Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2015. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201501161020.

Abstract:
Tutkin Dome Karukosken Napapiirin sankarit -elokuvan (2010) representoimia erilaisia maskuliinisuuksia. Analysoin eritoten kotinurkkiin majailemaan jääneiden, syrjäytyneiden ja työttömien miesten — niin sanottujen peräkammarin poikien — maskuliinisuutta ja heidän muuttumistaan elokuvan esittämän vuorokauden aikana. Käytin kehittelemääni peräkammarimaskuliinisuuden termiä analysoidakseni tarkemmin mieshahmoja ja heidän ”muuttujiaan”. Hyödynsin Jukka Sankalan (2009 & 2011) tutkimuksia Lapin peräkammarin poikamiesten arjesta ja identiteettikäsityksistä. Lähdekirjallisuutena käytin myös kriittisten maskuliinisuuksien tutkimuksia sekä elokuvatutkimuksen teorioita, joita hyödynsin varsinkin road-genrestä kirjoittaessani. Analysoin Napapiirin sankareita elokuvallisen tekstin lähiluvun kautta. Napapiirin sankarit täyttää road-genren elokuvan merkittävimmät määritelmät: identiteetin uudistamisen tarinassa, jossa lähdetään kotoa ja sinne palataan muuttuneena (Römpötti 2012; Cohan & Hark 1997; Laderman 2002). Napapiirin sankarit on toisaalta kolmen miehen — Jannen, Kapun ja Tapion — kasvukertomus, toisaalta aikalaisdiagnoosi. Elokuva tarjoaa näkökulmia arktisen hysterian ilmiöön, johon liitetään muun maussa synkkyyden, syrjäytymisen ja kuoleman teemoja (Ihonen 1999). Matkan syynä oleva digiboksin hankkiminen on lopulta Jannelle asetettu miehuuskoe: raskaana oleva avopuoliso testaa, onko Jannesta vastuulliseksi isäksi.

Abstract:
This paper is a comparative project between a philosopher from the Western tradition, Aristotle, and a philosopher from the Eastern tradition, Sankara. These two philosophers have often been thought to oppose one another in their thoughts, but I will argue that they are similar in several aspects. I will explore connections between Aristotle and Sankara, primarily in their theories of causation. I will argue that a closer examination of both Aristotelian and Advaita Vedanta philosophy, of which Sankara is considered the most prominent thinker, will yield significant similarities that will give new insights into the thoughts of both Aristotle and Sankara.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to analyse and demonstrate those discursive strategies through which Çaìkara, the famous philosopher of medieval Hinduism (circa 788-820 a.C.), has formulated the monistic doctrine of Advaita-vedänta, to which purpose he has elaborated a dialogical discourse in relation to some of the main dualistic and ritualistic opposing doctrines of his time: the Säàkhya-Yoga-darçana and the Mémäàsä-darçana, respectively. Our analysis of the sanskrit texts in which Çaìkara interprets the vedic scriptures is based on the theories of discourse, on the principles of the French school of Semiotics and also on studies of intertextuality. This inedit analysis intends to: (1) - analyse the inter-relation of concepts in the fundamental level of significance that can build a monistic discourse, in spite of those irreductible binary categories that govern human language and reasoning; (2) - examine those mechanisms of persuasion and argumentation which are constant in Çaìkara\'s writings and which help to build specific interpretations of the vedic scriptures, refuting at the same time the points of view of other doctrines. The first part of the thesis, entitled \"The revelation of One\", gives a synthesis of the cultural heritage which is pressuposed in the reading of Çaìkara\'s writings, and afterwards makes a semiotic analysis, on the fundamental level, of the concept of Absolute or \"one-without-a-second\", Brahman, according to the way it\'s given by the Upaniñad texts and interpreted by Çaìkara. In the second part of the thesis, entitled \"Paths of the Two\", are analysed some of those discoursive and intertextual mechanisms through which the thinker can re-signify and assimilate into his monistic doctrine the relative universe and those binary and ternary categories according to what was postulated by other doctrines of his cultural heritage. The thesis contributes to demonstrate that the theories of discourse are valid instruments in the process of analysis of those mechanisms through which verbal language can create and express abstract concepts which, at first, are not aprehensible in the world of phenomenae. The work has also the purpose of adding to brazilian bibliography, under an inedit approach, texts belonging to an important aspect of sanskrit culture.

