In this thesis we study corrections to parton showers in the context of soft collinear effective theory (SCET). Monte Carlo event generators like Pythia or Herwig are heavily used by experimentalists to simulate events and they are indispensable tools to make exclusive theoretical predictions. They are based on a leading log parton shower algorithm that allows to resum the dominant contributions in the soft and collinear radiation. In this work we construct a framework to classify corrections to the parton shower that can be used to systematically improve event generators. We formulate parton showers as a standard matching procedure between a tower of soft collinear effective field theories called SCETi. We find two different kinds of corrections: hard-scattering corrections and jet-structure corrections. To relate these different effective field theories we make use of an important symmetry of SCET, called reparametrization invariance. In order to systematically study this symmetry, we construct operators that are invariant under reparametrization and we use them to find a minimal basis of operators that are homogeneous in the power counting. Complete basis of operators are constructed for pure glue operators for deep inelasting scattering at twist-4, for production of two and three jets from e+e- and for production of two jets via gluon fusion.

Full textThe Candida albicans genome displays a high tolerance to rearrangements, notably loss-ofheterozygosity (LOH) events. These events most often result from the repair of DNA double-strandbreaks (DSBs) and are known to play an important role in different aspects of C. albicans biology. To study the molecular mechanisms leading to LOH, we have combined an I-SceI meganuclease-dependent DSB-inducing system with a FACS-optimized reporter system of LOH. Our results show that expression of I-SceI leads to a dramatic increase in the frequency of LOH events, mainly gene conversion events. Characterization of cells having undergone a LOH led us to identify recessive lethal and deleterious alleles present in the heterozygous state in the genome of the C.albicans laboratory strain. These alleles influence the nature of the LOH events that are observed following a DSB. We also characterized the fidelity of the repair following an I-SceI-induced DNA DSB. This revealed unexpected complex recombination events occurring upon both break-induced replication and gene conversion with crossover repair events. In parallel, a collection of 564 over expression plasmids for genes involved in signaling pathways, genome integrity and cell wall integrity has been transformed in a C. albicans strainharboring the I-SceI-dependent DSB-inducing system and FACS-optimized LOH reporter. Analyses of the resulting transformants under conditions that allowed fro I-SceI expression or not, led to the identification of genes whose overexpression results either in an increase of the basal LOH rate or in areduction of the high LOH frequency associated to I-SceI expression

Full textAbstract: Scent marketing is an area of predicted growth, with almost endless possibilities. It can successfully be applied to products, premises, places and services. Yet, this thesis explores some of the challenges scent marketing is likely to encounter, with regard to that part of the population who get sick from exposure to smells and chemicals. The purpose of this dissertation is to initiate communication and provide some tangible examples on how scent marketers and people suffering from the condition sensory hyperreactivity can co-exist in the same environment.
This paper presents a theoretical framework for the use of scent marketing, and the condition sensory hyperreactivity. The empirical study is of a qualitative nature, conducted through the mean of telephone interviews, on a sample of individuals with the condition, contacted through a website forum.
The findings show that people with this type of condition are substantially limited in their daily lives, due to scented products and places, and would be even more so with a growing use of this type of marketing. The possibilities for marketers could be to address the wishes of the interviewees, and gain a new market. The limitations for scent marketing are primarily of legislative nature, but could also include negative reactions to the subject. In addition to people with sensory hyperreactivity, and potentially young children, no specific target group could be outlined unsuited for scent marketing. Specific fragrances and chemical components to be avoided could in large not be determined. The interviewees wish for fragrance-free hospitals, dentists, waiting rooms and public places. The respondents have suggested a number of measures for marketers and shop owners that would facilitate and enable them to partake in the market place of today.

Full textMy degree project begins with questions formulated around the ability, or inability to take and make space in the city and how taking place can create change. By staging (making a scene) using the strategies, taking care, being present, and taking space, I want to explore, make visible and set in motion shared place-making in our common rooms. I have started in seemingly* abandoned places and in temporary rooms: Because the seemingly abandoned only appears to be unused and can, with a little imagination, be made into what is needed for the moment. Because traces that are left behind become mysteries, possible futures and dreams of the adventures of others. Because the desire to take the stage sometimes requires moments of empty stages. Because the act of sharing also means taking turns. * With seemingly abandoned I mean places that sometimes appear unused, but are not. Places with traces of past activity and inspiration to future happenings.

