Abstract:

Il fulmine rappresenta il meccanismo con cui una nube scarica parzialmente parte della propria energia. Nel corso degli anni, questo singolare evento è stato un centro di particolare interesse. Difatti, esso è associato a fenomeni intensi quali tempeste e a ingenti danni a strutture, agricolutura e a ciò che fa parte della vita di tutti i giorni. Di recente, i fenomeni di fulminazione ricevono attenzione dalla comunità scientifica perché, dal punto di vista fisico, i meccanismi di formazione di questi eventi non sono del tutto chiari. Inoltre i fulmini e l'aumento della frequenza di fulminazione possono essere sintomi di cambiamenti climatici sia globali sia locali e che siano positivamente correlati all'aumento di temperatura, di concentrazione di ossido d'azoto, di PM10 e ozono nell'aria, conseguentemente all'aumento di aree urbane e al riscaldamento globale. Studi mostrano una relazione tra occorenza di fulminazioni e uso del suolo in più località europee; altri ne esplicitano la reale dipendenza con le caratteristiche orografiche del territorio. Questo elaborato e il lavoro che lo caratterizza sono rivolti all'approfondimento e allo studio di una possibile dipendenza tra densità di fulminazione e caratteristiche del suolo nel Gran Sasso abruzzese. Una parte introduttiva chiarisce le cause fisiche che portano alla formazione dei fulmini, la loro classificazione e le tecniche di rilevazione del fenomeno. In seguito, sono esposte le reti di fulminazione, in particolare la rete LINET, le loro principali caratteristiche e le possibili applicazioni dei dati di fulminazione in fisica dell'atmosfera. La sezione principale della tesi è dedicata ad un'analisi statistica di dati di fulminazione, di dati del suolo, di quota e pendenza, in modo da investigare possibili correlazioni positive tra caratteri del suolo, orografici e ambientali e densità di fulminazioni nella regione di interesse.

Abstract:

Diverse osservazioni, su scala astronomica e cosmologica, suggeriscono l'esistenza di Materia Oscura e che questa componga quasi il 90% della materia nell'Universo. Le particelle candidate più promettenti sono le Weakly Interacting Massive Particle. La loro rivelazione è difficile a causa della piccola sezione d'urto prevista; l'osservazione di Materia Oscura necessita quindi di rivelatori ultra puri e ultrasensibili, situati in ambienti in cui i segnali di fondo possano essere ridotti. Il progetto XENON, ai Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, si pone l'obiettivo di rivelare direttamente le interazioni della Materia Oscura con rivelatori costituiti da una Time Projection Chamber contenente Xeno. La fase attuale del progetto è XENON1T; i primi risultati non hanno evidenziato eventi dovuti a Materia Oscura, permettendo invece di fissare un limite per la sezione d'urto WIMP-nucleo, indipendente dallo spin e di migliorare quelli precedentemente ottenuti. Con lo scopo di aumentare ulteriormente la sensibilità, ed eventualmente confermare un'osservazione da parte di XENON1T, la collaborazione sta lavorano alla fase successiva, prevista per il 2019: XENONnT. Per ridurre il fondo dovuto a neutroni generati dai materiali del rivelatore è in progetto un sistema di Veto di Neutroni basato su scintillatore liquido dopato con Gadolinio (Gd). Tale rivelatore è completato da 120 Fotomoltiplicatori, ovvero dispositivi in grado di convertire il segnale luminoso in un segnale di corrente analizzabile e amplificabile. In questo lavoro di tesi saranno riportati i risultati di primi test di funzionalità di PMT 8" Hamamatsu R5912-100WA-D30, effettuati presso i laboratori dell'Università e della Sezione INFN di Bologna. In particolare è stato misurato il guadagno di tre PMT campione e lo si è confrontato con i valori forniti dalla casa produttrice, allo scopo di valutare un possibile utilizzo dei PMT nel futuro Veto di Neutroni di XENONnT.

