Abstract:
Abstract: The increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) puts pressure on the healthcare system. Parent-mediated interventions are an interesting alternative to answer the needs of families having a toddler with a diagnosis or a suspicion of ASD. However, few researchers have looked at parents’ experience during parent-mediated interventions even though parents are the main actors of these interventions. This sequential explanatory mixed study aims to evaluate a 12-week parent-mediated intervention for young children with a suspicion of ASD aged between 12 and 30 months by considering both parents’ and children’s outcomes. Methods: For the quantitative part (crossover randomized controlled trial), the 19 parent-child dyads were randomized either in the Intervention group or the Waitlist group (participants in this group had to wait three months before getting access to the intervention). Data were collected through questionnaires and direct observation three to four times depending on the group allocation. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics as well as between and within group comparisons. For the qualitative part (exploratory), semi-directed interviews conducted with a subsample of six participants were analyzed thematically. Results: The program was globally highly appreciated (median score = 3.625/4). Specifically, there was a significant positive effect of the intervention on parent-child dyadic engagement (p = .012; effect size = .51). Furthermore, there was a normalization of children’s cognitive (p = .010; effect size = .57) and motor abilities (p = .071; effect size = .38) after the 12-week program. The near absence of effect on parental well-being could be fixed by targeting specifically parental support rather than focusing on their skills development. Conclusion: The parent-mediated intervention brings promising benefits on the proximal outcome (parent-child interactions) and, to a lesser extent, on distal outcomes (children development, parental well-being and social validity). Still, the intervention should be adapted to better answer parental needs.

Be struktūrinės konstrukcinės sandaros neįmanoma įsivaizduoti net elementariausio architektūros objekto. Šiuolaikinėje architektūroje struktūriškumas yra vie¬nas plastinės išraiškos elementų. This is a work of complex design where a sense of ensemble and harmony is very important. While creating the parts of the complex, unfailing resources of bionic forms were the base for it. Improvised forms of animate nature enable to create unusual objects which have specific stylistics, tectonics, rhythmic and character. Exactly nature is the unfailing source of new ideas according to both functional and aesthetic points of view. Light constructions and dynamic bionic forms integrate the celebration facilities into a natural environment organically. The celebration facilities are a seasonal one; that is why an idea of portable constructions was chosen. Thanks to this a seasonal space for entertainment and recreation is formed. Even an elementary object of architecture cannot be imagined without a structural constructional framework. In modern architecture, structure is one of the elements of plastic expression (Mogilnickas (1995) Techninės estetikos pradmenys / Basics of Technical Aesthetics [in Lithuanian]). Portable metal constructions and modern textile architecture form an impression of lightness and provide the construction with an exceptional character. Abstract:
An ambient odour of anise was used in a context-dependent memory study with three different memory tasks targeting both declarative and non-declarative memory functions. Declarative memory was assessed by means of two episodic memory tests; recall of a prose text and a complex figure. Priming was used to assess the non-declarative memory with word fragment completion. Memory was tested immediately and after 48 hours. The results showed a significant main effect of context (odour or not) for all three tests in favour of the olfactory context. In addition, a significant main effect of time was observed for all three tests and a significant interaction effect between context and time for the priming test were observed. This interaction showed that the priming effect was equal in size across both conditions at immediate testing, although when the odour was reinstated at the delayed test the results showed larger priming relative the control condition.

Abstract:
ARTIST My work is a melding of mythology and personal experience. Growing up in the harsh desert of the Coachella Valley, I found refuge in music and art. My desire to become a drummer has leaded me to create a persona called Baby Lamb. Baby Lamb is a symbolic representation, as well as a physical manifestation of this desire and she is slowly evolving, eventually becoming my alter ego. Currently, the artwork that I create is a chapter in the life story of Baby Lamb. BABY LAMB Baby Lamb's art shows have included a collection of relics that have been made into a visual documentary of the artist's evolutionary presence. With guidance from Mama Lamb, Baby Lamb's ethereal mentor and ultimate drum Goddess; Baby Lamb is expressed through a variety of drum artifacts challenged by some of the most prominent drummers of our lifetime, John Bonham, Buddy Rich, and Jon Theodore. MAMA LAMB Mama Lamb is the original drum Goddess. She is a derivative of ancient rhythm masters from every spectrum of the universe and into the unknown. Mama Lamb is a symbol personified through earthly materials such as clay, glass, and real drum paraphernalia. Through these objects, Mama Lamb is able to help guide Baby Lamb into her authenticate self.