The Internet of Things is an area that has been growing through the years and has raised a lot of interest in the industries. The improvements made in wireless communications and sensors/actuators has allowed the increase of Machine-to-Machine communications in the market. This evolution has been causing a continuous increasing of the number of Machine-to-Machine solutions along with the number of devices in those solutions. Due to this increase in the number of devices on Machine-to-Machine solutions, the complexity of managing these devices becomes more and more di cult. For this reason, there is a need to have a horizontal solution that allows the management of those devices. Currently, there are standards that enable device management in IoT/M2M solutions. The implementations available of these device management standards sometimes do not ful ll the needs of the current market in IoT. Consequently, this dissertation proposes a possible device management solution into an existing IoT platform, promoting interoperability between devices and their communication protocols.

The sense of smell is a mystery-and the human sense of smell is a particularly inscrutable one. Only in the last 25 years have scientists identified the molecules in our noses responsible for detecting odors, and since then, the unexpected discovery of a new family of olfactory detection molecules has complicated the story. When the complexities of the human brain, human motivation, and human variation are added to the mix, the question of what smells do to and for us becomes even more perplexing-and intriguing. Essayist and physician Lewis Thomas wrote that understanding the sense of smell "may not seem a profound enough problem to dominate all the life sciences, but it contains, piece by piece, all the mysteries." Scientists from all fields are coming together to solve these mysteries of olfaction, and their investigations are starting to reveal that the sense of smell can move us in ways that we aren't even always aware. While it's clear that scientists are far from closing the case on smell, it is also becoming increasingly obvious that the power of the human nose is nothing to sniff at.

Full textIntegrins are transmembrane glycoproteins involved in cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) adhesion and signal transduction. They participate in the migration and fusion of trophoblast giant cells (TGC) with uterine epithelial cells in bovine placentomes, and interact with tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), considered important regulators of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). MMPs are rate-limiting enzymes degrading ECM proteins during tissue remodeling around embryo implantation, pregnancy and parturition. Since integrins are considered to be responsible for the maintenance of the architecture within tissues and MMPs may also regulate degradation and reconstitution of ECM required for trophoblast invasion, we aimed to verify a potential relation of integrins with common placental alterations observed in cloned animals (SCNT). To verify the placental functionality, expression of placental lactogen (PL) and Ki-67 antigen was also assessed. Bovine placentomes were collected and divided into 3 groups: 1) early and 2) late gestation derived from natural mating (n=9) and 3) late gestational bovine clones (n=8), also divided into male clones (n=4) and female clones (n=4). All proteins were localized by indirect immunohistochemistry except for integrin subunits α6, β1, αV and β3 that were shown by immunofluorescence. The antibody specificity and protein expression were confirmed by Western blot. Expression of mRNA was evaluated using RT-PCR and quantitative Real Time PCR. Positive cells for laminin, TIMP-2, Ki-67 and placental lactogen were quantified for comparisons among groups. The protein of integrin receptor subunits α6 and β1 was observed in both cloned and non-cloned animals in the fetal and maternal stroma and at the basal membrane of maternal and fetal epithelial cells, co-localized with laminin and with collagen IV. The integrin receptor subunits αV and β3 were observed in the fetal and maternal stroma, co-localized with fibronectin. TIMP-2 was specifically and exclusively localized in TGC in the early and term gestation in both cloned and non-cloned animals. PL has shown the same localization of TIMP-2 in all analyzed samples. Statistically significant differences (p<0,05) between term gestation of non-cloned and cloned animals were observed comparing the mRNA expression of integrin β1 subunit and placental lactogen and the protein expression of laminin and TIMP-2. There were also statistically significant differences (p<0,05) between non-cloned and cloned animals in the number of laminin and placental lactogen positive cells. Despite some differences in integrin and ECM proteins expression, our results suggest that the interaction between integrins and their ECM ligands in term gestation is not a determinant for the survival rate of newborn cloned calves. However further studies are necessary to elucidate if integrins represent key elements in the early placentation of SCNT bovines. The differences found in the integrin and principally in the placental lactogen expression between female and male cloned calves suggests the influence of sex-chromosome associated genes or imprinting.

