This article discusses the question of the influence and potential of Christianity in contemporary secularized culture. I take as my starting point the twofold thesis that ‘God is dead’ and ‘Christianity survived the death of God’. In section 1 and 2 I demonstrate how Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault have elaborated this thesis in a somewhat similar manner by criticising the ideological workings of what in the words of Nietzsche could be called the Christian ‘will to truth’. In section 3 I argue that Slavoj Žižek’s recent engagement with theology allow for another reading of the Christian truth-seeking, which in contrast brings out a potential for a critique of ideology. The difference between these two readings can be summarized as two interpretations of the famous words in The Gospel of John, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Thus, Christianity does not only entail the suppressive danger of an obligation to tell the truth about oneself at any prize, it also offers the liberating prospective in being true to the manifestation of the death of God on the cross.

The Exhausted Truth and the True Inexhaustibility
What are the relations between images and truth? How can truth be represented? In the
article “The Exhausted Truth and the True Inexhaustibility”, the German romanticist and
philosopher Friedrich Schlegel’s theories concerning the great value and unmeasurable
importance of the endless, the unintelligible, and the inexhaustible serves as the opening
to a discussion of what is to be understood by the question of truth. Does truth pertain
to the forever unsayable domains of the oblique and evasive – that which must remain
outside the firm grasp of enlightenment and understanding? Or, on the contrary, is truth
that which not only can be enframed, but also reproduced and represented? The discussion
of this question brings forth a fundamental divide between Schlegel’s and Romanticism’s
idealizations of the creative and vitalistic transgressions of the human limits of
understanding and the boundaries set up in the names of enlightenment and knowledge.
As argued in the article, this divide would also describe a discrepancy between, on the one
hand, a contemplative search into the unknown depths of the world, and, on the other

hand, the desire to bring into light, into form, and into image. The Information Age in
which we are said to live today would appear to provide us first and foremost with the

Præsten og Loke: Grundtvigs apologetiske dialog i “Om Christendommens Sandhed”[The Pastor vs. Loke: Grundtvig ’s apologetic dialogue in his “On the truth of Christianity ”]By Troels NøragerDue to the fact that Grundtvig propagated a basically pre-modern conception of Christianity, apologetics constitute an integral part of his theological writings. So far, however, Grundtvig’s apologetic discourse (and its strategies) has not received the scholarly attention that it deserves. This article takes as its test case a rather lengthy (ca. 40 pages) dialogue, which Grundtvig inserted into his major apologetic work, “On the truth of Christianity”. The dialogue features a true Christian minister (Grundtvig himself) and his adversary, “Loke”, a representative of contemporary rationalist-deist Christianity. It is demonstrated how the themes of the dialogue cluster around the Apostolic Creed, thus reflecting Grundtvig’s theological turn dating from 1825. In particular, the focus is on Grundtvig’s pervasive (but, alas, less than persuasive) use of principium contradictionis as his major apologetic tool. It is demonstrated that there remains in Grundtvig an unresolved tension between the inherent epistemological nature of this principle and Grundtvig’s desire to employ it to bolster his own exclusively theological (and ontological) concept of truth.

Når vi har lært at genkende bullshit-kernen i fake news-anklager, kan vi forsøge at følge George Lakoffs framing-anbefaling om at undlade at reproducere og dermed styrke dem unødigt. I nogle tilfælde kan man måske have held med rammende og præcist at påpege bullshit, hvor det forekommer. Men det forudsætter dels en forståelse for, hvad bullshit er, og hvordan det virker, og dels at folk allerede har blik for værdien af sandhed og sandfærdighed. Så kampen mod fake news kan næppe vindes på kort sigt, men kræver både udbredt demokratisk dannelse og en veletableret sandhedsværdsættende kultur.