Abstract:
"Behind The Scenes" is a creative, non-fiction thesis that delights and amazes the reader from behind the scenes of a funeral home. Often, funeral homes and funeral directors are criticized via newspapers, television broadcasts, and magazine articles. But, seldom is a reader allowed to enjoy tales from a funeral director's perspective. So, Gary Schneider, a licensed funeral director and freelance writer, opens the doors and welcomes the reader inside his Victorian funeral home, Rudy-Rowland, the second oldest funeral firm in Kentucky. This time, however, the public is allowed past the viewing room, as the reader gets into the hearts and the minds of Schneider and his staff. From a comedy of a cat funeral to the seriousness of Schneider burying a best friend, the thesis could be considered a bitter-sweet compend of tantalizing tales. Said Dr. Frank Steele of the work, "I especially like the way the organization yields up a comedy-pathos polarization. I expect that being a funeral director gives your life a certain thrust that alternates between extremes." And Schneider shares those extremes with his readers. From tears of overwhelming grief to unbelievable comedy, Schneider attempts to entertain the reader while sharing the seriousness of the business. Undoubtedly, few have ever read, shared, or heard such honest, straightforward accounts from behind the scenes of a funeral home. Therefore, it is Schneider's intent to illustrate to the reader that a good funeral director must understand people and know how to be sympathetic. But a good funeral director must also know how to live, love, and laugh before he can properly prepare himself to bury the dead. Now, if you will, let's go "Behind The Scenes."

Fragrances in consumer products have become a contested topic in daily life. Workplace fragrance policies problematize fragrances, which, for many people, are normal aspects of consumer products. This mixed-method dissertation focuses on employees in a large non-industrial workplace with a fragrance-free policy. It examines employee reactions to a policy that requests behavioral changes based on claims that everyday consumption of fragranced products may be harmful to employee health. In order to develop an understanding of how and to what extent fragrances and indoor air quality are problematized in the workplace, I engage a number of different constructs from environmental and consumer sociology. The dissertation expands upon constructs of contested illness (Brown, Kroll-Smith, & Gunter, 2000; Phillimore, Moffatt, Hudson, & Downey, 2000; Shriver & Webb, 2009); framings of environments in bodies (Kroll-Smith & Kelley, 2008); lay assessments of health impacts (Burton-Jeangros, 2011; Collins, 2010; Heikkinen, Patja, & Jallinoja, 2010; O'Sullivan & Stakelum, 2004; Scammell, Senier, Darrah-Okike, Brown, & Santos, 2009) and understandings of the role of scents in social life (Largey & Watson, 1972; Low, 2006; Synnott, 1991). My findings show that a majority of participants understand fragrance impacts through an individual health frame, as an allergy, that locates the problems associated with fragrance within the bodies of specific individuals who exhibit symptoms due to fragrance exposures. While this orientation has had positive impacts on the implementation of the policy and reducing corresponding impacts on those who are Fragrance Sensitive, the degree to which fragrances have been problematized is limited by understandings of fragrance impacts as allergies. The limiting framework of fragrance sensitivity as allergy has practical efficacy because it helps employees to connect with the idea that fragrances cause health issues for some individuals. However, it also stymies assessments and connections to potential broader environmental health impacts of fragrances in part because allergens such as pollen are generally viewed as benign and only problematic to the anomalous individuals who experience reactions. Limitations of the framework are reinforced by established moral and cultural assessments of good and bad fragrances and the appropriate use of fragrances (Low, 2006; Synnott, 1991). This dissertation examines what happens when people are confronted with information that the industrial traces associated with their consumption practices - in this case wearing and using fragranced products on their bodies and in their work environments - may be contributing to negative health outcomes for their coworkers. This study is the first to analyze the social dimensions of the use of synthetic fragrances in connection to environmental health impacts in the context of everyday life. The findings have relevance for other organizations considering regulation of fragrances as well as for efforts to use health rationales to encourage changes in consumption practices

