Abstract:
According to the theories of Life Design (Savickas 2010; 2005) the making of the professional profile can be interpreted as a "life story", a construction and a narrative reconstruction through which to fix experiences, thoughts, contents, but also give «a personal meaning to past memories, present experiences and future aspirations, combining them in a theme of life that shapes the professional life of the individual» (Savickas, 2005, p. 43).In this sense, the professional profile can be considered a dynamic process supported by reflection as a device through which people learn from their experiences in order to improve themselves through conscious immersion in their own experience.

Abstract:

Relating the process of professional socialisation to professional adaptability and age, the hypothesis is raised that professional adaptability of young adults is lower than that of mature adults. The survey of 44 part-time students of different age from Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences applying the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS) (Savickas, Porfeli, 2012) revealed that professional adaptability of young adults is statistically significantly lower than that of mature adults.

Abstract:
Students enrolled in university courses often lack knowledge of potential jobs and career paths they can take, which can inhibit their ability to plan, job seek and make decisions about their careers, and negatively impact on their ability to gain employment. To address this problem we developed and piloted a tailored, career-focused interactive online learning tool for public health and exercise science students, based on constructs of Savickas’ (2005) theory of career construction. This paper reports a mixed-methods study to understand student experiences of using that tool, and their perception of how well it prepared them for career planning. Twenty-two second-year students completed an online survey using both qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the perceived feasibility and acceptability of the interactive online learning tool. Descriptive (for quantitative data) and inductive content analyses (for qualitative data) were performed. Most students (86%) indicated that they would use the tool again. All students reported that the tool was user-friendly, engaging and informative and provided them with jobs that matched their personal and work-related skills and strengths. Qualitative data reflected these findings and identified seven key themes, including: value, career exploration, design, and tailoring, with themes partly reflecting components of Savicka’s theory. The tailored, career-focused interactive online learning tool was perceived to be a feasible and effective strategy to support university students in their career planning and job seeking behaviours prior to graduation. These findings can be used to inform and refine the development of career-focussed tools for students undertaking other University courses.

Life-design counselling discourse originator, Mark Savickas, calls for its expansion from an individual intervention to encompass interpersonal and intimate relationships. In this article, a fictitious foreign-service couple – configured from the author’s recent case files for authenticity – illustrates use of a modified Career Construction Interview in life-design counselling for resolution of life–career conundrums commonly experienced by dual-career couples. Practical models and seminal resources are identified for those unfamiliar with the dual-career couple construct or inexperienced with couple counselling. A strategy and topics for future field research collaboration between academics and career practitioners are suggested.

Abstract:
This research reports a qualitative case study in which university students’ career paths are analyzed through autobiographical interviews. Seventeen graduates of pedagogic sciences and business administration and management were selected. Our aim was to analyze the students’ adaptabilities and resources to cope with and adapt to changes during their transition processes. A deductive analysis of career adaptability was conducted. The dimensions proposed by Savickas and Porfely (2012) were carried out in order to assess adaptability: Curiosity, Control, Confidence and Concern. The results support the contribution of qualitative and narrative research in the study of transitions and career adaptability. The discussion focuses on the different presence of the four dimensions in each case and justifies the need of developing narrative career interventions at university.

Based on career construction theory, we conducted a cross-cultural validation study of the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale–Short Form (CAAS-SF) proposed by Maggiori, Rossier, and Savickas across three sample groups (college students, civil servants, and enterprise employees) in the Chinese context. Results of the principal component analyses and confirmatory factor analyses suggested a four-factor solution and confirmed the hierarchical structure of the Chinese version of the CAAS-SF. In addition, this short form achieved satisfactory configural invariance, full metric invariance, and scalar invariance. These findings support the use of the CAAS-SF as a valid and reliable measure to assess career adaptability in China. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract With the rise in global older adult populations, university programs need to produce an effective, gerontology-trained workforce (Silverstein & Fitzgerald, 2017). Career decision-making involves interactive learning (Super, 1990), as adults explore career options, engage in career learning, and understand curriculum integration within professional settings (Savickas, 2013). Gerontology faculty can utilize career planning models that integrate intergenerational engagement within the curriculum to aid student career decisions (Reardon, Lenz, Peterson, & Sampson, 2012). This paper provides an overview of a career planning model and highlights the ways intergenerational programs can be intentionally staged in research, service, and extracurricular domains to promote career planning and success in post-graduate employment. Data from our recent gerontology alumni survey including graduates since the program inception will be outlined to support the importance and success of developing strong applied intergenerational career programs in gerontology.