Retorikken har i de senere år været genstand for en fornyet interesse, ikke mindst som sprogligt redskabsfag til forbedring og effektivisering af f.eks. politisk og kommerciel kommunikation. I denne artikel argumenterer Søren Kjørup for, at retorikken også har en mere grundlæggende analytisk og videnskabsteoretisk relevans. Roland Barthes forsøgte i 1960´erne at introducere retoriske aspekter i semiotikken, men da semiotikkens erken- delsesinteresse og epistemologi er en grundlæggende anden end retorik- kens, lykkedes denne integration ikke. I artiklen introduceres retorikkens samlede lærebygning, og der argumenteres for, at retorikkens videnska- belige grundsyn er en parallel til den amerikanske pragmatiske filosofi. Set i dette lys kan retorikken birage til udvikling af en mere konstruktiv videnskabsfilosofi, der gør sig fri af tidligere dikotomier mellem objektivitet og subjektivitet, absolut sandhed og den rene relativisme.

”Byer laver ikke udenrigspolitik”. Det har været den officielle sandhed om de danske byer og kommuners internationale samarbejde i mange år. Ofte har der været referereret til kommunalfuldmagten, som angiveligt skulle forhindre byer i at beskæftige sig medudenrigspolitiske anliggender. Men måske er tiden kommet til at genoverveje, hvilken rolle de danske byer spiller i dansk udenrigspolitik. De danske byers engagement i Ukraine synes at være et god illustration af, at danske byer er endog særdeles villige tilat bidrage til den samlede danske udenrigspolitiske indsats. Casen illustrerer også, at både Folketinget og regeringen er meget interesserede i at engagere de danske byer i dansk udenrigspolitik. Endelig demonstreres, at kommunalfuldmagten er ganske dynamisk og i stadig større udstrækning åbner op for, at danske byer engagerer sig i og bidrager til dansk udenrigspolitik.

Med afsæt i socialkonstruktivistisk og narrativ fortælle- og historieteori undersøges 10 praksisfortællinger om konflikter i børnehaven med fokus på narrativet ’Han slår!’. Undersøgelsen er båret af ideen om, at vi fortæller vores verden frem i samspil, at mening er af relationel karakter, og at børns fortællinger om konflikter kan anskues som led i deres legekulturelle interaktioner. Analysestrategisk set forstås da en bestemt dreng som både et faktisk barn og som en legekulturel figur, der agerer monomytisk som prygelknabe. En sammenstilling og tolkning af de 10 fortællinger viser, hvordan børnene bl.a. gennem emplotment skaber en verdensfortælling om børnehaven, som den pædagogiske medarbejder bliver en del af, men ikke nødvendigvis forstår og derfor heller ikke kan integrere i sine refleksioner-i-handling, men som tegner sig gennem sådanne refleksioner-over-handling, som artiklen præsenterer. Begreberne om krønike- og historieskrivning anvendes for at belyse, hvor vanskeligt det er at bestemme sandhedsværdien af hverdagskonflikter i børnehaven i forhold til parametre som fiktiv/faktisk, krønike/historie, legekulturel/sociokulturel, sandhed/løgn. Hvad foregår der her? er et spørgsmål, der vil blive besvaret forskelligt, afhængigt af hvem vi hver især tilkender retten til at agere som politi, advokat og dommer.

In 1737 Erik Pontoppidan, a Danish bishop of pietist leanings, published a Lutheran catechism,Sandhed til Gudfrygtighed(Truth unto Godliness), which became the Church of Denmark's official catechism for the following fifty years, with new editions being printed in Norway into the twentieth century. For a figure largely overlooked by modern scholarship, he has enjoyed an extraordinarily lengthy influence over Christian formation in Scandinavia and in Norwegian immigrant communities in the USA. Pontoppidan not only left behind this ‘official’ programme of Christian education, but also an unofficial blueprint,Menoza(1742–3). Thisopbyggelse(‘edifying’) novel recounts the conversion of an imaginary Indian prince, Menoza, and his subsequent travels around Europe.Menozamight even be said to offer its readers an alternative or additional Lutheran catechism in literary form. This article examines Menoza's Christian formation in the light of Pontoppidan's official catechism. Which topics of the catechism receive emphasis or are downplayed? Does the progression and linking of doctrinal topics match the catechism's layout or does the author restructure Christian theology for pedagogical purposes? The article also considers the non-doctrinal elements of the characters’ catechesis, especially in relation to pietist expectations regarding conversion. What indoctrination, intentional or unintentional, into the vocabulary and experience of pietist culture did Pontoppidan offer his Scandinavian readers?