Abstract:

Abstract:
Computer vision algorithms have played a pivotal role in commercial video surveillance systems for a number of years. However, a common weakness among these systems is their inability to handle crowded scenes. In this thesis, we have developed algorithms that overcome some of the challenges encountered in videos of crowded environments such as sporting events, religious festivals, parades, concerts, train stations, airports, and malls. We adopt a top-down approach by first performing a global-level analysis that locates dynamically distinct crowd regions within the video. This knowledge is then employed in the detection of abnormal behaviors and tracking of individual targets within crowds. In addition, the thesis explores the utility of contextual information necessary for persistent tracking and re-acquisition of objects in crowded scenes. For the global-level analysis, a framework based on Lagrangian Particle Dynamics is proposed to segment the scene into dynamically distinct crowd regions or groupings. For this purpose, the spatial extent of the video is treated as a phase space of a time-dependent dynamical system in which transport from one region of the phase space to another is controlled by the optical flow. Next, a grid of particles is advected forward in time through the phase space using a numerical integration to generate a "flow map". The flow map relates the initial positions of particles to their final positions. The spatial gradients of the flow map are used to compute a Cauchy Green Deformation tensor that quantifies the amount by which the neighboring particles diverge over the length of the integration. The maximum eigenvalue of the tensor is used to construct a forward Finite Time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) field that reveals the Attracting Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS). The same process is repeated by advecting the particles backward in time to obtain a backward FTLE field that reveals the repelling LCS. The attracting and repelling LCS are the time dependent invariant manifolds of the phase space and correspond to the boundaries between dynamically distinct crowd flows. The forward and backward FTLE fields are combined to obtain one scalar field that is segmented using a watershed segmentation algorithm to obtain the labeling of distinct crowd-flow segments. Next, abnormal behaviors within the crowd are localized by detecting changes in the number of crowd-flow segments over time. Next, the global-level knowledge of the scene generated by the crowd-flow segmentation is used as an auxiliary source of information for tracking an individual target within a crowd. This is achieved by developing a scene structure-based force model. This force model captures the notion that an individual, when moving in a particular scene, is subjected to global and local forces that are functions of the layout of that scene and the locomotive behavior of other individuals in his or her vicinity. The key ingredients of the force model are three floor fields that are inspired by research in the field of evacuation dynamics; namely, Static Floor Field (SFF), Dynamic Floor Field (DFF), and Boundary Floor Field (BFF). These fields determine the probability of moving from one location to the next by converting the long-range forces into local forces. The SFF specifies regions of the scene that are attractive in nature, such as an exit location. The DFF, which is based on the idea of active walker models, corresponds to the virtual traces created by the movements of nearby individuals in the scene. The BFF specifies influences exhibited by the barriers within the scene, such as walls and no-entry areas. By combining influence from all three fields with the available appearance information, we are able to track individuals in high-density crowds. The results are reported on real-world sequences of marathons and railway stations that contain thousands of people. A comparative analysis with respect to an appearance-based mean shift tracker is also conducted by generating the ground truth. The result of this analysis demonstrates the benefit of using floor fields in crowded scenes. The occurrence of occlusion is very frequent in crowded scenes due to a high number of interacting objects. To overcome this challenge, we propose an algorithm that has been developed to augment a generic tracking algorithm to perform persistent tracking in crowded environments. The algorithm exploits the contextual knowledge, which is divided into two categories consisting of motion context (MC) and appearance context (AC). The MC is a collection of trajectories that are representative of the motion of the occluded or unobserved object. These trajectories belong to other moving individuals in a given environment. The MC is constructed using a clustering scheme based on the Lyapunov Characteristic Exponent (LCE), which measures the mean exponential rate of convergence or divergence of the nearby trajectories in a given state space. Next, the MC is used to predict the location of the occluded or unobserved object in a regression framework. It is important to note that the LCE is used for measuring divergence between a pair of particles while the FTLE field is obtained by computing the LCE for a grid of particles. The appearance context (AC) of a target object consists of its own appearance history and appearance information of the other objects that are occluded. The intent is to make the appearance descriptor of the target object more discriminative with respect to other unobserved objects, thereby reducing the possible confusion between the unobserved objects upon re-acquisition. This is achieved by learning the distribution of the intra-class variation of each occluded object using all of its previous observations. In addition, a distribution of inter-class variation for each target-unobservable object pair is constructed. Finally, the re-acquisition decision is made using both the MC and the AC.