Abstract:
The first chapter explores an anachronistic Kantian critique of Plotinus wherein Plotinus' notion of the One and the soul's ascent to the One is discussed. In the second part of the chapter it will be argued that despite Plotinus' via negativa approach to the One, he commits what Kant calls a transcendental illusion. At this time, Kant's conditions of experience and knowledge are discussed, to show what constitutes as experience. Then, Kant's notion of transcendental illusion is discussed, specifically in its paralogistic and ideal forms. From this discussion, it is evident that Plotinus' idea of the soul is a paralogistic error and his idea of the One becomes the Ideal of pure reason, thereby mistaking the Ideal of the One as constituting ultimate existence. Following this Kantian critique, the second chapter discusses Úankara's view of Âtman. The exposition demonstrates that Úankara's approach is essentially via negativa, that while it is the most humble approach to Brahman, yet it is unable to account for the absolute reality that is essentially ineffable. This discussion focuses on Úankara's belief that people falsely attribute or superimpose qualities to the true Self, because of Avidyâ and that only true knowledge transforms Avidyâ into vidyâ or discriminating knowledge. After this discussion, some criticisms are discussed to show some apparent problems with Úankara's view. At which time, it will be argued that despite Úankara's use of via negativa he commits what Kant calls a "transcendental illusion." We do not have an empirical intuition of the concept of Brahman; therefore, we have neither access to the mystical reality of Brahman as a thing in itself, nor to true knowledge about ultimate reality. Thus, Úankara's view engenders transcendental illusion. The final chapter addresses Schelling's idealism and in particular the view of the potencies at work in God, before God was God. Due to creation, an inversion of the potencies occurs and the outer gains control over the inner. Next, elements of Habermas' view are discussed, wherein he holds a materialistic-interactive-idealist position, as indicated in his ideal speech situation. At this time, it will be argued that Habermas' "ideal speech situation" is idealistic like Schelling's position. Consequently, both Schelling and Habermas' reaction respectively make the Primordial Will and the Ideal Speech Situation into an Ideal and in so doing commits a transcendental illusion.

Abstract:
This study is a comparison of the philosophical systems composed by the Indian philosopher Sankara (788-830 CE), and the Muslim mystic, Ibn Arabi (1165-1240 CE). The primary thesis found in this study is that the conceptual systems constructed by Sankara and Ibn Arabi are not perfectly new creations derived from the core of their mystical realizations. Rather, they contain fundamental pre-existing principles, concepts, and teachings that are expanded upon and placed within a systematic philosophy or theology that is intended to lead others to a state of realization. A selection of these presuppositions are extracted from within each of these thinkers’ philosophical systems and employed as structural indicators. Similarities are highlighted, yet the differences between Sankara and Ibn Arabi’s thought, witnessed within their philosophical systems, lead us to the conclusion that the two mystics inhabited different conceptual space.

Abstract:

Paris 10, 2001. http://www.theses.fr/2001PA100066.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a monography of Sankat Mocan, a temple dedicated to the monkey-god Hanumân, in Banaras (North India). It deals with the construction of religiosity through the study of the atmosphere of the temple. The atmosphere may be faithfully conveyed by art. It is often described by observers as an invitation to "come and take a peek". But the atmosphere that devotees incite you to feel as you enter the temple must be understood as a local and effective construction. Apprehending the temple through its atmosphere means starting with what comes before the rite and putting the religiosity back in the emotional context of the hindu bhakti. The temple is the place of certainty. The atmosphere is functional, because the devotee finds there proofs of the undeniable divine presence and because of the role it plays in the construction of religiosity. The atmosphere is a dynamic process at the crossroads of the systematic rationalization of the temple space, and of the individual and spontaneous hindu devotion. It lies between explicit and intentional communication with the divine and that "background noise" with its evocative power. The temple is a totality within itself. If the ritual raison d'être is the only thing considered, the temple is stripped of an important part of its space, of its participants and of its meaning. Not only is it a place of communion with the divine, but the space of the temple also offers an experience of cohabitation with the divine that extends to everyday activities. The temple is the place which makes the permanent communication between men and gods possible. Coming to the temple is treating oneself to the experience of the hindu Golden Age. The atmosphere, a cocktail of various elements, is the product of a local and dynamic construction that characterizes two key-modes of the hindu relationship with the divine in the temple : everyday life and emotional experience

Abstract:

Tabi, Stefania Agyeman <1990&gt. "Pan-Africanism, Neo-colonialism and Non-alignment: similarities and differences in the political thoughts of Kwame Nkrumah and Thomas Sankara." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/7970.

