Abstract:
This article discusses the question of the influence and potential of Christianity in contemporary secularized culture. I take as my starting point the twofold thesis that ‘God is dead’ and ‘Christianity survived the death of God’. In section 1 and 2 I demonstrate how Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault have elaborated this thesis in a somewhat similar manner by criticising the ideological workings of what in the words of Nietzsche could be called the Christian ‘will to truth’. In section 3 I argue that Slavoj Žižek’s recent engagement with theology allow for another reading of the Christian truth-seeking, which in contrast brings out a potential for a critique of ideology. The difference between these two readings can be summarized as two interpretations of the famous words in The Gospel of John, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Thus, Christianity does not only entail the suppressive danger of an obligation to tell the truth about oneself at any prize, it also offers the liberating prospective in being true to the manifestation of the death of God on the cross.

The Exhausted Truth and the True Inexhaustibility What are the relations between images and truth? How can truth be represented? In the article “The Exhausted Truth and the True Inexhaustibility”, the German romanticist and philosopher Friedrich Schlegel’s theories concerning the great value and unmeasurable importance of the endless, the unintelligible, and the inexhaustible serves as the opening to a discussion of what is to be understood by the question of truth. Does truth pertain to the forever unsayable domains of the oblique and evasive – that which must remain outside the firm grasp of enlightenment and understanding? Or, on the contrary, is truth that which not only can be enframed, but also reproduced and represented? The discussion of this question brings forth a fundamental divide between Schlegel’s and Romanticism’s idealizations of the creative and vitalistic transgressions of the human limits of understanding and the boundaries set up in the names of enlightenment and knowledge. As argued in the article, this divide would also describe a discrepancy between, on the one hand, a contemplative search into the unknown depths of the world, and, on the other DEN UDTØMTE SANDHED OG DEN SANDE UUDTØMMELIGHED 43 PERISKOP NR. 18 2017 hand, the desire to bring into light, into form, and into image. The Information Age in which we are said to live today would appear to provide us first and foremost with the latter image of truth: The substitution of Romanticism’s inexhaustive image of truth with the true exhaustiveness of our image culture.

Præsten og Loke: Grundtvigs apologetiske dialog i “Om Christendommens Sandhed”[The Pastor vs. Loke: Grundtvig ’s apologetic dialogue in his “On the truth of Christianity ”]By Troels NøragerDue to the fact that Grundtvig propagated a basically pre-modern conception of Christianity, apologetics constitute an integral part of his theological writings. So far, however, Grundtvig’s apologetic discourse (and its strategies) has not received the scholarly attention that it deserves. This article takes as its test case a rather lengthy (ca. 40 pages) dialogue, which Grundtvig inserted into his major apologetic work, “On the truth of Christianity”. The dialogue features a true Christian minister (Grundtvig himself) and his adversary, “Loke”, a representative of contemporary rationalist-deist Christianity. It is demonstrated how the themes of the dialogue cluster around the Apostolic Creed, thus reflecting Grundtvig’s theological turn dating from 1825. In particular, the focus is on Grundtvig’s pervasive (but, alas, less than persuasive) use of principium contradictionis as his major apologetic tool. It is demonstrated that there remains in Grundtvig an unresolved tension between the inherent epistemological nature of this principle and Grundtvig’s desire to employ it to bolster his own exclusively theological (and ontological) concept of truth.

Le sandre est un percidé largement répandu en Europe. Le fonctionnement de ses populations méridionales est cependant mal connu. L'objectif de ce travail est d'apporter des connaissances nouvelles sur l'écologie du sandre par l'étude de la population d'un réseau de canaux en Camargue (sud de la France). Différentes techniques ont été mises en œuvre pour étudier l'isolement de la population (génétique, morphométrie), l'utilisation de l'habitat (télémétrie), la biologie (traits de vie) et la dynamique dans le système. Le fonctionnement de cette population dépend plus de facteurs biotiques qu'abiotiques (contrairement à ce qui est observé sur les populations septentrionales), ainsi que de facteurs anthropiques (agriculture...)