Abstract:
In the last decades, the olfactory system fell under the microscope of scientific and philosophical analysis. In virtue of this research, we gained a better knowledge of the functioning of the olfactory system. However, a detailed analysis of the affective dimensions regulated by the sense of smell, able to weave together the threads spun by different disciplines is still missing. Indeed, my thesis aims at providing a comprehensive framework of the affective power of scents. To carry out my philosophical analysis I employed an empirically informed methodology. I interconnected a rigorous examination of research carried out in cognitive science and neuroscience with phenomenological analysis gathered from first-person experiences, literary analyses, and several case studies gathered from cultural history and ethnography. To guide my research, I decided to rely on an affective-enactive approach. In virtue of this dynamical model, I was able to emphasize the role played by embodied interactions with the world in the unfolding of our perceptual experience. This vantage point allowed me to regard olfactory experience as inseparable from the organism experiencing it. The physiological state of the organism, its motor actions, its dispositions and expectations, the actions performed, the affective states, the contextual cues, are all elements that crucially contribute to the emergence of the olfactory experience. I argued that smells are not ephemeral fragments of the phenomenological world experienced by the organism. Nor are they in the business of detecting chemical properties floating around the subject. Rather, smells are constrained and shaped both by the situation in which the subject is immersed and by its previous experience. As a result, they are endowed with a personal meaning based on the history of the organism experiencing them. They help us to attune to changes happening in the chemical environment that surrounds us by disclosing specific modalities of interaction, highlighting the affective relevance of certain affordances, and prompting specific states of action readiness: they support the organism in structuring a context relevant to its needs and preferences. Smells, therefore, come out as particular perspectives the organism adopts towards the world: as affective self-organizing patterns that dynamically unfold as the agent interact with its surroundings. By adopting this stance, I was able to address several problems regarding the nature of perception and emotion.

In producing the historic monument through attention to a neatly defined prescription of privileged concerns, architectural scholarship yields an effluvium of discarded issues proscribed by the conventions of scholarly tradition. This study proposes that a 'monument' arises from the unstable dialectic between spatial practices and history. By privileging the monument as document of history, scholarship elides the spatial practices and the experiences of architecture's occupants. This study explores the implications of instating these experiences and spatial practices to the 'scene' of architectural discourse using the moving image as representational tool.