Full text
Abstract:
In the second half of the Twentieth century a distinctive phenomenon crossed through Sub-Saharan Africa that modified not only the geopolitical aspect of the continent, but also the worldly north-south relation. From 1957 until 1990 all African countries had been freed from the burden of colonialism. The new leaders of these countries, who had lead liberation movements in the previous decades, strongly condemned (neo)-colonialism and advocated for a new international order in which African and Asian countries could have a greater voice. Among these leaders, Kwame Nkrumah stands out as he contributed extensively not only with his writings, but also in actions during the 50s and the 60s. During the 80s, one of the most revolutionary leaders towards these thematics will be Thomas Sankara, president of Burkina Faso, who came into power after the fifth political coup in the country since independence from France in 1960. This thesis is a comparison between political thoughts of Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of independent Ghana from 1957 to 1966, and Thomas Sankara. Kwame Nkrumah's foreign policy in Ghana was characterized by three basic aims: to fight against neo-colonialism, work toward the unification of Africa and the maintenance of world peace through a policy of non-alignment. In his book "Neo-colonialism: the last stage of imperialism", he describes neo-colonialism as a more subtle form of imperialism, an economic and cultural exploitation of former colonies by imperial powers. He strongly believed that neo-colonialism in Africa could be completely defeated only with the union of African states. He advocated for a Common African Market and a continental government for Africa. During his presidency in Ghana, the country followed a policy of non-alignment; he believed that African countries should not be under the influence of any of the two blocs that had been formed with the escalation of the cold war. The aim of this thesis is to analyse on what level did Kwame Nkrumah leave a legacy to Thomas Sankara. The latter, hold on strongly to these thematics, in particular to neo-colonialism; what are his argumentations against neo-colonialism, and in favor of pan-africanism, and non-alignment.

Abstract:
Major rivers in developing countries around the world are heavily loaded with pollutants. According to the UN Water Statistics around 2 million tons of waste is dumped into rivers daily. In the developing countries 70 % of the industrial waste is diverted into the water courses without treating daily. In particular in Asia where more than half of the world population is living, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) estimates that five major rivers in Asia aid over 870 million people are the most endanger in the world. In India over the past 50 years the population and economic growth leads to increasing pressure on the water recources. It is expected that the population of India would be 1.4 billion by 2024. Till today wide range of research is being undertaken on the pollution problem of Ganga River. Many scientists and NGOs are trying to study the condition of Ganga water by measuring metals, chemical pollutants, coli form bacteria…etc. Government of India has officially launched Ganga Action Plan (GAP-1) during April 1985 and GAP-2 in February 1991to reduce the pollution of Ganga River. Even though lot of research is going on to decrease the pollution load, no significant change has occurred. The main aim of this project is to identify gaps in current efforts and to suggest measures to sustainably resolve the problem. There are six highly polluted cities on the bank of the river with different type of pollution loads they are Rishikesh, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna and Calcutta. Out of the all the cities Varanasi has a distinctive pollution fill to the river over the belt of the river that you can find a lot of dead bodies flowing on the river. On March 4th 2010, the Government of India approved to implement "Mission Clean Ganga" project to control the pollution sources on Ganga River in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarkhand and West Bengal. Government has approved highest budget to Varanasi, 490.90 Crore Indian Rupees which clearly emphasizes how severally the water is polluted in Varanasi. This situation inspires me to concentrate on Varanasi in my project. During this project I visited Varanasi to study the current situation in collaboration with Sankat Mochan Foundation, a NGO organization whose aim is "Not A Drop Of Sewage In Ganga In The Religious Bathing Area Around It".

It does so first by examining the epistemologies, theologies and worldviews of Sruikara and Riimanuja, and the theology and worldview of classical Christian orthodoxy, so that, second, an adequate foundation and subsequent thorough representation of avatiira and incarnation might be accomplished, in order that, third, accurate comparisons may be drawn between avatiira and incarnation. The result of this study is a demonstration that many of the popularly-held similarities between avatiira and incarnation are superficial, and that therefore careful consideration of epistemol? gies and on:ologies .should ~e undl:$k~~en comparing theologies and soteriologies pertment to avatara and InCarnatIOn.

Williamson, Bryan J. "From Upper Volta to Burkina Faso: A Study of the Politics of Reaction and Reform in a Post-Colonial African Nation-state, 1960-1987." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4612.

