Abstract:
In this study, the traditional knowledge and uses of Myracrodruon urundeuva, an endangered species, wereinvestigated in two rural communities, in the municipality of Soledade, State of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. Semistructuredinterviews were conducted with the heads of households, 16 in Barrocas and 28 in Cachoeira, trying todistinguish the current from the potential uses. To collect demographic information on the M. urundeuva population, allindividuals with circumference at soil level > 3 cm were recorded in the surveys. Plant uses were classified into sevencategories (subdivided into timber and non-timber, especially for construction): forage, fuel, construction, medicine, technology, veterinary and as an abortive. Those interviewed showed that they gather plants either from their ownproperties or from neighboring farms. In the community of Cachoeira there were more records of use by men (89 citations)than by women (65) whereas in Barrocas records showed equal use by men and women. Our results suggest that thewidespread popularity and use of M. urundeuva has threatened the species to the verge of local extinction.

Abstract:
The influences of explant orientation on in vitro responses of Annona squamosa L. were evaluated. Hypocotyl and epicotyl segments were inoculated into test tubes with WPM medium supplemented with 8.87 µM BAP in the following orientations: horizontally on the medium surface, vertically upright retaining their natural polarity and vertically upright but inverted from their natural polarity (hypocotyl segments only). The test tubes were sealed with normal transparent plastic caps (either covered or not covered with PVC film) or with cotton plugs. After inoculation the tubes with the explants were maintained in a growth room under photosynthetically active radiation levels of 45-56 ìmol.m-2.s-1 and temperatures of 25 ± 3oC. The results showed that explant polarity affected organogenesis, and that the largest numbers of shoots (8.3 per explant) were found on hypocotyl explants placed vertically and retaining their natural polarity. No influences of the different test tube caps on morphogenetic responses of the explants were observed. The incubation of hypocotyl and epicotyl segments in a vertical position constitutes an efficient system for generating A. squamosa plants.

Abstract:

Abstract:

To evaluate the seismic performances and effects that dual-core self-centering braces (DC-SCBs) and sandwiched buckling-restrained braces (SBRBs) would make in high-rise buildings, two actual high-rise buildings in Taiwan were selected and modeled with installing of DC-SCBs and SBRBs. In order to avoid the pretension force of tendons in DC-SCB losing during earthquake excitation, an external friction device (EFD) was designed as a fuse in series with the main brace, slipping before the axial strain of tendon exceeded its yield strain. To estimate seismic parameters of actual high-rise buildings and to validate the dynamic response of analytical model under earthquake excitation, long-term vibration monitoring of a selected Hsinchu high-rise factory building was conducted. A full-scale DC-SCB+EFD and a full-scale SBRB were tested to validate their seismic cyclic performances. Nonlinear time history analyses were conducted on two sets of SMRFs, SMRF+SBRBFs and SMRF+DC-SCBFs to evaluate their seismic demands under both design and maximum considered level of earthquake motions. Analysis results showed that DC-SCB provided well seismic effect in reduction of both maximum and residual drift of frames. SBRB provided well seismic effect in reduction of maximum drift of frames, while might make the residual drift larger.

The research is devoted to developing a smart city information and organization support model based on the most prominent international smart city ranking practices of systematization. The concepts are summarized. The smart cities in the global economy in the context of leading international rankings were analyzed. Special attention is given to the variations in measurement methodologies to capture the impact of smart cities, including the Smart City Index and the Strategy Index. The top 10 smartest cities in the global economy were analyzed in terms of international rankings. The emphasis is given to American cities. The proposed smart city information and organization support model is based on the concept of the Smart City Balanced Scorecard (SCBS), which allows systematically identifying and organizing priority areas for the development of a smart city and specify strategic directions in each priority area. An approach to calculating the ranking of the integrated indicator of sustainable development of a smart city (R-SCBS) according to the Balanced Scorecard is developed.

In the post-reform era, quality delivery of the services has acquired centre point of the service industry around the globe. The banking sector being purely a service-related industry has been influenced more by the issue of providing quality service. With the entry of private banks, the banking sector has gone through many transformations including the way services are extended. In a backward state like Assam, this has arrived a little late, but the changes are gradually visible. The chapter captures the service quality standard of the Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) and also for the different bank groups in order to make a comparison. The SERVPERF scale is used to study the replies of the customers in two cities, Guwahati and Tezpur, and some econometric tools are used to analyse the data. The study reveals that the private sector banks are far ahead of the public sector banks in terms of quality of service. The private banks influence the service quality of the SCBs the most among all the bank groups. Overall, the public sector banks, which are the dominant market players, will have to work hard to catch the level of the private banks.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction LDPE is produced under high pressure (82–276 MPa) and high temperature (405–605 K) with a free radical initiator (such as peroxides and oxygen) and contains some long chain branches (LCB), which could be as long as chain backbones, and short chain branches (SCB).(3) It is produced by either a tubular or a stirred autoclave reactor.(4) The autoclave process can produce LDPE resins having a wide range of molecular weight distribution (MWD) and less LCB in comparison with a tubular reactor. Long chain branching has a strong influence on MWD, and hence on resin properties, such as processibility, melt strength, and film optical properties. SCBs disrupt chain packing and are principally responsible for lowering the melting temperature and the crystal density for hydrocarbon polymers. LDPE is commercially available in a wide variety of molecular weight, MWD, SCB, and LCB contents, and density ranges.