Abstract:
The problem of understanding road scenes has been on the fore-front in the computer vision community for the last couple of years. This enables autonomous systems to navigate and understand the surroundings in which it operates. It involves reconstructing the scene and estimating the objects present in it, such as ‘vehicles’, ‘road’, ‘pavements’ and ‘buildings’. This thesis focusses on these aspects and proposes solutions to address them. First, we propose a solution to generate a dense semantic map from multiple street-level images. This map can be imagined as the bird’s eye view of the region with associated semantic labels for ten’s of kilometres of street level data. We generate the overhead semantic view from street level images. This is in contrast to existing approaches using satellite/overhead imagery for classification of urban region, allowing us to produce a detailed semantic map for a large scale urban area. Then we describe a method to perform large scale dense 3D reconstruction of road scenes with associated semantic labels. Our method fuses the depth-maps in an online fashion, generated from the stereo pairs across time into a global 3D volume, in order to accommodate arbitrarily long image sequences. The object class labels estimated from the street level stereo image sequence are used to annotate the reconstructed volume. Then we exploit the scene structure in object class labelling by performing inference over the meshed representation of the scene. By performing labelling over the mesh we solve two issues: Firstly, images often have redundant information with multiple images describing the same scene. Solving these images separately is slow, where our method is approximately a magnitude faster in the inference stage compared to normal inference in the image domain. Secondly, often multiple images, even though they describe the same scene result in inconsistent labelling. By solving a single mesh, we remove the inconsistency of labelling across the images. Also our mesh based labelling takes into account of the object layout in the scene, which is often ambiguous in the image domain, thereby increasing the accuracy of object labelling. Finally, we perform labelling and structure computation through a hierarchical robust PN Markov Random Field defined on voxels and super-voxels given by an octree. This allows us to infer the 3D structure and the object-class labels in a principled manner, through bounded approximate minimisation of a well defined and studied energy functional. In this thesis, we also introduce two object labelled datasets created from real world data. The 15 kilometre Yotta Labelled dataset consists of 8,000 images per camera view of the roadways of the United Kingdom with a subset of them annotated with object class labels and the second dataset is comprised of ground truth object labels for the publicly available KITTI dataset. Both the datasets are available publicly and we hope will be helpful to the vision research community.

Abstract: Scent marketing is an area of predicted growth, with almost endless possibilities. It can successfully be applied to products, premises, places and services. Yet, this thesis explores some of the challenges scent marketing is likely to encounter, with regard to that part of the population who get sick from exposure to smells and chemicals. The purpose of this dissertation is to initiate communication and provide some tangible examples on how scent marketers and people suffering from the condition sensory hyperreactivity can co-exist in the same environment.

This paper presents a theoretical framework for the use of scent marketing, and the condition sensory hyperreactivity. The empirical study is of a qualitative nature, conducted through the mean of telephone interviews, on a sample of individuals with the condition, contacted through a website forum.

The findings show that people with this type of condition are substantially limited in their daily lives, due to scented products and places, and would be even more so with a growing use of this type of marketing. The possibilities for marketers could be to address the wishes of the interviewees, and gain a new market. The limitations for scent marketing are primarily of legislative nature, but could also include negative reactions to the subject. In addition to people with sensory hyperreactivity, and potentially young children, no specific target group could be outlined unsuited for scent marketing. Specific fragrances and chemical components to be avoided could in large not be determined. The interviewees wish for fragrance-free hospitals, dentists, waiting rooms and public places. The respondents have suggested a number of measures for marketers and shop owners that would facilitate and enable them to partake in the market place of today.

In this thesis, we address the problem of panoramic scene construction in which a single image covering the entire visible area of the scene is constructed from an aerial image video. In the literature, there are several algorithms developed for construction of panoramic scene of a video sequence. These algorithms can be categorized as feature based and featureless algorithms. In this thesis, we concentrate on the feature based algorithms and comparison of these algorithms is performed for aerial videos. The comparison is performed on video sequences captured by non-stationary cameras, whose optical axis does not have to be the same. In addition, the matching and tracking performances of the algorithms are separately analyzed, their advantages-disadvantages are presented and several modifications are proposed.

Abstract:
Abstract This thesis focuses on describing scenes by using qualitative spatial relations. Not all the spatial relations are suitable for describing the environment. For this reason a selection will first be made of the most appropriate relations for this task. Given these relations, descriptions for a number of the scenes will be generated. Based on these descriptions, patterns will be extracted. These patterns guide the design of a model which is able to generate new scenes with similar qualitative description. Finally some experiments will show the results of the model for different inputs.

