Abstract:
Extracting information from scattering data is very sensitive to the quality of the data. In this chapter data quality characterization is described, including initial data processing procedures to alert the user to potential data quality issues. Accurate buffer subtraction is crucial for correct modeling and analysis of SAS data, and mechanisms for identifying buffer subtraction errors are discussed. Examining SAS parameters such as a function of concentration or exposure is very useful for identifying concentration dependent artifacts or radiation damage that, if unnoticed, can be very detrimental to further analysis, including misinterpreting the results and drawing erroneous conclusions. SAS is often used for analyzing flexible molecules in solution that may be difficult to study with other structural techniques. Qualitative and quantitative assessments of flexibility are described.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter we illustrate the biological applications of small angle scattering. We cover examples of contrast matching has been used in the neutron case and with SAXS,. time-resolved studies that have helped reveal mechanism and how SAXS or SANS as a solution technique can access information missing from other studies, in particular residues that may be crystallographically undefined. We show examples of puting known structural information in context, and following large-scale functional changes or show when distinct populations co-exist in solution. The list of examples provided is not exhaustive and should be seen as a glimpse of the potential of biological mechanisms where SAXS or SANS can provide unique information complementary to other methods and help define function and mechanism.

Full text
Abstract:
The musteloids are the most speciose of the carnivorans and have a global distribution. They display a wide diversity of morphological and physiological form and function, which have been shaped by their adaptation to a wide variety of ecological niches, ranging from the Arctic to the tropics and deserts to the seas. This chapter explores how several morphological and physiological adaptations are key to their successful diversification, including an elongated body, a highly insulating pelage, powerful teeth and jaws, anal sacs for olfactory communication or chemical defence, and reproductive physiologies that allow females to optimise their reproductive output. While many of these adaptations are shared by other carnivorans, it is their combination in musteloids that has allowed them to diversify so successfully globally.

Ludwig, Kirk. Status Functions as Agentive Functions. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198789994.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 8 begins the analysis of status functions by locating them within the broader category of agentive functions. It starts with a taxonomy of agentive functions that relies on the different bases on which we attribute them and places them in relation to the overlapping category of artefacts. Then it identifies status functions as a subcategory and analyzes them as arising from the need for agents to coordinate on, or collectively accept, the same things as filling roles in joint activities defined by constitutive rules. It distinguishes between status functions attached to types and to tokens. Finally, it considers the status of counterfeits, how we understand activities into which they are introduced, and what to say when an agent intends to introduce a counterfeit but mistakenly uses the real thing.

Simon, Jonathan. Fragmenting the Wave Function. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198828198.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper develops and defends a new account of B-theoretic endurantism and a new account of the metaphysics of the quantum state, and highlights the parallels between the considerations that motivate them. These new accounts are both fragmentalist, in the sense that they follow Fine (2005) in invoking a symmetric coordination relation between facts, such that facts that are pairwise incompatible (like Hugh?s being happy and Hugh?s being sad) can both obtain provided that they are not related by this relation. However, while Fine allows that fragments can be logically incoherent—P can obtain in one fragment while ØP obtains in another—the fragmentalist accounts defended here are motivated even if we insist on logical coherence between fragments.

Full text
Abstract:
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be used to probe the excitability of central nervous system pathways before, during, and after a movement. In addition, it can be used to interfere with movement and give information about the role of different cortical areas in different aspects of a task. This article reviews the work that has been carried out using TMS measures to probe the excitability of central circuits before and after different types of contraction in healthy subjects. In some cases the results confirm previous work on animals, which means that the same measures can be used to investigate the pathophysiology in human neurological disease. However, many results reveal new information that had not previously been described in experiments on animals. Therefore, it is not wrong to say that TMS measures can be used to describe in humans what has already been described in animals; they can become drivers of new concepts as well.

Abstract:
This article says something about previous work related to truth and meaning, goes on to discuss Davidson (1967) and related papers of his, and then discusses some issues arising. It begins with the work of Gottlob Frege. Much work in the twentieth century developed Frege's ideas. A great deal of that work continued with the assumption that semantics is fundamentally concerned with the assignments of entities (objects, sets, functions, and truth-values) to expressions. So, for example, those who tried to develop a formal account of sense did so by treating senses as functions of various kinds; the sense of a predicate, for example, was often seen as a function from possible worlds to extensions.

Healey, Richard. Overview: A New Kind of Science. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198714057.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This overview introduces the book’s aim of showing how quantum theory marks a radical break from previous scientific theorizing: We are warranted in accepting the fundamental status within contemporary physics of a theory that posits no new physical entities or magnitudes of its own. By contrast with existing interpretations that attempt to say how the world could possibly be the way quantum theory says it is, a pragmatist takes understanding quantum theory to be a matter of knowing how it is applied, and how the theory’s various elements function in these applications. So Part I of the book offers a simple, self-contained presentation of quantum theory, emphasizing applications; while Part II says why the quantum revolution matters for philosophy. Coming to terms with the quantum revolution involves adopting views of scientific theorizing, probability, causation, explanation, objectivity, meaning, and fundamentality that philosophers should have arrived at without its prompting.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes in detail the location, energetic function, and special features of each point in six principal Yang channels: Large Intestine, Small Intestine, San Jiao, Stomach, Gallbladder, and Bladder. It emphasizes that the unique features of each point come from its association with specific organs and five elements in addition to its connection with other energy channels. The clinical indications for mental and physical dysfunctions due to channel blockages and organ energetic imbalance are only some examples of the clinical use of these points. After reading this chapter, the practitioner should be able to expand his or her usage based on the features and functions of these points.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter looks at how the media explained, critiqued, and reported on their own role in the branding and coverage of the Tea Party, and what that says about news media function and convergence in a headphone culture. Whether it was a “media war” on Fox News, a reporter’s rant at CNBC, or a defamatory online video triggering the dismissal of a high-ranking Obama appointee for “racism,” one thing was clear—at its core, Tea Party news narratives were also a story about modern journalism. This section of the book explains how members of the news media portrayed (implicitly and explicitly) their own roles, functions, and values as they advanced the Tea Party’s recognition, messaging, and growth through the logics, action, and discourse of branding.
