Abstract:

Abstract:
Aim:This study aimed to investigate the experiences of children and young people being educated in residential special schools, with a particular focus on how their rights and wellbeing were being promoted by their schools.Method:The study was conducted using participatory research principles and aimed to develop techniques and approaches that would support the inclusion of all children.Findings:The findings indicated that the techniques developed during this study helped to provide insight into the experiences of pupils with a wide range of special needs, and facilitated their voices. The piloting of a method that integrated ethnographic observation techniques with checklists adopted from the SCERTS framework (developed by Prizant and colleagues) provided important insights into the experiences and preferences of children with the greatest learning and communication needs, and is an approach worthy of further development.Limitations:The study was conducted over a very short time frame, one academic term, which influenced the time available to refine techniques and work with our young researchers’ group. Whilst every residential special school in England was invited to participate, the sample was based on those schools that volunteered, many with good and outstanding Ofsted ratings. Therefore, the sample may not be fully representative of the range of experiences provided by residential special schools in England. Conclusions:The development of specific techniques to facilitate an understanding of the views and experiences of children who experience significant challenges in communication is possible. The knowledge, skills and expertise of educational psychologists and other professionals can be harnessed to respond creatively to this challenge and it is important to acknowledge the reciprocal value of professional practice and research skills.

Abstract:
AbstractBackground: Kodály approach is one of widely used methods in music education and music therapy. The method is based on singing activities that could facilitate young children’s social development. Thus, the application of Kodály approach may be appropriate to enhance the joint attention behaviors of children with autism. Objective: We examined the joint attention of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) during Kodály-based music experiences. Methods: The A-B-C-B single-case design was employed to investigate the effectiveness of Kodály-based music experiences on joint attention behaviors of three children, ranging from 7.8 to 11.5 years of age, with autism who had manifested joint attention problems. The experimental sessions consisted of baseline condition (A), group intervention (B), and individual invention session (C). The SCERTS assessment process (SAP) was used to measure joint attention behaviors. The findings were presented using visual inspection. Results: During baseline sessions, the three participants rarely engaged in joint attention with others. Their behaviors were stable during the first three sessions, with mean occurrence of 5, 9.3, and 4. In the course of the music intervention, they positively responded to the intervention. The frequencies of their behaviors continuously increased from the first group intervention sessions until the second group intervention sessions. Finally, the second group intervention sessions showed that most of the data points were above the mean of all previous sessions, with mean occurrence of 43.8, 34.1, and 18.8.Conclusion: The Kodály approach was found one of useful methods in music education that can apply to music therapy to enhance joint attention behaviors of the children with autism. The children were able to learn how to engage in a group setting through singing activities, folk music, and solfège learning.

Abstract:
Ambient scents are being increasingly used in different service environments. While there is emerging research on the effects of scents, almost nothing is known about the long-term effects of consumers’ repeated exposure to ambient scents in a service environment as prior studies on ambient scents have been lab or field studies examining short-term effects of scent exposure only. Addressing this limitation, we examine the short- and long-term effects of ambient scents. Specifically, we present a conceptual framework for the short- and long-term effects of nonconsciously processed ambient scent in olfactory-rich servicescapes. We empirically test this framework with the help of two large-scale field experiments, conducted in collaboration with a major German railway company, in which consumers were exposed to a pleasant, nonconsciously processed scent. The first experiment demonstrates ambient scent’s positive short-term effects on consumers’ service perceptions. The second experiment—a longitudinal study conducted over a 4-month period—examines scent’s long-term effects on consumers’ reactions and demonstrates that the effects persist even when the scent has been removed from the servicescape.

Abstract:
Marketing has started exploring ambient scents’ diverse effects and the psychological mechanisms through which they affect consumer behaviour. Recent research focuses on ambient scents’ perceived temperature’s impact on consumer behaviour. In this research, we first replicate prior research by showing that consumers exposed to a warm (vs. cool) ambient scent prefer premium over regular brands – also in an FMCG context. Broadening the perspective, we show that ambient scent’s effect can be generalized to general elections. Specifically, we present initial evidence that the diffusion of a warm (vs. cool) ambient scent nudges potential voters to opt for right-wing instead of moderate political parties. We conjecture that the effect of perceived scent temperature on brand preferences and voting behaviour is a symbolic way of compensating for temperature perceptions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
‘Scent’ has a tremendous influence on the way people shop and relate to brands. Branding has always been about establishing emotional ties between the brand and the customer. By influencing the senses, brands can establish a stronger and longer lasting emotional connection with the customer and finally be memorable. While research doesn't clearly point to pleasant smells boosting sales, stores are embracing scent marketing as a way to create exciting store ambience. The present study is an attempt to examine the impact of ambient Scent on the customers’ and employees’ of organized retail stores.