Full textRemote Explosives Scent Tracing (REST) is the concept of bringing the mine field to Mine Detection Dogs or Rats, instead of vice versa. This is done by collecting air or dust from minefields, and taking these samples to a laboratory environment, where they are subsequently analysed by the detection animals.
REST has previously proven to be very fast and cost effective, but one of the issues facing the method is that there is yet no reliable tool for sampling dust. In earlier sampling units, air has been collected in filters. However, the concentration of scents related to mines has been seen to be a million times higher in dust particles than in air sampled from above the ground. The aim of this project was to evaluate and improve a dust sampling prototype constructed in the beginning of 2010. The project was initiated in cooperation with the GICHD (Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian demining), and carried out in cooperation with APOPO (Anti-Personnel Landmines Detection Product Development).
During this project, information was gathered on the samplers that have previously been used for REST. A new prototype was made in Trondheim in cooperation with NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology). With this new sampler prototype, tests were made in a laboratory environment at NTNU as well as at APOPO’s test mine field in Morogoro, Tanzania. Several obstacles were faced, such as difficulties to test and evaluate the sampler during the rainy season, insufficient air supply for the prototype, and issues with the laboratory equipment in Morogoro. Due to this, the number of tests performed and the number of repetitions of each test was not as high as would have been desired.
The results of the information gathering and the tests are presented in this report, and the knowledge and experience gained resulted in several suggestions for improvements for the sampler prototype. A suggestion for a grid design that would cover the entire mouth piece, with a built-in distance to the suction inlet, in order to avoid both clogging of the grid and that too much dust is sucked in if the mouth piece touches the ground and a fully adjustable sampling unit. Several other recommendations are given that would reduce cross contamination risks and improve ergonomics and other aspects of the sampler prototype.

Full textThis thesis aims to investigate the relationships between theatrical props, actors and sound engineers through the posthumanistic perspective of agential realism. I also explore the phenomena that emerge from these relationships. What happens when sensors are implemented in the prop in order for the actors themselves to trigger certain sound effects from the stage? To investigate this, I have developed prototypes of theater props with sensors and thus in some sense given the objects a voice of their own. This contributes to them participating in the dialogue with the people in a performance, while at the same time changing the interplay between actors and the sound engineer. Through the different iterations of the process, the division between subject and object has become increasingly unclear, just like the one between the different roles. In some sense, the actor becomes an audio engineer, as both the prop and the audio engineer in turn become actors.

Full textHomologous recombination is a DNA repair mechanism highly regulated in higher eukaryotes. In their meiotic cells, where DNA double-stranded breaks are programmed, the crossing-over pathway of homologous recombination, which generates new gene combinations, is limited in activity and genomic distribution. In somatic cells, illegitimate recombination, which mainly ensures DNA double-strand repair, limits the targeted integration of transgenes by homologous recombination. Biotechnology companies aim to master homologous recombination to control on the one hand the genomic mixing that occurs during meiosis, and on other hand, the integration of transgenes into the genome. This study focuses on the development of tools to achieve these two objectives. To increase genome mixing occurring during meiosis, a version of the OsDmc1b promoter active in maize meiotic cells was isolated. Then, plants over-expressing the ZmSpo11.1 gene under control of this promoter have been developed to obtain potentially hyper-recombinant lines. If ZmSPO11.1 overexpression increases the crossing over rate, it can be used by breeders to accelerate the introgression of alleles of interest into elite varieties. For the establishment of a gene targeting technique, two strategies based on the use of the I-SceI meganuclease were tested. These approaches involved the use of three elements which are: a target locus containing the cleavage site of I-SceI, a repair template and the sequence encoding I-SceI (or ISceI::GR). The first strategy, consisting of the retransformation of target locus lines with the repair template and I-SceI, does not seem workable because no gene targeting events were isolated. The second strategy, based on the assembly of the three components by crossing, is more promising. Despite the low activity of I-SceI::GR, homologous recombination events were observed in leaf tissues of certain plants. Embryogenic callus, developed from these plants, permitted the regeneration of plants with gene targeting events. This work opens new perspectives in the development of controlled GMO production