In Memory of Tord Ehnevid, 1922 - 2000By Gert NilssonDoctor of divinity Gert Nilsson’s obituary of the Swedish Grundtvig scholar Tord Ehnevid begins with a presentation of Ehnevid’s background and his point of departure. Ehnevid was bom into an evironment characterized partly by revivalist piety, partly by Swedish State Church tradition, a fact which came to influence his later research. Tord Ehnevid studied theology at Lund and took holy orders in 1947. After working as a clergyman for some years, continuing his studies at the same time, he became a curate in Trelleborg in 1958, and subsequently worked as a grammar school teacher at Söderslatt Grammar School until his retirement.In 1959 his doctoral thesis Församlingsetik Studier over Grundtvig, Morten Pontoppidan och Einar Billing was published. The thesis focuses on the national church and its congregational ethics, comparing important positions in Danish and Swedish theology. In the following years Ehnevid published a number of writings in Grundtvig Studier, such as The dominant Peoples in History according to Grundtvig and Hegel in 1973. In »Vad Sandhed er skal tiden vise«, 1998, Ehnevid deals with the concept of truth, time and ethics in Grundtvig’s works.From the early 1970’s Tord Ehnevid was a member of the Grundtvig society committee. And as late as 1998 he participated in the annual meeting in Århus. With Tord Ehnevid’s decease, a good clergyman, a competent pedagogue and an original interpreter of Danish and Swedish theology has passed away. His ideas and writings will live.

Hvad betyder ‘inskription’? Få spørgsmål forekommer lettere at besvare: en inskription er sprog, som er blevet nedskrevet. Den holder det talte ords flygtighed på afstand og befrier kommunikation fra talens ansigt-til-ansigt-forankring. Det skrevne ord overfører den akustiske sekvens til en visuel konfiguration; det udvider kommunikationen over afstande i tid og rum. At forvandle det talte til det skrevne muliggør ligeledes kontrol, rettelser og kritik, ligesom det åbner for spredning og arkivering af det der kommunikeres som tekst.
Det var nøjagtig debatten omkring ‘mundtlighed og skriftlighed’ (Goody 1968, 1986; Havelock 1976, 1986; Ong 1982)[1] i den sidste tredjedel af det forgangne århundrede, som afdækkede skriftens kreativitet og hævede det skrevne ord til det samme niveau som det talte. Siden da er det talte og det skrevne ord blevet betragtet som to forskellige former for sprog, hver med sin egen ‘performance profil’ i relation til deres mediale, sproglige, og kulturelantropologiske karakter (Echlich 1994; Koch/Oesterreicher 1985, 1994; Olson 1991; Parry 1971; Raible 1991, 1993; Zumthor 1984).
På trods af denne genopdagelse af skriftlighed, er en traditionel antagelse – nærmest en vedtaget sandhed i debatten om skriftlighed – forblevet uudfordret: Troen på skriftens sproglignende karakter. I forbindelse med den almindelige tvedeling mellem sprog og billede, placeres skriften udelukkende inden for sprogets felt. Skrift fortolkes som en form for sprog og ikke som en form for billede. Den i mellemtiden klassiske håndbog Schrift und Schriftlichkeit. Writing and its use (Günther/Ludwig (red.) 1994), opsummerer udfaldet af skriftlighedsdebatten og definerer skrift som “den mængde af skriftlige tegn gennem hvilken et talt sprog optegnes” (Günther/Ludwig (red.) 1994: VIII.; Koch 2009: 58). Vi vil kalde det synspunkt at skrift først og fremmest er en fikseret version af et talt sprog for det fonografiske dogme (Krämer 2003b: 520).

