investigation. These results influenced the design of a clinical trial that will explore the safety and efficacy of Ara-C combined with Combotox in adults with relapsed/refractory ALL (clinicaltrials.gov identifier NCT01408160). Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
Abstract:
This thesis argues that since unification, contemporary popular Hollywood and German films encourage public debate and commemoration of the Holocaust and National Socialism. This thesis builds on the established Hollywood and German dynamic that was revealed in the debate surrounding Holocaust (Dir. Marvin J. Chomsky. 1978) and Heimat (Dir. Edgar Reitz. 1984) to examine the contemporary differences and debates between these two film industries' representation of the Holocaust and the National Socialist past through popular film. Specifically, the focus of this thesis is the interpretation of the morally ambiguous heroic German character, as portrayed in German and Hollywood film. The films chosen are adaptations of popular texts, remakes of other films, and/or based on historical figures and include: Schindler's List (Dir. Steven Spielberg. 1993), The Pianist (Dir. Roman Polanski. 2002), Aimee & Jaguar (Dir. Max Farberbock. 1999), The Reader (Dir. Stephen Daldry. 2008), Amen. (Dir. Costa-Gavras. 2002), John Rahe (Dir. Florian Gallenberger. 2009) and Valkyrie (Dir. Bryan Singer. 2008). All feature a heroic German character, for which Schindler is the prototype. The way in which contemporary issues surrounding popular representations of the Holocaust and National Socialism are negotiated through this characterisation in German film reveals a nuanced approach to national narratives, while Hollywood discusses specifically American or universal values through the portrayal of German history. The trope 'the heroic German' has become acceptable in contemporary popular culture on both sides of the Atlantic, and as such has transformed into the heroic Nazi trope. This thesis also concludes that these films reflect the needs of contemporary audiences by acting as a prosthetic and cultural memory and that Vergangenheitshewalligung is truly a process without a foreseeable end.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of ancestral narratives in the fiction of Thomas Keneally and Christopher Koch. Initially, ancestry in literature creates an historical relationship which articulates the link between the past and the present. In this sense ancestry functions as a type of cultural memory where various issues of inheritance can be negotiated. However, the real value of ancestral narratives lies in their power to aid in the construction of both personal and communal identities. They have the potential to transform these identities, to transgress “natural” boundaries and to reshape conventional identities in the light of historical experience. For Keneally, ancestral narratives depict national forbears who “narrate the nation” into being. His earlier fictions present ancestors of the nation within a mythic and symbolic framework to outline Australian national identity. This identity is static, oppositional, and characterized by the delineation of boundaries which set nations apart from one another. However, Keneally’s more recent work transforms this conventional construction of national identity. It depicts an Irish-Australian diasporic identity which is hyphenated and transgressive: it transcends the conventional notion of nations as separate entities pitted against one another. In this way Keneally’s ancestral narratives enact the potential for transforming identity through ancestral narrative. On the other hand, Koch’s work is primarily concerned with the intergenerational trauma causes by losing or forgetting one’s ancestral narrative. His novels are concerned with male gender identity and the fragmentation which characterizes a self-destructive idea of maleness. While Keneally’s characters recover their lost ancestries in an effort to reshape their idea of what it is to be Australian, Koch’s main protagonist lives in ignorance of his ancestor’s life. He is thus unable to take the opportunity to transform his masculinity due to the pervasive cultural amnesia surrounding his family history and its role in Tasmania’s past. While Keneally and Koch depict different outcomes in their fictional ancestral narratives they are both deeply concerned with the potential to transform national and gender identities through ancestry.