Le cannibalisme intra-cohorte est l’acte de tuer et consommer tout ou partie d’un individu conspécifique du même âge. Longtemps considéré comme un artefact d’élevage, le cannibalisme est maintenant admis comme un phénomène naturel pouvant être soumis à des mécanismes de sélection. Chez les Téléostéens, il est majoritairement référencé au niveau des premiers stades de vie. En condition d’élevage, plusieurs facteurs biotiques et abiotiques ont été testés sans réussir à totalement l’éliminer chez de nombreuses espèces. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse a pour objectifs de mieux comprendre la mise en place et le maintien du cannibalisme, chez le sandre, en se focalisant sur le lien entre cannibalisme, personnalité et mise en place de l’ichtyophagie. Cette thèse a été divisée en trois parties : (i) description du cannibalisme chez les premiers stades de vie du sandre et étude de l’influence de certains facteurs d’élevage, (ii) détermination des traits de personnalité chez les juvéniles, et mise en évidence de l’apparition du comportement piscivore chez les larves, (iii) recherche des liens entre cannibalisme, personnalité et mise en place de l’ichtyophagie. Cette thèse a montré que les facteurs d’élevage testés n’ont pas d’influence sur le cannibalisme. Elle a permis de démontrer l’existence de syndromes comportementaux dès les premiers stades de vie, que l’ichtyophagie ne se mettait pas en place au même âge chez tous les individus et que celle-ci était liée à la personnalité. Nos résultats montrent, également, que le cannibalisme chez les premiers stades de vie du sandre serait lié à la mise en place d’une ichtyophagie précoce et non à une personnalité particulière. On peut en déduire que le cannibalisme ne repose pas, au cours du développement, sur les mêmes caractéristiques individuelles que l’ichtyophagie
Intra-cohort cannibalism is the act of killing and consuming the whole, or major part, of a conspecific individual of the same age. Most often considered as an artefact of captive conditions, it is now assumed that cannibalism is a natural phenomenon, which could be submitted to selection. In Teleosts, it is mostly found in early life stages. In rearing conditions, several biotic and abiotic factors have been already tested, yet without successfully stop it in several species. In this context, the aim of this thesis is to better understand the onset and the stability of cannibalism, in pikeperch, by focusing on the link between cannibalism, personality and the onset of ichtyophagy. This study comprised three main parts aiming at: (i) describing the cannibalism in early life stages and studying the impact of rearing factors, (ii) determining personality traits in juveniles and describing the onset of ichtyophagy in larvae, (iii) searching the link between cannibalism, personality and onset of ichtyophagy. This thesis showed that rearing factors have no impact on cannibalism. Furthermore, we found behavioural syndromes in early life stages and that the onset of ichtyophagy did not occur at the same time for all individuals. Our results highlight that cannibalism seems to be linked to the onset of ichtyophagy rather than individual personality. In conclusion, cannibalism is not due, throughout the development, to the same individual characteristics than ichtyophagy