Artiklen bidrager til en familiesociologisk diskussion om, hvordan natur og kultur spiller sammen i forståelsen af de senmoderne familierelationer. På baggrund af et empirisk udvalg af 44 familieberetninger, indsamlet blandt midaldrende danske informanter, udforsker artiklen, hvordan individer inkluderes eller ekskluderes som familiemedlemmer. Gennem beretningens linser fokuserer analysen på, hvordan familier før og nu har håndteret kritiske begivenheder som uægte børn, skilsmissefamilierelationer, genforening af adoptivbørn og konstruktioner af genealogier. Inden for et tidsrum på 50 år identificerer analysen tre skift i opfattelsen af ”rigtige familiebånd”: Omkring 1950 refererer ”rigtig” til normativ konformitet, omkring 1975 er den rigtige familierelation den autentiske, mens ”rigtig” omkring år 2000 konnoterer til videnskabelig sandhed. Selv om disse forståelser af ”rigtige familiebånd” på nogle punkter synes at have afløst hinanden successivt, var de alligevel samtidigt til stede, da dataindsamlingen fandt sted.

Mai Heide Ottosen: Correct and Incorrect Family Relations. On Social Constructions of Genealogy
This article aims to contribute to the academic debate within the field of family and kinship studies that discusses how nature and culture interplay in the perceived constitution of (late) modern family relationships. Based on a sample of 44 case histories of families gathered from middle-aged Danes, the article explores how individuals are included or excluded as family members. Using the narratives, the analysis focuses on how families have handled critical events such as illegitimate children, post-divorce relationships, adoption reunions and constructions of genealogies, both in the present and the past. The article identifies three shifts in the perception of what “proper family ties” mean over a span of 50 years. In 1950 “proper” refers to normative conformity; in 1975 the proper family relationship was what is authentic; while in 2000 “proper” connotes scientific truth. Although these understandings appear to have succeeded each other, they are all still alive today.

Tolkien), i modsætning til den manglende respons på Grundtvigs egen tid. Afhandlingen bygger desuden i høj grad på Andreas Haarders forskningsresultater.I karakteristikken af Grundtvigs tolkning af Bjovulf-drapen peges der på bestemte nøgleord, såsom den prægnante forståelse af ordet, folket, folkelivet o.a., med henblik på de fundamentale vanskeligheder med at finde en dækkende oversættelse til engelsk. Bradley særlig Grundtvigs forståelse af denne side af sit digterkald, at han som historiker, digter og skjald skulle anskueliggøre sammenhængen mellem ’begivenhed’ (den enkelte hændelse i fortiden) og ’bedrift’ (begivenheden set i lyset af universalhistoriens overordnede mønster). Ved at afbilde, hvordan denne forbindelse giver sig udtryk, fortæller Grundtvigs epos noget om sandhed slet og ret, idet den enkelte episode bliver et spejl, hvori vi kan se den ’store’ historie kendetegnet.Historieforståelsen bag dette syn sættes i forhold til Beda Venerabilis’ krønike om den tidligste engelske kirkehistorie. Der er for Bradley ingen tvivl om, at Grundtvigs tolkning af Bjovulf hviler på et religiøst historiesyns fundament, hvori en kristen forsynstanke forener sig med det digterisk gengivne epos, der har universalhistorisk sigte.

Roots growing out of container drainholes, and weeds growing on the sandbed surface, are the two major problems associated with the use of sandbed subirrigation systems for nursery crop production. Adjusting the water level within the sandbed, application of herbicides to the sandbed surface, placing weed barriers on the sandbed surface, and placing copper hydroxide-treated weed barriers on the sandbed surface were tested to control rooting-out and weed growth. Coppertreated barriers provided the best control of rooting-out and weed growth without reducing the shoot growth of heather, forsythia, or weigela. Several herbicides provided good control of rooting-out and weed growth without reducing the shoot growth of daphne.