Abstract:
Abstract (from thesis text) From Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, is the study of the politics of reaction and reform in a post-colonial nation-state of Burkina Faso. Since its independence from France on 5 August 1960 to 15 October 1987, Burkina Faso, the "land of the upright" people, has experience five changes in government. All of the coups that took place in this twenty-seven year period were reactionary and reforming. However, the most memorable reforms arrived after the coup of 4 August 1983 which gave rise to a youthful president in a thirty-three year old Captain Thomas Sankara. As the leaders before him, Sankara reacted against a post-colonial government that he and supporters saw as inadequate. Unlike the previous coups in the Upper Volta, this work argues that the 4 August 1983 coup brought class consciousness to the forefront. It aimed to establish its identity by changing the country's name from the colonial name of Upper Volta to Burkina Faso. The revolutionaries appeared to be g6enuine in meeting their words with action by working to create self-sufficient citizens, curb environmental depredation, combat corruption in government and provide women more opportunities. Though the Revolution in Burkina Faso (1983-1987) did not end the country's ambitions for a multi-party democracy, it did elevate the status of women, literacy, mortality and pride for the homeland.

Leshoele, Moorosi. "Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance in contemporary Africa: lessons from Burkina Faso’s Thomas Sankara." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/26595.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is about four interrelated key issues, namely, critique of Thomas Sankara as a political figure and erstwhile president of Burkina Faso; examination of Pan-Africanism as a movement, theory, ideology and uniting force for Africans and people of African descent globally; evaluation of leadership and governance lessons drawn from Burkina Faso’s August 1983 revolution, its successes, challenges, and shortcomings, and lastly; it draws socioeconomic and developmental lessons from the Burkina Faso experience under Sankara’s administration during the brief period from 1983 until his untimely assassination on 15 October 1987. The ousting of Blaise Compaore in October 2014 brought to the fore Sankara’s long buried and suppressed legacy, and this is what, in part, led to me deciding to do a systematic and thorough study of Sankara and the Burkina Faso Revolution. Two theories were used in the study – Pan Africanism and Afrocentricity - because they together centre and privilege the African people’s plight and agency and the urgent need for Africans to find solutions to their own problems in the same way Sankara emphasised the need for an independent endogenous development approach in Burkina Faso. Methodologically, a Mixed Methods Research (MMR) approach was employed so as to exploit and leverage the strengths of each individual approach and due to the complex nature of the phenomena studied. The study argues that the nerve centre of developmental efforts in Burkina Faso was a self-propelled, self-centred, and endogenous development model which placed the agency and responsibility, first and foremost, in the hands of Burkinabe people themselves using their own internal resources to improve their lives. Secondly, agrarian reforms were designed in such a way that they formed the bedrock of economic self-reliance and industrial development in Burkina Faso. Lastly, overall findings of the study indicate that the revolutionary cause and intervention in all critical sectors such as education, health, and the economy were prioritised and the pace at which these sectors were overhauled was crucial. Implication of these findings for development in Africa is that development cannot be externally imported either through foreign direct investments or through a straight-jacket policy transfer where African countries often borrow European economic policies and try to implement them in drastically different contexts and historical epochs.

De, Beer Estelle. "A 'family group analysis' (Sankaran) evaluation of a triple-blind homoeopathic drug proving of Erythrina Lysistemon 30CH." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/1987.

Abstract:
Dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's Degree in Technology: Homeopathy, Durban University of Technology, 2007.
The aim of this analytical study was to determine the effects of the thirtieth centesimal (30CH) potency of the bark of Erythrina Lysistemon on healthy individuals with the subsequent analysis of the proving data obtained according to Sankaran's model! theory of vital sensations and miasms, so that it may be prescribed according to the Law of Similars, as required by homoeopathic science. Thirty-two healthy volunteers who met all the inclusion criteria participated in this study (Appendix A - Suitability for Inclusion). All volunteers were required to sign a consent form (Appendix B). Forty (40) percent (12 of the 32) of the subjects received placebo in a randomised fashion. This was a triple-blind, placebo controlled study where neither the researchers nor the individuals participating in the study knew who received placebo or verum. The provers were unaware of the nature of the substance they were taking and the researchers were unaware of the nature of the substance that they were administrating. The provers recorded their state prior to the administration of the proving substance to establish a baseline from which their state after taking the proving substance was compared (Appendix D - Instructions to Provers). Data collection took the format of a diary or journal in which the provers recorded their symptoms daily and from which the data was later extracted. Data from