Dans le cadre de la production de nouvelles espèces aquacoles, le sandre, Sander lucioperca, est devenu, depuis plusieurs années, une espèce d’intérêt piscicole en raison de sa valeur économique potentielle. Pour développer et pérenniser sa production aquacole, il est nécessaire de comprendre et maîtriser son cycle de reproduction ainsi que les mécanismes physiologiques mis en jeu afin d’obtenir des œufs et des juvéniles viables tout au long de l’année. Dans cet optique d’optimisation du contrôle du cycle, la dopamine apparaît, chez de nombreux téléostéens dont certains perciformes, comme un inhibiteur de l’axe gonadotrope, via les récepteurs de la famille D2, en bloquant le pulse ovulatoire de LH et l’ovulation. Chez le sandre, le rôle de la dopamine et de ses récepteurs, notamment les récepteurs de la famille D1, est inconnu. L’objet de cette thèse est de déterminer le rôle du système dopaminergique lors des phases finales de l’ovogénèse chez le sandre à travers trois axes principaux : (1) déterminer l’effet du blocage des récepteurs de la dopamine, D1 ou D2, sur la régulation de l’axe gonadotrope et l’induction de l’ovulation en absence et en présence d’une molécule de sGnRHa, (2) définir le répertoire et le profil d’expression des récepteurs dopaminergiques par l’étude du transcriptome cérébral du sandre en période pré-ovulatoire et (3) établir le rôle de la dopamine et de ses différents récepteurs (familles D1 et D2) dans la régulation directe et locale de l’axe gonadotrope aux niveaux cérébral et ovarien. La première partie de ce travail a permis pour la première fois, par l’utilisation d’antagonistes spécifiques des familles de récepteurs D1 et D2, de mettre en évidence un rôle potentiel de la dopamine sur la sécrétion de certains stéroïdes sexuels en période pré-ovulatoire chez le sandre par l’intermédiaire des récepteurs de la famille D1. L’identification de l’ensemble des récepteurs de la dopamine existant chez le sandre nous a permis de confirmer leur expression à tous les niveaux de l’axe gonadotrope (cerveau, hypophyse et ovaires) étayant l’hypothèse d’un rôle de la dopamine dans la reproduction du sandre. Enfin, la dernière partie de ce projet a permis de montrer un rôle régulateur du système dopaminergique, directement au niveau ovarien, sur la production de testostérone par l’intermédiaire des deux familles de récepteurs de la dopamine. L’implication des deux familles de récepteurs a également été mise en évidence dans la production ovarienne de la 17β-estradiol. Au niveau cérébral, seule la famille des récepteurs D2 a été montrée impliquée dans la régulation de l’expression du gène de la GnRH-3. De façon générale, cette étude a permis de mettre en évidence l’implication des récepteurs de la dopamine dans la régulation de l’axe gonadotrope lors des phases finales de l’ovogenèse. Toutefois, des travaux ultérieurs devront être menés pour approfondir les mécanismes physiologiques mis en jeu. D’un point de vue aquacole, les traitements hormonaux à base d’antagonistes des récepteurs de la dopamine ont été inefficaces pour améliorer les performances de reproduction du sandre ce qui n’est pas en faveur de leur utilisation future pour induire l’ovulation chez cette espèce. Ainsi, la mise au point d’autres méthodes d’optimisation sera nécessaire pour continuer à développer la production aquacole du sandre
Pikeperch, Sander lucioperca, is a potential valuable economic fish, making it a species of interest for aquaculture diversification. In the domestication process, controlling and understanding the reproductive cycle is a crucial step in order to produce viable offspring in a synchronous and predictable way. In many teleosts including some perciforms, dopamine inhibits the ovulatory pulse of LH and the ovulation step through D2 dopamine receptors family. In pikeperch, the roles of dopamine and its receptors, especially those belonging to the D1 receptors family, are unknown. For the purpose of the optimization of pikeperch reproduction, we investigated the role of the dopaminergic system during the final stages of oogenesis in this species: (1) by determining the effects of D1 or D2 receptor antagonists alone or in association with sGnRHa on the regulation of the reproductive axis and on the induction of ovulation, (2) by determining the repertoire and the expression profile of the dopamine receptors using a brain transcriptome analysis during the pre-ovulatory period and (3) by evaluating the role of dopamine and its receptors (D1 and D2 families) in the direct and local regulation of the gonadotropic axis at the brain and ovarian levels. For the first time, we showed that the dopamine/D1 receptors complex regulates the sex-steroids release during the pre-ovulatory period, suggesting that dopamine is involved in pikeperch reproduction. Also, we support its involvement thanks to the identification of the dopamine receptors gene expression at the brain, pituitary and ovarian levels. Finally, we showed that the dopaminergic system directly regulates the ovarian testosterone production, through both D1 and D2 receptor families. The involvement of both dopamine receptor families was also highlighted on ovarian 17β-estradiol production. Only the D2 receptor family was shown to be involved on the brain GnRH-3 gene expression. In conclusion, we point out a dopamine receptors implication on the gonadotropic axis regulation during the final stages of oogenesis in pikeperch. However, further studies should be performed to pinpoint the physiological mechanisms behind this phenomenon. From an aquaculture point of view, hormonal treatments with dopamine receptor antagonists appear to be ineffective to improve pikeperch reproductive performances. Therefore, their use to induce pikeperch ovulation should be put into question and the development of alternative methods is necessary to further promote pikeperch production