Abstract:
This thesis builds on the observation that robots, like humans, do not have enough experience to handle all situations from the start. Therefore they need tools to cope with new situations, unknown scenes and unknown objects. In particular, this thesis addresses objects. How can a robot realize what objects are if it looks at a scene and has no knowledge about objects? How can it recover from situations where its hypotheses about what it sees are wrong? Even if it has built up experience in form of learned objects, there will be situations where it will be uncertain or mistaken, and will therefore still need the ability to correct errors. Much of our daily lives involves interactions with objects, and the same will be true robots existing among us. Apart from being able to identify individual objects, the robot will therefore need to manipulate them. Throughout the thesis, different aspects of how to deal with these questions is addressed. The focus is on the problem of a robot automatically partitioning a scene into its constituting objects. It is assumed that the robot does not know about specific objects, and is therefore considered inexperienced. Instead a method is proposed that generates object hypotheses given visual input, and then enables the robot to recover from erroneous hypotheses. This is done by the robot drawing from a human's experience, as well as by enabling it to interact with the scene itself and monitoring if the observed changes are in line with its current beliefs about the scene's structure. Furthermore, the task of object manipulation for unknown objects is explored. This is also used as a motivation why the scene partitioning problem is essential to solve. Finally aspects of monitoring the outcome of a manipulation is investigated by observing the evolution of flexible objects in both static and dynamic scenes. All methods that were developed for this thesis have been tested and evaluated on real robotic platforms. These evaluations show the importance of having a system capable of recovering from errors and that the robot can take advantage of human experience using just simple commands.

Abstract:
The framework of this thesis is volume graphics. It addresses two important issues in volume graphics, namely modelling and rendering complex scenes composed of objects defined by volumetric datasets. The main contributions of this thesis are: A new modelling scheme for volumetric scenes, called TROVE A rendering engine associated to TROVE that incorporates three efficient multi-volume rendering algorithms based on the most commonly-used approaches for single-volume rendering A parallel implementation of a multi-volume rendering algorithm on distributed memory architectures. The thesis proposes a new structured framework for the issues of modelling and rendering of volumetric scenes. It changes the emphasis from 'how we display volumetric data' to 'how we use volumetric data to create images'. This transition is important for the development of volume graphics as a viable alternative or complement to traditional surface graphics. The foundation of this work lies in an assessment of the state-of-the-art in the field. This is done through a thorough review of volume visualisation and of parallel processing used for volume visualisation. Parts of this thesis have been presented at the First Eurographics Workshop on Parallel Processing for Graphics and Visualisation 1996 (Bristol), the Sixteenth Eurographics Conference - UK Chapter 1995 (Leeds), and the International Workshop on Volume Graphics 1999 (Swansea); and published in Computer Graphics Forum volume 18 (2), 1999 and as a chapter in a book on Volume Graphics by Springer Verlag.

In the last decade, the topic of automated surveillance has become very important in the computer vision community. Especially important is the protection of critical transportation places and infrastructure like airport and railway stations. As a step in that direction, we consider the problem of detecting abandoned objects in a crowded scene. Assuming that the scene is being captured through a mid-field static camera, our approach consists of segmenting the foreground from the background and then using a change analyzer to detect any objects which meet certain criteria. In this thesis, we describe a background model and a method of bootstrapping that model in the presence of foreign objects in the foreground. We then use a Markov Random Field formulation to segment the foreground in image frames sampled periodically from the video camera. We use a change analyzer to detect foreground blobs that remain static through the scene and based on certain rules decide if the blob could be a potentially abandoned object.