Summary Wettability of sanded and non-sanded transverse and tangential sections of 22 southern hardwoods species was judged by measurement of contact angles using phenol formaldehyde resins. As expected, contact angle values on transverse sections were higher than those on tangential sections for both sanded and non-sanded surfaces. On sanded surfaces, hackberry had the highest mean contact angle (64.7°), and black oak had the lowest mean contact angle (50.1°). On non-sanded surfaces, winged elm had the highest mean contact angle (59.1°), and sweetgum had the lowest mean contact angle (45.9°). In addition, 4 of the 22 species (southern red oak, sweetgum, white oak, and post oak) were selected to investigate the effect of oven-drying, air-drying, and free-drying on wettability. The mean transverse contact was 2.1°–29.0° and 5.1°–31.5° higher than radial and tangential values, respectively. The contact angle pattern typically displayed for a given species and plane was generally oven-dry > air-dry > freeze-dry. The species pattern for most methods and planes was: sweetgum > white oak > post oak > southern red oak. White oak and post oak gave similar contact angle values.

Summary In this study, we have investigated the turbulent flow of water over the sandbed deposited in a horizontal eccentric annulus. The primary objective was to determine the effect of the presence of a sandbed on the parameters strongly involved in the bed-erosion process, such as the local fluid-velocity profiles near the interface, the equivalent sandbed roughness, and the average and the interfacial friction factors. The particle-image-velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to measure the velocity distribution at the water/sandbed interface. The bedload transport of particles caused an abrupt increase in the equivalent sandbed roughness. Analyses of the velocity profiles in the wall units confirmed that the sandbed roughness is variable and can be several times greater than the mean particle size. The interfacial ( fi) and the average friction factors ( fa) were evaluated and compared with flow under the stationary-bed and the bedload-transport conditions. The interfacial friction factor increased dramatically at the onset of the bed erosion. We have also found that depending on the bed height (or the surface area of the bed at the interface), the interfacial friction factor can be significantly different from the average friction factor. The results presented here provide much-needed experimental data for the validation of the mechanistic, semimechanistic (empirical), and numerical [computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD)] models of the bed erosion process. The major conclusion of the study is that the difference between the average and interfacial friction factors should be taken into account for more-realistic multilayer modeling of the hole cleaning.

Er den hidtidige sandhed om, at ældre arbejdstagere har det sværere på arbejdsmarkedet da bare en myte? Og hvis ja, hvorfor så udgive et helt temanummer af Tidsskrift for AR-BEJDSliv om emnet? Det er der i hvert fald tre gode grunde til: For det første lader historien om de ældres arbejdsmarkedstilknytning sig ikke bare lige beskrive i et par slagkraftige overskrifter. Nyhedsbrevet Nyt fra Beskæftigelsesministeriet juni 2002 viser for eksempel, at langtidsledigheden stadig er højere for ældre ledige end for andre ledige. For det andet er seniorpolitik, som det fremgår af ovenstående, fortsat et varmt emne i medierne i en debat, som Tidsskrift for Arbejdsliv gerne vil bidrage til. Summary Using four different wood species, the wetting behaviour of sanded wood surfaces was compared with that of microtomed surfaces. Sanding caused lower contact angles and lower total surface free energies. Electron donor components were considered to be responsible for the observed changes according to the applied acid-base approach. The time behaviour of sanded surfaces differed from the microtomed reference, insofar as the volume of a deposited drop of water decreased very rapidly as soon as it was applied, indicating fast penetration into the wood. A qualitative analysis by SEM revealed a heavily torn upper-most cell layer on sanded surfaces, which was assumed to be responsible for the increased surface free energy and enhanced penetration.

Summary This paper presents results of an experimental study on how fluid viscoelastic properties would influence the particle removal from the sandbed deposited in horizontal annuli. Water and two different viscoelastic fluids were used for bed-erosion experiments. The particle-image-velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to measure the local fluid velocity at the fluid/sandbed interface, allowing for accurate estimation of the fluid-drag forces and the turbulence stresses. It was found that polymer fluids needed to exert higher level drag forces (than those of water) on the sandbed to start movement of the particles. Results have also shown that, at the critical flow rate of bed erosion, the polymer fluids yielded higher local fluid velocities and turbulent stresses than those of water. Moreover, the local velocity measurements by means of the PIV technique and the resultant bed-shear-stress calculations indicated that enhancing polymer concentration under the constant flow rate should also enhance the drag forces acting on the sandbed. However, these improved fluid hydrodynamic forces did not result in any improvement in the bed erosion. Therefore, the mechanism causing the delay in the bed erosion by polymer additives could not be explained by any decrease in the local fluid velocity and the turbulence. The primary reason for the delayed bed erosion by the polymer fluids was suggested to be linked to their viscoelastic properties. Two possible mechanisms arising from the elastic properties of the polymer fluids that hinder bed erosion were further discussed in the paper. The stress tensor of the viscoelastic-fluid flow was analyzed to determine the normal stress differences and the resultant normal fluid force acting on the particles at the fluid/sandbed interface. The normal force induced by the normal stress differences of the viscoelastic fluid was identified as one of the possible causes of the delayed bed erosion by these types of fluids.