Abstract:
Young sandeels (0- and 1-group fish) form a substantial part of the total stock biomass at Shetland. As well as forming the basis for a local fishery at Shetland, they are also an extremely important prey item for many seabird species which breed around Shetland coasts. Improving our understanding of recruitment dynamics is vital for managing the Shetland fishery whilst minimizing adverse affects on breeding seabirds. Therefore, this thesis has concentrated on analyzing recruitment patterns and developing models to simulate hypothetical recruitment scenarios. Various models were developed and/or parameterised to simulate recruitment. Firstly, as there appeared to be no clearly defined stock-recruit relationship, time series models were applied to expose and improve understanding of patterns in the data. However, the relationship between stock and recruitment cannot be ignored if spawning stock biomass changes through exploitation. Therefore, Shepherd (1982) and Ricker (1954, 1975) stock-recruit models are parameterised using bootstrap analysis. For the Shepherd model, which is the more complex of the two, bootstrap analysis identified models which could be considered as "constant recruitment" models - that is no influence of spawning stock biomass on recruitment. It was found that four very low recruit years, which occurred in the late 1980s when spawning stock biomass was generally high or moderate, were strongly influencing model fit. This prompted the question: are these low recruit years typical of the range of recruitment for the given spawning stock biomasses or can they be considered outliers? In the face of uncertainty (although there is no biological reasoning) these data points were removed and the stock-recruit models re-parameterised. This enabled curves with 95% confidence intervals to be parameterised for both stock-recruit models (Shepherd & Ricker). The autoregressive model parameterised earlier was combined with the stock-recruit models so recruitment in any year was expressed as a function of SSB and of recruitment in the previous year.

Abstract:
Abstract Achieving strong joining of aluminum alloy to carbon fiber thermoplastic composites (CFRTP) using laser heating was an essential method to reduce the weight of structure and save energy. In current study, a silane coupling agent was adopted on the aluminum alloy surface to improve the bonding strength of the laser joining of aluminum alloy to CFRTP. Substrate characteristics of the aluminum alloy after treatment including surface morphology, surface roughness and wettability as well as chemical composition were then studied. For comparison, identical experiments were also performed for the polished and sanded aluminum alloy. Compared to the aluminum alloy polished, the surface roughness of aluminum alloy sanded and silane treated was increased, whereas the wettability was both decreased. The rougher surface led to a worse wettability of aluminum alloy surface for these two specimens. In addition, the detected organo-functional group for the latter was also responsible for the increase of water contact angle on the aluminum alloy surface. Compared to the polished specimens, the tensile shear force of joints for sanded and silane-treated substrates averaged 1106.9N and 2959.4N respectively, which represents a respective increase of 1.2 times and 3.3 times than the polished state. Correspondingly, the tensile shear strength of joints was 6.3MPa and 16.8MPa, which was increased by 1.1 times and 2.9 times, respectively. The improved mechanical interlocking induced by increasing the surface roughness in both sanded and silane treated cases was considered to strengthen the bonding strength at the interface. Moreover, for the joints fabricated by aluminum alloy silane treated and CFRTP, the remarkable enhancement of joint strength was also related to the formation of silane coupling film on the aluminum alloy surface. The tensile shear properties of joints were also found to have a positive influence in increasing the adhesion amount of CFRTP on the fractured surface of aluminum alloy. Finally, the silane treatment was expected to play a significant role in joining aluminum alloy to CFRTP.

Abstract:
Sandeq is a type of outrigger sailing boat used by Mandar fishermen to catch fish as well as a mode of transportation between islands. Sandeq boat has a mast made of bamboo that is called pattung. Recently, the raw material for the mast is very rare, so it is necessary to find alternative materials with equal quality and strength. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out by modeling masts made of aluminum, fiberglass and bamboo using Finite Element Method (FEM). The workload used is the maximum load of the main sail. The results showed that alternative materials that can replace bamboo are aluminum 6061 (AL 6061) and fiberglass (FRP). By applying the caseload on the Sandeq mast, it is found that the AL 6061 experiences stress with 78 MPa, and FRP experiences stress with 150 MPa. Both of these materials are suitable for use as an alternative material for the Sandeq mast with a safety factor SF ≥ 5.