This thesis aims to create a better branding message for the OLIVITA Artisan by finding specific scents that are closely aligned with its marketing strategy for their future product line, to reassure the existing brand image and increase its competency in the market. In order to find the scents that are aligned with OLIVITA Artisan's existing brand image, an edited version of the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET), a patented market research tool that has been proven successful in eliciting the conscious and more importantly the unconscious thoughts by exploring people's non-literal or metaphoric expressions, was applied for the "Mediterranean life" concept among a convenience sample. The transcriptions of the interviews were analyzed, relevant statements were extracted and the strongest statements were selected and logically grouped to be able to identify the key themes in consumer's mind by Voice of the Customer analysis. The themes were also used to create short stories. The results shaped the scent recommendations for the OLIVITA Artisan, including four pure, three conceptual scents that are closely aligned with its brand image.

Search engines make vast amounts of information available to Internet users. Two types of tasks users engage in using search engines are closed-ended and open-ended. For closed-ended tasks, individuals have narrow objectives that require finding specific results. For open-ended tasks, individuals only have general objectives that require finding as much relevant information as possible about a topic, which can be difficult when large numbers of both relevant and irrelevant results are returned from a query. This can also leave users in a state of information overload. Some search engines have incorporated information visualization techniques (combining cognitive senses with visual cues that allow for better understanding the information) to facilitate browsing through results in order to reduce information overload. However, there is little research that identifies which visual cues are the most desirable for the presentation of search results. According to information foraging theory, cues that have strong scents will help users find information faster. In this study, we investigate the effects of augmenting visualizations with animation as a powerful scent to help users more easily identify relevant information in search engine results. This study employs cognitive fit theory to study the effect of different information formats on users' performance in completing the two different tasks. Overall, we find evidence that the effectiveness of cues such as animation is task-dependent. For example, we find that visualizations with animation are less effective than a standard textual display for subjects performing closed-ended web search tasks. The results of this study have strong implications for integrating appropriate cues into visualizations in order to help people find information.

Full textScreening is recommended to reduce both incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC). Currently, many Countries organize population screening programs based on fecal occult blood test (FOBT). In Emilia-Romagna (Italy), since 2005, FOBT immunochemical version (FIT) is performed every two years on people aged between 50 and 69 years. Then, colonoscopy is carried out on FIT-positives. Unfortunately, FIT shows a high number of false positives (about 65%), mainly due to non-tumoral bleedings, leading to many negative (without tumors) colonoscopies. The use of an economic and easy-to-use method to check FIT-positives would improve effectiveness of the screening, reducing also the costs for National Health Service. This work shows the outcomes of the clinical validation protocol, started in 2016, of a patented device composed by a core of nanostructured gas sensors. This device, SCENT A1, was designed to identify the presence of CRC and pre-cancerous lesions by detecting the fecal volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with a non-invasive, in-vitro and low-cost analysis. Feces are, in fact, affected by tumor volatile biomarkers, produced by cellular peroxidation and metabolic alterations. The clinical validation protocol consisted in the analysis, with SCENT A1, of fecal samples of FIT-positive subjects, using colonoscopy as a gold-standard. A total of 398 samples has been analyzed by means SCENT A1 and with advanced machine learning techniques (PCA e SVM). The samples were initially analyzed by dividing them into two macro-categories according to their health: healthy (individuals without any type of tumor lesion) and sick (individuals with high and low risk adenomas and/or carcinomas) obtaining sensitivity and specificity respectively 84.1% and 82.4%. The extrapolated VPPs and VPNs were 72% and 91% respectively. Subsequently, these samples were analyzed by dividing them into three categories: healthy, low risk adenomas, high risk adenomas and carcinomas and obtaining a sensitivity and specificity of 80.2% and 94.4% respectively. Extrapolated VPPs and VPNs were 78% and 95% respectively. A multicenter study will be performed in 2020, to assess the accuracy of the test on a population basis.