Abstract:
“Shoah and memory” looks at the Holocaust through the lens of Jewish literature worldwide, focusing on the differences between the works of Anne Frank (Diary of a Young Girl), Elie Wiesel (Night), Hannah Arendt (Eichmann in Jerusalem), and others, studying the reception each of these works received in Jewish and non-Jewish milieus. There is a connection between memory and testimonial literature, which can especially be seen in fiction as it intersects with the anti-Semitic trend known as “Holocaust denial." We have cases such as “invented” memoirs, for example, The Painted Bird by Jerzy Koziński. There are also a number of nonliterary Holocaust narratives such as the films Shoah and Schindler’s List and the graphic novel Maus.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the Jewishness of Hollywood film. It explores how Jewishness is encoded within specific key Jewish American films — films which, while made by Jewish American film-makers, are accessible to and indeed intended for a mainstream, and therefore not necessarily a Jewish, audience. The emphasis on the ‘ness’ in ‘Jewishness’ moves the humanistic analysis of popular cinema from what the director intended to the way that different audiences interpret the production. It is a way to get at Jewish meanings which may be different from literal meaning, which tends to be defined by mainstream or Christian standards. Coding is here recognized as a kind of cultural bilingualism wherein, while the films are on the surface fully comprehensible to all potential audience members, Jewish and non-Jewish, certain discourses will be directed to and more immediately understood by those who have esoteric knowledge of Jewish American culture. Through a consideration of various types of cinematic encodedness — of language, of customs, and of music — the chapter investigates the emergent Jewishness of these films, which include Exodus (1960), Schindler's List (1993), and Fiddler on the Roof (1971).

Kennel, Charles F. "Bimodal Plasma Sheet Flow." In Convection and Substorms. Oxford University Press, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195085297.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
How does the plasma sheet respond to the complex pattern of waves coming over the poles from bursty magnetopause reconnection events, or to the vortices and other irregular perturbations coming around the flanks of the magnetosphere in the low-latitude boundary layer? It is probably too much to expect that the complex input from the dayside will sort itself out into a steady flow on the nightside, but there has been a seductive hope that, on a statistical basis, the observations of the plasma sheet could be rationalized using steady convection thinking. This hope depends on the belief that the average magnetic field configuration in the plasma sheet actually is compatible with steady convection. The first doubts on this score were raised by Erickson and Wolf (1980), and were subsequently elaborated by Tsyganenko (1982), Birn and Schindler (1983), and Liu and Hill (1985); the“plasma sheet pressure paradox” they posed is the subject of Section 9.2. Theoretical arguments are one thing, measurements are another; the truly important issue is whether the real plasma sheet manifests steady flow. Several groups have searched large data sets to see whether the statistically averaged flow in the central plasma sheet resembles the flow predicted by the steady convection model. This effort has led to a growing but still incomplete comprehension of the statistical properties of plasma sheet transport. Results obtained using ensembles of data acquired by ISEE 1 and AMPTE/IRM will be reviewed in Section 9.3. The unusual distribution of bulk flow velocities suggests that the plasma sheet flow is bimodal, alternating between a predominant irregular low-speed state and an infrequently occurring state of high-speed earthward flow. In search of steady plasma sheet flow, one could also look into substormfree periods of stable solar wind properties. One of the best such studies, in which great care was taken to find periods of exceptionally stable solar wind and geomagnetic conditions, is reviewed in Section 9.4. Even this study found highly irregular and bursty flow.

Abstract:
The possibilities to derive fracture toughness from small specimens are naturally limited due to constraint requirements which are especially restrictive in toughness testing. The loss of constraint at the crack tip is more likely to occur as specimen size decreases. Application of miniature specimens in fracture toughness testing thus requires a suitable methodology or correction procedure to deal with phenomenon of the constraint loss. Schindler et al. have proposed a simplified mechanical model that can be used to scale-up the key test characteristics from miniature specimen to the larger one. The model is applied to the miniature bending specimens to describe size effect on J-R curve of the Eurofer97 steel. The examined steel exhibits quite high toughness values at upper shelf region of fracture toughness. As a result, experimentally determined J-R curves of three different sizes of pre-cracked bending specimens showed high values of J-integral, which were significantly different each other. Using semi-empirical definition of the exponent of the power law function of J-R curve the performance of the Schindler’s model was quite successful. It was shown that the model is able to handle with size effect of tested pre-cracked three-point-bend specimens.

Abstract:
Although platelets are small and simple in shape, they are complicated in their physiologhy. Their alpha granules and dense bodies secrete a large number of agents that are involved in haemostasis, and the glycoproteins on their surfaces form the linkages with proteins like fibrinogen, fibronectin, collagen and von Willebrand factor that are necessary for adhesion and aggregation (Frojmovic, 1998). Diseases such as heart attack (Meade, 1992), stroke (Harker, 1998) and eclampsia (Schindler et al., 1990), can be the result of pathologies in platelets. Although devices have been recently developed to diagnose platelet function (Nicholson et al., 1998), there is still a need for devices that can examine the multiple factors of platelet physiology that affect thrombus formation. Because fluid shear is a key factor in platelet adhesion and aggregation (Colantuoni et al., 1977), it is necessary to test platelet function under conditions of flow. Also, because of the large number of adhesion receptors and secreted agents that make up a platelet’s physiology, a complete diagnosis of platelet function should be performed on a variety of substrates.