Linear city bus services are facing increased challenges from city growth. Increased number of inhabitants on increasing acres of built-up areas, makes it demanding to maintain adequate bus services within reasonable catchment areas. Number of departures per hour give a partial description of the bus service quality. Number of departures give reference to the time aspect of bus service quality, but say nothing about the geographical aspect. What part of the entire line network is within reach of direct bus service when frequencies are limited? To address the geographical aspect of bus service quality, the term network ratio is introduced. The term Network Ratio (NR) signifies what part of the entire line network is within reach of direct bus service to or from a certain place in the network. Network Ratio is given as a mathematical term whereby direct bus lines are calculated as a percentage of the entire network. The character and development of Network Ratio in a specific city is illustrated through an analysis of the urban growth of line network and built-up areas in the twin cities of Stavanger and Sandnes. The analysis is covering the period 1920 – 2000 in intervals of 20 years from the first bus lines were established in the urban area. Year 2010 is also included due to major changes implemented right after the turn of the millennium. Development show there is a close relation between bus network and built-up areas. When areas are being built, bus lines follow. The initial fase 1920 – 40 with extensive development of bus lines combined with some areal growth, is followed by a fase of consolidation 1940 – 60. The latter period is characterized by moderate areal growth, extended lines reducing network ratios, and increasing frequencies on the best bus lines. Extensive areal growth in the following period 1960 – 80, implies increased number of bus lines. As a consequence network ratios as well as frequencies are falling in the entire network. In 1960 certain lines had developed as much as 6 departures per hour, while maximum bus line frequency in 1980 has diminished to 2. New bus service development is introduced in the following period between 1980 and 2000. Numerous bus companies are united, and a more comprehensive planning of bus services are applied. The number of bus lines is stabilized at about 40, the fall in network ratio is reduced, and certain lines develop 4 departures per hour. Parallell to the bus development, growth of built-up areas is slowing down due to increased urban renewal with higher densities within built-up areas. In the period 2000 – 2010 new efforts are given to the development of bus services. Development of Network Ratio takes a new direction: The length of network links with high NR is increasing, while links with very low NR are diminishing. Number of bus lines is decreasing, and by 2010 almost 50% of the bus lines are served with 4 departures or more. Passenger comfort is improved in buses as well as on bus stops, and low floor buses are introduced to ease accessibility. Bus service quality is further developed after 2010. Digital services are introduced including digital ticketing, bus service information and real-time information on internet. In addition real-time information is presented at high frequency bus stops through visual screen and auditory speaker. Inside the buses name of next stop is given on screen and through loudspeaker. Further development of the bus services, should include improved Network Ratios in the entire network, as well as increased frequencies on major bus corridors. The latter is a task not only for the bus service planners, but just as well for the city planners and politicians in collaboration with the developers implementing urban density and allocation of important destinations. A last, but not least, objective for bus service development will be to improve punctuality and total travel time. Today a considerable proportion of city bus services are delayed in car traffic congestions. This is occurring especially on main streets and during rush hours. A set of different solutions are needed to address this question: 1. Dedicated bus streets (including car access to limited addresses) 2. Bus lines through local streets in concentrated housing, office and shopping areas. 3. Dedicated bus lane on main streets where possible. 4. Car traffic regulations on main streets without space for extra bus lane. As an overall vision, we need to cultivate the word of Flemming Larsen: urban growth as pearls on a string, as shown in fig. 13 and fig. 14.

Soil-side corrosion control is a major challenge for Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) operators. Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (VCIs) are increasingly being used as an additional corrosion control mitigation tool. A PRCI-sponsored Phase 1 study established baseline performance and evaluated monitoring methods for the VCIs. One focus of this study included VCIs' performance comparison with effective cathodic protection (CP) systems. The investigation concluded that VCIs' corrosion mitigation performance is equivalent to that of an effective CP system. This study also evaluated tank bottom corrosion monitoring tools, investigated VCIs' migration behavior, determined VCIs performance in the presence of high levels of chlorides and bacterial activity, and evaluated VCI delivery methods considering tank pad conditions. This study concluded that mass-loss coupons installed a few inches below the tank bottom generally agree with tank floor inspection data, thus either bonded or unbonded mass-loss coupons could be used as one of the corrosion monitoring tools to assess tank pad corrosivity. The experimental work on VCI migration showed that VCIs migrate quickly through a sand environment. Thus, VCIs should provide corrosion mitigation coverage to an AST tank bottom soon after their delivery. The experimental work also showed that VCI performance is robust and not compromised in the presence of either high chloride levels or bacterial activity. Finally, the through-the-floor VCI delivery method is more efficient compared to the through-the-sandpad when tank pad corrosivity is elevated. Related webinar