Derudover åbnede disse tekster hans øjne for nye perspektiver og sammenhænge, præsenterede nye ideer og føjede nye lag til i det symbolfyldte sprog, han livet igennem gjorde brug af i såvel prosa som digtning. Blandt de betydningsfulde tekster, Grundtvig mødte, bor nogle stykker fremhaves. Det galder først og fremmest hele det komplekse felt angående Beowulf, et dansk legendepræget historie-epos, et mytisk epos, en historiefilosofi iklædt en kristen forsynstro og bragt i anvendelse pa Norden, en forestilling om kongens herredomme under ansvar over for Gud, om folket, det folkelige, om menneskeligt fællesskab som skueplads for kampen mellem sandhed og løgn. Det galder desuden de Kadmon-påvirkede digte i Junius-manuskriptet, der ligeledes udtrykker en kristen forsynstro som baggrund for historieforstaelsen og forbinder den skrevne historie med kirkeårets liturgisk-historiske kredslob. Alt imens Grundtvig gennemførte disse studier, stiftede han bekendtskab med, hvad vi kunne kalde den oldengelske kirkes insulære oldkirkelige tekster, kort sagt det oldkirkelige, den sarlige nordisk-kristne arv som vi moder i den tidlige kristne middelalder. De samme perspektiver blev han samtidig præsenteret for gennem det udvalg af tekster, som George Hickes og Humphrey Wanley som udgivere havde forelagt i deres tobindsværk, Thesaurus, hvilket Grundtvig benyttede i Det Kongelige Bibliotek som en væsentlig kildesamling. Der kunne han for eksempel finde religiøse og eksegetiske poetiske tekster, der star i umiddelbar sammenhang med tema, billedsprog og den retoriske udtryksform, som vi moder i De Levendes Land. Methods: The main objective of this study is aimed at Comprehensive Study and Conceptual Study on Kati Trika Prushtavamsha Sandi Shareera as mentioned in the Classics, Study the Structural Abnormalities of the Anatomy of Vertebral Column in Lumbar Ankylosing Spondylitis and to compare the Normal Radio-logical Structure of Lumbo Sacral Region with the Confirmed 30 cases of Lumbar Ankylosing Spondylitis. Results: All the Patients were observed before treatment by Objective and Subjective Criteria. Conclusion: As per the Study, Lumbar Ankylosing Spondylitis is more prone in young men than young women and lack of Spinal mobility with occupation has major role in this disease.

The measured results were supported using microscopic analysis of the surface topography especially for surfaces with very high roughness. The experiment shows a lower surface roughness of beech wood sanded with an eccentric sander. The sander created a surface with smaller grooves, removed more protruding fibers and created a more homogeneous surface suitable for subsequent surface treatment.

Summary An experimental study was conducted to investigate turbulent flow of water over a cuttings bed by use of a large-scale horizontal-flow loop. A nonintrusive laser-based-imaging technique was used to determine instantaneous local velocity near the stationary sandbed/fluid interface in the horizontal annulus. The velocity measured directly at the sandbed/fluid interface was then used for critical evaluation of the accuracy of the assumptions and correlations commonly used for development of mechanistic and semimechanistic sediment-transport models. In particular, effects of turbulent velocity fluctuations on the magnitude of the hydrodynamic drag and lift forces and the interfacial (bed) shear stress are investigated.