Abstract:
A free surface semicircular breakwater (SCB) with rectangular perforations has been developed to serve as a wave defence structure. Hydrodynamic performance of the breakwaters of various perforations has been thoroughly investigated through wave measurements in a wave flume under random waves. The SCBs were experimentally confirmed to be good anti-reflection wave structures; however, the level of wave transmission at the leeside of the SCBs was rather high particularly when immersed in limited depth and confronted by waves of longer period. This study aims at optimizing the hydraulic characteristics of the SCB by extending its draft by means of wave screens. Three test configurations have been identified in this study, namely (1) the SCB with front screen, (2) the SCB with rear screen, and (3) the SCB with double screens. For each wave screen, three porosities (i.e. 25, 40 and 50%) have been considered in the experiments. The models of shallow immersion depths have been tested in random waves of different characteristics in a wave flume. Wave transformation at different locations upstream and downstream of the test models has been recorded by wave probes. The hydraulic performance of the breakwater are quantified by the coefficients of wave transmission, reflection and energy dissipation, and the wave climate in the vicinity of the breakwater are presented in the form of a ratio relative to the incident wave height. The optimum design of SCB supplemented by truncated wave screen(s) is proposed at the end of the study.

Abstract:
With the development of supercritical (and even ultra-supercritical) pressure boilers (SCBs) with high capacities, and at the same time, with the consideration of supercritical pressure water-cooled reactors (SCWRs) as one of the six most promising reactor concepts accepted in the Generation IV International Forum (GIF), flow and heat transfer of supercritical water becomes more and more important for both the design and operation safety of the related facilities. Thermo-hydraulic characteristics are among the issues, which are of special significance for the SCBs and SCWRs. It has been found that at supercritical pressures, the hydraulic resistance of water exhibits special characteristics in regions near its pseudo-critical point, which is hereafter called the minimum drag coefficient phenomenon. Experimental investigation was carried out in the present study to investigate further the characteristics of drag coefficient of supercritical pressure water under different conditions. The total pressure drop characteristic of water flowing in smooth tube and internally ribbed tube under the supercritical pressures was measured in experiments with a wide range of operational parameters, such as the system pressures ranging from 23 to 28 MPa, the average heat fluxes varied from 100 kW/m2 to 500kW/m2, and the mass fluxes of water in a range of 600 ∼ 1050 kg/m2s. The experimental data were compared with prediction results calculated by existing common correlations for single phase pressure drops, and large discrepancies were observed between the experimental data and the prediction results. Furthermore, the pressure drops characteristics of supercritical pressure water in cases with different tube arrangement and test conditions were compared with each other, such as that in horizontal tubes and vertical tubes, and that in isothermal flows and in non-isothermal flows. Additionally, this phenomenon observed in the present studies was also analyzed by using computational fluid dynamics technology, and the mechanism of pressure drop variation was reasonably explained. It was found that the deviation appeared between the previously proposed drag coefficient correlations and the present experimental data was mainly owning to ignoring the variation of an existence of the minimum drag coefficient in the pseudo critical region in previous studies, and based on the data obtained in this study, a new correlation for drag coefficient for supercritical pressure water was presented.

Abstract:
Abstract High-risk organizations are continuously striving to minimize risks and establish a safe working environment. While technology and high standards are crucial, a core aspect of an effective safety management system lies in safe human behavior. The primary aim of this study was to provide an understanding of some of the human and organizational factors that influence safety behavior of employees in the oil and gas industry. Transformational and transactional styles of leadership were explored along with assessing safety culture with a view to understand their influence on safety behaviors. The commonly investigated form of safety behavior is Safety Compliance, which is seen as the answer to achieving positive safety results. However, in order to go above and beyond, in other words, taking ownership and accountability of safety, another form of behavior is crucial, called the Safety Citizenship Behavior (SCB), which has gained a lot of attention in the past years. In addition to leadership styles, various leader attributes (e.g. leader fairness, trust) were examined in terms of their influence in safety context. Data was gathered from about 200 employees in the oil and gas sector using the highly recognized measures like the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Mediation and moderation effects were tested based on Baron and Kenny's guidelines. The results highlighted interesting findings as they threw light on the pivotal role played by trust in influencing safety behaviors, particularly SCBs. Similar effect was seen with regards to fairness and personal identification with the leader; due to its strong correlation with trust. In addition, safety culture, which has been emphasized in the safety/risk literature over 40 years also showed up as a stronger predictor of safety compliance, whereby subordinates’ safety compliance was reinforced with a strong safety culture. The augmentation effect of transformational leadership, which is known to build on transactional leadership were also investigated, however, the results did not offer as much support as in the literature. This brings into question the considerable emphasis placed on transformational leadership, particularly where prioritization of safety is key. The results will aid organizations analyze their safety leadership training programs. Further, it also helps leaders understand key attributes they need to embed in interactions with their immediate and wider teams to bring about positive impact on safety. Lastly, the study also highlights the concept of SCB, which is a significant aspect in building an accountable and mindful safety culture.