Jubata grass--one of Point Reyes National Seashore?s highest-priority invasive species--threatens important habitat in designated wilderness. Natural Resource funding ($210,000) was obtained to eradicate small infestations and bring 3,025 acres to maintenance level. Work was conducted 2016-2019 in the central wilderness, source of the highest jubata grass concentration. We treated 278 patches (7.8 gross and 3.0 net infested acres), 13% (37 patches) twice, across 3,300 landscape acres. About 17% were initially treated chemically; 83% were manually removed. Due to increased costs, jubata grass spread, and unexpected challenges, treatments were not implemented over the full project area. Patches treated manually and chemically with and without retreatment were monitored in summer 2019. We assessed effects on jubata grass cover and presence of regrowth; variation among treatments; and factors that might explain variability. Treatment resulted in highly significant reductions in patch-level jubata grass cover. Over half the monitored patches had over 50% jubata grass cover pre-treatment; by summer 2019, about half had no jubata grass, and none had 50% or higher jubata grass cover. Results did not differ significantly among treatments. With marginal significance, results indicated post-treatment cover and regrowth could be related to patch size, plant distribution, or soil type. Smaller, more isolated, or patches on sandier soils were more likely to be eradicated. Though the largest patches were not eradicated, cover was substantially reduced if retreatment was applied. Lessons learned may help guide future management, ideally with new approaches as they develop, given significant constraints on herbicide use.

Abstract:
This report describes analysis of ground failure and lack thereof observed in the Mihama Ward portion of Chiba, Japan following the 2011 M9.0 Tohoku Earthquake. In conjunction with this work, we have also significantly expanded the laboratory component of the Next Generation Liquefaction (NGL) relational database. The district referred to as Mihama Ward is on ground composed of hydraulic fill sluiced in by pipes, thereby resulting in a gradient of soil coarseness, with coarser soils deposited near the pipes and fine-grained soils carried further away. Observations from local researchers at Chiba University following the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake indicate that ground failure was observed closer to the locations where the pipes deposited the soil, and not further away. This ground failure consisted of extensive sand boiling and ground cracking, which led to building settlement and pipe breaks. Our hypothesis at the outset of the project was that liquefaction susceptibility might explain the pattern of ground failure. Specifically, soils deposited near the pipes are susceptible due to their coarser texture, while soils further from the pipes may be non-susceptible due to the presence of clay minerals and higher plasticity. Were this hypothesis borne out by evidence, soil in the transition zone would have provided important insights about liquefaction susceptibility. Based on testing of soils in our laboratory, we find this hypothesis to be only partially correct. We have confirmed that there are regions with high clay contents and no ground failure and other regions with predominantly granular soils and extensive surface manifestation of liquefaction. Where the hypothesis breaks down is in the transition zone, where we found that the fine-grained soils are non-plastic, and therefore they are susceptible to liquefaction. Our interpretation is that these silt materials likely liquefied during the earthquake, but did not manifest liquefaction. Two factors may have contributed to this lack of manifestation: (1) level ground conditions and lack of large driving static shear stresses (structures in the region are light residential construction) and (2) the silt is less likely to erode to the surface and form silt boils than the sandier soils that produced surface manifestations. This case history points to the importance of separating triggering (defined as the development of significant excess pore pressure and loss of strength) from manifestation (defined as observations of ground failure, including cracking, sand boils, and lateral spreading). The Mihama Ward case history involved laboratory tests performed by Tokyo Soil Research Co. Ltd. and the UCLA geotechnical laboratory. Given the importance of this data to the understanding of this case history, we recognized a need to incorporate laboratory tests in the NGL database alongside field tests and liquefaction observations. We therefore developed an organizational structure for laboratory tests, including direct simple shear, triaxial compression, and consolidation, and implemented the schema in the NGL database. We then uploaded data from tests performed by Tokyo Soil and UCLA. Furthermore, numerous other researchers have also uploaded laboratory test data for other sites. This report describes the organizational structure of the laboratory component of the database, and a tool for interacting with laboratory data.