Abstract:
Based upon substantial research on career adaptability, and on specific cross-cultural validation research of the Career Adapt-abilities Scale (CAAS) (Savickas & Porfeli, 2012) we recruited a sample of Greek university students (Ν = 452) in order to test further the Greek form of the scale. Confirmatory Factor Analysis models showed that the four-factor structure was supported for the Greek form, comprising four dimensions: concern, control, curiosity, and confidence. The original six items per dimension structure was also maintained. Internal consistency estimates were satisfactory, and test-retest reliability reached acceptable levels. Indications of convergent validity were found as CAAS positively correlated with self-esteem. To further explore for the construct validity of the scale score differences by gender and year of studies were also examined. Overall, the observed differences were found to be in the expected direction. This validity study indicates that CAAS may be safely applied to the Greek students.

The purpose of this study was to test validity of the Korean version of the Career Adaptability Scale(CAAS) developed by Savickas(2012) based on two samples of employees. In the study 1, data were collected from 300 employees across a wide variety of companies. The total of 24 items of the Korean version of the CAAS were administered. The results of factor analyses showed that the four-factor model with 16 items was appropriate. In the study 2, data were collected from 184 employees across various companies. The results of confirmatory factor analyses showed that the four-factor model had high goodness-of-fit indices supporting construct validity of the Korean version of the CAAS. Also the results of correlation analyses showed that career adaptability was significantly related to various criteria such as perception of future career success, career planning, career satisfaction, and career commitment, confirming criterion-related validity of the Korean version of the CAAS. Finally, implications, limitations, and future studies were discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract. During the transition to adulthood, young people need to choose their career and overall life pathway and cope successfully with the transitions they face. The theories of personal identity development ( Luyckx, Goossens, Soenens, & Beyers, 2006 ; Luyckx et al., 2008 ), career development ( Savickas, 2005 ), and goal developmental regulation ( Nurmi, 2004 ; Salmela-Aro, 2009 ) address the question of how people commit and engage in the changes faced during the transition from adolescence to adulthood, and particularly how they deal with educational and occupational transitions. We reviewed how each of these theories discusses both adaptive and maladaptive processes during the transition to adulthood, including such themes as the feeling of competent, exploring choices, crystallizing and making decision, forming certainty, managing transition, changing direction and rumination. We propose that these theories are in fact presenting different perspectives on the same developmental process of intentional engagement. Finally, suggestions for future research and intervention outcomes are discussed.

Purpose Drawing upon the career construction theory (Savickas, 2002, 2013) and the conservation of resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989, 2001), the purpose of this paper is to explore whether, how and when career adaptability influences citizenship outcomes (i.e. citizenship behavior and citizenship fatigue). Design/methodology/approach Two-wave data were collected from 306 employees working in the operation department of an e-commerce company in Eastern China. Findings The results showed that both affective commitment and emotional exhaustion mediated the relationship between career adaptability and both citizenship behavior and citizenship fatigue, revealing a dual-process mechanism. Moreover, both the positive association between career adaptability and affective commitment and the negative association between career adaptability and emotional exhaustion were stronger among employees with a high (vs low) level of hindrance stressors. Research limitations/implications This study sheds light on the mechanisms and boundary conditions of the career adaptabilities–citizenship outcomes relationship. Originality/value This is one of the first studies to investigate the mechanism of the relationship between career adaptability and citizenship outcomes using multi-wave data.

