Abstract:
This chapter discusses and defines fiscal squeeze, explains why fiscal squeeze and austerity is important and intriguing, sets out a way to identify, classify, and measure fiscal squeezes, and shows what can be learnt from exploring a single case, that of the UK, over a century. It reviews relevant literature and identifies three key political choices in fiscal squeeze: (a) tax hikes versus spending cuts; (b) depth versus length of squeezes (‘surgery without anaesthetics’ or ‘boiling frogs’); (c) how to handle the blame and the tactic of ‘heresthetic’. It develops the analytic approach pursued in the book, combining quantitative and qualitative analysis and focusing the latter on loss imposition, political cost to incumbents, and state effort in fiscal squeeze.

Abstract:
Cast shadows are present in almost every scene we view, yet very little is known about how the brain processes them. On the one hand, shadows can interfere with the visual ability to recognize objects, while on the other hand, they provide critical information for where objects are in a scene. Because shadows can provide compelling cues for location in depth, these cues can overcome other competing sources of information, resulting in illusions. By studying shadow illusions, one can gain insight into the built-in assumptions the brain has about the nature of illumination and its interaction with the surfaces we view each day.

Abstract:
In early Indian Buddhist art, numerous stupas were erected to store relics commemorating a past Buddha instead of depicting the death of Sakyamuni. Relic cult is the focus of Buddha worship, but in early Chinese Buddhist art, nirvana scenes were not the focus of Buddha’s life, which was an idealized legend. The development and expression of the nirvana image (which symbolizes the transmission of the dharma) with new styles shows how Buddhism adapted to local traditions as it spread into China. From the second half of the sixth century, the nirvana scene was depicted as lamenting the deceased. At the end of the seventh century, nirvana versions were dramatized and glorified in monumental works and blended in with more popular images based on scenes from the Lotus Sutra; this expressed the idea that the dharma is constantly regenerated and was more in line with the hopes and desires of the Chinese people.