Abstract:

In Sasso Marconi, sul Colle Ameno, nasce, nel primo Settecento, grazie all’opera di filippo Carlo Ghisilieri, un borgo ideale fondato sul pensiero illuminista. Tale borgo si proponeva come un connubio tra arti e mestieri, tra lavoro privato e vita collettiva, anelando a divenire nel tempo un esempio rappresentativo e raffinato della ritrovata sensibilità intellettuale e morale dell’epoca. Dopo più d’un secolo dalla sua nascita, l’equilibrato ecosistema che ivi si era creato svanì ed il borgo, congelato nel tempo, attraversò più d’un secolo di quasi totale abbandono per poi giungere ai drammatici eventi della Seconda guerra mondiale. Oggi, grazie ad uno stretto dialogo con il comune di Sasso Marconi, questa tesi di laurea si propone di avanzare una proposta di valorizzazione del borgo attraverso una visione illuminista, che si materializza in un’attualizzazione funzionale e nel consolidamento a rudere di villa Ghisilieri. Per quanto concerne la valorizzazione essa si traduce in una rifunzionalizzazione di alcuni corpi di fabbrica del borgo nel tentativo di creare attrattori culturali e sociali tali da far riemergere, in veste moderna, l’equilibrio illuministico che il Ghisilieri per molti decenni ricercò. L’analisi funzionale e il miglioramento della fruibilità del borgo si sono tradotte poi nel consolidamento di villa Ghisilieri per cui viene previsto un intervento che si pone come obbiettivo il restauro a rudere. Quest’ultimo, matura sulla base del principio di minimo intervento, nel tentativo di rispettare e salvaguardare l’autenticità degli elementi costitutivi attraverso integrazioni distinguibili, operazioni quanto più possibili reversibili al fine ultimo della salvaguardia del rudere. Il processo di formulazione segue dunque un percorso critico di analisi, indagini metodologiche ben circostanziate alle diverse tematiche prese in analisi, e produce una soluzione attuale ed in linea con le reali necessità comunali.

Abstract:

The Besano Formation consists of an alternation of laminated dolomitic banks and bituminous shales, and sparse cineritic tuffs that are dated as Late Anisian–Early Ladinian. It is one of the richest fossil-bearing formations from the Monte San Giorgio area; on the Italian side of Monte San Giorgio, the Sasso Caldo site is the one from which the greatest part of the Besano collection housed at the Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano is from. This Ph.D. thesis aims to the study of the Besano Formation macrofauna, through biochronostratigraphic zonation of the Sasso Caldo Site, revision of the large ichthyosaur Besanosaurus leptorhynchus), and study of the most important specimens, chosen for their preservation and rarity, but also to test the hypothesis of variations in the influence of open sea on the Besano basin. All the available ammonoids and bivalves from the Sasso Caldo site (Besano Formation), housed in the collections of the Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano, were examined and determined. The systematic study led to the recognition of 15 ammonoid taxa belonging to 10 genera, and five species belonging to the bivalve genus Daonella. The study of bed-by-bed collected specimens allowed the biochronostratigraphic classification of the Sasso Caldo section and the time-calibration of invertebrate and vertebrate bioevents. Results evidence that at Sasso Caldo site crops out almost the entire middle to upper Besano Formation. corresponding the Nevadites secedensis ammonoid zone. The trend of distribution of specimens reflects the establishment of an intraplatform basin with discontinuous open-marine influence in the middle Besano Formation, while the upper Besano Formation corresponds to a shallower subtidal restricted platform environment. Among the terrestrial taxa recovered at Sasso Caldo from the upper Besano Formation, a remarkably well-preserved fossil scorpion (BES SC 1973) is described in this thesis. This finding corroborates the hypothesized existence of a near shoreline during the deposition of the upper Besano Formation. BES SC 1973 is assigned to a new taxon gen. et sp. nov., included in the family Protobuthidae. This finding represents the first arachnid recorded from the Besano Formation, and the second genus attributed to the family Protobuthidae. This specimen is also the first reported Italian Mesozoic fossil scorpion. Regarding vertebrates, MSNM V927 and 928, a portion of the axial skeleton of a large diapsid, is attributed to Helveticosaurus zollingeri, a rare diapsid known only from the Besano Formation. This animal was recovered in association with the ammonoid Ticinites, at the base of the N. secedensis Zone, in coincidence with the establishment of the intraplatform basin of the middle Besano Formation. This specimen is the first record of skeletal remains and the second specimen assigned to the taxon in Italy. In this work the niche occupied by this animal in the Middle Triassic coastal ecosystems and its swimming style are also revised and discussed. MSNM V926, and SMNS 50010, respectively a portion of ribcage and an isolated partial forefin of a large ichthyosaur, were attributed to Cymbospondylus buchseri. MSNM V926 represents the first specimen attributed to this taxon and recovered on the Italian side of Monte San Giorgio. A great part of this thesis is dedicated to the revision of Besanosaurus leptorhynchus. The specimens studied and attributed to Besanosaurus leptorhynchus preserve a remarkably complete cranial and postcranial anatomy so that this taxon can be now accounted among the best-understood Middle Triassic ichthyosaur taxa. The revision of the skull morphology of this taxon clarified long-standing controversies regarding its cranial anatomy and the taxonomy of shastasaurids from Monte San Giorgio. The six specimens here described represent a potential ontogenetic series composed of an embryo (inside the maternal cavity of BES SC 999), likely two subadults, and four adults. They can be ordered by increasing size as follows: embryonic material of BES SC 999, PIMUZ T 4376, PIMUZ T 1895, BES SC 999, BES SC 1016, GPIT 1793/1, PIMUZ T 4847. Also, Besanosaurus resulted the largest Middle Triassic ichthyosaur taxon of the Western Tethys to date, since a full adult size is confidently estimated to be almost 8 m in PIMUZ T 4847. Besanosaurus is characterized by a long, slender, and gracile snout, representing an ecological specialization never seen before the Anisian in a large-sized diapsid. The study of the postcranial anatomy of Besanosaurus leptorhynchus is based on four specimens: PIMUZ T 4376, PIMUZ T 1895, BES SC 999, PIMUZ T 4847. The results suggest that this taxon possesses a peculiar bauplan, which in its proportions fits in between Cymbospondylus and the shastasaur-grade ichthyosaurs. Swimming capabilities of Besanosaurus leptorhynchus were tested and compared with Cymbospondylus and Mixosaurus. Among the ichthyosaurs from the Besano-Monte San Giorgio fauna (Cymbopondylus, mixosaurids, and Besanosaurus), different hunting strategies, demonstrated by different morphologies and dimensions of the rostra, as well as different body proportions and swimming styles, should have led to niche partitioning. The key phylogenetic position occupied by Besanosausurus leptorhynchus in the ichthyosaurian phylogeny was investigated: the analysis shows that this taxon represents the basalmost member of shastasaur-grade ichthyosaurs, recovered to be a paraphyletic group. Eventually is addressed a study of the embryonic material preserved in BES SC 999. We deem the material in the body cavity of BES SC 999 unambiguously embryonic and attributable to Besanosaurus leptorhynchus. Here the embryonic material is described in detail and qualitatively compared with the maternal specimen and to other known ichthyosaur prenatal specimens.