PurposeThis work contributes to the literature on career adaptability by examining the criterion validity of the Cooperation dimension, supporting the inclusion of cooperation into the career adaptability construct and informing the nomological network of career adaptability (Nye et al., 2018; Savickas and Porfeli, 2012). The authors also evaluate the improvements in cross-cultural generalizability argued for by Nye et al. (2018) by conducting a criterion validity study of the CAAS including cooperation using a non-Western sample.Design/methodology/approachSurvey responses from a Chinese adult working sample (N = 208, 53.4% male) were analyzed via relative weights analysis, facilitating the comparison of the Cooperation dimension to other career adaptability dimensions and general adaptability.FindingsResults demonstrate the added value of the Cooperation dimension across several work outcomes (i.e. work engagement, career commitment, occupational well-being, occupational stress) and highlight Cooperation in predicting interpersonal outcomes (i.e. supervisor and coworker satisfaction).Originality/valueThe inclusion of Cooperation, a dimension originally conceptualized as a career adaptability factor but only recently subjected to additional psychometric evaluation, within the career adaptability paradigm should promote both predictive validity and cross-cultural generalizability.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to present the assumptions of the concept of the career adaptability of Mark Savickas and to present the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Career Adapt-Ability Scale. It consists of five dimensions: concern, control, curiosity, confidence and cooperation. The analyzes were carried out with the participation of young adults (N = 664; 63% women, 37% men) aged 18 to 34 years (M = 24.4, SD = 2.9). The reliability of the tool was assessed on the basis of internal consistency method. Evidence of construct validity was obtained through confirmatory analysis and correlation with other, conceptually related variables such as social participation and tolerance of ambiguity in a career decision situation, measured using four indicators – preference, tolerance, confidence, and aversion. The results obtained indicate very good psychometric properties of the questionnaire. A high level of career adaptability is characteristic for two types of social participation – integration and assimilation. The higher intensity within all five components of Career Adapt-Ability Scale is also accompanied by a stronger acceptance of unknown, complex, inconsistent and unpredictable information when professional decisions are made.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Parents are a major influence on adolescents' career development. However, past studies have mostly explored general rather than career-specific parenting aspects. According to Dietrich and Kracke (2009) parental support, parental interference, and lack of parental career engagement are basic dimensions of career-specific parental behaviours. This study examined the relationship between these parental behaviours and career adaptability in a sample of high school students (N = 197; Mage = 16.79). The data were collected in a group online testing. Student career adaptability was measured with the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (Savickas & Porfeli, 2012) and parental career-specific behaviours were measured by the scale developed by Dietrich and Kracke (2009). Parental support emerged as the most important positive predictor of career adaptability since it predicted both global career adaptability and separate dimensions. Parental interference negatively predicted career control, career confidence, and overall career adaptability but only when parents' career engagement was higher. The results point out that in understanding parental influences in students' career development it is important to consider different parenting practices and also examine separate students' career adaptability resources. Parents should be helped to recognise their career-related parenting practices and to understand the potential of these behaviours in facilitating their children's career adaptability. Special counselling interventions should be provided for students who perceive that their parents are not providing enough career-related support.

Abstract:
PurposeVery little research has examined how adaptivity, adaptability resources, adapting responses and adaptation results are interlinked with each other. The current research aims to investigate whether career adaptability influences job outcomes via job content plateau. Taking career construction theory (Savickas, 2005) as a base, the research model of this study posited that employee's favorable job outcomes, i.e. job satisfaction and performance depend upon their psychosocial meta-capacities (career adaptability) and job content plateau. Further, the study is the first to examine the moderating role of proactivity among career adaptability, job content plateau and job outcomes relationship.Design/methodology/approachIt is a two-wave longitudinal study, quantitative in nature and has collected data from 357 faculty members of Indian universities. The hypotheses have been empirically tested through the structural equation modeling technique.FindingsThe moderated mediation model was supported, and as predicted, (1) career adaptability was positively related to job outcomes and (2) the mediated relationship between career adaptability and job outcomes via content plateau was stronger for individuals with high levels of proactivity.Practical implicationsThe study encourages career management practitioners and counselors to integrate proactive behaviors and career adaptability into counseling techniques to equip clients with necessary skills and deal with unfavorable job experiences, thereby engendering favorable job outcomes.Originality/valueThe current study is the first to test the intervening effect of proactivity in career adaptability and job outcomes relationships via job content plateau.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the differences in the values and behaviours of employees and entrepreneurs and to develop guidelines for employers to foster entrepreneurial thinking in their organisations. Design/methodology/approach To determine individual behaviours, the authors used the career adaptability scale developed by Savickas and Porfelli (2012), complemented with the statements regarding relationships in the workplace and reward, designed by Gattiker and Larwood (1986). The individual values were evaluated by Schwartz’s individual value framework. The career success of individuals was defined by income level and job satisfaction. Data from a sample of 473 respondents were analysed using structural equation modelling. Findings This paper reveals that there are differences in the behaviours and the values of employees and entrepreneurs. Employees are more concerned with relationships at the workplace, rewards and confidence, whereas entrepreneurs focus solely on relationships. Self-direction value has a direct positive impact. Universalism, conformism, achievement, stimulation and safety have indirect positive effects on career success for employees. There is no specific individual value driving career success for entrepreneurs. Originality/value This paper follows the recent trends in organisational culture development whereby organisations seek to incorporate the entrepreneurial mindset at all levels of the organisation. Until now, there has been scarce empirical evidence on the differences between entrepreneurial and employee values. This research provides evidence that the value gap between these two distinct groups is considerable enough to question the ability of the average employee to adopt the entrepreneurial behaviour required by modern organisations.