Abstract:
Evaluation of mechanical properties from a small amount of test material is essential in a process of development of new alloys and monitoring of degradation and damage of in-service components. Miniaturization of test specimen together with a specimen reconstitution technique enable direct method of evaluation of mechanical properties if only a limited amount of material is available. Modern types of construction steels and alloys possess improved metallurgical and mechanical properties and also demonstrate a high level of fracture toughness. In these cases, correlation and correction of size effect on fracture toughness between different specimen sizes are needed. Within this contribution the size effect of J-R curve for two sizes of three-point-bend specimens is solved. The J-R curves of three-point-bend specimens with cross-section 10 × 10 mm and 3 × 4 mm of P91 and Eurofer97 steel were determined at room temperature. The existence of size effect is proven as larger specimens demonstrate higher J-R curves than smaller specimens for both steels. Simplified mechanical model based on fracture energies initially proposed by Schindler et al. is applied to describe experimentally determined J-R curves and to predict the observed size effect between used specimen sizes.

Abstract:
<p>The historic building "Du Pont" in Zurich, Switzerland, was constructed between 1912 and 1913 by the Swiss architects Haller &amp; Schindler and it is listed as a cultural heritage object, including not only the Art Deco façade, but also the ground-breaking structure of reinforced concrete. The building includes several structural particularities, such as the slender, reinforced concrete, one-way ribbed slabs, a reinforced concrete truss structure in the roof hanging four floors and three transfer beams on the ground floor diverting the loads from the seven upper floors. This paper presents a detailed description of the different strengthening measures required to allow a more flexible use of the existing floors with larger live and dead loads, and to fulfil the current provisions of the Swiss Standards (SIA). The main objective of the proposed restoration and strengthening measures is to minimize the interventions as much as possible and preserve the original structural system. Of particular interest is the innovative solution adopted for the existing ribbed slabs. The required increase of resistance is obtained through a thin 40 mm overlay of Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) above the carefully prepared existing slab. Due to the significance of the building and the particular characteristics of the existing concrete, experimental tests were conducted. Four specimens of the ribbed slabs were extracted from the building, strengthened on site with UHPFRC and transported to the structural laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ), where the tests were conducted. The excellent results confirmed the suitability of the proposed strengthening solution through UHPFRC, setting a milestone for future restorations of these particular structures.</p>

Abstract:
Abstract Human’s motion and its mechanisms had become interesting in the last years, where the medecine’s field search for rehabilitation methods for handicapped persons. Other fields, like sport sciences, professional or military world, search to distinguish profiles and ways to train them with specific purposes. Besides, recent findings in neuroscience try to describe these mechanisms from an organic point of view. Until now, different researchs had given a model about control motor that describes how the union between the senses’s information allows adaptable movements. One of this sense is the proprioception, the sense which has a quite big factor in the orientation and position of the body, its members and joints. For this reason, research for new strategies to explore proprioception and improve the theories of human motion could be done by three different vias. At first, the sense is analysed in a case-study where three groups of persons are compared in a controlled enviroment with three experimental tasks. The subjects belong to each group by the kind of sport they do: sedentary, normal sportsmen (e.g. athletics, swimming) and martial sportmen (e.g. karate, judo). They are compared thinking about the following hypothesis: “Martial Sportmen have a better proprioception than of the other groups’s subjects: It could be due to the type of exercises they do in their sports as empirically, a contact sportsman shows significantly superior motor skills to the members of the other two groups. The second via are records from encephalogram (EEG) while the experimental tasks are doing. These records are analised a posteriori with a set of processing algorithms to extract characteristics about brain’s activity of the proprioception and motion control. Finally , the study tries to integrate graphic tools to make easy to understand final scientific results which allow us to explore the brain activity of the subjects through easy interfaces (e.g. space-time events, activity intensity, connectivity, specific neural netwoks or anormal activity). In the future, this application could be a complement to assist doctors, researchers, sports center specialists and anyone who must improve the health and movements of handicapped persons.