North Sea stocks of lesser sandeel have recently become depleted, and improved methods for abundance estimation are sought. This paper focuses on the acoustic target strength (TS) and orientation of sandeel, measured simultaneously in several field experiments. A specially designed cubic cage, fitted with an echosounder and a video camera, was lowered onto the sea bottom, trapping wild sandeel inside. Methods for manually selecting valid echotraces from individual sandeel are described. Scattered mean TS values from several experiments are reported. These are, in spite of the observed variability, summarized in a TS–fish length (cm) relationship as TS = 20logL – 93.1 (dB) at 200 kHz. We believe that the accuracy of the relationship may still be debated; incorporating larger uncertainty in the overall mean TS will increase the total uncertainty of the stock biomass estimate from sandeel acoustic surveys. This uncertainty is now, using standard narrow-beam echosounders, dominated by the fish patchiness relative to the survey coverage. Results from pilot investigations of the sandeel swimming orientation using video cameras are also presented, showing that sandeel usually has an anguilliform swimming pattern with substantial positive (head-up) tilt. The spread of the tilt-angle distribution is also larger than for more neutrally buoyant fishes.

Abstract Xylem anatomy is fundamental in studies of the evolution of terrestrial plants, tree ecophysiology, forestry, and wood science. Traditional xylem anatomical studies by light microscopy utilize wood sections. However, the procedures are laborious, and high-quality histological sections have been particularly challenging to achieve from recalcitrant wood species and dry wood material. Modern microscopy offers opportunities for speeding up the xylem anatomical preparations. In this regard, the merits of using a sanded surface for wood anatomical research have been largely overlooked. Sanding of wood surfaces is practiced in dendrochronology and wood identification studies exclusively for the investigation of macro features, such as tree rings, wood porosity, or parenchyma patterns. We conducted microscopic level investigations of sanded surfaces of difficult-to-section high-density woods such as Dalbergia and Quercus species by reflected white light and epifluorescence microscopy. Reflected white light or combinations of reflected light and fluorescence could clearly show xylem micro-features in sanded wood surfaces. The resolution of cell types after sanding with 1000-grit was similar to the resolution obtained by transmitted light microscopy in histological slides. The advantages of sanded wood surfaces compared to traditional wood sections can be summarized as cost- and time-effective sample preparation, large sample area, intact cell walls and tissue structure, preservation of chemical content and extractives, and even focus of the field of view. A simple procedure of wood sanding instead of microscopic slides can be used for xylem microscopy and automatic image analysis of xylem structure.

The object of this paper is to establish the syntactic function, in the Fuzhou dialect, of the phenomenon of tonal and consonantal sandhis. The existence of sandhis in this dialect was described a long time ago (Maclay, 1870), but no systematic analysis of their syntactic role has been made until now. Former researchers mostly confined themselves to the fact that sandhis existed at the morpheme frontiers in dissyl/abic words. Here, through the homophonic words all represented by the syllable "tuok", whose syntactic functions are marked by whether or not they use sandhis, we are trying to detach the syntactic role of tonal and consonantal sandhis, by exploring the possibilities of their use in relation with the various functions of the words "tuok" .

Sandeels (Ammodytes marinus) are a critical prey of many top predators in the North Sea, and have also been the target of a major industrial fishery. To quantify resource allocation between competing predators, and between natural predators and fishers, and to assess the impact of each source of mortality on sandeel population dynamics, estimates of the absolute abundance of sandeels at the spatial scale at which these interactions take place are required. In this study, hydroacoustic seabed survey and nocturnal grab surveys are combined to examine variation in the abundance of sandeels at a sandbank complex off southeast Scotland. Grab surveys provide point estimates of sandeel density and sediment composition data, which are used to define sandeel sediment preference categories. The total area of each sandeel sediment preference category is determined by hydroacoustic seabed survey. Sandeel population abundance recovered immediately following the closure of the sandeel fishery. However, simply closing the fishery was not sufficient to maintain the size of the local sandeel stock; the population is also highly dependent on good recruitment. We demonstrate how this combination of techniques might be used to examine variation in overwintering mortality rates in sandeels.