Modeling visual scenes is one of the fundamental tasks of computer vision. Whereas tremendous efforts have been devoted to video analysis in past decades, most prior work focuses on specific tasks, leading to dedicated methods to solve them. This PhD thesis instead aims to derive a probabilistic generative model that coherently integrates different aspects, notably appearance, motion, and the interaction between them. Specifically, this model considers each video as a composite of dynamic layers, each associated with a covering domain, an appearance template, and a flow describing its motion. These layers change dynamically following the associated flows, and are combined into video frames according to a Z-order that specifies their relative depth-order. To describe these layers and their dynamic changes, three major components are incorporated: (1) An appearance model describes the generative process of the pixel values of a video layer. This model, via the combination of a probabilistic patch manifold and a conditional Markov random field, is able to express rich local details while maintaining global coherence. (2) A motion model captures the motion pattern of a layer through a new concept called geometric flow that originates from differential geometric analysis. A geometric flow unifies the trajectory-based representation and the notion of geometric transformation to represent the collective dynamic behaviors persisting over time. (3) A partial Z-order specifies the relative depth order between layers. Here, through the unique correspondence between equivalent classes of partial orders and consistent choice functions, a distribution over the spaces of partial orders is established, and inference can thus be performed thereon. The development of these models leads to significant challenges in probabilistic modeling and inference that need new techniques to address. We studied two important problems: (1) Both the appearance model and the motion model rely on mixture modeling to capture complex distributions. In a dynamic setting, the components parameters and the number of components in a mixture model can change over time. While the use of Dirichlet processes (DPs) as priors allows indefinite number of components, incorporating temporal dependencies between DPs remains a nontrivial issue, theoretically and practically. Our research on this problem leads to a new construction of dependent DPs, enabling various forms of dynamic variations for nonparametric mixture models by harnessing the connections between Poisson and Dirichlet processes. (2) The inference of partial Z-order from a video needs a method to sample from the posterior distribution of partial orders. A key challenge here is that the underlying space of partial orders is disconnected, meaning that one may not be able to make local updates without violating the combinatorial constraints for partial orders. We developed a novel sampling method to tackle this problem, which dynamically introduces virtual states as bridges to connect between different parts of the space, implicitly resulting in an ergodic Markov chain over an augmented space. With this generative model of visual scenes, many vision problems can be readily solved through inference performed on the model. Empirical experiments demonstrate that this framework yields promising results on a series of practical tasks, including video denoising and inpainting, collective motion analysis, and semantic scene understanding.

Teki, S. "Cognitive analysis of complex acoustic scenes." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1413017/.

Abstract:
Natural auditory scenes consist of a rich variety of temporally overlapping sounds that originate from multiple sources and locations and are characterized by distinct acoustic features. It is an important biological task to analyze such complex scenes and extract sounds of interest. The thesis addresses this question, also known as the “cocktail party problem” by developing an approach based on analysis of a novel stochastic signal contrary to deterministic narrowband signals used in previous work. This low-level signal, known as the Stochastic Figure-Ground (SFG) stimulus captures the spectrotemporal complexity of natural sound scenes and enables parametric control of stimulus features. In a series of experiments based on this stimulus, I have investigated specific behavioural and neural correlates of human auditory figure-ground segregation. This thesis is presented in seven sections. Chapter 1 reviews key aspects of auditory processing and existing models of auditory segregation. Chapter 2 presents the principles of the techniques used including psychophysics, modeling, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Magnetoencephalography (MEG). Experimental work is presented in the following chapters and covers figure-ground segregation behaviour (Chapter 3), modeling of the SFG stimulus based on a temporal coherence model of auditory perceptual organization (Chapter 4), analysis of brain activity related to detection of salient targets in the SFG stimulus using fMRI (Chapter 5), and MEG respectively (Chapter 6). Finally, Chapter 7 concludes with a general discussion of the results and future directions for research. Overall, this body of work emphasizes the use of stochastic signals for auditory scene analysis and demonstrates an automatic, highly robust segregation mechanism in the auditory system that is sensitive to temporal correlations across frequency channels.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a Visual Scene Change Detector(VSCD) system which is a system which involves four parts, image retrieval, image registration, image change detection and panorama creation. Two prestudies are conducted in order to find a proposed image registration method and a image retrieval method. The two found methods are then combined with a proposed image registration method and a proposed panorama creation method to form the proposed VSCD. The image retrieval prestudy evaluates a SIFT related method with a bag of words related method and finds the SIFT related method to be the superior method. The image change detection prestudy evaluates 8 different image change detection methods. Result from the image change detection prestudy shows that the methods performance is dependent on the image category and an ensemble method is the least dependent on the category of images. An ensemble method is found to be the best performing method followed by a range filter method and then a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) method. Using a combination of the 2 image retrieval methods and the 8 image change detection method 16 different VSCD are formed and tested. The final result show that the VSCD comprised of the best methods from the prestudies is the best performing method.