La desertification des regions de moyenne montagne provoque une modification plus ou moins rapide de la vegetation, a la fois de facon quantitative (modification des surfaces de certaines formations vegetales) et qualitative (changements dans la composition floristique). L'objectif de ce travail est la recherche d'une methode permettant la mise en evidence des modalites des successions vegetales, des vitesses d'evolution et des facteurs intervenant sur la vegetation apres abandon plus ou moins ancien. La premiere partie, theorique, est consacree a la definition de l'objet d'etude et de son environnement, a la formalisation de la demarche et a la mise au point d'outils permettant la gestion des donnees a differentes echelles d'observation spatiales et temporelles (systeme d'information geographique et systeme de gestion de base de donnees relationnelle). La deuxieme partie est l'application de la methode choisie aux deux bassins-versants du sasse et du grand vallon ; elle est structuree en deux etapes complementaires. L'etude de la succession des etats du tapis vegetal est d'abord realisee en insistant sur l'importance du passe de la vegetation, passe indissociablement lie a l'histoire des populations humaines, ce qui permet de comprendre la repartition actuelle du tapis vegetal. Les successions vegetales sont reconstituees de facon synchronique dans deux massifs peu heterogenes. Abstract:

Numerous and convincing are the experimental evidences that led to the believe that most of the Universe is constituted by the so-called Dark Matter (DM). Its research has attracted many experimental efforts to the point of being considered the greatest mystery of physics. The most promising candidates to DM are generically named as WIMPs, an acronym for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles.The detectors that have reached the most competitive sensitivity levels have in common the characteristics of being built with ultrapure materials and located underground, shielded from cosmic rays. The XENON project,located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). The XENON1T experiment employed a dual-phase Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with 2t of xenon active mass. The next step of the detector is XENONnT, and is currently in the final assembling stage. With a bigger TPC containing 6t of xenon active mass, the main goal is to improve the detection potential for WIMPs by increasing the sensitivity of one order of magnitude in five years of data taking. That result can be achieved only with a substantial background lowering attained with a reduction of the contaminants of the xenon as well as of the detector materials and finally, with the Neutron Veto system (nVeto); the latter is a detector which tags the radiogenic neutrons coming from the materials of the experiment. The nVeto will employ the gadolinium-loaded water technology to significantly enhance the neutron capture cross-section. It will be instrumented with 120 8'' Hamamatsu R5912 photomultipliers (PMT) featuring high quantum efficiency and low radioactivity. Most of the work done to design and realize the nVeto is the argument of this thesis. In addition, an extensive study of the nVeto PMT performance has been done in a dedicated experimental setup at the LNGS. The complete description of the setup,as well as the results of the nVeto PMT tests, is the other big topic of this thesis.

Abstract:

The study of target species sounds (Bioacoustics) and as well as of all sounds that constitute the whole acoustic environment of an ecosystem (Ecoacoustics) has proved to be a valid and powerful tool for the monitoring and conservation of biodiversity and the assessment of habitat quality, collecting long-term information on animal distribution and variations in community dynamics, including those driven by anthropogenic activities. Through Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) of a habitat, it is possible to obtain a picture of the Soundscape that consists of three different components: the sounds produced by animals (biophony), the sounds of atmospheric and physical events (geophony) and the noises linked to the presence of man (anthropophony or technophony). But if on the one hand, the PAM allows new research perspectives for the biodiversity monitoring, since it is possible to record continuously and simultaneously different locations, on the other one, it generates a huge quantity of data that needs to be analyzed and interpreted, implying great time and knowledge efforts to get useful information. The new challenge is to draw up an analysis methodology to optimize resources both in the field (saving memory cards and batteries) both in the lab, reducing time and effort of analyses, while maintaining high the accuracy of the information. The aim of this Ph.D. project is to define the methodological and analytical Research Protocol to investigate the Soundscape at multi time and space scales with ecoacoustic analysis procedures. This elaborated protocol is composed of four main sections: 1. selection of surveys sites; 2. data collection (devices programming and sampling methodology); 3. qualitative analysis of acoustic data (generation of compact daily spectrograms); 4. quantitative analysis of acoustics data (bioacoustic analysis and sound identification; ecoacoustic indices and statistical analysis). By the application of this protocol, it is possible to describe the soundscape of a well-protected integral nature reserve internationally known for its conservation and biodiversity. From a five-year SABIOD’s archive of sound recordings, collected in the Integral Natural Reserve of Sasso Fratino and surrounding areas of Casentinesi Forests National Park (Italy), acoustic data are compared with cross-sections (horizontal) and time series (vertical) analyses in order to explore the soundscape’s spatial-temporal dynamics across different scales. All sites are characterized by quiet nights and very acoustically dense daylight hours, with a composite biophony occupying the range 1500 to 9000 Hz. But, although the acoustics indices trends are similar, the statistical Principal Component Analysis shows that the sites inside and outside the reserve are well differentiated and distinctly clustered in distinct sonotopes, and this could be due to biophony's different components and to their ecological and spatial heterogeneity. Besides to be a tool for research and conservation, the soundscape can also be considered as an object of study. Hence, the analysis of the single components of the Soundscape (geophony, biophony and anthropophony) is performed separately. Each of them represents an important and rich source of information in the environmental acoustic recording. Improving the knowledge of geophony allows to better discrimination of recordings according to different weather conditions and this can contribute to reducing analyses time for large size of data (e.g. by discarding rainy days). The monitoring of biophony increases the information about the biodiversity while the analysis of anthropophony aims to estimate the level of disturbance.

