AbstractHalorhadinus Sawada is redescribed and illustrations of diagnostic features are presented. Median lobes and parameres of H. aequalis Sawada and H. inaequalis Sawada are described for the first time. A key is provided for separation of the known species of Halorhadinus. Based on contiguous mesocoxal cavities, galea with several setae only on mesal surface and apex with setae, Halorhadinus is hypothesized to be a member of the tribe Liparocephalini. A revised cladistic analysis of the Liparocephalini based on 50 adult characters suggests that Halorhadinus belong to the Liparocephalini with the following patterns of generic relationships (outgroup (Salinamexus Moore & Legner (Halorhadinus Sawada (Amblopusa Casey (Paramblopusa Ahn &Ashe (Diaulota Casey + Liparocephalus Mäklin)))))). Monophyly of the genus Halorhadinus is supported by three synapomorphies (mentum with anterior margin deeply sinuate and antero-lateral parts triangular; ligula round and very long, almost reaching to half of palpi; spatulate setae mostly located on basal part of palpi). A key to the genera of the Liparocephalini is given.

Abstract:
In this paper, a [Formula: see text]-dimensional generalized variable-coefficient Sawada–Kotera (gvcSK) equation is investigated, which describes many nonlinear phenomena in fluid dynamics and plasma physics. Based on the properties of binary Bell polynomials, we present a Hirota’s bilinear equation to the gvcSK equation. By virtue of the Hirota’s bilinear equation, we obtain the N-soliton solutions and the quasi-periodic wave solutions of the gvcSK equation, which can be reduced to the ones of several integrable equations such as Sawada–Kotera, modified Caudrey–Dodd–Gibbon–Sawada–Kotera, isospectral BKP equations and etc. Furthermore, we obtain the relationship between the soliton solutions and periodic solutions by considering the asymptotic properties of the periodic solutions.

Full text
Abstract:
Healthy carnivore populations are important to maintaining ecosystem balance, but many species are declining globally at disturbing rates due to anthropogenic causes. To effectively manage and conserve carnivores, wildlife managers must be able to obtain reliable estimates of population parameters. Noninvasive genetic sampling (NGS) methods such as hair or scat collection offer new and exciting alternatives to traditional carnivore research methods involving capture, drugging, and handling of animals; however, the potential of NGS methods to answer applied ecological questions has not been fully realized. The main objective of my doctoral research was to develop and apply NGS methods to estimate demographic and genetic parameters for large carnivore populations in the Rocky Mountains. First, I evaluated two NGS methods, hair snares and snow tracking, for cougars (Puma concolor) in Yellowstone National Park. I developed a method to collect hair while following cougar tracks in snow to bed sites and natural hair snags (e.g. thorn bushes, branch tips) from which I demonstrated that samples collected using NGS can provide reliable information on cougar population abundance. Next, I compared the ability of two NGS methods, hair traps and bear rub surveys, to estimate population abundance and trend of grizzly (Ursus arctos) and black bears (U. americanus) in Banff National Park. I found that bear rubs performed better than hair traps for estimating grizzly bear abundance and population growth rates, whereas hair traps worked better than bear rubs for black bears. I then used NGS to examine demographic and genetic connectivity at wildlife crossing structures along the Trans-Canada Highway that bisects Banff National Park. I compared genetic data collected from the bear populations surrounding the highway to data collected at the crossing structures using a novel hair sampling system. This comparison allowed me to show that wildlife crossing structures provided demographic connectivity for bear populations and maintained sufficient gene flow across the highway to prevent genetic isolation. In short, I have demonstrated the power of using an array of NGS methods, alone or in combination, to estimate abundance, gene flow, genetic structure, migration, and population growth rates for large carnivores in the Rocky Mountains. Pinsak, Samantha. "Everything is not sawa sawa: Abuse and informal employment in Kenya." Thesis, Boston College, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:106847.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Can Erbil
Violence against women and subsequent gender-based violence are issues that plague the world, harming women’s wellbeing as well as that of their families. Thirty-nine percent and twenty-one percent of Kenyan women have experienced physical and sexual violence, respectively, in their lifetimes. While there have been contested studies showing that employment can both increase and decrease the risk of suffering from violence, particularly in domestic settings, this study examines how a Kenyan woman’s experience of violence is likely to affect her level (formal or informal) of employment in the future. The results of this study indicate that emotional abuse, having a partner that drinks, educational attainment, living in a rural setting, and age are significant factors in a woman’s probability of working. Conditioned on working, experiencing controlling behaviors from a partner, educational attainment, justification of violence, ethnicity, income rank, partner’s occupation, and age at first marriage influence a woman’s probability of working informally. These results vary based on the type of employment studied, but can have wide-ranging consequences for the economic development of Kenya and empowerment of Kenyan women

Abstract:
The frequent financial critical states that occur in our world, during many centuries have attracted scientists from different areas. The impact of similar fluctuations continues to have a huge impact on the world economy, causing instability in it concerning normal and natural disturbances [1]. The an- ticipation, prediction, and identification of such phenomena remain a huge chal- lenge. To be able to prevent such critical events, we focus our research on the chaotic properties of the stock market indices. During the discussion of the re- cent papers that have been devoted to the chaotic behavior and complexity in the financial system, we find that the Largest Lyapunov exponent and the spec- trum of Lyapunov exponents can be evaluated to determine whether the system is completely deterministic, or chaotic. Accordingly, we give a theoretical background on the method for Lyapunov exponents estimation, specifically, we followed the methods proposed by J. P. Eckmann and Sano-Sawada to compute the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents. With Rosenstein’s algorithm, we com- pute only the Largest (Maximal) Lyapunov exponents from an experimental time series, and we consider one of the measures from recurrence quantification analysis that in a similar way as the Largest Lyapunov exponent detects highly non-monotonic behavior. Along with the theoretical material, we present the empirical results which evidence that chaos theory and theory of complexity have a powerful toolkit for construction of indicators-precursors of crisis events in financial markets.