Abstract:
Indecisiveness and negative thinking regarding career pathways can hinder university students’ career planning, motivation, and mental health. Students intending to enter the workforce after graduation therefore need to develop skills related to career adaptability (i.e. career planning, decision-making, problem solving/confidence and exploration), particularly since career planning and construction is linked to gaining employment. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of an online career planning module on students’ career adaptability. The career-focussed online module, based on the constructs of Savickas’ (2005) theory of career construction, and tailored to students’ skills and interests, was developed and embedded into the University curriculum of a second-year exercise and public health-related unit. In 2018, 80 students completed the online module, along with pre- and post-intervention questionnaires assessing career adaptability elements including career planning, decision making, problem solving/confidence, and exploration. Dependent t-tests were conducted to assess differences in these measures pre- and post-intervention. Post-intervention, significant increases in career-planning strategies used (t(69)=5.45, p<0.001), career planning concern (t(69)=3.73, p<0.001), decision making (i.e. career path identification) (t(70)=3.86, p<0.001), decision making confidence (t(65)=2.69, p<0.01), and problem solving/confidence (t(65) = 2.16, p=0.03) were observed. Further, 80% of participants identified jobs at post-intervention not previously identified pre-intervention (exploration) and 71% of participants perceived improvements in confidence regarding job ideas/making career choices. Findings from this research indicated that completing a brief online career education module, tailored to an individual’s skills and interests, improved all dimensions of the participating students’ career adaptability. Further research utilising longer-term follow-up and randomised controlled trial designs are required to confirm the reliability and transferability of the findings.

Abstract:
Objective – To explore the motivations for choosing school librarianship as a career. Design – Narrative research, qualitative interviews. Setting – The School Media program specialization in a Master of Library Science program at a large research university. Subjects – Five graduate school students seeking initial certification as school library media specialists. Methods – The researcher employed narrative research, based on career construction theory and the Life Story Interview, (McAdams, 1995). This methodology is a set of loosely-structured, open-ended questions designed to encourage detailed, in-depth responses from the participant teller, combined with a more structured Career Style Interview (Savickas, 2005) designed to elicit self-defining stories. Data was collected through qualitative interviews, using personal narrative interviews that focused on the entire life of each person from birth to present (Life Story Interviews) and additional questions in an interview format (Career Style Interview.) Data was collected and analyzed in two stages. The analysis first examined participants as individuals then tried to identify commonalties among the stories. Each life story was examined to determine a career style on the basis of vocational personality, career adaptability and life theme. The interview data was then analyzed for thematic connections and occupational choice. Main Results – The final analysis identified the following themes as relevant to the study, and to the career choices of graduate students planning to be school librarians: parental expectations; career changers; librarian mentors; prior library work experiences; reading; library experiences; altruism-service; desire to work with children; financial stability and security; flexibility of work schedule; emotional distance; and vocational personality. In general, the participants appear to value safe, traditional career choices that allow them to put family first and maintain a flexible work schedule, while also providing financial stability and security. Those who are already teachers noted interest in a job that provides relief and emotional distance from the everyday social problems of students. All five noted the “love of reading” as a motivation for choosing this career path. The vocational personality of each subject was determined through interpreting their answers on the Career Interest Surveys, using Holland Occupational Theme RIASEC codes: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The vocational personality of all five students did not match the predominant code for school librarians. None exhibited a resemblance to the “enterprising” type, the most prominent personality for successful school librarians. All five did exhibit “artistic” vocational personality, and the researcher notes that this may be an explanation for the choice of librarianship as a second career, as artistic types take longer to find a compatible career match. The researcher also notes that the final code is a “best estimate” for each subject. Conclusion – Examining the vocational development of the five graduate students through vocational personality, career adaption and life theme afforded a broader viewpoint than traditional survey studies. The determining of vocational personality type may be helpful to recruitment efforts to the profession, and help make the career choice more visible.