Abstract:

Founding member of a banking network related to the actual BNP Paribas Group, Meyer Joseph Cahen (1804-1881), adopted the “d’Anvers” when he settled in Paris in 1849. Born in Bonn, of an Ashkenazi family, he made his fortune in the Belgian city to which he associated his name, and he continued his career in France. Owner of Nainville’s castle (Essonne) and of the Petit Hôtel de Villars (Paris), he became a naturalized French citizen in 1865. The next year, he obtained the title of Count, bestowed upon him by the King of Italy Victor-Emmanuel II, thanks to the economic support he offered to the Italian Unification. Nineteen years later, King Humbert I surpassed his predecessor and raised Meyer Joseph’s eldest son, Édouard (1832-1894), to the status of Marquis of Torre Alfina. If his siblings – Emma (1833-1901), Louis (1837-1922), Raphaël (1841-1900) and Albert (1846-1903) – enrooted their pathways in the French capital, the eldest lived between Florence, Naples and Rome: he was one of the great investors involved in the urban renovation of the Italian capital, after the fall of the papacy. In France, as well as in Italy, art, and especially architecture, served to legitimize the recent nobility of a family that wished to express the fullness of its civil rights. As targets of the anti-Semitic press, the Cahen d’Anvers family experienced the consequences of the Dreyfus Affair and the horrors of the racial laws. Before the latter, they adopted what could be defined as a “top-down model of integration”. This thesis focuses on its mechanisms and development. After tracing the patriarch’s origins, it analyses the family’s matrimonial policies and it continues with an exploration of Cahen d’Anvers’ “choices” in the vast field of culture. In their salons, the readers will meet Guy de Maupassant, Paul Bourget, Marcel Proust and Gabriele D’Annunzio, as well as Auguste Renoir and Léon Bonnat. Twelve mansions offered a perfect stage for these intellectual gatherings. As a public manifestation of the family’s economic and social power, the historicist eclecticism of these properties aimed to represent the owners as a new phalanx of the old nobility. While Forge-Philippe’s manor (Wallonia), Gérardmer’s chalet (Vosges) and Villa della Selva (Umbria) expressed a certain openness to the twentieth century novelties, the three residences rented by the family (Hôtel du Plessis-Bellière, Paris; Palazzo Núñez-Torlonia, Rome; Château de la Jonchère, Yvelines) and the two properties of Meyer Joseph, as well as Rue de Bassano’s mansion (Paris) or the castles of Champs (Seine-et-Marne), Bergeries (Essonne) and Torre Alfina (Latium) dressed up their nineteenth century spaces with Ancien Régime motifs. Thanks to their historical knowledge and taste, the architects Destailleur, Giuseppe Partini and Eugène Ricard, as well as the landscapers Henri and Achille Duchêne, were able to bend the Middle Age, the Renaissance and the 18th century’s “grammars” to their patrons’ taste and ambitions.