Abstract:
The main purpose of the research is to explore the career orientations - functional/technical competence, general managerial competence, security/stability, entrepreneurial creativity (Schein, 1978; 1990) and career development expectations of young people. The sample consists of 160 respondents divided in two age groups – up to 25 years old and between 26-35 years old. All of them have full-time or part-time job positions in organization where information technologies are applied. The respondents are on different stages in their career according the typologies of career development (Savickas, 1995; Schein, 1990). First age group till 25 years old represents the generation “Z” which is just starting their first job and this is the beginning of their career path. Individuals in their mid-twenties are within a stage of exploration and narrow their work preferences. Several career expectations could be unrealistic but individuals within this age seek opportunities to explore careers through work experience and try a variety of job activities in a number of organizations. The second age group (26-35 years old) represents “Y” generation. They are in their establishment career stage where their expectations and preferences are stabilized and realistic. These individuals are highly motivated to succeed and strive for challenge, creativity, achievement and development of their own personal potential. The representatives of those two generations are active workforce at the current moment and their career expectations and orientations should be considered in HRM strategies and practices. The main results of the study show that young people expect in their career to have autonomy and independence, to work with new technologies and to be involved in challenging, innovative and long-term projects. The results from descriptive statistics indicate the expectations of young people to work with new technologies, to strive to promotion and hierarchical career development and to take part in trainings and skills development programs and long-term projеcts. The T-test analysis was made to establish the differences between the age groups. There were not found any differences between the two age groups. The respondents have an orientation more to hierarchical career than to horizontal career and prefer to engage in long-term work projects as well as to develop themselves working in innovative and challenging projects and job tasks. They also tend to invest in improvement of their skills including professional competences, new and diverse soft skills. The main conclusion of the research is that young people strive to combine hierarchical promotion or vertical career with horizontal career. There are no differences between two age groups in their career expectations. Results from regression analysis indicate the existing influence of managerial competence and entrepreneurial creativity on the career expectations. Career profile of the young people combines autonomy/independence, managerial competency and entrepreneurial creativity. The autonomy is a leading career anchor and confirms the assumption that the new generations strive to be more independent and to have self-control in their jobs. This creates career expectation which gives opportunity for personal control, flexibility and aims to go beyond organizational restrictions, rules and procedures. The opportunities for hierarchical career growth are desirable but only if they allow engagement in innovative projects that satisfy the entrepreneurial orientation of the young people. They are ready to develop diverse skills, to be engaged in different challenging innovative projects and to participate in variety of career and personal development programs such as talent management and coaching.

Abstract:
In this study, the results obtained by the numerical simulation presented in this paper are compared with the results obtained experimentally by Oliveski (2000) for a vertical cylindrical thermal reservoir with internal diameter of 0.42m and internal height of 0.57m (79L). In the simulation using Ansys software, for the same parameters of the problem, a study to evaluate the degree of mesh refinement was performed based on the methodology used by Adolfo (2015). The boundary conditions adopted were: Flow: Transient; Buoyancy Model: Boussinesq Approximation; Step of time used: 1s; Wall Condition: Top Non slip / adiabatic; Base: h = 06 [Wm ^ 2 / K]; Lateral: h = 10 [Wm ^ 2 / K]; Initial tank conditions: Null velocity field and initial temperature of approximately 355.15 K. Total simulated flow time: 18,000 s. For the external temperature, contour condition used in the simulation, the ambient temperature was used as a function of time through the graph provided by Oliveski. Three meshes were compared based on the methodology used by Adolfo (2015) in his studies. These have 1,512,143 and 7,997,663, 851,837 and 4,379,079, 271,898 and 1,308,368, number of nodes and elements, respectively. For the turbulence model adopted, the SST (Shear Stress Transport) model was used. The simulations took approximately 58 days to complete. The residue sought in the iterations was at least 0.001, with a maximum of 100 iterations for each time step. For the behavior of the temperature field in the tank over time the formation of the stratified temperature profile was observed, as described in Oliveski's work, and also that the thermal stratification occurs only in the lower region and that in the upper region the water becomes temperature is almost constant. In terms of mean temperature in the tank, the simulation is very close to the results shown by Savicki (2007). However, in terms of temperature profile along the height of the tank, this behavior is shown to be different. Another fact is that the height of the thermocline found in this simulation was considerably higher than that shown in the Savicki simulation. Therefore, the results obtained were validated with the experimental results presented by Oliveski and the numerical results presented by Savicki. It has been confirmed that the mesh with the second refinement level is already sufficiently capable of generating satisfactory results.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test career adaptability (CA) as an underlying mechanism linking high-performance work practices (HPWPs) to met expectations, creative performance and extra-role performance. Design/methodology/approach Data were obtained from 313 customer-contact employees two weeks apart in three waves in the hotel industry in Iran. The proposed relationships were tested via structural equation modeling. Findings Employees who perceive that management offers various HPWPs display elevated levels of CA. These employees in turn find that their jobs have met their expectations. They exhibit higher creative and extra-role performances. In short, CA is a mediator between HPWPs and the aforementioned employee outcomes. Practical implications Management should invest in HPWPs to enable employees to manage various work- and career-related demands. Management should also create an environment where employees can take advantage of career opportunities for growth and development. In this environment, employees can prepare themselves for the future in the current organization and gain new skills. Originality/value What is known about the factors influencing Savickas’s (2005) notion of CA and CA influencing various employee outcomes is limited.
